ROARING RORY IS BACK AND SO IS
THE FABULOUS JEANNIE LEWIS
America, Canada, Europe and other nooks
and crannies of the earth.
The fabulous Rory McLeod returns to
Australia, and he’s back at one of his
favourite haunts- The Illawarra. If you saw
him at the 2013 Festival then you’ll walk
over hot coals to be there, if you missed him
you should do yourself a favour and make
sure you don’t this time. And we’ve got
the fabulous Jeannie Lewis, accompanied
by Banjo Man Maurie Mulheron and
Argentinian Guitarist Justo Diaz on the
same bill.
Rory is a truly unique modern travelling
troubadour weaving his Cockney spruik
into highly rhythmic Latin/ reggae/ blues
inspired music, a one man soul band and
once seen never forgotten.
Rory Mcleod - ex-circus clown and fire eater.
A one man soulband, poet and storyteller,
singing his own unique upbeat dance
stories. A modern travelling troubadour
using tap shoes, acappella, harmonica,
guitar, trombone, spoons, finger cymbals,
bandorea, djembe and various percussion
instruments! Rory has travelled the globe
for different reasons at different times,
from Asia to the middle East from Gambia
to Cuba, Central America, Australia, North

improved the product and its complex
impact on our senses. "

Jeannie Lewis has for thirty-five years been
a singer, recording artist, actor, writer and
teacher. Her performances are pure theatre;
blending elements of dance, theatre, visual
arts, spoken word and music.
She has toured overseas extensively and
has developed a lifelong interest in 'other'
languages the people who speak them
and their cultures. This culminated in the
acclaimed show 'Piaf, The Songs and the
Story' which took all by storm in 1995. Her
first album 'Free Fall through Featherless
Flight' was awarded the Best Female Vocal
Album in the Australian Radio Record
Awards and two of her Solo Shows "Voxy
Lady" and "For a Dancer" have premiered
at the prestigious Adelaide Festival of
Arts. Jeannie will be accompanied by her
old mate and Folk Club member Maurie
Mulheron and great Argentinian guitarist
Justo Diaz.
GOOD FRIDAY COMES A WEEK EARLY
Another Good Friday- Well actually it is the
week before the official Good Friday- it’s
April 11th but it won’t just be a good Friday
Night at the Illawarra Folk Club it will be a
great night with the famous Alaskan String
Band and the powerful Voice of our own
Duncan Chalmers. (He’s bringing the rest
of his body along too).
We think this review in the Age Newspaper
by Gordana Andjelic-Davila on March 15th
sums it up. Gordana gives good advice so
we recommend that you take it. Here’s
what she said:“I had the privilege and pleasure of
attending the Alaska String Band’s concert
at the Mechanic’s Institute last night,
and like the rest of the attendees I was
completely floored by their performance.
Winners of the Fame Awards – Bluegrass
Band of the Year, the Alaska String Band’s
members are a gifted guitar picking, violin
fiddling, dulcimer playing, bass banging,
mean banjo jammin’ and cheese grater-ascraping family of five, who also deliver
some sweet angel-like sounding vocals.
As if all of the above was not enough,
the eldest daughter Laura, is quite the
comedienne, speaking in an intentionally
shy/awkward and endearing tone, she had
the crowd in stitches. The rest of the family,
dad Paul, mum Melissa, brother Quinn
and little sister Abigail pitched in between
songs, verbally weaving a colourful image
of their home town and state so vividly
and enticingly that, surely America’s
49th state’s official tourist website must
experience huge spikes from online visitors
after each “Z-Family” performance.
Originally inspired by the McLain Family
Band (www.mclains.com) and The Sound
of Music, the Zahasky family began
performing internationally in 2006, playing
some of America’s favourite roots, swing,

