NEWS UPDATES IN ANIMAL WELFARE
One Man’s Friendship
Leaves a Lasting Legacy
310-SPCA Makes Reporting Animal
Cruelty Easier
310-SPCA is the 24/7 call centre for reporting animal cruelty concerns. Implemented
in April 2014, the call centre has received over 22,800 calls in the first year of service!
Should anyone have any concerns for the welfare of an animal in Ontario, they are
encouraged to call 310-SPCA. A trained operator will gather all the information reported
and ensure an appropriate response.
Ontario SPCA’s Major Case
Management Team
It has been one year since the implementation of the Major Case Management
Team. Under the supervision of the Deputy Chief, Major Case Management, a seven
member team, has been assembled and trained in specialized areas such as: forensic
identification, photography/videography, livestock, body recovery, entomology, media
relations and first aid training. Through continued development and training, this
specialized team is well equipped to respond to large removals, major cases and
emergencies on short notice to ensure distress is addressed efficiently and effectively.
The Major Case Management Team was deployed 16 times to assist with various cases
across the province, during its inaugural year. This team is available to respond at any
given time to assist Ontario SPCA Communities, Municipalities or other agencies!
Zoo Registry Update!
The Ontario SPCA has established a provincial zoo registry and identified 62 known
zoos in Ontario. This registry involves a cooperative zoo inspection led by the Ontario
SPCA zoo inspectors. These inspections have been both announced and unannounced
and are conducted during both the open and closed seasons. The Ontario SPCA will
continue to build this registry and conduct zoo inspections each year. This initiative
is helping to establish working relationships with zoos across Ontario and helps to
address Animal Welfare concerns when they arise.
Alex Hunt was not only a long time donor, but also an adopter
and friend to the Society. As a regular supporter, Alex would
tell everyone how he enjoyed seeing his funds at work
and hearing the stories of how he has helped the animals.
Kevin MacKenzie, Development Manager for Leadership
Giving, recalls sitting with him regularly over coffee to
discuss stories from the frontline staff and what amazing
work is being done across the province. This relationship
also nurtured an adoption of a new cat; a wonderful feline
friend that was with Alex until Alex’s passing this past year.
The Society was saddened to hear of this news and kept
their promise to care for and rehome his cat, “Toby”. As
his last gift to Animal Welfare, Alex left a significant legacy
gift of 75% of his estate in his will to the Society, a major
commitment to the animals across Ontario. Alex’s memory
will live on in the work that is done province wide to enhance
the lives of humans and animals. Thank you, Alex!
New Livestock Trailer
The Ontario SPCA responds to an average of 1,870 concerns for livestock each year.
There are situations where horses, cows, or even goats may need to be transported
from one location to another. Thanks to the Donner Canadian Foundation, the Ontario
SPCA is pleased to share the news of our new Rescue & Relief™ Livestock Trailer. This
new trailer is 25 feet in length, plus the gooseneck which can be used for storage of
equipment. It includes two internal dividers that allow Officers to separate the trailer
into three sections increasing the trailer’s functionality and versatility. A planned 160
linear feet of penning will be mounted on the sides which can be utilized to contain
animals or create a chute to load animals in to the trailer, making a more comfortable
loading process for the animals. This new resource will be available to assist all of the
Ontario SPCA Communities across the province, and is a great addition to our Rescue
& Relief™ services.
Provincial Investigations Building, Exotic
Wildlife
In collaboration with the Ontario SPCA, the Welland & District SPCA has established
a provincial shelter facility dedicated to the housing and care of exotic wildlife. The
location of this specialized resource is not disclosed and is available to any Ontario
SPCA Community for exotic wildlife that come into their care. The facility is operated by
experienced, trained staff who work with a network of experts to address the needs of
animals that come into the facility. This facility is a first for Animal Welfare in Canada in
addressing the specialized care required by exotic wildlife.
Cupcake Day
was a Sweet
Success!
In its third year, National Cupcake Day™ for SPCAs and
Humane Societies was once again a huge success. With
over 54 participating Societies, $550,000 was raised across
Canada to help animals in need. That’s a lot of cupcakes! The
Ontario SPCA was pleased to partner with celebrity baker
Anna Olson to help promote this annual event. In addition to
sharing the importance of supporting Animal Welfare across
the province, Anna also created a unique Ontario SPCA
Cupcake Day Recipe and even a recipe for the four
legged companions.

