Information To Know Before You Go
Personal Documentation
American and Canadian citizens, including children, need
a valid passport to enter Costa Rica and Belize.
Currency
The colón is the Costa Rican currency; the Belize Dollar is
used in Belize. American funds are widely accepted, but
carrying these local forms of payment is recommended.
Cash and travelers checks can be exchanged at local
banks, money exchange facilities, and at most hotels. Most
credit cards are accepted in shops, hotels, restaurants,
and travel agencies. Credit cards automatically receive
the bank’s rate of exchange.
Climate
The climate is subtropical and can best be described as
mild. Costa Rica’s seasonal changes are not dramatic;
the Pacific coast is drier, while the Atlantic coast has
the most rainfall. The dry season runs from December
to May, with temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s;
the wet season runs from June to November and is
a great time to enjoy the lush foliage.
Dress
Dress in resort areas is casual, but some hotel
restaurants may have a dress code. Comfortable shoes,
sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are recommended, as
well as long pants for exploring the tropics.
For more than three decades, Swiss Travel Services
has lived up to their mission of providing the finest
travel management services to visitors in Costa
Rica. We recognize that our business is the business
of people, and with a highly trained staff comprised
extensively of representatives fluent in Spanish and
English, we ensure that travelers feel they are in the
best hands possible for a trouble-free and highly
enjoyable experience.
Food and Water
It is advisable to drink purified bottled water and
be careful about eating street food away from the
hotels and resorts.
Tipping
Check before adding a tip on your bill. The tip is often
included on your bill, so check the total before adding
a tip. Taxi drivers are not usually tipped, but tour
drivers generally receive one.

FULL-DAY TOUR
THE CITY & THE SANCTUARY
HALF-DAY TOUR
A transfer from Belize City on the Western
Highway brings you to the Caves Branch
River and its winding path through the Maya
Mountains and numerous ancient caves once
inhabited by the Maya. On arriving at Jaguar
Paw, be prepared for a 45-minute jungle trail
hike. Your guide will point out various plants,
roots, and herbs once used by the ancient
Maya. The entrance tunnel that heads into
the underground cave system is the start of
an “eye-opening” adventure. Your guide hands
out flashlights, and you are ready to float in
inflated inner tubes assisted by gentle currents
taking you through the cave system. Intricate
crystalline formations line the caves and
stalagmites and stalactites add to the serene
opulence of nature. Come dressed in bathing
suits, T-shirts, shorts, tennis shoes, or water
shoes. A change of clothes, shoes, and a towel
is recommended. After lunch, you will have an
opportunity to swim and relax before boarding
the tour bus for the return drive to Belize City.
This half-day getaway is a great overview of
Belize! Depart Belize City for the Belize Zoo,
a wonderful wildlife habitat, created as a
sanctuary for the country’s indigenous species.
Then it’s on to see the “city sights.” Belize City
today remains the commercial capital of the
country and is home to about 75,000 people.
Your guide will provide an interesting reflection
of the city’s history.
XUNANTUNICH & THE BELIZE ZOO
FULL-DAY TOUR
Depart Belize City traveling on the scenic
Western Highway, en route to Cayo and the
impressive Maya site of Xunantunich. Before
reaching the entrance of this ancient city, you
are taken across the Mopan River by a 19thcentury hand-cranked ferry. “El Castillo” (the
castle) is the largest. From the top of El Castillo,
view the panoramic vistas of the surrounding
rain forests, as well as the bordering towns
between Belize and Guatemala, followed by a
hot lunch at a Cayo-area restaurant. En route to
Belize City, you will make a stop at the Wildlife
Habitat known as the Belize Zoo, which gives
you the opportunity to view Belize’s prolific
wildlife in one location. This tour departs only
on Sunday and Wednesday and includes lunch,
refreshments, and entrance fee to the site.

