A Giving Update From Saint Elizabeth’s Community Development Foundation

St. Ann’s Courtyard is a peaceful and solace oasis for our residents. The
courtyard received a massive facelift thanks to the generosity of David
& Jeani Wodele and a host of other generous donors. (See story on page 16)

An advanced ultrasound system is the latest diagnostic tool being used to
safely view soft tissues, internal organs and the development of unborn
babes.
Saint Elizabeth’s involvement in community health improvment received a
shot in the arm with funding that supports efforts to promote 5210 Let’s
Go! wellness programming in schools, child care environments and other
community settings. Preventing falls and managing chronic conditions among
seniors is another important focus of our community health initiatives. (See
story on pages 2 & 3)

Scholarships for high school students, LPN students, associates, and associate
family members, bridge financial gaps, promote academic advancement and
encourage rural healthcare careers.
Residents are riding in style now that they have new wheels. The new
transportation bus, equipped with a wheechair lift and easy-to-use securement
system, makes trips to the countryside smooth sailing.

disease and diabetes can be prevented? Study upon study proves

diseases. Taking personal responsibility and making positive choices that promote wellness and well-being is your MO for health
improvement! This sounds easy, but we know it is not! In fact, most of
us struggle to make healthy choices a lifelong habit.
That’s where Saint Elizabeth’s comes in. For years, Saint
Elizabeth’s has been the “go to” place for people with chronic
diseases. Our medical-model approach helps people with heart
disease, after-effects from stroke, respiratory illnesses, diabetes
and other conditions. More recently, we have added a scope of
prevention programs that intervene before individuals are
diagnosed with a chronic illness. (Story continues on page 3...)

Unfortunately, there are barriers that stand in the way to successfully
accessing these services. Right now, most insurance plans do not cover
the costs of prevention services, and often fall short of fully covering
chronic disease management programs. Believing in and committed
to wellness, Saint Elizabeth’s continues to subsidize and underwrite
the cost of these services. Last year alone, Saint Elizabeth’s invested
over $80,000 in prevention and wellness so more people could take
advantage of these important programs.
As more focus is placed on keeping people well, Saint Elizabeth’s
wants to maintain and sustain a strong commitment to our wellness,
prevention and chronic disease management programs. To do this, we
need your help.
In years past, much of our fundraising zeroed in on supporting
capital improvements, facility upgrades and technology advancements. While these needs remain vitally important to protecting
our long-term viability, we also encourage our donors to consider
programming support that will expand access to these programs.

It takes a community of farmers to harvest big dreams. And this year was no exception.
In preparation for the spring planting of Saint Elizabeth’s Field of Dreams, area farmers
teamed up to move manure from the Wabasha County Fairgrounds to the fields surrounding
the medical center. Thanks to John Marx, Gary Kennebeck and Gene Marx, over 25 loads
of manure were loaded, transported and spread across the fields within two days.

every day for better health: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables; 2 hours
or less of recreational screen time; 1 hour or more of physical activity
and 0 sugary drinks – more water and low-fat milk.

communities helps Saint Elizabeth’s Medical
Center fulfill our mission to further the healing
ministry of Jesus by continually improving the
health and well-being of all people - especially
the poor - in the communities we serve. Every
gift is a blessing and a benefit.

2013, less than 1% of our foundation budget
was allocated to administrative expenses.

Donors support 5210 Let’s Go! program to improve community health
What do you get when you blend together an apple, banana, pea and
carrot? Not a smoothie, but a smooth cast of characters that help
promote the value of eating 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables
every day. They’ve shown up at parades, fairs and classrooms. Their
message is simple, but very important. It’s part of the 5210 Let’s
Go! for wellness that encourages four daily behaviors where people
live, work, learn and play. Along with promoting healthy eating, they
also encourage 2 hours or less of recreational screen time, 1 hour or
more of physical activity, and 0 sugary drinks with more water and
low-fat milk.
The 5210 Let’s Go! fruit and vegetable mascots are
showing up everywhere to promote healthy eating.
Funding from this year’s Ribbon Challenge Golf Benefit, a
“Covidien Cares” Community Grant and other foundation donations
are supporting our efforts to increase these healthy behaviors, which
will lead to healthier children and families.

Matching Funds: Many employers will match, dollar for
dollar up to a certain maximum, any charitable donation
made by an employee or retiree. When making your next
contribution, check into your employer’s charitable giving
program.
St. Ann’s Courtyard
receives generous makeover
St. Ann’s Courtyard, which resides within Saint Elizabeth’s
Health Care Center’s Alzheimer’s Unit, had seen better days.
Years of wear, tear and weather gave way to a tattered and
scruffy space that saw few guests. An extreme makeover was
in order.
In comes David Wodele. When he learned of the need to
refurbish the courtyard, he put his talents, skills and
giving spirit to work. His inspiration, in part, was his desire
to pay tribute to the memory of his youngest sister, Jill Cerise
Wodele, who died at age 21 of a rare blood disease.
“It was the most gratifying job I have ever accomplished,” he
confides. “It was even more meaningful knowing I was doing
this in remembrance of Jill. Honestly, I have never felt more
satisfied.”
