SCA’s new website
The Center has a new website with a clean, sophisticated look. Zoom
through pages of classes, events, concerts, films, exhibitions – and a
calendar of events. Board Members Janet Moore and Alex Douglas
developed the specifications, and chose Debbie Gray (deborahgraydesign.com) to create the site, incorporating a new text logo by Marcus
Badgley (badgleydesign.com). The site is a strong cornerstone to amplify publicity for our activities and events. A technology grant from
the City helped to fund the site, and now the world is only one click
away from everything new and exciting at the Center for the Arts.

Here is a taste of a few of the films to be featured at this year. The full program will be released in February.
STEAM OF LIFE: It’s neither a therapist’s office nor a lover’s bed where
Finnish men’s deepest feelings about life, love and family are brought to the
surface—it’s the sauna. Become a fly on the wall as these men bare their
souls and their bodies, talking to other men in the sanctuary of the country’s
ubiquitous saunas. Beautifully made and intensely personal, these stories
ring a profoundly universal tone. Nominated by The International Documentary Association for Best Documentary of 2010.
Discover art. Discover the artists.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
NEWS
T
hanks to everyone who came to our Auction
and made it a fun evening and a financial success. We appreciate your support. In December, our Members Show and The Store in the
gallery, are great places to do some holiday
shopping to support local artists, and the Center.
Soon, you’ll be receiving our year end request for tax deductible donations. SCA has been presented with an extraordinary opportunity to raise much-needed funds. Dan
Smith & Joan Marler of the French Garden Restaurant
will match all gifts and pledges, dollar for dollar, up to
$20,000, received or promised by December 31, 2010.
Your gift or pledge, of any amount, will count towards our
goal. There are many causes that merit your support, but
we hope you keep SCA at the top of your gift list this year.
We really need your support to stave off another year of
economic recession, which affects us all.

Weekend Painting
Workshops
Instructor: Janet Moore
Intensive 2-day workshops designed
to get students painting immediately.
Offered in a fun, non-judgmental atmosphere, students learn the fundamentals of painting technique plus experiment with new materials and approaches including Janet’s unique
limited, transparent palette. Workshops are designed for acrylic paints,

low VOC materials.
Workshop #1: Getting
Started: Methods and

prepare your painting surface, begin a
painting, mix pigments, develop form
and dimension using value, and the
use of techniques such as glazing.
Appropriate for inexperienced and beginning painters.
Color theory, mixing color from a limited palette, design and composition for
landscape and still-life, intermediate
techniques for brush and knife painting are taught through hands-on exercises. Also included is an introduction
to the “functional critique”. Appropriate for painters at all levels.

Workshop #3:
Exploring a
Minimalist Approach
This class suggests an approach to
developing a personal style in painting,
specifically one that is slightly or fully
abstracted. Creating a simplified
image requires interpretation and
translation; often this is more challenging then simply painting what you
see. This session explores design,
composition, color and imaging techniques that will help inspire your personal style. Appropriate for experienced painters at all levels.

A Month of Mozart
Widely regarded as a musical genius, Mozart was successful in writing various genres of music. Even in opera, he
created magical scores for a wide variety of styles including
comic opera, serious opera, song-play, and “jocular
drama.” Through film, discussion, video clips
and live performance learn how Mozart
brought depth and richness to gorgeous music. This month of stunning music, interesting insights
and delightful stories is not to

“The most significant
film about Mozart to be
produced in several decades” reads one of the reviews of the DVD. World leading orchestras and musicians

The story follows all of Mozart’s life,
including the journeys he made to listen to
and absorb the techniques he later incorporated
and made into music that is uniquely Mozart. Those who
know nothing about Mozart will enjoy, and those who know
more will find much of interest.

Mozart - vocal &
instrumental performances
Our final concert in the series will present several vocalists
and a piano quartet. Music for the quartet was written when
Mozart was 30. He really wanted to do another opera, but
there was no commission, so instead he wrote wonderful
symphonies and ensemble pieces such as for the quartet.
Those skills stood him in good stead when he wrote The Marriage of Figaro with its many duets & trios. Check SCA’s
website for details.

Few small towns can boast an art center the caliber of Sebastopol Center for the
Arts or an independent bookstore with the longevity and reputation of Copperfield’s Books. Our town has both! Next summer these two venerable institutions
join forces in presenting Bibliophoria~Celebrate Book Arts! for everyone who loves
books, reads them, creates them or aspires to do so. A variety of events are planned,
including Coppefield’s 30th Anniversary Party June 3, Bibliophoria II: Art of the
Book ~ National Juried Exhibition with an opening reception June 16, a Book
Camp for youth, author talks, book arts workshops, and Readers Theater.
Activities will center in the downtown area, extending south to Iota Letterpress
and north to O’Reilly Media. Bibliophoria explores how the book in all its forms—
traditional and new—shapes our relationship to words and images, thinking and
imagining, ideas and culture. A map will guide visitors to partake in all the fun and
savor of a cultural celebration. Check the www.sebarts.org for updates.

FILM FESTIVAL PREVIEWS
GOODNIGHT NOBODY: In one of
the most beautifully photographed documentaries we have ever shown, Goodnight Nobody takes us on a sleepless trip
through one night in the unusual lives of
four insomniacs. Guided through a
night filled with darkness, silence, solitude, and fear, you also see that their
night is alive with beauty, fantasies and
hope. They are night
people, constantly
floating between a realistic dream world
and a dream-like reality.

UNBOUND: The Story of
the Freedom Writers
– Illuminating the
power of the written
word, Voices Unbound
recounts the journey
of 150 at-risk youths from Long Beach
California, who, with the help of their
teacher, learned to rise above their circumstances through the power of writing their stories. Produced over a 10year period and told entirely in cinemaverité, the film unfolds through
interviews with the students themselves, as well as through the voices of
students today who are reading their
book.

MY SO-CALLED ENEMY: This award
winning film follows six participants
(Jewish, Muslim, and Christian) from a
peace leadership program where they
meet and get to know their “enemies” as
human beings, then back to their home
in the Middle East. Over the next seven
years, the director created a film about
the human consequences of all conflicts
as seen through the eyes of
six young women who are
thoughtful, intelligent and
articulate beyond their
years.
MEN WHO SWIM:
When a British man living
in Sweden finds himself on
the brink of turning 40, he
combats his mid-life crisis
in the usual way: by joining a men’s synchronized
swimming team. Made up
of middle-aged men from all walks of
life, the team begins as a hobby to escape
the daily grind. Soon, however, it inspires an unexpected level of commitment and brotherhood as they plan to
compete at the unofficial All Male World
Championship in Milan. Men Who Swim
takes a warm and hilarious look at one
man’s search for meaning – in a swimming pool. Audience Award Winner Silverdocs 2010.
