The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology recently opened Huichol Art and Culture: Balancing the World, a beautiful display of decorative and colorful yarn paintings, textiles, and votive arts of the Huichol people of western Mexico. Downtown, the New Mexico Museum of Art debuted Sole Mates: Cowboy Boots and Art, a unique exploration of images of the West, including paintings, drawings, advertisements, sculpture, and amazing cowboy boots! Across the way at the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors is Wild at Heart: Ernest Thompson Seton, an intriguing look into the life of the noted British conservationist, naturalist, artist, and cofounder of the Boy Scouts of America. Rounding out the season is a stunning exhibit, Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda, opening at the Museum of International Folk Art on Sunday, June 6. There is even more to come in the summer and fall. Among the highlights is the new Center for New Mexico Archaeology, whose opening will be a proud moment for New Mexico. The center will house the treasures of our state’s past in the unparalleled archaeological collections of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology. The Office of Archaeological Studies will also relocate there, bringing its expert staff, laboratories, and award-winning education programs together under the same roof. See our cover story on page 1. As members, you have helped support these marvelous exhibits, the Office of Archaeological Studies, and the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology. Thank you! T Photo: Cheron Bayna 2 Tom Aageson, Executive Director P.S. The Museum of New Mexico Foundation now has members in all fifty states and in Washington, DC. Welcome to everyone who supports New Mexico's cultural treasures. 5 8 Our Mission The mission of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation is to support the Museum of New Mexico’s efforts to preserve and enhance New Mexico’s unique cultural resources through fundraising, collaboration, advocacy, and other essential support services. OUR VISION We envision a Museum of New Mexico that will have ever-increasing resources to pursue its mission and create engaging cultural experiences for all New Mexico residents and visitors. member news staff Mariann Minana-Lovato, Senior Membership Officer, Editor/Writer Carmella Padilla, Copy Editor Autumn DeHosse, Designer For additional information about the Museum of Cover: Interior view of the new Center for New Mexico Archaeology while under construction. Courtesy: Eric Blinman The Center for New Mexico Archaeology Supporting a Dream for Tomorrow By Carmella Padilla The Office of Archaeological Studies and the ten-million-object Archaeological Research Collections will move into the new Center for New Mexico Archaeology, this summer and fall. I n 1992, archaeologist Eric Blinman joined Tim Maxwell, then director of the Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS), on a tour of archaeology repositories throughout the Southwest. Seeing the vast scope of the region’s material culture through time was “an amazing experience,” recalls Blinman. Though still early into his OAS career, the trip clinched Blinman’s support for a longtime dream that, one day, the Museum of New Mexico could build an archaeological facility to rival the best in the Southwest. “The need for a new repository has been known forever,” Blinman says, noting early plans to expand the John Gaw Meem designed Laboratory of Anthropology. “But in state government, you have to have faith and persistence.” Maxwell, Blinman (now OAS director), and three successive directors of the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology (MIAC/LOA), which manages the state’s ten-million-object Archaeological Research Collections, never abandoned the dream. As a result, this summer, Blinman and MIAC/LOA director Shelby Tisdale will begin a mammoth move of state archaeology offices and collections into the new Center for New Mexico Archaeology. Constructed on Bureau of Land Management land on Caja del Rio Road in southwest Santa Fe County, the center is the first phase in a planned 25-acre collections, conservation, exhibitions, education, and service campus that, eventually, will support all Museum of New Mexico museums and monuments. For its part, the center is the centralized research, curation, and education facility for New Mexico’s extraordinary archaeological heritage. Its mission to bring state archaeology collections, research, and training and education programs together in one place means the public will have access to those resources like never before. Two decades and $6.64 million (from state and federal government) in the making, however, the dream is not fully complete. Combined state and federal capital outlay funds supported construction and site infrastructure. continued next page Member News 1 Courtesy: