Over the years Chihuly has amassed a wide array of interesting collections from which he finds inspiration: wool trade blankets, Edward S. Curtis American Indian photogravures, classic motorcycles, vintage neon signage, small Buddha statues, Native American baskets and carvings, and sports cars, to name a few. It is, however, his heartfelt devotion to his beloved hometown of Tacoma, Washington, and through the topography, climate, diverse community, and rich history of the Pacific Northwest that he continues to find many of his greatest artistic inspirations. page 6 Dear Matika, “Thank you so much for making an incredibly valuable contribution to all cultures through this exhibit.” Name: Susan G. Age: 68 Heritage: Russian “Thought provoking as it is beautiful. You’ve captured humility and strength. Continue onwards. What you do is so very worthy.” Name: Pauletto E. Age: (blank) Heritage: Jewish “The photographs that my eyes have seen today are deeply moving. Grandmother’s hands brought back the memory of my grandmother’s weaving. Like the patterns in her rugs, her life has left a pattern in her hands. Thank you for this beautiful gallery.” Name: Alexandria D. Age: 17 Heritage: Navajo “I am not of your country, but have images of “Indians” burned into my brain by Hollywood & other mainstream media. Most of those images are not positive. That’s why I found your exhibition so inspiring—You brought me “real” people...People with lives, relationships & differences that make them human. Thank you.” Name: Leone M. Above are some excerpts. CITY/STaTe page 7 Ink This! Contemporary Print Arts in the Northwest June 7-November 9, 2014 “Ink This!—a striking exhibition of Northwest print arts at the Tacoma Art Museum—captures the unique characteristics and quixotic variations of printmaking. There are linocuts, letterpress prints, accordion books, posters, collages and installations. There’s even a zoetrope by Susan Lowdermilk that you can spin, sending her prints of rocking horses into motion… I suspect that print artists will get a lot out of this show… I love that the act of printing is emphasized in the museum’s object labels. Each one states where the print was made, at the artist’s studio, for example, or at one of the excellent art-printing shops in Oregon and Washington.” page 8 Tacoma Art Museum Mounts a Handsome Show of Prints, by Gayle Clemans, The Seattle Times, July 18, 2014. Above, top to bottom: Visitors interacting with Tacoma artist Chandler O’Leary during a Free Third Thursday. O’Leary is discussing her piece Local Conditions (bottom) from the exhibition Ink This! Northwest in the West: Exploring our Roots May 10, 2014–January 10, 2016 “There are works that have been shown at TAM multiple times before, like Gaylen Hansen’s iconic Kernal Riding Through Snakes and William Ivey’s Blues and Whites, and that’s all right because both of those are great paintings worth viewing again and again. There are also some fabulous pieces I have never before seen, such as Mark Tobey’s Northwest Fantasy, Rick Bartow’s Old Time Picture and Sherry Markovitz’s mind-boggling sculpture of a mounted moose head, Eternal Vigilance… Markovitz’s moose head is made of papier-mache and encrusted with beads, oil paint, sequins, acrylic paint and fiberglass in homage to both Native American crafts and the Western tradition of mounting animal-head trophies on the wall.” Exploring our Western roots at Tacoma Art Museum: Tobey, Bartow and Markovitz and a few other Pleasant Surprises Make this Show, by Alec Clayton, Weekly Volcano/Northwest Military.com, May 27, 2014. page 9 Protective Ornament: Contemporary Amulets to Armor October 18, 2014–February 1, 2015 “Protective Ornament: Contemporary Amulets to Armor at Tacoma Art Museum examines various aspects about how we defend ourselves from the violent world via fresh artistic takes on armor and weaponry. It’s not simply about how we shield ourselves physically, but also how we shield ourselves from ideas (for better or for worse)…The strength of the Protective Ornament lies in the way that each piece assumes its own identity. They’re rich in layers of meaning and address a variety of issues while still fitting the general thematic push. It’s fortified art for an assailable time.” The Razor Sharp Protective Ornament at Tacoma Art Museum, by Seth Sommerfeld, Seattle Met magazine, January 13, 2015. Mary Lucier: The Plains of Sweet Regret November 22, 2014–February 8, 2015 “Mary Lucier’s video installation The Plains of Sweet Regret in the upper Weyerhaeuser gallery, Marie Watt’s Blanket Stories app and a handful of local Native Americans responses in the Haub wing itself combine to offer three different ways to look at —and think about—our perceptions of the West.” With a Video, an App, and Wall Texts, Tacoma Art Museum Has Begun Expanding the Stereotypical Western Art Vision of its new Haub Family Galleries, by Rosemary Ponnekanti, The News Tribune, December 19, 2014. page 10 Gallery view, The Plains of Sweet Regret. Art of the American West: The Haub Family Collection November 15, 2014–October 18, 2015 “Tacoma’s Museum District has opened another attraction that further cements it as one of the top visual arts destinations in Pacific Northwest. With the November 15 debut of the Haub Family Collection, Tacoma Art Museum takes its place among the top exhibitors of the Western genre of American art: from the early explorations of the western half of the North American continent, to the modern visually stunning art the West