Food for Feral Cats
The Ontario SPCA is always looking for ways we can support Animal Welfare programs.
There are many individuals who volunteer their time and money to care for feral cat
colonies in their communities. The Society wanted to find a way to help support these
dedicated individuals and the animals they care for. The Feral Cat Food Bank is located
at Provincial Office and provides free cat food for feral cat colony managers that have
participated in the Toronto Feral Cat Coalition’s “Feral Cat Management” program. The
food has all been donated by our generous supporters. It’s a great initiative that helps
cats in local communities.

Guidelines for
Standards of Care in
Animal Shelters
Canadian Standards of Care in Animal
Shelters
The Canadian Standards of Care in Animal Shelters provides Animal Welfare
organizations across Canada with a comprehensive tool that helps align their activities
with recommended practices on all aspects of care. The Ontario SPCA Shelter Health
& Wellness team has been working to help Ontario SPCA Communities as well as
municipal shelters, utilize these guidelines and raise awareness for opportunities for a
healthier shelter environment. Through a consultation process, the team works with
staff within shelters to share best practices and identify opportunities to apply these
best practices to their own unique facility.

Pets Helps Reduce Pet
Overpopulation!
In 2009, the Ontario SPCA introduced high-volume spay/
neuter services to the province of Ontario. Since the
inaugural clinic opened, another five clinics have been
established by the Ontario SPCA and its Affiliated Societies.
In 2014, Ontario SPCA shelters saw a reduction in cat in-take
of 19% and some of our shelters have reported cat in-take
reductions of 40 to 50%! Encouraged by these results, the
Ontario SPCA and its Communities are working together to
expand access to spay/neuter services and to develop a
mobile spay/neuter service for First Nations Communities,
with a focus on remote and northern areas.

The Lincoln County Humane Society has taken an old board room and renovated it into
a new cat adoption room! This interactive adoption area has an entrance shaped like a
cat and houses 24 oversized white cages with plexiglas on one side. The glass allows
people to see the animals but helps prevent the spread of disease. In addition, the
11-square-foot cages have portals to litter boxes that are hidden from public view. The
cat rooms are designed to be larger to help create a less stressful environment for the
animals while they wait for their forever homes!

Let’s all Pledge to Have NO HOT PETS!
The award winning “No Hot Pets” campaign was back in 2014 and was a resounding
success! With over 20 million online impressions and close to 12,000 people
pledging not to leave their pets in their vehicles, the campaign exceeded all of our
expectations. The Society wants to thank the 41 participating SPCAs and Humane
Societies, 50 community partners and 22 car dealerships for helping to save pets
from harm. 2015 is expected to reach even higher numbers with close to 100 SPCAs
and Humane Societies! The campaign not only shares the dangers of leaving pets in
hot cars but also informs the public of the laws that protect these animals. Let’s all
remember, there is no good excuse to leave your pet unattended in a vehicle! Visit
nohotpets.ca to learn more about this very important campaign.

Adoption Stories!
The national adoption campaign, “iAdopt” was successfully
launched last year. Through sharing the real experience of
life changing adoptions, the program’s goal is to generate
awareness of the benefits of adoption and increase adoption
in shelters across Canada. The program was met with great
success, increasing adoptions of 10% on average from the
same time the previous year. The holiday campaign, “iAdopt
for the Holidays”, generated a great response for the holiday
contest. Adopters shared their life-changing adoption stories
and readers could then vote on their favourite story. The
winners will be featured in the 2015 iAdopt for the Holidays
campaign. To read these great stories visit iAdopt.ca.

Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™
SPCAs and Humane Societies across Canada along with the Ontario Veterinary Medical
Association (OVMA) are encouraging pet owners that if you’ve ‘Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™’.
When you have a pet, it is important to establish a relationship with a veterinarian.
This new campaign, established by the Ontario SPCA and the OVMA, promotes this
important message. Just one veterinary check-up a year will help protect against a
variety of potentially life-threatening diseases, detect health problems sooner, and avoid
unexpected costs.
In addition, this campaign encourages pet owners to visit gotapetgetavet.ca and
nominate and/or vote for their favourite vet clinic to win the Got a Pet? Get a Vet!™
Award! Visit gotapetgetavet.ca to see who will win in 2015!
It’s important to establish a relationship with a veterinarian when you get a pet. Just one veterinary check-up
a year will help protect your pet against a variety of potentially life-threatening diseases, detect health problems
sooner, and avoid unexpected costs. Don’t wait until something goes wrong to take your pet in for a check-up.
Schedule a visit with your local veterinarian to ensure a longer, healthier life for your pet(s).

