CHIPSH TS
MARCH/APRIL 2015
FROM THE DESK OF
JOAN LOVELACE
Head PGA/LPGA Professional & General Manager
Hobbit’s Glen & Fairway Hills Golf Clubs
So many exciting
things have happened
over the long history
at Hobbit’s Glen Golf
Club, but nothing is
more exciting than
the opening of our
newclubhouse!
T
he end is in sight and we’re excited to be moving into
our brand new clubhouse within weeks! The new
clubhouse will feature additional services such as club
cleaning and storage, yearly or daily locker rentals, a
turnhouse for all of your needs on the turn and an indoor
learning center. COHO Grill, the award winning restaurant and full
bar, will return to serve golfers and neighbors on a daily basis, but
its new design will also make it an excellent choice for your next
business outing or large family event. The outdoor space in the
back of the clubhouse will feature the best view in town. The patio
and firepit area will provide the perfect setting for winding down
after a round of golf or a stressful workday.
Despite the fact that the whole country has been battered by bad
weather, the golf season is finally upon us and it’s time to dust off
clubs, stretch out muscles and hit some balls. Remember it has
been awhile, so start slow with short pitches and move into the full
swing slowly.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the first event of the 2015 Golf
Season! Assuming the snow is gone, the Opening Day Tournament
will be held on Saturday, March 28. Shotgun is at 9:30am. The
format is an 18-hole scramble. Prizes will be awarded for first and
second gross and net and closest to the pin. The entry fee is $30
(cash) per person and includes a continental breakfast, prizes and
carts. For more information or to register, please call 410-730-5980.
Tired of lugging your clubs in and out of your trunk? We are now
offering yearly club storage from April 2015 through March 2016 for
$125 for the year. This is a new service we are offering, and we
hope that it will make your golf experience at Hobbit’s Glen even
more enjoyable!
Finally, don’t forget to sign-up for your handicap fee for 2015. Due
to increased prices from the Maryland State Golf Association, we will
be charging $30 for a single handicap fee. On April 1, the prices will
increase to $23 for Annual Members and $40 for two-member family
or ladies who need nine and 18-hole. The Ace Card is also back and
is $130 this year which includes a $5 discount on your cart fee or
green fee, a 24 small bucket range key and your 2015 handicap fee.
Again, I want to thank everyone for your patience and
understanding during the construction of the new clubhouse. I can’t
wait to celebrate the opening of the new clubhouse with all of you!

COURSE
CONDITIONS
UPDATE
Nick Mooneyhan,
Director of Golf Course Maintenance
Hobbit’s Glen & Fairway Hills Golf Clubs
I
t’s been a long, cold winter. In fact 57 out of 90 days have been below the average
temperature, and 18 days where the temperature never rose above freezing. The
good news is it’s finally March and the countdown to spring has begun! This has
been a difficult winter to complete projects on the courses. All course accessories,
such as tee markers, trash cans and benches have been refurbished. As weather
permitted, tree pruning and the removal of dead trees was also accomplished. Tree
pruning, drainage installation and bunker bank repair will continue into early spring.
You may not be aware, that the golf maintenance team is also responsible for the
snow removal and salt treatments of the Sport and Fitness facilities including Columbia
Athletic Club, Columbia Gym, Supreme Sports Club, Columbia SportsPark, Columbia
Swim Center and Columbia Ice Rink as well as the golf course lots.
Good grass growing and golfing weather is sure to arrive soon enough. See you
on the course soon!
The First Tee of Howard County is entering its 15th year of programming!
Fairway Hills Golf Club is the home for The First Tee with Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club,
Turf Valley Country Club, Waverly Woods Golf Club and Timbers at Troy being

First Tee event will be on Wednesday, March 25 and the Annual Golf Tournament at

Jeff Gasiorowski, President
The Fairway Hills Senior Golf Association (FHSGA)
eagerly awaits the start of our 2015 season.
We are planning our kick-off meeting on Tuesday, March 31 at 10am in the
First Tee Room. We hope to see our returning members as well as newcomers to
the league. Last year was a great year and this year promises to be as equally
exciting and enjoyable for all. In 2014, we peaked at 99 members. We are hopeful
that this year we can attain triple digit membership!
The new year brings a new group of officers. Frank Frodyma will serve as our
new Secretary. John Nelka will handle our Treasury and Dave Hand will act as our
Vice-President. Presidential duties are assigned to me, Jeff Gasiorowski. We’re
looking forward to our opening day on Tuesday, April 7 where we will open the
season with a four-man string scramble. The 2015 event schedules for FHSGA
and MISGA, as well as additional league information, plus instructions on how
to become a league member, can be found by visiting our website at fhsga.net.
March 19 at 7pm. If you are a
woman with a 9-hole handicap of 30
or less or are consistently able to
shoot below 66 for 9 holes, we hope
that you will consider joining us.
We play every Thursday from
March 26 through the beginning
of October. We alternate play
between Hobbit’s Glen and
Fairway Hills Golf Clubs. Tee
times can be booked between
4:15-5:30pm through SignUp
Genius. We run fun weekly
competitions and require that a
handicap be established for league
play. Points are earned for play
throughout the year. Many of us meet
after golf for camaraderie and dinner.

HOBBIT’S GLEN
MEN’S SENIOR LEAGUE
Dwight Johnson, President
he Hobbit’s Glen Men’s Senior Golf Association has a great season of golf
planned for 2015! We play every Thursday morning from April through
October at Hobbit’s Glen Golf Club with a variety of formats. Most of
them are designed as enjoyable, relaxing rounds with good friends to add
to the fun of a day on the links. However, we also have several more
competitive events for the serious golfer including the Club Championships (both
medal and match play), Ryder Cup, Columbia Cup and state MISGA championships
in both individual and two-man competitions. Additionally, we have 25 away dates
during which we play several of the finest golf courses in Maryland at very
reasonable rates. Many of these are at private clubs which we would not be able to
play were it not for MISGA. Participation in all events is voluntary.
We kick off our season Thursday, April 2 at 9am at Hobbit's Glen. Our Spring
Annual Meeting will be held on the following Thursday, April 9 at 9am in our brand
new Hobbit’s Glen clubhouse. After a quick tour of the facility, we will welcome
newcomers and review a few of our policies, then hit the course at 10am for a
relaxing day of golf. To learn more about us, please visit our website at
hgsga.wordpress.com.
