NWHC mission.

We are delighted to have Ms.

Soleil’s passion for our mission and her leadership
strengths will bring much to
Habitat NWHC. She has excelled at managing staff and
volunteers, developing annual

scale events and designing
marketing strategies.
Through her successes, she

Volunteer of the Year Award:
Bob Young
Mr. Bob Young received Habitat
NWHC’s Volunteer of the Year award
for going above and beyond, helping
the affiliate’s partner families, staff
and other volunteers. Bob helps the
affiliate in many different areas. He is
a construction crew leader, giving of
his time every Wednesday, Thursday
and Saturday to lead construction.
Every Saturday morning Bob gives
the affiliate’s ‘Welcome and Orientation’ to 40-120 volunteers. Bob continues to enhance the affiliate’s partnership with his church, The MET. He is
the co-chair of the construction committee and is a member of our Board
of Directors. In addition to all of this,
when asked, Bob is always willing to
take on a task. Even the tasks that no
one has a desire to tackle.
Habitat NWHC is grateful and honored to have Bob Young volunteering
to help us serve families in need by
building affordable, decent housing.

Family Advisors
FE B R U A R Y 2 0 1 0
Construction Crew Leaders
Family Advisors are members of the affiliate’s
Family Support Committee and are the liaisons
between the office and our Habitat partner families, communicating with the partner families
on a bi-weekly or sometimes only monthly basis
(by e-mail, phone, or in person). Family Advisors also help us empower, encourage and educate our partner families as all are first-time
home buyers. We don’t want to just build new
houses; we also want to help our partner families be successful homeowners. This volunteer
opportunity can be very meaningful and rewarding as you get to interact one-on-one with
the families we are building for.
We also need individuals to help the Family
Support Committee teach education courses
covering financial planning, mortgages, homeowner’s insurance, HOA’s and home maintenance.
This is a unique volunteer opportunity and one with leadership
responsibilities. We work on our construction site every
Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 8am-3pm. We schedule
most groups for Saturdays and will have 30 to 120 volunteers
onsite. Our construction crew leaders (or Red Hats) supervise
groups of 5 to 15 volunteers working on one specific project:
painting, landscaping, building a fence, roofing, framing, cabinet installation, tiling, to name a few. We do everything except
plumbing, HV/AC, electrical and drywall.
To become a Red Hat we have individuals come out to the build
site to work a few times with our construction manager and
other Red Hats to determine what you are interested in leading
(even if you don’t know specifically how to do it, we will train
you), the number of volunteers you feel comfortable working
with, etc. We will start out by pairing you with a Red Hat Mentor (a crew leader who will be onsite each time you are out) who
you will work with to lead a group of volunteers. As you feel
comfortable leading groups by yourself we will stop pairing you
with your Red Hat Mentor and will start giving you tasks of
your own to lead.
To help with any of these projects or for more information about volunteering with Habitat for Humanity NWHC, please contact our volunteer coordinator MaryGrace Borisow at the affiliate office: (281) 820-2307 or [email protected]

Volunteers Going Above & Beyond
Habitat NWHC volunteers are being recognized for their volunteer efforts within the community:
Mr. Bob Young
Bob Young received the Village of
Gleannloch Farms' ―Expect the Unexpected‖ award for his volunteer
contributions to Habitat NWHC. The
Village of Gleannloch Farms chooses
one resident each quarter to honor
with this award. The community
newsletter stated, ―qualified nominees are active adults who volunteer
their time and talents to their community and who exemplify leadership,
spirit and citizenship.‖
the look of restored hope in the parent
and child’s eyes,‖ stated Bob when he
received his ―Expect the Unexpected
award.

Bob Young first started volunteering
with Habitat in 1998. Today he is a
member of our Board of Directors, a
Co-Chair for our Construction Committee and is a Construction Crew
Leader teaching others how to build
houses for families in need.
―The most rewarding part about volunteering for Habitat is seeing the
children who now have a home to
grow up in. They are the future and
my inspiration to keep on building.
Words cannot explain the feeling I get
when a house is completed and I see

Carla Ehlers started volunteering
with Habitat NWHC over seven years
ago. Carla has held many roles with
the affiliate helping with our ReStore