jazz, pop, original, folk, gospel and
Bluegrass music.
Being a huge fan of the close harmony
singing group of the swing and boogiewoogie eras, the Andrews Sisters, I was
particularly impressed by the group’s
rendition of the famousBoogie Woogie
Bugle Boy and Chattanooga Choo Choo.
However, singling out just two songs is a
“crime” as all of last night’s performance
by the Alaska String Band was exceptional,
from beginning to end. When (if) my own
family of five become the next big string
band, I’ll have to credit the Zahasky family
as our inspiration, they are that great!
As the show drew to a close, “Encore!”
was heard echoing throughout the
packed theatre. After their last piece and
final group bow, they were applauded,
cheered and awarded with a duly deserved
standing ovation. The Alaska String Band
is in Australia just a short while longer, I
urge you to find them and buy tickets to
their show(s), now!”
Then there is Duncan Chalmers. Duncan,
a member of our club hails from Bundeena
where he catches whiting and sings, though
he is a far better singer than fisherman.
With two acclaimed albums to his credit
Duncan, as well as being a gifted song
writer is a very fine interpreter of the songs
of others. His ‘Christmas in the Trenches,
(JohnMcCutcheon) and Cold Missouri
Waters (James Keellaghan) are classics
and must hears. Over the years Duncan
has been a regular at the Festival and has
led, always popular, singing sessions. With
a powerful baritone voice, Duncan has a
commanding stage presence and a dreadful
sense of humour. (He’s a mate of mine so I
can write these things about him-Bigruss)
It’ll be a great night and for sure when its
over you’ll never think of Sarah Palin again
when you hear the word Alaska- You’ll
think of their famous string band.

A TOM LEWIS RESURFACES
After 25 Years of living underwater
without drowning, even once, Tom Lewis
is resurfacing at the Diggers Club on
Saturday 26th April. Not drowning under
water is not bad for a folksinger whose
mouth is rarely closed. For 25 years
Tom Lewis was a submariner so it’s not
surprising that many of his songs are about
the sea.
Tom's repertoire - from traditional shanties
to songs fashioned out of his own seafaring
background - recruits his audience for a
voyage by turns reflective, dramatic and
humorous. Tom was born in Northern
Ireland but has spent much time in Canada
and that Celtic heritage is obvious in his
clear, strong voice, evoking quiet sorrow
for a fisherman lost to the sea just as
honestly as it powers out a shanty "to be
heard above the gales."
26-28 September 2014
With songs that have become folk standards;
known and sung wherever great choruses
ring out; Tom accompanies himself on
button accordion and ukulele - but it's
that powerful vocal style and infectious
humour - that quality of entertaining which keeps audiences coming back again
... and again.
As winner of the inaugural "Trophée
Stan Hugill", French fans dub Tom "The
Springsteen of Sea Chanteys". Old Songs
Festival (Altamont NY) declares "This
man knows the sea ... from the bottom
up!", whilst Living Tradition (UK) says
"Although I always knew he was good, I
was not quite prepared for HOW good." 24
years in the British Royal Navy, "provides
him with that vitally authentic stance
with which to tackle nautical song" Living
Tradition. Tom last came to Australia 13
years ago and played at our festival when
it was at Jamberoo. People who saw him
then will be rushing back to see and hear
him again. He has one of the most powerful
voices in the folk scene and amplification
and sound systems are things he doesn’t
take seriously.
The Thomsons specialise in original
music that tells a story. Their songs are
sourced from the trials and trails of life,
and extensive and exotic travel experiences.
One of the songs from their latest album
‘Dancing with Dahlia’ has been played on
radio for Remembrance Day, and is also the
opening track on ‘Trad & Now’ magazine’s
‘Pick of the Crop’ CD. The Thomsons
are regulars at vineyards, restaurants
and small independent venues with the
emphasis on a fine acoustic sound, and a
listening audience.

