THE BICYCLE JOURNEY ROLLS ON
We like to say that life is all about the journey, not the
destination. Maybe that’s why we ride bicycles. Sure, we see
sights accessible by other means (and others that aren’t!),
but the world just looks better from a bike.
Fresh air on your face. A soaring hawk, an attentive deer. The
camaraderie of your fellow cyclists. Twists and turns. Peaks
and valleys. The space to move freely. A time to breathe.
Janet Arsena

9 tours under her

more coming up this
year. On tour she
always looks terrific
both on and off the
bike. And she brings
barely any luggage!
We asked her how
she does it. Her
advice is on page 51.
The McDonalds
(Sylvia, Maeve, Don,
Donny, Mackenzie and
Clare) say going on a
bicycle tour as a family
is “kind of like being in
a carefree bubble for a
week.” Which is good
when the six of you
are typically going six
different directions. For
their story, see page 64.

When you vacation on a bicycle, you reach an extra level
of escape from the daily routine. Meanwhile, we take care
of the details, from planning and itineraries, to guides and
van support, to food and lodging. We’re picky about our
adventures, so of course we’re picky about the amenities
that make our trips awesome.
We’re always refining our U.S. excursions: the awe-inspiring
mountains of Washington, Oregon, California, and Montana; the
vibrant scenery of Utah, South Dakota, New Mexico, Arizona. This
year we’ve even added a couple of immersive hiking excursions
led by longtime guide and staff naturalist Chad Maurer. We also
pedal to the far corners, with bucket-list trips in Hawaii, Chile,
Spain, New Zealand and beyond.
As a small, family-owned company, Bicycle Adventures treats
every guest like part of the family. The friends we make here are
friends for life. The moments we share are impossible to replicate.
Until your next trip, that is.
So join us for a bicycle vacation that’s sure to become part of your
life’s story. The destinations are beautiful, the rides even better.
We’d love to share the open road with you.
Keep smiling!

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE AND REGIONAL EXPERTISE
by Chad Maurer
For our guides, local area
knowledge comes in lots of
ways. Many have lived in and
traveled through the regions
they guide. All our guides start
out working side-by-side with
an experienced head guide
who knows the intricacies of
the itinerary. From there, they
add to their regional expertise
in all sorts of creative ways.
JEFF BARTH
sets the standard
for our guides. On
Pacific Northwest
tours, Jeff has 28
years of knowledge
to share. Where
he doesn’t have the benefit of a
lifetime of experience—as he does
in Utah, Hawaii, California, Montana,
Canada, Taiwan—Jeff often scouts
the area on his own. He’ll spend his
own vacations checking out lodging,
restaurants, and bike shops. He says
a favorite way to scout is “riding my
bike around and talking to locals.” If
you were in Taiwan last year, you may
have seen Jeff scouting local rides on
a single speed Hello Kitty cruiser!
MICHELLE
LONGSTRETH not
only excels in the
Pacific NW—she’s
now a local—you
don’t want to tour
New Zealand with anyone else! Born
in New Zealand, she honed her travel
skills by visiting 31 countries before
age 23. On San Juan tours, Michelle
emphasizes fresh offerings, bringing
in pastries from local bakers and
relishing in the farm-fresh meat and
produce the area has to offer. And
no one has more familiarity with New
Zealand. She can even translate New
Zealandese. Examples: When a local
compliments you on your “jersey”
(sweater), directs you to the “dunny”
(bathroom), or says it’s time for a
“smoko” (rest or break).
CHAD MAURER has
been working for
Bicycle Adventures
for almost a quartercentury. Aside from
being a Northwest
resident for more than 40 years,
he recently went back to school to
learn natural history in order to guide
our new naturalist-led Hiking Tours.
These tours require a different sort of
expertise, as well as a different type
of scouting. Aside from
knowing regional history, Chad
knows about everything from lichens,
fungus, herbs, shrubs and trees to
insects, fish, birds, and mammals
(oh my!). Chad’s favorite volunteer
activity is setting remote cameras
to monitor wolverine and wolf
activity in the Cascades. “It’s a fun
challenge,” he says.
LORI SANWALD is
a “local” in two of
our most popular
tour destinations:
the Pacific
Northwest, where
she spends summers; and Hawaii,
where she enjoys winters. On the
Big Island, she collects local lore
by listening to the stories of elderly
Hawaiians who remember Kona
from “back when Ali’i Drive was a
dirt road with one surf shack and
a handful of grass huts.” Lori also
loves paragliding. Whenever she gets
a chance, she takes to the skies to
scout tours from the air. So the next
time you see a paraglider overhead,
it just might be Lori scouting a tour!
A LONG DAY AHEAD,
and you’re going to love it.
You knew when you planned the ride it would be a long day, a route stacked
with long climbs and twisting descents. But when you grab your Avant before
rolling out, you know it’s going to be good. No other machine could better help
you endure and enjoy the thrilling hours ahead.