Your tour begins with an enjoyable boat ride
that takes you several miles inland by way of

iguanas, several varieties of birds, crocodiles,
and troops of Howler Monkeys. At Burrell Boom,
a quaint settlement on the riverbank, you will
be served a tasty local lunch with refreshments
at the Olde River Tavern located on the bank of
the Olde Belize River. You then board your tour
bus and drive to Altun Ha (Maya for “Rock Stone

center linking the Maya on the Caribbean with
the Central American mainland Maya.
LAMANAI & NEW RIVER SAFARI
FULL-DAY TOUR
This is one of the most interesting tours in
Belize. A 45-minute drive up the Northern
Highway brings you to Tower Hill, where you
board a riverboat and head up the New River.
While traversing the many little creeks and
lagoons, it is easy to encounter hawks, kites,
and falcons. Dainty Jacanas lightly walk up on
the lily pads while the crocodiles bask in the
morning sunlight. At the entrance to the New
River Lagoon, the ruins of Lamanai (Maya for
submerged crocodile) rise into view. While
touring this site, huge masks, depicting dead
rulers and gods seem to materialize out of
the rain forest. The tour departs daily and
includes lunch, refreshments, and entrance
fee to the site.

and an adventurous mind for a full day of
activity. The reserve is teeming with hills and
valleys, rivers, waterfalls, swimming holes, and
caves all surrounded by the majestic beauty of
the pine forest. The three main stops are the Rio
Frio Cave, the Rio on Rapids and Pools, and road
conditions permitting, the 1,000-foot Hidden
Valley Waterfalls. Bring along your binoculars,
as there is much exotic flora and fauna to see;
these species are endemic to this extremely
rough but beautiful part of the country.
CROOKED TREE WILDLIFE
SANCTUARY
HALF-DAY TOUR
A 35-minute ride on the Northern Highway
brings you to the Crooked Trees Wildlife
Sanctuary and is a must for nature enthusiasts,
especially bird lovers. Crooked Tree provides
habitat for over 30 species of birds. The
majestic Jabiru Stork, the largest bird in the
Western Hemisphere with a wingspan of over
eight feet, can be found nesting in these
wetlands. Once you have crossed the causeway
that divides the large lagoon, your guide takes
you through the rustic village of Crooked Tree,
famous for it’s abundance of “cashew nut”
fruit trees. Local legend has it that the cashew
was the only fruit created by the devil.
A TALE OF TWO CITIES
HALF-DAY TOUR
This fascinating half-day tour focuses on the
contrast between the ancient Maya city of Altun
Ha and modern day Belize City, highlighting
1,000 years of development to this former
British Colony. Belize City today is home to
about 35 percent of the country’s population
and remains the commercial capital of the
country. Our tour will include historical sites
such as the Redbrick St. John’s Cathedral.

