2012 Annual Report - Project Turnabout
Providing the Hope of Recovery through our mission 2012 Annual Report Project Turnabout will remain a sanctuary of hope, where those who suffer from alcohol, drug and gambling addictions will always find an open door and open hearts, ready and able to help. 2 WELCOME from the Executive Director/CEO Dear Friends, First and foremost, I would like to thank all who have supported us over the years with your donations, words of encouragement, your thoughts and prayers. Your support has been appreciated and has enabled Project Turnabout to endure for more than 40 years. In 2012, more individuals and families reached out to us for help than ever before; most from rural communities across the state. They come from all walks of life in search of hope for recovery from alcohol, drug and gambling problems. Their alcohol, drug and/or gambling addictions give them a common experience in which they can relate to each other. • Expanded our clinical staff to include additional full time mental health professionals, nursing and licensed intake counselors to work as part of the team that meets the diverse requirements of those in need of our services. • Overhauled quality improvement systems to provide information from which to base ongoing improvement in all of our services. • Established internship programs to continue to recruit and retain a staff that, I believe, are second to none in their compassion, commitment and competence in treating addictive illness. • Continue to leverage donated funds to assist people to get access to treatment. (Note that 100% of all donations go directly to patient support with no administrative costs charged.) In 2009, Project Turnabout implemented a revised strategic plan that included a number of two to three year initiatives, all of which focus on our ongoing commitment to continuously improve our treatment services. We believed then, as we believe now, that quality care and affordable care are not mutually exclusive. Steady progress has been made on our goals. • In 2012, launched three internet based help Some highlights over the last couple years are as follows: • Received National Accreditation. Project Turnabout received full three year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitative Facilities (CARF). This makes Project Turnabout’s Vanguard Center for Compulsive Gambling one of very few nationally accredited programs that specialize in inpatient/ residential treatment for problem gambling. All of this has been accomplished with the help of Project Turnabout’s friends, alumni and supporters. We could not treat the number of people we treat were it not from the donations, large and small, that we receive. We could not spread the word about Project Turnabout without our alumni and/or base of referents that carry the message. • Expanded our Marshall Transitional Living/ Residential Program in 2010 to meet the growing need of individuals requiring continued guidance as they make the transition into the community. • Completed the implementation of an electronic medical record in 2010. Mike Schiks, Executive Director/CEO links for women, men and problem gamblers that allow patients and staff to stay in touch through chats, blogs and forums. We hope that we can continue to count on you for support as we set the course over the next years. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude, Mike Schiks, Executive Director/CEO 3 Board of Directors • Duaine Amundson, President • David Smiglewski, Vice President • John Haines, Secretary • Ron Laycock, Treasurer • Paul Moe • Jan Nelson • Sandra Redding • Cheri Weismantel Project Turnabout is, and always will be, committed to serving the addiction treatment, education and recovery support needs of the residents of Southwestern Minnesota and beyond. As we grow and our reputation continues to spread, we pray never to lose sight of our roots. The outpouring of support, both emotional and financial, you’ve so generously offered Project Turnabout through the years, serves as a constant reminder of why we are here. We are honored to be able to serve you. About Us Programs and Services Every day, we at Project Turnabout witness first-hand the miracle of lives being restored from the devastation of drug and alcohol addiction, compulsive gambling addiction and family violence through our high quality affordable treatment services. Since 1970, thousands of individuals and families have had hope restored in their lives through our responsive treatment, intervention, mental health services, and prevention and education programs. The economic savings to the community are in the millions, but far more important are the “human savings” realized - self worth regained, families reunited, education continued, jobs rejoined and lives restored. Project Turnabout provides a full range of inpatient/residential and outpatient treatment programs, transitional living/ halfway house services and continuing care for men and women suffering from addictions to alcohol, drugs