CLUB MATTERS
The Club held its AGM (belatedly because
we now have to, by law, a full financial
audit), on Tuesday March 25th at the
Diggers Club.
The office holders for this year are:
President Russell Hannah
Vice President Mairi Petersen
Secretary Graeme Morrison
Treasurer Mark Doran
Committee Members: David De Santi, Neil
Rowsell, Rod and Judy Cork, Bruce ant
Robyn Jackson, Janet Barnes, Tony Foley,
Peter and Yvonne Butler, Aviva Sheba,
Lotte Latukefu and Rob and Cathy Wagner
Below is the Presidents report for the
2012/2013 year
PRESIDENTS REPORT
2012/2013
I suppose that this could be called a
sesquiannual report given that we have
delayed this AGM for 6 months to give us
time to get our books audited.
It has been a good year financially for
the club which I’m sure you will agree
with when you hear our treasurer, Mark
Doran's report, At this stage we are not in
danger of reducing the club’s activities to
mere sessions in a pub. (as much as we’d
probably like to).
2012-13 has again been a good year for
the Club. Our club concert numbers were
consistently good even during winter. Part
of our charter is to present quality folk acts
8
Apr il 2 014
to our members and provide Illawarra
venues for our local and imported groups
In this I believe we have fulfilled our
obligations to our aims and objectives in a
highly effective way.
The year saw a strong contigent of well
known performers visit the club. From
overseas came two Grammy award winners
in Dom Flemmons and Rick Nestler from
the US. Also from the US we had George
Mann and Rick Palieri, Gregory Page and
Eric Erdman. Josephine Paulson came from
Sweden with her Nykelharp, Don’t Mention
the Wall from Germany and the great Vin
Garbett from the UK. Eleanor McEvoy from
Ireland again graced our club as did Eskil
Romme from Denmark and La Vent Du
Nord from Canada.
One highlight was the enticing of the old
rapscallion Blue the Shearer out of his lair
in the Blue Mountains to what was his
only concert for the year at Mairi Petersens
House.
From interstate we had some great
performers through the year. Try this for a
list: from Victoria- The Hannafords, Martin
Pearson, Maria Forde, Bruce Watson,
Danny Spooner, Alana and Alicia, Stetson
Family, Graham Dodsworth and enda
Kenny. From Queensland came Sunas and
Breaking Heart Benton while the Borderers
represented South Australia and Peter
Hicks came up from Tasmania. Marcus
Sturrock from WA also added to our
Australia all over. Humbug from the ACT
also joined us at the club.
And we don’t neglect our locals (after all
we are the Illawarra Folk Club). The list is
impressive and includes:
Arietta, Pete Thomas, No Such Thing,
Stewart Holt, Butcher Boys, Berkeley
ILL AWARR A FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER
Songbirds, Rebecca Moore, Alan Blackshaw,
Wongawilli, Rusty Hinges, Pukara,
John Nichols and Wolfgang, Illawarra
Union Singers, Chordeaux, Danni Karis,
Kaija Upeneiks, Serbian dancers, Claire
Roberts (Joan Baez Show), Con Artists,
Bowralhouse, Ruido Flamenco, Zorbas Kefi,
Big earl, Nothing But Jam,Pete Bennett,
Timbre Stain, Tia Juana and the Iguanas,
Pete Bennett, Timbre Stain, Emma Hannah
and Kenny, My Secret Window and Dani
Karis.
From the Northern Suburbs - that’s Sydney
and beyond we welcomed Terry Serio,
Christina Mimmocci, Buck and Deanne,
Mike McLellan,Butch and Tony, Bob
Campbell, Chippo Days, Chaika, Maureen
O’Brien, CJ Shaw, Ami Williamson and the
Thompsons.
We have had a Mystery Performer at every
concert (we had our first one in 2009 and
have had one at every concert since) I’d
like to thank all those people who came
along without any fanfare or publicity and
opened the concert each night.
The Club also launched CDs for No Such
Thing, Claire Roberts and Dani Karis as well
as a special showing of the Dall' Italia All'
Australia film with music by I Viaggatori
and tribute concerts to Joan Baez (by Claire)
and Woody Guthrie by Peter Hicks and
Friends.
Sadly this year saw the demise of Folk in
the Foothills which we had run for 10 years
at the Jamberoo Valley Lodge. The Lodge
was sold and its future became in doubt.
Where one door shuts however another
opens and we were able to move it to Kiama
and expand it a little. A makeover and a
name change and it is now Folk by the Sea.
Comment on that however is legitimately
the province of the next AGM report.
Another of our activities were the four free
lunchtime concerts that we put on in the
Art Gallery in November 2103. These were
well received and our audiences ranged
from 35-60. The Art Gallery was very
happy with them too. We also took a stage
at Wollongong’s Viva La Gong and played
Folk Music all day to appreciative crowds.
We still have fairly unfettered access to the
City Diggers Club which is an excellent
venue and our sound man, Phil Nixon,
continues to provide the best sound that
we have ever had. I would like to put on
record our appreciation to the Diggers and
in particular our contact, Robbie Rodwell
who continues to be one of the Club’s best
friends
With great weather, apart from ‘hot Friday’
the 2013 Festival was our most successful