Promoting Adoptions one
Litter Box at a Time!
Once again the Society is pleased to partner with Arm
& Hammer on our iAdopt campaign. Arm & Hammer
understands how important it is for cats to be comfortable
in their home, especially with their litterbox. Together with
Ontario SPCA shelters across the province, Arm & Hammer
will be promoting the importance of adoptions and providing
each new cat adopter with a free box of Arm & Hammer kitty
litter during our designated iAdopt campaigns. The kitty litter
donation is designed to help the animal transition into their
new home smoothly, allowing the family time to bond without
litterbox issues. Thank you Arm & Hammer for helping these
new families!
TSC Stores support animals across Ontario
one Hoof & Paw at a time
Ontario SPCA Communities and TSC Stores have been in partnership for the past
year, and what an exciting year it has been! By offering customers a paper paw or
hoof to sign and mount on the store wall for two dollars each, TSC Stores managed
to raise over $90,000 through four events throughout the year. The money raised
from each store will support their local Ontario SPCA Community shelter. The Ontario
SPCA is thrilled with this partnership and the support TSC Stores has provided towards
Animal Welfare in their local communities. Working together the team is hoping to raise
$100,000 in 2015 for Animal Welfare!
Royal Canin feeds our Shelters
Thousands of animals come into the care of the Ontario SPCA every year. Feeding a
consistent high quality diet is paramount to our standards of care. We are thrilled to
announce that Royal Canin Canada is our official feeding partner at all our branches
across the province! This new collaborative partnership is truly changing the lives of
animals in our care while also enhancing our staff and volunteers’ education about pet
nutrition through Royal Canin’s extensive education and training programs. As part of this
commitment to furthering the education of our staff, volunteers and adopters, Royal Canin
is also the presenting partner of the Ontario SPCA 2015 Educational Conference.

What Does V.A.L.U.E.
Stand For?
Operation V.A.L.U.E. (Vulnerable Animals Left Unattended
Everyday) is a crime prevention initiative designed to share
the laws that address areas of concerns such as: animals
left unattended in vehicles, abandonment, having suitable
sheltering and safety while travelling with an animal. The
Ontario SPCA has partnered with the Ontario Association
of Chiefs of Police, Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto Police,
York Regional Police, Crime Stoppers, Ontario Veterinary
Medical Association and the Ontario Association of Veterinary
Technicians. Operation V.A.L.U.E. began in 2012 in the York
Region/Greater Toronto Area and has continued into 2015,
where it has moved towards a provincial initiative, with
events planned throughout the province.
Over the past few years the Ontario SPCA is pleased to have developed great working
relationships with a variety of livestock commodity groups on addressing agricultural
Animal Welfare concerns across Ontario. The Society is excited to announce that
additional partnerships have been made this year. In addition to the Memorandums of
Agreement (MOA) made with dairy, chicken, beef, pork, veal, and sheep producers of
Ontario, the Society has new MOA’s with the Ontario Racing Commission, Ontario Goat,
and Fur Breeders of Ontario. Working together with the goal to help animals in need, the
MOAs have been a huge success.
Crime Stoppers a Partner in Animal Welfare
“Working together for Animal Welfare” has been an important motto for the Ontario
SPCA. The new province-wide partnership with Crime Stoppers is the latest way we
can all work to help more animals. This new partnership is designed to help alleviate
the pressure on police service resources regarding cruelty reporting for Animal Welfare
concerns. The Crime Stoppers team will contact the Society and Ontario SPCA officers
can respond accordingly.
Fixing Pets has Gone Mobile!
What exciting news! Mobile Spay/Neuter services are here! The Welland & District
SPCA recently announced the purchase of a new Mobile Spay/Neuter unit! Accredited
by the College of Veterinarians of Ontario (CVO), this unit is a fully equipped mobile
surgical clinic designed to travel where veterinarian services are limited. It was made
possible through the generosity of PetSmart Charities of Canada, and supporters of
the Welland & District Humane Society.
The Ontario SPCA is thrilled to provide support for these mobile services through our
veterinary services and medical resources.
New Home for the Sudbury
& District Animal Centre
and a Partner in Education
The Ontario SPCA Sudbury & District Animal Centre has
a new home. Now located within Collège Boréal, the new
adoption centre not only helps rehabilitate and rehome
animals, but also participates in the school’s Registered
Veterinary Technician program. All the animals at the Centre
will be cared for by our staff as well as the students at the
college, aiding in their practicum and helping the Society by
providing essential resources. The grand opening, celebrated
at Collège Boréal, had many distinguished guests including
both the Chief of Police and the Mayor of the City of Sudbury.