and/or compulsive gambling. Programs are based on the philosophy that individuals suffering from addiction must completely abstain from mood-altering substances or gambling and become actively involved in ongoing self-help programs. All of our programs and services provide high quality and affordable care for all of Minnesota and are expanding nationally. While recognized as Project Turnabout, unknown to most, its corporate name epitomizes its commitment to those in need: Reverence for Life and Concern for People, Inc. Officially recognized as a nonprofit charitable foundation in 1971, Project Turnabout has established itself through the years as a premier provider of alcohol and drug addiction treatment services and as one of only a handful of proven inpatient/residential treatment programs for compulsive gambling nationwide. The future of Project Turnabout is bright. Throughout the years, Project Turnabout has demonstrated that recovery is possible. Its resolve to carry this message to the community, coupled with the commitment to make the gift of recovery possible to all who need it, have only grown stronger and shine more clearly than ever before. 4 The disease of addiction manifests itself in many areas of people’s lives. Research has found that whether the substance of addiction is alcohol, drugs or money, the effects of the disease and its ravages are the same: physical and emotional health, families, work, relationships and finances are left shattered in its wake. While in treatment at Project Turnabout, patients are guided by a multi-disciplinary team of professionals, including licensed counselors, nurses and mental health professionals, a chaplain, registered dietician and a physical fitness trainer. Detoxification and Central Medical Services Project Turnabout offers round-the-clock nursing staff (RN’s & LPN’s) to support people requiring medical intervention to ensure safe withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs in our Central Medical/Detox Unit. This nine bed unit provides initial care for every patient that is admitted into our inpatient/residential treatment programs. It is here that agency staff conducts medical, social and psychological evaluations and interviews. Referrals are then made to inpatient/residential treatment, outpatient treatment and/or self help groups or to appropriate community based professionals. Inpatient/Residential Chemical Dependency Treatment Programs The Center for Women’s Recovery: Living with the disease of chemical dependency is a different experience for women than it is for men. The Center for Women’s Recovery utilizes a model for women that not only recognizes this but helps them understand the effects of their addiction and prepares them for the special challenges they may face in recovery. This 20-bed unit offers primary and extended care (approximately 30 to 120+ days) options for women, 18 years of age and older, in a safe and nurturing environment. In addition, women’s recovery luncheons are held at our Granite Falls campus to support women in recovery. The Center for Men’s Recovery: Project Turnabout has a 20-bed unit for the primary care program (approximately 30 days) and another 20-bed unit for the extended care program (approximately 60-120 days). Both programs provide the necessary tools to begin the road to recovery from alcohol and/or drug problems. The Men’s Recovery Center serves patients 16 years of age and older. *Patients in both the Men’s and Women’s Programs utilize the 12-Step treatment model and are provided individualized treatment plans specific to their needs. In addition, 24-hour nursing care, mental health services, chaplaincy, fitness training, healthy meal planning, creative arts, and individual/group/family counseling are important aspects of the treatment provided at Project Turnabout. Also included are: educational lecture and video on demand series presentations and other recreational activities. Both centers are housed at our main campus in Granite Falls, MN. The Vanguard Center for Compulsive Gambling Men’s Transitional Living/Halfway House In 1992, Project Turnabout started the Vanguard Compulsive Gambling Treatment Program. This program has emerged as a nationally recognized program for men and women. It is one of only a few inpatient/ residential treatment programs nationally and the only one of its kind in Minnesota. Vanguard is a 20-bed abstinence based unit, based on the 12-step philosophy of gamblers anonymous. Patients are treated seperately from those in our chemical dependency programs. The program is for individuals age 18 and older, with the average stay being 28 days. After a successful treatment, individuals continue with aftercare programming. Outpatient and Continuing Care Programs Outpatient and Continuing Care services are provided through our campuses in Granite Falls, Marshall, Redwood Falls, and Willmar, MN. Individuals (following assessment) have an individual plan that is a less intensive treatment option, still using the same 12-step model