yet. Not only was it an artistic success,
we managed to turn a small profit so we
are in the game for 2014. Our thanks to
all our sponsors, particularly Bluescope
and Tourism NSW. The Festival will be
reported on by Festival Artistic Director
David De Santi and Project Director, Neil
Rowsell.
It should be recorded that the Club is highly
appreciative of the countless hours and
dedication that Dave has put into taking the
Fe
stival to the new heights that it has
achieved. That he does this in a voluntary
capacity and fits it into a busy schedule of
work (paid), Newsletter Editor, Dance Club
Guru and active musician and director of
the Snowy Mountains Festival is nothing
short of amazing to us mere mortals. We
are also highly appreciative of the support
given to Dave by his good lady wife Tania,
whose tolerance is legendary.
It is the festival however that swallows up
much of our energies- and here I want to
thank Operations and Project Director,
Neil Rowsell, who organizes the meetings,
negotiates with various parties, keeps the
records and is generally the logistic master
of how it operates. He also keeps it as part
of the legal entity that is the Folk Club by
making sure everything that is done is
approved by our committee. Neil will give
a separate report that can be incorporated
into our minutes.
Thanks also to our hard working Secretary,
Graeme Morrison who also is very good
with legal advice A big thanks also to Mark
Doran who has the odious task of making
sure that our finances are in order As well,
he also has the task of either controlling the
door or organising someone else to do it.
I cannot help be amazed at the work that
Rod and Judy Cork and Bruce and Robyn
Jackson have put into both the club and the
Festivals. Judy now keeps our Membership
list and Robbie does incredible work with
ticketing the concerts and Festival. Thanks
also to their respective garages that for
some time have been the repository of Folk
club ‘junk’.
Thanks also to all the members of the
committee who have worked hard to
keep the club both solvent and viable. To
Dave, who does a great job ensuring our
newsletter appears monthly, To Peter and
Yvonne for their help on the door and
Terry and For a Cole likewise, to our Raffle
Sellers at the concerts, Janet, Peter, Mairi
and Graeme go our thanks
Thanks also to Tony Foley for his work on
the Newsletter and his always consistant
support. Thanks must also go to Yvonne
O’Grady, Dennis McKay and John
Broomhall who, along with myself have
ensured our Folk Radio Programme on
VOX FM continues to be both high quality
and regular.
I’d also like to express our thanks to Peter
O’Neill who carried the mantle of publicity
and sponsorship officer during the yea
r Peter has subsequently resigned and
his absence a great loss. We wish Peter
well on both his travels and anything
else in which he is involved. I’d also like
to thank especially Yvonne O’Grady,
Bill Montgomery and Mairi Petersen for
providing for accommodation for many of
our touring artists and for providing venues
for house concerts. There is no doubt that
one of the reasons so many of our artists
want to return is so they can again sample
the hospitality of Yvonne, Kath, Monty
and Mairi. Also to Barry and Judy Spooner
who have made their house at Minnamurra
available for house concerts.
Quo Vadis- I think we should not fall into
the trap of just being seen as putting on
concerts every fortnight, though this is an
important aspect of what we do. When
dealing with performers agents who often
see no need for a support act (or even a
mystery) I constantly have to remind them
that we are a club and they are coming to
a club concert that we hold each fortnight.
It’s good that we have some big name artists
but it’s always on that understanding and
those conditions. We should define what
sort of beast we are (a folk club) and it bears
having a serious conversation abou,t so the
future doesn’t deteriorate into us just being
another organization that puts on concerts.
The club will certainly push ahead with
our usual fortnightly concerts- perhaps we
should look at more theme and ‘five pack’
concerts which seem to be popular. They
also have the advantage of providing more
opportunities for artist to have a gig before
an appreciative audience. There are not
many of these venues around these days.
Perhaps we should look at more social trips,
but. Sometimes fitting these in to an already
busy calendar can be difficult.
Perhaps we could look at a quarterly ‘free’
concert on a Sunday Afternoon. Some of
our older members have expressed a desire
to have a daytime concert as they find it
difficult getting out at night.
Given the problems associated with the site
(Road etc) there is a constant worry that
the sword of Damocles is always hovering
above our head. I’d suggest that 1915 is all
OK as will the year after. We will confront
our problems when they occur.
Thanks to everyone who has worked hard
for the club this year and we look forward
to a successful year in 212/13 and I wish all
members well for the coming year.

