STUDENICA MONASTERY
Grand Zhupan Stefan Nemanja, founder of the
Nemanjic Dynasty and independent medieval Serbian state, built the most
beautiful Serbian monastery
- Studenica. Monastery
complex lies 62 km from
Kraljevo, in the valley of
Studenica River. In time of
St Sava, Nemanja's
youngest son, Studenica
was political, cultural and
religious center and place
where Serbian literature
originated. The most beautiful example of Serbian
medieval architecture was
built between 1183 and
1196 as the main memorial of Stefan Nemanja,
where he was buried. Ever
since the 12th century, and
throughout the hardest
times for Serbia, Studenica
never stopped living, confirming its importance.
