VALENCIA RESERVE MEN’S CLUB NEWSLETTER - Part 1 Volume IIi February, 2013 WWW.VRMENSCLUB.COM Special Message from the President of the Men’s Club It is truly amazing how successful our club has been. Our membership continues to grow, with eleven new members signing up at the last "meet and greet". We now have over 450 members and we will approach 500 members soon! Our shows, lead by Dennis with support from a dedicated entertainment committee, have been amazing! Our wonderful community has said the most complimentary things about us as one of the leading clubs at the Valencia Reserve! On behalf of our board of directors, I would like to thank all of you for your support. I would now like to take the time to recognize one of our board members for outstanding contributions to the Men’s Club. Phil Ruck was the last board member to be added to our group. I would like everyone to know what Phil has done to enhance our club. His official title is "Sergeant Of Arms" which generally means taking care of any problems that may arise before and during our shows and monthly breakfasts. Phil also assists Fred Paul with hospitality and assists Dave Feinberg with matters that deal with our treasury. At the last Bingo, Phil took on much more than he should have and did a remarkable job. Many of the people needed to run this event were out of town. I don't know whether we would have been successful without Phil taking on numerous responsibilities. While Dave Feinberg was away, Phil was also in charge of collecting and collating all the checks for our very successful talent show. To Phil Ruck, all I can say is thank you for everything you have done for our club and our community. Words cannot express how you have "stepped up to the plate" numerous times and have "hit home runs"! Thank you all for your support, Alan Nordon President Valencia Reserve Men's Club In This Issue Since January 1, 2013 our Men’s Club has been very active. ONLY AT VALENCIA RESERVE Men’s Club Breakfast January 6, 2013 by Marvin Zeichner Over 250 Men’s Club Members attended the January 6th breakfast meeting. Alan Nordon asked the members to stand for a moment of silence to honor the memories of three of our members: Craig Garvey, Dan Alman, and Bernie Schussel, who passed away last year. Bess Myerson at two stages in her life. Iranian Hostage Crisis The newly elected Board Members were welcomed by Alan Nordon. The Board is made up of two parts: the Executive Board consisting of Alan Nordon, President; Dennis Schussel, Executive Vice President; Lou Orenstein, Vice President of Membership; Dave Feinberg, Treasurer; and Arnie Wiener, Secretary and the Board Members at Large include: Bruce Goldstein; Goody Morrison; Sol Kleinman; Fred Paul; Phil Ruck; and Marvin Zeichner. The speaker for the morning was Shelly Strickler. Shelly was a broadcast journalist for many years at WOR in New York City. Her major theme was to trace the evolution through the years sof communications centered on broadcast journalism. She told some interesting stories of her coverage of the Bess Myerson trial in the late 1980s, her coverage of the returning Iran hostages, the coverage of a major storm in New York in the early 1990s and how she had to be creative to get the stories to her editor at WOR. In those days there were not cell phones and the pressure to get the information to the editor for a “scoop” was intense. Shelly’s talk was well received by the audience. BINGO JANUARY 20, 2013 Two Hundred and ten people enjoyed the evening playing Bingo. A total of $1,300 was given out as prizes. Men’s Club Breakfast February 3, 2013 by Marvin Zeichner At our February 3rd breakfast Larry Strickler, who appeared last year and talked about the Catskills, discussed the history of ratings for the film industry. The guidelines commonly known as the Hays Code, named after the chief censor of movies Will H. Hays, was used from from 1930 to 1968. The Hays Code was abandoned in 1968 in favor of the subsequent MPAA film rating system. The Production Code spelled out what was acceptable and what was unacceptable content for motion pictures produced for a public audience in the United States. Larry showed some old films along with his informative and humorous commentary. As always the audience was captivated by Larry Strickler. CASINO ROYALE January 26th , 2013 On the night of January 26th the clubhouse was populated with slot machines, poker, black jack, craps, wheel of fortune, and more for a super Casino Royale event. 300 Men’s Club members and their guests enjoyed playing and winning. Even those who lost had a wonderful evening. Scrumptious desserts were available during the event. At the end of the evening, a drawing was held for those fortunate to have tickets left to enter the drawing. Many different prizes were available including vouchers for Bone Fish Grill, Macy’s, and Publix. Photographs by Dennis Schussel Valencia’s Got Talent Show by Marvin Zeichner The second annual Valencia’s Got Talent Show was produced by the Men’s Club and performed on February 10, 2013. The clubhouse was filled to capacity with over 700 people from Valencia Reserve and their guests. This is the largest crowd ever to attend a Men’s Club Event at Valencia Reserve and perhaps the largest event ever held at Valencia Reserve. Sixteen different acts were presented consisting of singers, comedians, dancers, musicians. The audience was so enthusiastic that the applause was most exhilarating to the performers An interesting production feature was a video shown before the stage act with Dennis Schussel interviewing the performer and going into their background to some extent. We all appreciate the amont of effort that went into this production by the performers, stage hands, and by Dennis Schussel and Bruce Goldstein as the emcees for the evening. All participants put in hours and hours to make this a successful show. They deserve kudos from all of us. We sincerely appreciate their effort. Virtually all use ingredients found in most kitchens. Here are a few samples that should be of interest to many of us Sore Throat. Mix two teaspoons of apple cider in 6-8 oz of warm water. Take a mouthful, gargle, spit it out, then swallow a mouthful. Repeat until nothing is left. Do this every hour until your throat is better—usually within 2 to 3 hours. • Stop Bleeding. To stop a minor cut or gash from bleeding, cover the cut with cayenne pepper. The bleeding will stop quickly. • Burned Fingertips. Place your thumb on the back side of your earlobe, and the burned fingertips on the front side of the same earlobe. Press firmly. After a minute, the pain goes away. • Heartburn. As soon as burning starts, eat a handful of almonds (about 1 oz). • Insomnia. Eat 1 oz. of raw walnuts before bed. Chew thoroughly. • Sty. This folk remedy sounds ridiculous, but it works. Take a 14carat gold ring and rub it across your eyelid several times every 15 minutes or so. • GOOGLE WILEN SISTERS FOR MORE HOME REMEDIES January 24th Jessica Kitty Zodicoff granddaughter of Rhoda & Brian Glenn February 7th 9th Barry L. This poem has been floating around the Internet and was inaccurately attributed to have been written by a terminally ill young girl. However, its message is very relevant to all of us. SLOW DANCE Have you ever watched kids On a merry-go-round? Or listened to the rain Slapping on the ground? Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight? Or gazed at the sun into the fading night? You better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. Do you run through each day On the fly? When you ask how are you? Do you hear the reply? When the day is done Do you lie in your bed With the next hundred chores Running through your head? You'd better slow down Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last. Ever told your child, We'll do it tomorrow? And in your haste, Not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch, Let a good friendship die Cause you never had time To call and say,'Hi' You'd better slow down. Don't dance so fast. Time is short. The music won't last.. When you run so fast to get somewhere You miss half the fun of getting there. When you worry and hurry through your day, It is like an unopened gift thrown away. Life is not a race. Do take it slower Hear the music Before the song is over.