Eric Blinman Blinman’s excitement is palpable when he cites OAS plans for the center. The site will host research and training programs for student and professional archaeologists with easy access to OAS staff, labs, and analysis equipment. Longtime OAS collaborators will also benefit, including the state Historic Preservation Division and Cornerstones Community Partnerships. The National Park Service’s adobe architectural preservation lab will also be housed at the center, extending a successful program started in the 1980s. The OAS Education Outreach Program, which in 2005 was The need for a new archaeology repository has been known for lauded with the Society for years, but became incredibly clear when flood waters threatened American Archaeology’s national the collections. Since 1991, the project has served nearly 100,000 adults and children, including Native American communities statewide. Additionally, a new education center will allow OAS to offer teacher training in archaeology as an enrichment path for math, science, and the social sciences. “Everything we’re doing now, we’ll The potential is huge for the center as a whole, as well have an opportunity to do better,” Blinman says. as for the individual goals of OAS and MIAC/LOA. The A highlight for both Blinman and Tisdale is the dedicated 33,000-square-foot building is designed to reflect the needs space for ancestral Native American artifacts. of each: OAS offices and labs occupy one portion of the center, while two climate-controlled repositories provide continued next page storage for the collections and a student and researcher laboratory managed by MIAC/LOA (the museum’s art and ethnographic collections will remain on Museum Hill). Various common areas, including a loading dock and conference rooms, complete the space. Collection repositories are divided into areas for organic and inorganic materials; the former for storing such materials as baskets, yucca sandals, and textiles, the latter for pottery, stone, and historic artifacts. Thanks to help from the Conservation Department, the fragile Kuaua Mural collection from the late-fifteenth-century Kuaua Pueblo near Bernalillo will be preserved in specially designed upright units. All materials previously stored in substandard conditions will now be safe and accessible. “This archaeological collection is more than a collection of stuff; it’s the state’s cultural patrimony,” Tisdale says. “People think these collections are just stored in boxes and that nobody has an opportunity to use them. Researchers use them all the time. Now, many others will discover and The Center for New Mexico Archaeology is the first phase of a 25-acre service camlearn from them.” pus for all Museum of New Mexico museums and monuments. But such critical facility needs as built-in shelving for OAS research labs and offices, and steel cabinetry and compactor storage for MIAC/ LOA archaeological collections, still need funding. Money for laboratory analysis equipment and current collections management software is needed. And endowment funding is a top priority for the long-term sustainability of the center’s programs. “Unless we complement state and federal support with private support for facilities and programs now, it could take years to fully realize CNMA’s potential,” Blinman says. Tisdale adds more urgency, saying, “We still need funds to furnish the storage area for the Archaeological Research Collections.” In particular, she cites a pressing need for funds to move the collections from locations throughout Santa Fe into environmentally safe conditions. Courtesy: Eric Blinman A Cultural Patrimony 2 Member News Courtesy: Eric Blinman Full Circle The community will have access like never before to the states archaeological heritage through collections, research, education and training programs in the new state-of-the-art facility. Sacred and ceremonial materials constitute approximately ten percent of the collections, and MIAC works with dozens of agencies and tribes to cooperatively manage them. The center will be open to Indian religious leaders and artists who use the collections to maintain cultural beliefs and practices. Tribes have consulted with facility designers to create a private area where spiritual leaders can ritually prepare themselves to come into contact with sensitive collections. “We are caring for tribal ancestors in this building," Tisdale says, noting that the space is modeled after one at the National Museum of the American Indian. "It’s most important that we respect them." 5 Member News For Blinman, the center's archaeological focus represents a full-circle return to the reason MNM founder Edgar Lee Hewett established the institution in the first place. “Hewett felt archaeology was a great vehicle for making sense of history by teaching an understanding of the full sweep of cultures,” he says. It is also the first step toward better system-wide innovation