of care as our inpatient services. Our Outpatient Program is a 6-week program and the Continuing Care Program runs for a period of 12-weeks. All sessions are facilitated by licensed counselors and programming includes drug screenings. Family members are encouraged to participate in both programs as often as possible. The Family Program Our family education days provide valuable education on alcohol, drug and compulsive gambling addictions, emotional support, as well as interactions with other families who are experiencing the same or similar issues. Family and significant others have the opportunity to participate in family group on a bi-weekly basis. Often times when family members spend time with their loved one, who is abstinent, it is the first time in months or years that this has been possible. Project Turnabout’s Halfway House for Men, ages 16 and older, is located in Marshall, MN. This program can house up to 24 residents who are working toward an independent lifestyle. It places a strong emphasis on the need for patients to make responsible, healthy, daily living choices. The apartment-style living arrangement fosters self-sufficiency and daily therapeutic programming enhances the ability of each resident to learn from others. The duration of this program ranges from 60-180 days. Residents of the program are required to work or attend school and participate in programming based on their individual treatment plan. Becker House is a transitional living home located in Willmar, MN that provides a supportive environment for recovering chemically dependent and compulsive gambling men. The Becker House offers an inexpensive, temporary (one year) place for men to live while they gain employment and continue their recovery. Other Programs and Services Project Turnabout is home to the Regional Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD) Prevention Center for Region 5, which is a 27-county service area in the southwest/ south central part of the state. There are seven Regional Prevention Centers throughout the state made possible through a federal block grant awarded by the Minnesota Alcohol and Drug Abuse Division. Project Turnabout offers a Domestic Abuse Program (DAP) for male perpetrators (Marshall and Willmar campuses). This program promotes healthy alternatives to violence. Intervention services, diversion programs for youth (Granite Falls campus) and DWI clinics (Granite Falls and Marshall campuses) are also offered. 5 Project Turnabout strives to continuously improve our quality through teamwork and dedication by meeting or exceeding patient, family and other stakeholder’s needs Fiscal Year 2012 Program Admissions Educational Programming 175 Patients Transitional/Sober Living 130 Patients Vanguard 142 Patients 11% 8% Trends in Program Admissions Fiscal Years 2009 to 2012 Inpatient Primary 393 Patients 25% FY Ending In... 2012 2011 2010 2009 Chemical Dependency: 1,244 1,263 1,267 1,201 *Inpatient/Residential 722 737 677 681 *Outpatient 522 526 590 520 142 176 193 174 Vanguard Gambling 9% Educational Programming 13% 16% 18% Inpatient Extended 199 Patients Total Admissions 208 49 1,668 1,424 of inpatient/residential patients receive psychological assessments and medical physicals while in treatment Outpatient 279 Patients Fiscal Year 2012 Lives Impacted Chemical Dependency Addiction Treatment Programs 86% 1,244 Vanguard Gambling Addiction Treatment 142 Family Program 1,032 Alumni Activities Standardized Pre/Post Treatment Quality of Life Tests showed that 86% of patients indicated an increase in their quality of life after attending treatment 683 Prevention Program Participation Opportunities 1,500 Recovery Meetings 8,220 Quarterly Speaker Meetings 408 Trainings/Educational Programming 627 Women’s Recovery Luncheons 90% 672 14,528 of inpatient/residential patients stated they felt their needs were met while in treatment Project Turnabout received referrals from 88% of Minnesota counties during Fiscal Year 2012 6 183 1,622 100% Continuing Care 243 Patients Total Lives Impacted 175 1,561 { “Before I came to Project Turnabout I was homeless, bro and other staff, I found that there was hope for a n Guiding Principles: Keeping our costs down, our doors open and respecting the differences of our individuality and spirituality Fiscal Year 2012 (July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012) Fiscal Year 2012 Expenses by Department Fiscal Year 2012 Net Program Revenue Net Program Revenue $7,757,349 Expenses $7,170,719 Net Revenue Travel and Other Expenses Dietary and Building/Grounds $586,630 14% 4.16% 8% 55% 17% General Administration and Finance 5% average three year financial margin 1% Clinical Services Development Marketing/Outreach/ Community Relations Fiscal Year 2012 Program Admissions MN Care Self Pay 4% 4% PMAP Private Insurance 23% 24% *Including treatment expenses, prevention and community education 85% of Project Turnabout staff positions are directly related to patient care, with 75% of their time is spent working with patients and