PHOTO TIPS FOR
THE OPEN ROAD
Photos are the perfect way to
recall a glorious bicycle tour. To
bring home images as incredible
as the ones in your memory, try
following a few simple steps.
PACK YOUR PIXELS. Today’s
phone cameras are amazing, but
bring along your best camera,
too. You can keep it handy in
the support van, and you’ll have
it available for the times you’re
not on the bike. For pixel power
that can be carried anywhere,
I love the mirrorless Micro 4/3
cameras; they deliver DSLR quality
and interchangeable lenses with
minimal weight and bulk. A Bicycle
Adventures handlebar bag provides
instant access to your camera.
PLAY NOW, EDIT LATER. I love
eye candy and documentary shots
(“Here I am on the ferry to the
Gulf Islands!”) but also cluttered
images, multiple reflections, long
shadows, candid shots, quirky
signs (“Sorry, We’re Open”), even
the occasional tree seeming to
grow out of someone’s head.
Sometimes I’m not so much trying
to take a good picture as I am
gathering the raw material to coax
into a good picture later. If you
intend to do even the simplest
editing, shoot the original image
with enough margin to allow you
by Bob Cullen
to easily crop and straighten. And
if you take candid shots, check
each one carefully before sharing
or posting.
PRACTICE YO-YOING. If you are
a strong rider, getting ahead of
others by a minute or two will
let you grab shots of your fellow
cyclists, including their faces, with
a scenic backdrop like a covered
bridge or granite pinnacle. If the
sun is not cooperating, try a fill
flash to bring out faces. Then ride
like mad to catch up again.
LET THE EYES WANDER. Why
do the guides always seem to
spot the bald eagles first? I
suspect it’s not because they
know exactly where to look, but
because they are in the habit of
looking. On the Badlands tour, my
wandering eye noticed a Marilyn
Monroe mannequin hiding in a
phone booth behind a realtor’s
office—very easy to miss, but a fun
surprise that produced a keeper.
GO ON A MINI PHOTO SAFARI.
Photo ops can be almost too
numerous on Bicycle Adventures
trips—for example, the stunning
mountain vistas around every bend
from Banff to Jasper—but I still
enjoy taking 20-30 minute “safaris”
wholly dedicated to photography.
Places like Santa Fe and Deadwood
bristle with unusual buildings,
artworks, shop windows, and
people. To capture landscapes and
wildlife, sacrifice some sleep for an
early-morning stroll.

PACKING
LIGHT
by Janet Arsena
As a seasoned female traveler
with no patience for the baggage
claim conveyer belt, I’ve learned to
travel with only one rolling carryon suitcase for the overhead bin
and one large nylon bag that fits
nicely under the seat in front of
me. These two items have allowed
me to go on cycling trips from one
to six weeks. Light packing isn’t for
everyone, especially if you don’t
want to wash out your clothes,
but I love it.
In the carry-on suitcase, I use
packing cubes. I have a shoe cube
for my bike shoes, plus two large
cubes: one for bike clothes, the
other for “off-the-bike” clothes.
I also use two small cubes: one
for underwear, the other for
accessories to make one or two
outfits fit several occasions.
The shoe packing cube not only
works for my bike shoes, but also
my cycling socks. Since socks
don’t take up much room, I bring
enough pairs for 6 days. Bring a
large resealable bag for the dirty
socks. I include a pair of “travel
pedals” so I don’t have to take
them off my bike every time I do
50
BICYCLE ADVENTURES MAGAZINE SPRING 2016
a trip. In the shoe cube I keep
information on my seat height
and position.
In the large cube, I bring one pair
of bibs, a pair of cycling shorts
and three jerseys for any trip.
The chamois needs to be rinsed
after riding anyway, so why not
wash them, hang them up, and
use a blow dryer in the morning
if necessary. I fit leg warmers,
arm warmers, a windbreaker and
a raincoat in the large cube. The
other large cube has a pair of
leggings (I love Teeki brand), a
top or two, and a dress (usually
basic black). Everything should
wash and dry quickly. In one small
packing cube, I pack underwear
in very limited number, three
pairs at the most, plus a swimsuit. The other small cube holds
accessories: scarves, jewelry, or
a light wrap.
In the large nylon carry-on bag, I
have the following items: Kindle, a
point & shoot camera, chargers in
a small nylon bag, my bike helmet
in a soft bag but packed with my
cycling glasses, headbands, gloves.
Also included is a one-quart see-
through bag that carries all my
liquids of 3 oz. or less, including
liquid detergent. Finally, I carry a
small cross-body purse that can
fit into this nylon bag.
To save room in your luggage,
wear your heaviest shoes and
jacket on the plane. Don’t forget a
pair of flip-flops! Packing light is a
great way to stay organized and
have more vacation time. Many of
my friends have started packing
this way, and they promise to
never go back to checking (or
losing) luggage again!