AMEX Canada Give Back #amexcares
Volunteers assist the Ontario SPCA in many ways throughout the year! As a
commitment to the community, AMEX Canada staff have shown their support for Animal
Welfare by offering their volunteer services! Two teams of over 50 people participated
in clean up days at the Provincial Education & Animal Centre, in Newmarket, helping
to paint the shelter walls, clean the building after the winter weather and help build a
garden to grow fresh veggies for the small animals staying in the shelter. This program
was such a success that a second team of AMEX staff volunteered a day at the AMEX
Canada head office to make over 100 cat and dog toys for the animals in the shelter.
Thank you AMEX Canada for your continued support - your commitment is helping
make the animals more comfortable while they are in our care!
Spay Neuter Services in North Bay
The North Bay & District Humane Society is proud to announce the opening of
the ‘North Bay & District Humane Society Pet Clinic’ at its current shelter location
(2060 Main Street West, North Bay). This milestone was made possible through the
generosity of PetSmart Charities of Canada and donors of the North Bay & District
Humane Society.
The clinic will allow the Humane Society to provide spay/neuter services to the public
for their pets, as well as providing access to spay/neuter services to other Animal
Welfare organizations, First Nations Communities and remote communities.
“This project is a milestone in the history of the organization that was established in
1954. The opening of the clinic will be a great addition to the operation and enhances
our core mandate and mission to ‘Provide, Protect & Educate’,” said Daryl Vaillancourt,
Executive Director, North Bay & District Humane Society.
Thunder Bay & District Humane
Society “Taking the Lead” to Help Pet
Overpopulation
MARS Canada Warms our
Hearts and Homeless Cats
in Ontario
Feral cats are often forgotten and left out in the cold. The
Ontario SPCA’s Shelter Health & Wellness team have a new
initiative to help give these felines a warm place to sleep
at night. The team has designed homemade shelters that
are sold to feral cat community managers at cost. They are
insulated and allow the feral felines easy access in and out
of the cold. They have been such a huge success that the
demand for more of these homemade homes is increasing.
Working with our Volunteer Department, we shared this
initiative with our friends at MARS Canada and their staff
has not only volunteered to help build more shelters but
also financially contributed to this program! Another great
example of how corporate volunteers and working together,
can help better Animal Welfare.
Closing the gap on the pet overpopulation crisis happens one pet at a time – through
spaying and neutering. There is a great need for an accessible spay and neuter
clinic in the Thunder Bay area and northwest Ontario region. There are currently no
available clinic options between North Bay and the Manitoba border, which makes the
need for spay/neuter services essential to the Thunder Bay area.
The “Take the Lead” initiative, involving Animal Welfare partners, the Ontario SPCA
and the Thunder Bay & District Humane Society, is an exciting fundraising campaign,
with a goal of opening a new spay/neuter service in the region!
The Ontario SPCA is pleased to see more communities working to provide spay/
neuter services across the province.
Giving Northern Dogs a Second Chance
This past spring, the Ontario SPCA and the Timmins & District Humane Society were
contacted by a local rescue group to assist in the transfer of 14 homeless dogs
found in a First Nations Community. Our Animal Welfare teams quickly gathered our
resources and most of the dogs were transferred down to the Provincial Education &
Animal Centre, in Newmarket, where they received medical treatment before being
placed for adoption. We are pleased to report that all the dogs have found loving
new homes! This is a great example of how working together in Animal Welfare can
achieve success for animals in need.
Spay/Neuter Initiative
Supports Pet Owners of Six
Nations of the Grand River
Earlier this year, the Six Nations Elected Council and our
friends at the Welland & District SPCA signed an agreement
for regular spay/neuter clinics utilizing the new Mobile Spay/
Neuter Unit.
On April 18-19th 2015, a milestone event took place on Six
Nations of the Grand River. The Ontario SPCA is pleased to
report the success of the first ever Mobile Spay/Neuter clinic.
The event was the first opportunity to use the new mobile
unit, with the intent of expanding the scope of the service
delivery model to other First Nations Communities, focused in
northern Ontario.
The clinic was run by a team of volunteers from the
organizations involved. Inspector John Greer of the Welland
& District SPCA, along with local veterinarian Dr. Tammy
Hornak, were the lead organizers for the project who worked
with Six Nations Animal Control Services Supervisor, Penny
Hill and Animal Control Officer, Lyall Martin.
The Ontario SPCA provided volunteers and resources.
Ontario SPCA Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Magdalena Smrdelj
provided health checks and monitored the animals during
recovery.
The event was made possible due to the generous donations
of many local volunteers including veterinarians, veterinary
surgeons, technicians, and supporters of the Welland &
District SPCA and of the Ontario SPCA.