and collaboration for all of the Museum of New Mexico. “Putting my own division’s interests aside, the most important legacy of this project is probably the 25 acres of prime expansion space for the Museum of New Mexico that comes with it,” Blinman says. “One day, the ability of this campus to absorb support functions will allow more efficient public use of all museum facilities.” As the clock ticks down on their scheduled move into the center this summer, Blinman and Tisdale hope that private donors will see that fulfilling its vision means investing in all of the museums. Blinman notes a generous bequest from long-time OAS supporter Don Pierce as an exciting start on an OAS education and research endowment fund. He also praises the Friends of Archaeology for their passion in helping to raise the center's visibility and money to help support it. The Museum of New Mexico Foundation is another fund raising partner in the project. With more friend and donor support, both Blinman and Tisdale say, New Mexico’s fragile archaeological past will impact future generations and cultures. “The new center will provide future generations with the opportunity to learn about archaeological collections preservation through hands-on experiences, research and training,” Tisdale says. Blinman adds, “My hope is that the CNMA will be the next recruiting tool for the archaeologists of tomorrow. Time, in archaeological terms, is swift, but if we build an institution to last at least a few hundred years, we’ll be in great shape.” For information about giving to the center, contact Museum of New Mexico Foundation Director of Development Kathryn Wroth at [email protected] or 505-982-6366 ext. 102. ■ Member News 3 IN OUR SHOPS A Sensational Summer Shops Highlight Exhibition-Inspired Merchandise This summer, even the most seasoned museum-goer will not be disappointed by our museums’ must-see exhibitions. The Museum of New Mexico Foundation Shops are joining the excitement with exhibitioninspired merchandise that encourages visitors to take home a part of the museum experience. Every Museum Shop purchase supports the programs of the Museum of New Mexico as well as hundreds of artists statewide and around the globe. Here’s a sampling of what’s in our shops this summer. Silver Seduction: The Art of Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda Museum of International Folk Art Sterling silver and smoky amethyst pin, by Marcial Chavez of Taxco, Mexico, is available at the Museum of International Folk Art Shop and online at worldfolkart.org. $950. Antonio Pineda was an internationally recognized Mexican modernist silversmith who was praised for a lifetime of creating bold, original designs in jewelry, hollowware, and tableware. This traveling exhibition traces the evolution of Pineda’s work from the 1930s to the 1970s and highlights his important contributions to Mexican modernism. The Museum of International Folk Art Shop features sleek, contemporary pieces of jewelry from Taxco, Mexico, where Pineda’s workshop was based. Several trunk shows also are planned throughout the summer that will showcase Mexican modernist silverwork. Sole Mates: Cowboy Boots and Art New Mexico Museum of Art This exhibition presents more than 130 examples of contemporary and historic western art, including paintings, drawings, postcards, advertisements, sculptures, video imagery, and of course, cowboy boots. These images investigate changing aspects of the West by addressing associated concepts of freedom, loneliness, gender, fashion, and youth culture. The New Mexico Museum of Art Shop is highlighting a wide selection of western-themed items, from cutout leather handbags (pictured right) and silver boot jewelry to cowgirl note cards, prints, and more. Saddle up for these great items and support the museums with every buy. This exquisite chocolate brown leather handbag features a cutout design with a vibrant turquoise peeking through. Available at the New Mexico Museum of Art Shop and at worldfolkart.org. $123. Wild at Heart: Ernest Thompson Seton New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors The story of Ernest Thompson Seton, a conservationist, author, lecturer, and the co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America is compelling yet largely forgotten. This exhibition traces how one wolf’s death led Seton to a century of wildlife conservation and touches upon Seton’s interesting Santa Fe connections, including his namesake Seton Village and Seton Castle. The Spiegelberg Shop showcases the new book Ernest Thompson Seton: The Life and Legacy of an Artist and Conservationist by exhibition curator David L. Witt, as well as such nature-themed items as prints, cards, journals, and even some plush (and not-so-wild) animal friends. Ernest Thompson Seton: The Life and Legacy of an Artist and Conservationist, by David L. Witt (Gibbs Smith) is available in hardcover at the Spiegelberg Shop