There are upwards of a dozen studies — most not about patient populations — showing that when people are experiencing acute stress, even a few minutes
of exposure to a nature scene is helpful. There is an effect on the autonomic nervous system that enhances the healing process. Here are a few of the abstracts
and their publications.

The serenity of the redwoods is unmistakable, and that serenity is what photographer Ernesto
Rodriguez wanted to communicate in his photography for his friend Dave, lying in a Southern
California hospital bed. When Ernesto got the idea of bringing nature to Dave’s hospital room,
in November 1997, he wasn’t quite sure how he would do that, since there was no space on
the hospital walls for Ernesto’s photographic art. The Sereneview cubicle curtain was born.
Five years, many prototypes and chance connections later, in September 2002, Catalina Curtain
Company, Inc. was formed, to market the Sereneview brand of privacy cubicle curtains. The

have an escape,” recalls Maria. A resourceful manager, Maria found the resources in her
monthly discretionary budget, and every month for sixteen months, a new Sereneview

Shortly after the first Sereneview curtain was hung, the Manatee staff got it! There had
been some early resistance from the staff, before they understood the whole concept.
Maria Kendall (far left) and her happier Recovery Room Staff.
Plain curtains had served a purpose, and why would anyone want color images?
Manatee Hospital staff noticed the change with patients immediately, and there were
more smiles on everyone’s faces than before. “The overall effect of the curtains is a
change every time the curtains are pulled,” Ms. Kendall says. “It’s a reminder of what’s
outside, and it’s a distraction so the procedure isn’t so scary.
“Not only do the patients feel a sense of calm, but the staff also feels the same sense of