realise what a great night out it is and what
a good place to play and socialise. We
oscillate between big crowds (Pete Seeger
230, Eleanor McEvoy 150) to surprisingly
small crowds of 14 and 25 in February. It
doesn’t matter the size of the crowd The
entertainment at the smaller nights was
superb and anyone who went to see The
Hollands and Jonathon Bob Lynn and Tia
Juana and Alistair Brown walked out with
big smiles on their faces. We have some
great talent down here and they are worth
supporting. Our membershio Secretary
Judy Cork tells me we now have over 750
members and here’s another 31 that have
joined already this year. It’s a big welcome
to them all and we hope you have a great
time with the club.

G’day Joe Hockey, George Pell
here. All roads lead to Rome,
I’m going to wear my surplice
to help me feel at home.
I got an urgent message, from
whatsisname? The Pope,
And it said: “I need you urgently …
you’re our great white hope.”
It seems finances in the Vatican,
are what it’s all about,
And they need George Pell from Aussie
land to help them sort it out.
Cash crisis in the Vatican, isn’t very nice,
So Joe I’m ringing you, for
some sound fiscal advice.
ILL AWARR A FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER
Congratulations George, on
your new promotion,
I’m sure that you deserve it for
your Catholic devotion.
I’d advise you copy Vesteys,
they had the right idea,
Up on Wave Hill Station. It
might sound severe,
But I’m working on the same idea
with industry and passion,
Don’t pay priests their wages …
make them work for rations.
Alan Joyce? George Pell here.
All roads lead to Rome,
So it looks like I’ll be travelling
far across the foam.
The Vatican wants me to come up
with some quick resolution
To their financial problems. Could
you help with a solution?
George, five thousand priests will have
to go, to keep the wage bill down,
Cutting costs will fix it, and
guarantee renown.
They don’t have a union. There’s
no need for you to fret,
You’re extremely lucky, you don’t
have to face that threat.
Cutting costs could well send
the clergy into shock,
Example: Get rid of the casses,
but let them keep the socks.
Prime Minister, George Pell here.
All roads lead to Rome,
I’m heading there, well-equipped
with my fine tooth comb.
Finances in the Vatican, are
in need of some repair,
I thought, with your experience,
you could help me there.
I’m aware that times are parlous, if
you can’t help … no sweat …
I’m not after money … could
you guarantee the debt?
Gina might advance a loan. That
thought did not occur,
bestowed Life Membership on two of our
Stalwarts, Yvonne and Peter Butler. The
life membership badges were presented
before a large Crowd on Friday Night
at the Eleanor McEvoy Concert. Eleanor
dedicated one of her songs to them both.
Here is their citation which was read out
at the concert.
Peter and Yvonne Butler have been
members of the Illawarra Folk Club since
1997 and have been members of the
committee for over 15 years.
You say she’s rich and powerful.
I’m in ore of her.
Thanks PM for that advice, but
I don’t have the nerve,
To approach someone that powerful,
but I’ll keep her in reserve.
Well, it’s goodbye to Australia.
All roads lead to Rome,
And one day my endeavours
could end up in a pome.
I’ve gleaned the best advice there
is, from Tony, Alan, Joe,
And armed with all this knowledge,
I’m keen to have a go
At fixing all those problems, now
worrying the Vatican …
And in answer to the question ‘can
George do it?’ … THAT HE CAN.