continues to inspire.” Tacoma Art Museum Adds Wing Housing Haub Family Collection, Region’s Largest Western Art Exhibit, by Terry Richard, The Oregonian/OregonLive, November 25, 2014. Above: Opening of the Haub Family Galleries. page 11 Eloquent Objects: Georgia O’Keeffe and Still Life Art in New Mexico March 1–June 7, 2015 “Tacoma Art Museum unveiled an important and fascinating show that examines works by O’Keeffe and some of the artists that were working in New Mexico as her contemporaries…The show examines how these artists were able to reveal the essential elements of the Southwest through the objects that they chose to arrange and depict in still-life paintings. The show brings together 22 works by O’Keeffe and 42 by her contemporaries. The result is a lush, visual experience. There is plenty to delight fans of O’Keeffe—most especially the large flower painting, Jimson Weed—one of the largest of her prolific series of paintings of flowers. For those who feel overexposed to O’Keeffe there is great richness and much to discover in the work being done by her fellow painters that shared New Mexico with O’Keeffe.” page 12 Tacoma Art Museum Brings the Southwest to the Northwest with New Show Starring Georgia O’Keeffe, by Dave R. Davison, Tacoma Weekly, March 11, 2015. Above: Gallery installation view at Members’ Opening Celebration. The Still-Life Tradition in the Northwest March 1–June 7, 2015 “Don’t miss Still Life in the Northwest, a small but thoughtful show in the next gallery. Assembled by [TAM Curator of Collections and Special Exhibitions, Margaret] Bullock out of the museum’s own collections, it shows both what was going on in the Northwest while the Southwest artists were painting cow skulls and cacti, as well as the broader tradition of Northwest still life, from Morris Graves’ thickly tranquil autumn leaves to Ned Behnke’s exuberantly flashy lilies, a 1980s nod to O’Keeffe.” O’Keeffe and Contemporaries fill Tacoma Art Museum with Flowers, Bones, and Visions, by Rosemary Ponnekanti, The News Tribune, March 6, 2015. Below left to right: Gallery still-life activity board and visitors to Partners in Northwest Art. Partners in Northwest Art: Selections from the Aloha Club Collection at Tacoma Art Museum June 27–September 13, 2015 “The Aloha Club’s roots go back to 1892 when it began as a women’s study club. Now this Tacoma institution promotes the development of Northwest artists and supports and encourages participation in the city’s cultural life. In 1971, the club donated its collection of important works by Northwest artists to Tacoma Art Museum in order to give more people the opportunity to see the pieces the club began to acquire in 1948. This exhibit includes 21 pieces from the collection. Why not end summer and celebrate September’s arrival by visiting Tacoma Art Museum before these outstanding exhibits leave?” Two must-see exhibits ending in two weeks at Tacoma Art Museum, By Candace Brown, Good Life Northwest, September 1, 2015. page 13 Roger Shimomura—An American Knockoff June 20–September 13, 2015 “Shimomura’s family never talked about their camp experiences after they left Minidoka, but the Seattle native believes it colored the rest of their lives. Always, he explains, they carried that experience of being behind barbed wire, being considered ‘less’ than other American citizens…. Despite recent attention to racism in this country, Shimomura believes prejudice can exist on subliminal levels even in Seattle’s most overt liberals. He’ll keep making art that addresses it. He doesn’t expect to change people’s opinions. ‘But if you can plant something in their mind to take with them, you’ve really done something,’ he says.” page 14 Roger Shimomura Smashes Stereotypes with Art, radio interview with Marcie Sillman, KUOW’s The Record, August 20, 2015. Private Events at TAM page 15 Treasurer's Report As Treasurer of Tacoma Art Museum, I am pleased to share with you some highlights from the financial picture of the museum for fiscal year 2015 (FY15), beginning July 1, 2014 and ending June 30, 2015. The independent audit firm of Brantley, Janson, Yost & Ellison issued another unqualified or “clean” audit report of the museum’s financial operations. This is an important marker of the financial controls in place and should give comfort to all members and donors. During FY15, we also celebrated the museum expansion, and can proudly state that this major building project was completed on time and on budget. The activity reflected in this annual report shows the total operating income of $5,063,185. The increase in expenses this year is in part due to the depreciation of expenses of $1 million, and the completion of the Haub Family Galleries. The capitalization of the new building asset expended an additional one-time expense of $1.2 million, offset by previously received campaign gifts that were recorded in 2013. For FY15, TAM once again recorded a balanced operating budget. My thanks go to the diligence of management and staff in producing these strong financial results. Credit also goes to the dedicated members of the Finance Committee and Board of Trustees for their financial oversight and guidance. We remain grateful to the ongoing and generous support of our visitors, members and donors who believe in the mission of connecting people through art. As TAM enters its 80th year, we continue to build upon our strong financial foundation and see a bright outlook for our future. Bill Driscoll Treasurer, Board of Trustees page 16 THANK YOU!
