Why do people bully?
0 Bullies put other people down to make
themselves feel more interesting or
powerful. (Many times bullied
themselves in the past…usually dealing
with things in their own lives that are
extremely difficult to take)
Who Bullies?
Something or someone is making them feel insecure.
~Therefore they bully to make themselves feel
better.
•They could have something going on in their family.
•They might not feel like they are getting enough
attention from parents or teachers.
•They might have watched their parents or older siblings
get their way by being angry and pushy.
•Maybe they are also bullied.
•They might be spoiled by their parents.
Which teens are most likely to

Cyberbullying-
st
21
century
0 Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass,
threaten, embarrass, or target another person.
0 Online threats, rude texts, and mean tweets, posts, or
messages all count. So does posting personal
information or videos designed to hurt or embarrass
someone else.
Cyberbullying…
0 Cyberbullying also includes photos, messages,
or pages that don't get taken down, even after
the person has been asked to do so. In other
words, it's anything that gets posted online
and is deliberately intended to hurt.
0 Cyberbullying can be considered harassment
and law enforcement can get involved.
0 Remember: what you put online/phone can be
accessed!
Why Cyberbullying is
Different:
0 Cyberbullying can happen 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week, and reach someone
even when he or she is alone. It can
happen any time of the day or night. It is
harder to get away from this type of
bullying.
Why Cyberbullying is different
ctd.
0 Cyberbullying messages and images can be posted
anonymously and distributed quickly to a very wide
audience. It can be difficult and sometimes
impossible to trace the source.
0 Deleting inappropriate or harassing messages, texts,
and pictures is extremely difficult after they have
been posted or sent.
0 People who are cyberbullied are also likely to be
bullied in person.
How does bullying affect teens
that are targets of bullies?
0 Lead to feeling tense, anxious, and afraid
0 Affects concentration in school
0 Avoid school (Declining GPA)
0 Affect self-esteem and feelings of self-worth
0 Research shows years later, after bullying is
stopped adults who were bullied as teens have
higher levels of depression and low self-esteem
How does bullying affect teens
that are targets of bullies?
0 A very small number of bullied children might
retaliate through extremely violent measures.
In 12 of 15 school shooting cases in the 1990s,
the shooters had a history of being bullied.
0 Columbine High School (Littleton Colorado,
‘99)
0 Chardon, Ohio (‘12)
0 Cho, Virginia Tech
What are the long-term
consequences of bullying?
0 Teen boys are more likely to engage in antisocial
behavior (vandalism, shoplifting, truancy and drug use)
0 4 times as likely than non-bullies to be convicted of a
crime by age 24
0 Abuse alcohol and other drugs in adolescence and as
adults
0 Engage in early sexual activity
0 Be abusive toward their romantic partners, spouses, or
children as adults

else is being bullied?