and at newmexicocreates.org. $40. Huichol Art and Culture: Balancing the World Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology debuts a remarkable collection of Huichol art from the early part of the twentieth century. The Huichol, a Native American people of western Mexico, are known today for their colorful, decorative yarn paintings, but this exhibition delves deeper into the group’s unique art and cultural history. The museum’s Colleen Cloney Duncan Shop celebrates this beautiful exhibition with a variety of exciting contemporary Huichol arts, including yarn paintings, such as Turtle Water Guardians (pictured right), rattles, beaded animals, bowls, and more. Turtle Water Guardians, a stunning Huichol yarn painting by Gonzalo Hernandez Carrillo is available at the Colleen Cloney Duncan Shop and at worldfolkart.org. $160. Of the Foundation’s 7,200 total member households, this dedicated alliance contributes nearly 45 percent of total annual membership revenues, which reached $1.3 million in 2009. Combined revenues from all members make a significant contribution to the health and vitality of our cultural resources. The Circles membership is steadily growing, reaching an all-time high of 225 members this spring. No doubt, this growth is due to a variety of special events and benefits exclusive to Circles members. Photo: Wes Naman Foundation Board Chairman Bruce Larsen (left) enjoys a conversation with Carlos Garcia of the Garcia Automotive Group, who generously sponsored the four-part lecture series. Photo: Wes Naman THE CIRCLES C ircles The Left to right, new Circles members John and Jamie Lewinger and friends Cris and Ken Abbott mingle at the March 11 lecture at Los Poblanos. Lewinger said of her new membership, "With each event, lecture, and tour we've attended, we have walked away learning something new about our history, our state, and, of course, art. The Circles is really a special group." The Los Poblanos Lecture Series This spring, The Circles hosted two of four scheduled talks in the Garcia Automotive Group Los Poblanos Lecture Series at Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Cultural Center in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. More than 100 guests assembled to hear “Ancient Albuquerque” by Eric Blinman, director of the Museum of New Mexico Office of Archeological Studies, and “Jewish Identity in New Mexico” by Frances Levine, director of the New Mexico History Museum/Palace of the Governors. Guests also enjoyed delicious Los Poblanos-inspired hors d’oeuvres and fine wines. This invitation-only lecture series is exclusive to Albuquerquearea residents who support the Foundation through Circles membership. “The rich cultural experiences that the Foundation and Museum of New Mexico system provide are so valuable,” said Carlos Garcia, General Manager of Garcia Infiniti, part of the Garcia Automotive Group, who sponsored the lecture series. “Helping expose more New Mexicans to what the Foundation and museum system provide is of great importance to our family.” Two more invitation-only lectures will take place this fall though the generous support of Los Poblanos Historic Inn and Cultural Center, the Rembe family, and the Garcia Automotive Group. To learn more about The Circles or the lecture series, contact Membership Director Ann Scheflen at 505-982-6366 ext. 108 or [email protected]. 6 Member News Foundation Members and Events Make News Worthy of Mention Photo: Andrew Neighbour Great Minds Think Alike In March, more than 90 employees from the Museum of New Mexico, Department of Cultural Affairs, and Museum of New Mexico Foundation came together at the Museum Hill Café for a two-day interactive workshop, Building Our Future in a Changing World: New Trends in Museum Technology, Exhibitions and Education. Funded by a grant from the Annenberg Foundation and explore.org, the event featured three national experts and thought leaders on museums and technology: Nina Simon, Bruce Wyman and Ken Hamma (pictured left to right, below). The speakers inspired conversation and forwardthinking ideas, encouraging participants to share views, and identify museum-wide priorities for technology-related initiatives. Schneider Marian Creps ■ Maggy Ryan Legacy Society as of march 31, 2010 In 1994, Santa Fe fiber artist Maggy Ryan bequeathed a substantial charitable remainder trust to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation as a way to perpetuate her passion for the state’s museums and art education. Today, the Foundation’s Maggy Ryan Legacy Society honors Ryan’s memory, her generous investment in New Mexico’s cultural treasures, and those who have made planned gifts to the Museum of New Mexico Foundation. To join the Maggy Ryan Legacy Society or to inform us that we are in your estate plans, contact Kathryn Wroth at (505) 982-6366 ext. 102 or [email protected] or visit our website at museumfoundation.org/maggyryan.html.