It’s good to see the Illawarra getting
an organisation that can promote
culture in a tangible way and help get
projects off the ground in a tangible
way. Its Culture Bank and the Folk

years. There is more detail below in

The photo above was sent to me
by a person who wishes to remain
anonymous (but he is a poet, with first

could impact on his/her/ their chances

poet he had nothing to worry about as

As mentioned in the Newsletter the Club
finally held its AGM last Tuesday. We don’t
have many Life Members but the AGM
They have been active in the organization
of the festival during almost all of this
time. During this time the Festival has
grown enormously and being on the
committee involves a considerable amount
of involvement and work.
It would be fair to say that the Festival is
in the financial position it is today because
of Peter and Yvonne’s foresight to establish
our own bar on the grounds back in 1998.
Previous to this we relied on the Jamberoo
Pub to be the watering hole for the Festival.
Peter and Yvonne, along with Graeme
Morrison, and Simon Hurford; people well
steeped in the presentation and drinking
of fermented and spirituous liquors felt
that a bar would bring us in the additional
funds we needed to keep the festival afloat
as well as providing a central hub for
festival patrons to socialize. And so it has
proved to be.
If the Club had a social secretary it would
be fair to say that Peter and Yvonne would
collectively be it. They are forever looking
for opportunities to promote the club, they
act as talent scouts when they go to other
festivals, take material about our club and
festival to hand out at these places and
have a circle of friends who they have
cajoled into coming and have stayed on
as members. Peter’s first contact with the
club was when he came to a tripe night at
Jamberoo in the mid nineties and brought

an entourage of over 20 lost souls.
Peter and Yvonne have been willing
workers on club nights and are extremely
proficient raffle ticket sellers. As well
they have often staffed the door when the
treasurer has been unable to be present.
Peter has also looked after the 1300 number
on occasions when Bruce and Robyn
Jackson have had other activities.
Being extremely gregarious they give a
human face to the club concerts and when
artists leave and say what a friendly club
we are you can bet that they have been
talking to Peter and Yvonne. They are also
great sounding boards and will always give
a frank appraisal of how they feel about
club activities,
All told Peter and Yvonne’s contribution
to the Club has been significant and
immense and they have earned a welldeserved reward. We hope that they can
continue to come to the concerts and the
Festival and at continue to enjoy some of
the entertainment that they have helped
to foster.
They are worthy recipients of life
membership and I so nominate them.