families 45% 6:1 Consolidated Treatment Fund oke and scared. Mark Sannerud, Director of Development and Marketing/Outreach 50% of Project Turnabout employees gave to the annual employee campaign, representing a 17% increase in funds raised 8 Regardless of the numerous fundraising challenges precipitated by a persistently sluggish economy and uncertainty about the future, Project Turnabout increased our fundraising totals by 10% over the previous year. We were able to increase the number of donors from 262 to 377, representing an increase of 44%. Project Turnabout also saw an increase in the number of donors that committed to a planned giving donation in support of our endowment fund. The continued support and growth of our endowment fund is vital to our long-term financial stability and ability to provide services to all individuals that enter our facility. The number of people seeking the hope of recovery and a better quality of life is growing. It is sad to say that only 10% of the people who need help for an addiction in our country are able to receive it, with the majority saying that the lack of financial resources for payment is the reason. The need for support and help is compelling. Project Turnabout is a leader in the field, providing access to treatment services that work while keeping our costs affordable, thus maintain our guiding principle of “keeping our doors open to all in need.” Helped by a number of talented and committed volunteers, Project Turnabout’s Caring and Sharing Golf Tournament and Appetite for Life events were very successful endeavors, generating record participation and contributions that supported our scholarship funds. 100% of the funds raised go directly toward scholarship support for our patients and families. Project Turnabout’s philanthropic mission and purpose is to garner philanthropic support to help those individuals and families suffering from alcohol, drug and gambling addictions. It is our mission, as an investment in the future, to continue to provide programs and services to ensure continued access to care for those in need. We do this by developing, managing, administrating and showing responsible stewardship of funds donated for charitable purposes and by fulfilling our guiding principle of “keeping our costs down and our doors open to all.” The wide variety of programs and facilities that allow us to meet patient treatment needs would not be possible without continued financial support from our alumni, families, friends and community. More than 50% of Project Turnabout’s full-time staff gave to the annual employee campaign. This generated a 17% increase in funds raised over the previous year. All employee contributions support the scholarship funds for the patients we serve. Our staff and volunteers are very committed to not only delivering the highest quality of care but also in “giving back” through scholarship support to those in most need and providing access to all seeking the hope of recovery. Thank you for your support and future consideration of helping those in need of hope! It’s only because of the generosity of supporters like you that we can continue to meet the growing demand for our services and offer the hope of recovery to so many more people. With your support, Project Turnabout will remain a sanctuary of hope where those who suffer from alcohol, drug and gambling addictions will always find an open door and open hearts, ready and able to help! To meet our guiding principle of assuring access to all that seek help, Project Turnabout continues to focus on increasing its fundraising efforts to help provide scholarship opportunities for those in need. Your investment is changing lives. 100% of your donations go directly toward scholarship support for our patients and families. $116,050.54 in scholarship funds were disbursed to 131 individuals and families to help defray treatment costs in Fiscal Year 2012 average donation made from an individual donor, representing an 8% increase over the previous year 377 250 262 200 50 FY 2004 FY 2005 191 100 160 150 156 $129 300 125 “The increase in the numbers of those giving to Project Turnabout’s patients and families reflects donors’ belief in our mission and our future.” 350 105 growth in the number of donors for fiscal year 2012, representing a 10% increase in donations 400 90 44% } Number of Donors Fiscal Year 2004-2012 86 { We are happy to donate to the funds that support those who otherwise would not be able to receive your healing care and help. All of us at Project Turnabout are immensely appreciative of the outpouring of support from the donors, supporters and referents that make our work possible. At the end of the day, it’s because of you that the patients and families attending treatment at Project Turnabout are able to find the hope of recovery. Although the words “thank you” often seem woefully inadequate to express the powerful, even overwhelming, feeling of gratitude – THANK YOU for all that you do for Project Turnabout’s patients and families.