TERMS & CONDITIONS
What’s Included? After browsing through this brochure, or our Web site, tell us or your travel agent
where you want to stay, for how long, and what sort of things you want to do while you are there. We
will quote a price that includes a special airfare, hotel room and applicable hotel taxes, as well as
any airport transfers or optional features that may be available through AmericanAirlines Vacations.
Unless otherwise noted, as in the case of hotels identified as “All-Inclusive,” our quoted prices do not
include other taxes or governmental fees, meals, gratuities or security surcharges, porterage, car
rental drop-off fees, and items of a personal nature.
GENERAL CONDITIONS
Reservations: How Do I Book? If you are familiar with your chosen destination, you may want to book it
yourself either through our Web site at aavacations.com or by calling us at (800) 321-2121. If you are
not certain about any aspect of your plans, particularly if you are trying a new destination, we suggest
you let our specially trained representatives or your travel agent make your reservation to assure that
the vacation package is best designed specifically for you or your family.
Deposits and Final Payments: When Do I Pay? Once your specially designed vacation is booked, a deposit
of $100 per person is due within three (3) days. Final payment must be made at least 45 days prior to
your scheduled departure. From 12/17/2007–1/3/2008, final payment must be made 60 days prior to
departure. In some cases, there may be special airfares that offer better fares than our tour fares. In
those cases, full payment on the air portion may be due within 24 hours of booking. Bookings made
through our Internet site require deposit within 24 hours from the time of booking rather than the 3
days. We urge you to pay special attention to these dates because your booking will automatically be
cancelled if payment is not received. Again, payments can be made either by contacting us directly,
through your travel agent, or online for online bookings. AAdvantage® miles may also be used to pay
for hotels stays, airport transfers, and other features.
Price Guarantee: What if the Price Changes? The simple answer is that if the price increases after you
have given us a deposit, it’s our problem. We guarantee the cost of your vacation will not increase.
However, this guarantee does not apply to increases in fuel surcharges or air taxes. In some cases, there
may be special airfare sales that actually offer better fares than our tour fares. In those cases, we will
give you the option of either using the tour fares, with all the flexibility and protection they offer, or
using instead the sale fares. The sale fares are often not refundable and will be guaranteed only when
you make final payment on these sale fares, rather than from the time of your deposit.
Documents: What Sort of Vouchers or Tickets Will I Receive and When? AmericanAirlines Vacations will
send you two separate sets of documents. First, you will receive either an electronic ticket confirmation
or paper ticket (subject to printing surcharge if not using the electronic confirmation method), issued
for your air transportation. With electronic tickets all you need is a passenger receipt and passport.
Second, we will send you vouchers or confirmation slips for all of your land arrangements. These
documents will be mailed approximately three weeks prior to your departure date. We urge you to
review your documents thoroughly to ensure they are correct. To expedite documents, an additional
service fee of $25 would apply.
Restrictions and Fees: Are There Any Special Rules I Need to Know? Yes. In order to put together the
special values we offer, we have to impose some restrictions. For example, the minimum consecutive
stay we can offer is two nights. Other restrictions include:
Revisions/Cancellations: Rules and fees for revising air arrangements depend upon the type of
airfare used. Non-refundable fares remain non-refundable even when the AmericanAirlines Vacations
Administrative Service charge fees apply for changes to dates or destination. American Airlines lost
ticket policy will apply for reissuance of lost air tickets. For revisions to your land arrangements, a $25
revision fee will apply for each change after the documents are issued. In addition, no revision may be
made within 45 days of departure.
Cancellations: If a vacation is cancelled, AmericanAirlines Vacations will retain a cancellation fee.
Contact an AmericanAirlines Vacations specialist for details.
Any money to be refunded to you will be refunded in the same form of payment you used originally (i.e.,
credit card) and will be received within 6-8 weeks. Though we process refunds as quickly as possible, we
must receive the vouchers and/or air tickets we forwarded to you before we can release any refund. These
documents, any application for refunds or compensation, if permitted, must be submitted in writing to
us within 45 days of scheduled return and must be accompanied by all negotiable land documents and
air tickets. It is not necessary to return non-refundable air tickets. Vouchers must be returned to:
AmericanAirlines Vacations, Customer Service, Mail Drop 5445, P.O. Box 619616,
DFW Airport, Texas 75261-9616.
VACATION DETAILS
Please note that refunds are available only when vacations are properly cancelled within stated time
limits. Because our vacations are specially priced as complete, customized packages, we cannot refund
portions of the vacation price for unused or partially unused land components or features, including
unused hotel nights or other components such as car rentals, transfers or lift tickets. Travel Agents
please note: you must cancel records in your automated tour system or the land portion will not show
cancellation, and penalties may apply.
Late Bookings: We try to accommodate vacation bookings as little as 4 business days before departure, subject
to availability. Any booking within 15 days of departure, however, will include an expedite fee of $25.
AAdvantage: If applicable, AAdvantage miles are awarded once per booking to one AAdvantage member
who must be one of the passengers in the reservation. AAdvantage miles cannot be earned on multiple
reservations for consecutive days, known as back-to-back reservations. Mileage is awarded after travel
is completed. Members using any amount of miles as a form of payment will not be able to accrue
mileage credit in the same reservation.
Cancellation and Change Waiver
What if Something Goes Wrong?
Fee Waiver/Pre-Departure Protection: $59 per person. Allows you to revise your booking at any time
before 45 days prior to departure (no revisions are possible within 7 days), or to cancel your booking
entirely any time until your scheduled departure time, without incurring any revision or cancellation
fee. Some features of your vacation may not be refundable, even if this waiver is purchased. Other
conditions of this waiver may apply. Again, some airfares may be put on sale as non-refundable or with
other fare rules and those rules are not covered by this Waiver. Waiver is not available to purchase for
the travel dates 12/17/2007 –1/3/2008.
Airport Check-In: It is recommended that you check-in at the airport at least two hours prior to the
scheduled flight departure and report to the gates at least 30 minutes before the flight departure.
Failure to comply with these conditions may result in the loss of your seat.
Car Rental Requirements: Driver must be at least 25 years of age and in possession of a valid driver’s
license and a major credit card in their name. Car cost may not include drop charges, tolls, taxes,
surcharges, upgrades, recoupment fees, airport fees and optional charges such as protection options
and additional drivers. An under age fee will apply for drivers age 21-24 years. Rental charges are
based on each 24 hour period commencing at time of rental, with any additional hours subject to
extra charge. A major credit card or a cash refundable deposit is required to protect against incidental
charges and damages, payable directly to the rental car company. Car rental companies will not refund
any unused portion of a voucher.