Vale Dennis
O'Keeffe
It’s been a bad year for folkies departing
the scene and the month of March has been
no exception.
Sad to report the death of Dennis O’Keeffe
from Cancer in early March. Dennis was a
regular at our folk festival and played at
the club on a number of occasions. When
you lose someone you often reflect on the
first time you met and the last time. In 1991
the club took a bus to the National Folk
Festival in Adelaide (The last time it was
held outside of Canberra). We stopped at
Murray Bridge and hired house boats for
a couple of days.
Of course you’d cruise around during the
day and when evening was approaching
you would pull the houseboat into the
shore light the fire and proceed to have a
session/concert. There was already a boat
pulled into the shore and when we pulled
up beside it there was a bloke playing a
guitar and singing some folky style music.
It was Dennis O’Keefe who hailed from
Warnambool where he was an optometrist.
It turned into one of those great nights that
are unplanned for but become memorable
(The whole Wongawilli Band was there).
12
A p r il 2 014
He too was heading for the National where
he hoped to meet with John Dengate. He
duly did of course and Dengate songs
became part of his repertoire.
The last time we met was in August last
year when Dennis came up to attend John
Dengate’s funeral and wake, I remember
him singing John’s TAB punters song.
He told me afterwards that the doctors
had declared him cancer free (they were
wrong) Dennis had been under treatment
for cancer for some years. And was only
57 when he died.
Dennis was one of the nation's leading
performers of Australian traditional
songs, and has been a successful songwriting teacher for over ten years. For
as many years, he has led the Australian
traditional song sessions at the National
folk Festival in Canberra. Dennis played
the anglo-concertina, an instrument that
came to Australia during the gold-rush of
the 1850s. Dennis had been at the birth of
hundreds of songs, having written some
forty songs about Australian history, and
nurtured many song writers from their first
idea through the first public performance
of their song.
During 1991 Dennis O'Keeffe sat alone in
the windswept Tower Hill cemetery near
Koroit and wrote a song for union shearer
Billy McLean, who was shot during the
violent 1894 shearer's strike. Little did he
know, this was the beginning of twenty
years research into the fascinating story of
Waltzing Matilda. Since then his passion
for the true story behind Australia's pseudo
national anthem has seen him singing
Waltzing Matilda in almost every corner
of Australia, including the barren western
plains of Queensland on the very spot
where the song was written, to the remote
banks of the Darling river where the paddle
steamer The Rodney was burnt by striking
shearers in 1894.
ILL AWARR A FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER
Twenty years of painstaking research
into the origins of Waltzing Matilda,
combined with his knowledge of
Australian traditional songs and proven
song-writing ability, gave Dennis an
intimate understanding of how the song
was recognised his greatest education was
his twenty-five years involvement at the
forefront of the Australian Folk Movement.
His craft of story-telling evolved through
continuous performances of our wonderful
Australian traditional songs and his
uncanny ability to compose unique songs
pertaining to the tradition.
It all culminated in the publication of his
book, ‘Waltzing Matilda- The secret history
of Australia’s Favourite Song.’ Which will
go down as the definitive history of the
song.
Dennis also had a love of horses and owned
one which he appropriately called – ‘Suit
The Office’ (You can work out where the
name came from yourselves) He sang
Waltzing Matilda to the assembled punters
at the Warnambool Racing Carnival a
number of times.
All round we have lost a great researcher,
a great singer, a great songwriter and a
great bloke.
Our condolences go to his widow Anne
and the rest of the family including his sons
Joel and Ryan

clips on http://www.youtube.com/

ILL AWARR A FOLK CLUB NEWSLETTER
Judy Cork, Membership Secretary
Newsletters,
Technology & A Spider
My wife’s embraced technology,
Her head’s in an I-Cloud,
And when I say - “you’re just a
nerd" She says it makes her proud.
The house is full of I-phones,
I-tunes are everywhere,
When the conversation turns to
Apps, It’s more than I can bear.
We don’t have any books no more,
Just Kindles, they’re the rage,
She says reading books is tiresome
, For you have to turn a page.
When she sees me read the paper,
And sees me post a letter,
She says, I am a Luddite,
As there’s ways that are much better.
She said I should try I-Pods
And this verse I should e-mail ya
She’s embarrassed that she’s
married to an electronic failure.
We were sitting in our sunroom
I think she was on Twitter
I said please pass the folk newsletter
dear, I thought I heard her titter.
She looked at me with a silly grin
And said I was quite sad,
She said - “Newsletters are now quite
passé, Here try my new I-Pad.”
I reached and took the I-Pad I
still knew I had to ‘git ‘im’,
And I’ll tell you now that spider,
Just didn’t know what ‘hit ‘im’

For the people who really prefer to
have a hard copy to sit on the coffee
table etc you can do this by printing
your electronic copy and you can then
have it to read whenever and wherever
you like.
Then again hard copy does have its
uses. (Computers can't change nappies
and............ read on)

It saves the Club quite a bit and is a very
environmentally friendly thing to do.
Obviously not everyone has internet
connections so we will still post out
a hard copy but if you can help by
taking an electronic copy that would
be appreciated.
