The level of protection required from a safe will
depend on the type of media you want to store.
For example, paper chars at 350o F (177o C), so
lower protection is required than if you are storing
disks, which melt at 125 0 F (52 o C). So before
deciding on a safe, it is important to think about the
media you wish to store.

What type of safe do I need?
There are three basic types of safe available, each designed specifically to protect
against a certain type of threat. The three types are as follows:
Data Media
o Range in performance from one to two hours fire protection
o Available in a range of sizes to allow protection for varying amounts of
media.
o Fully customisable with internal fitments to meet all requirements
Document
o Range in performance from 30 minutes to two hours fire protection
o Filing cabinets, free standing or small units
o Fully customisable with internal fitments to meet all requirements
o Available with key lock or electronic lock options
Cash Safes
o Available in cash ratings up to £10,000
o Varying size options available across the range
o Fire protection of up to 60 minutes for enhanced security.
o Available in both key and electronic lock format.
Cash Rating Explained
The Eurograde is the industry standard cash rating given
to a safe. Generally, the rule of thumb is to multiply the
cash rating by a factor of 5 for commercial use, any by 10
for domestic use. For example, a safe with a £10,000
cash rating installed in a domestic location would have a
nominal valuable rating of £100,000.

from shelves to lockable compartments, allowing
for a mixture of media to be stored.
The Kardex Citadel range has been tested and approved to EN 1047-1 and certified by ECB-S
to the fire resistance of S 120DIS, giving it 2 hours fire protection. The range is also tested in
accordance with the European norm EN 14450 and certified by ECB-S classes S1 and S2.
The Citadel cabinet series is manufactured in accordance with the ISO 9001 quality
management system and the ISO 14000 environmental management system.

The Kardex Document Safes range offers a variety of sizes with a wide selection of
interior fittings and accessories. So no matter what size or shape your essential
documents are, they are sure to fit. Lockable drawers or internal compartments
including a data media insert which provides added protection for delicate computer
data are also available, to enhance customisation and flexibility.
Kardex Document Safes have been tested and certified by SP (Swedish National
Testing and Research Institute) according to the Scandinavian norm NT Fire 017 to
class 60 Paper and 120 Paper. As mentioned previously, they will therefore withstand
a fire for 1 or 2 hours.
All cabinets are also manufactured in accordance with the ISO 9001 quality
management system and the ISO 14001 environmental management system.
As standard, Kardex Document Safes are fitted with a high security key lock however
other lock options are readily available including combination locks, electronic locks
or a combination of locks.
All cabinets in this range are supplied empty, giving you complete customisation
control from the wide range of interior fittings available.

Kardex Safe Files – more than just a filing cabinet
Designed to look and work exactly like ordinary filing
cabinets, Kardex Safe Files provide first class protection for
your most important documents. Available in two, three and
four drawer sizes, these cabinets fit perfectly into your office
environment.
This new range of fire cabinets has been extensively tested
and holds a fire rating of up to 120 minutes. In addition to
this, each drawer is individually protected, meaning that
even if one is open, the contents of the closed drawer will
remain protected.
All safe files are fitted with key lock as standard and all
drawers include provision for hanging suspended files.

For optimal storage possibilities, Kardex Safe Files include
3 dividers per drawer as standard. Additionally, each
drawer has slots on the base to allow for flexible placement
of the dividers.
Each
separate
drawer
houses
additional
suspension bars as standard, which can be easily
mounted to reduce the width to suit A4 files.
The Kardex Safe File cabinets are tested and
certified by SP (Swedish National Testing and
Research Institute) in accordance with most
common and well-established norm in Europe, NT
Fire 017, in fire class 120 paper, offering a 2 hour
fire protection.
Kardex Safe Files are also manufactured in accordance with the ISO 9001 quality management
system and ISO 14001 environmental management system.
The full height sides of the drawers make them extremely stable when fully loaded and the steellined inner body protects the contents from insulation dust. High quality locking possibilities are
available and cabinets can be equipped with a central key lock as single locking or as dual
central locking.

environment
Designed to save space and fit comfortably into the office
environment, Kardex Lateral Safe Files provide a stylish
alternative to conventional fire safes, complementing
systems furniture.
Available in two, three and four drawer, the Lateral Safe
File range carries a fire proof rating of 60 minutes and has
been tested to the ECB-S S60P labels.

To put the fire rating into perspective, the
internal temperature of the cabinets would not
exceed 350o F for at least one hour when
exposed to external temperatures of over
17000 C.
The robust design of the Kardex Lateral File
Safes also means that if dropped, fully loaded,
from 30 feet, the contents would still remain
safe.

Cash Safes
The Kardex Vault is certified and tested by the latest European Testing
Authorities to European Standards EN 1143-1 and manufactured to ISO
9002 accredited quality assured process.
All size safes in the Vault range are secured by a single double bitted
keylock as standard conforming to EN1143-1. A wide range of mechanical
electronic and time delay locks can be fitted on special request.
Ultimate security is provided from the 32mm moving bolts that extend from 3
sides of the door, securing it into the body. This bolt work design provides
highly effective protection against attacks and up to four anti-explosive
devices protect the bolt work.

Independent Testing – to the highest international
Standards
All Kardex safes have been tested by independent experts in conditions which exceed
what is likely to be faced in even the severest of fires.
Test 1:
A: 1 hour
B: 2 hour
Swedish National Testing and Research Institute – NT Fire 017
The safe is furnace heated to over 1000°C for over 1 hour
(Test 1A), or 2 hours (Test 2B). The burners are extinguished
and the red-hot safe is left for several more hours. During this
time the safe reaches its maximum temperature before starting
to cool naturally. During the test the internal temperature must
not rise by more than 150°C. After the test the safe is
examined by experts to ensure the contents are totally
unaffected.

EN 1143-1 Burglary Resistance
You can be rest assured that the Kardex Safes that carry the
EN 1143-1 testing mark have been subject to intensive and
demanding assessments. The Safes are exerted to different
levels of force and equipment exerted to ensure they are of the
highest standards.
Kardex Safes with this mark will have been put through
rigorous experiments including oxyacetylene torches, diamond
drilling and other aggressive equipment in order to test the
robustness of the safe.

EN 1047-1 (S60 / S120 DIS) – The
toughest test of all, for the
toughest of safes…
As Kardex Citadel Safes need to
protect vulnerable magnetic media
they are subject to more stringent
tests. They are subjected to furnace
temperatures of over 1000°C for
one hour (Test 3A), or two hours
(Test 3B), sufficient to make the unit
glow bright orange. The safe then
remains in the sealed fire chamber
for several more hours.
In a further test, the safe is heated
to
over
1000°C
and
then
immediately dropped from a height
of over 9 metres onto a layer of
rubble. After this the cabinet is
returned to the fire chamber and
exposed to a temperature of over
900°C and then left for several
more hours.
During the test programme, the
maximum recorded temperature
rise was 28°C (the permitted rise for
data media is 50°C). At no time was
the maximum humidity of 85%
exceeded – sure proof that Kardex
Citadel Safes will protect your vital
media even in the severest of fire
conditions.
But even that is not enough to
satisfy us. Kardex Citadel Safes
have been subject to explosion
tests and have even been
submerged into the River Rhine!
Every time the data media has
remained intact and undamaged.