mysterious sailing rocks and abandoned
mines. Spend all three nights at Furnace

5 books
Though I don’t expect
everyone to be as fanatical
about cycling books as I am,
there are some great cycling
books. I thought it would be
easy to narrow a list to five
books. Boy, was I wrong! After
lots of mulling, here’s my list:
2) The cult novel: The Rider, by Tim
Krabbé. First published in Holland,
this book has a cult following in part
because it can be read year after
year. It’s the story of a 150 kilometer
race, and even if you’re a non-cyclist
you can feel your heartbeat elevate
as the physical and emotional
aspects of the race unfold.
de France, by Paul Howard. While
Anquetil’s accomplishments on
a bike are beyond comparison,
his story off the bike is even more
unbelievable. TMZ could not make
this stuff up. He takes drugs, is
motivated by money, seduces
and marrieshis doctor’s wife, and
that’sonly the start.
1) A great sports story for everyone:
Major Taylor: The Inspiring Story of
a Black Cyclist and the Men Who
Helped Him Achieve Worldwide
Fame, by Conrad Kerber and
Terry Kerber. Major Taylor, a black,
Christian athlete, raced bikes in the
late 1800s and early 1900s. What
Major Taylor accomplished during
that era rivals that of the best black
athletes of any era – Jesse Owens,
Jackie Robinson, Cassius Clay. It’s
unfortunate Taylor’s story has been
overlooked by so many historians.
I think this is the greatest sports
story in history.
3) The literary novel: The Wheels
of Chance: A Bicycling Idyll, by
H.G. Wells, is for anyone who enjoys
1900s prose and a whimsical tale.
The story describes how bicycles
changed the social and sexual
landscape during the late 1800s,
as the book’s main character, Mr.
Hoopdriver, prepares for a bicycle
touring vacation through the
English countryside.
5) The history book: Road to
Valor: A True Story of WWII
Italy, the Nazis, and the Cyclist
Who Inspired a Nation, by Aili
McConnon and Andres McConnon.
Many books fall into the category of
paralleling cycling with world affairs,
but this story of Gino Bartali is
particularly poignant. Bartali holds
the record for the longest span
between Tour de France victories.
Nicknamed Il Vecchio (“old man”),
he lost his best of years of racing
to the war, but stayed in shape
smuggling fake identification
papers to Italian Jews.
4) Oh, those French: Sex, Lies and
Handlebar Tape: The Remarkable
Life of Jacques Anquetil, the First
Five-Times Winner of the Tour

FEATURED FAMILY THE McDONALDS
A family that rides together,
wears mustaches together.
by Jennifer Schofield
Manager, Tours & Guest Services
Don and Sylvia McDonald
are two of the nicest people
you’ll ever meet. Don, an
anesthesiologist, has a
personality that definitely won’t
put you to sleep. He cracks
jokes and coaxes smiles (and
the occasional groans) from
his family. Sylvia, who teaches
at University of Wisconsin, is
no slouch on a bike, and keeps
a warm watch on Don and the
kids. You’ll often find Don and
Sylvia cheering on the kids’
track meets. Donny (class of
2016), Clare (class of 2017), and
Maeve (class of 2018) represent
Marquette, and Mackenzie (class
of 2019) runs for Cardinal Stritch.
“When the kids were old enough
to do active trips, we talked
with friends to figure out what
to do,” says Sylvia. “People
suggested a cruise or something
with a teen program where the
kids go off and do one thing
while the parents did something
else. But we wanted to share a
common experience.”
Don chimed in, “We’ve also
looked for trips that feature
National Parks. Seeing the parks
from the seat of a bicycle is
just fantastic. Our first Bicycle
Adventures trip, in February
2014 to Death Valley, is a
perfect example. We went when
Mackenzie and Maeve were only
15 and 17, and we all had a great
time.” Sylvia added, “When you
see it in person, up close, it is so
engaging, its beauty and colors
are so diverse.”
About their 2015 Bend
Breakaway trip, Don says,
“We loved the daily variety of
activities, like the inner tubing
and hike to Smith Rock. Donny
and Clare were 21+ at the time.
They were amazed at the
64
BICYCLE ADVENTURES MAGAZINE SPRING 2016
number of microbreweries, and
got to sample beers that you
can’t get at home.” The kids
love the fun and the challenges,
and love that every day it’s
something new. In fact, Don
continues, “each trip offers so
much diversion that it’s kind of
like being in a carefree bubble
for a week.”
,, ,
it s kind
of like
being in
a carefree
bubble for
,,
a week.
The Bend trip also marked
Mackenzie’s 18th birthday. Sylvia
said, “Our guides Brad and
James took such good care of
us. They surprised us with a
birthday party and pink adhesive
mustaches for everyone. We all
wore them out to dinner!” I was
happy to have all six McDonalds
(and their running shoes) on a
recent trip to Hawaii. At dinner,
the kids often sat with other
guests, like Bob P., a Bicycle
Adventures frequent traveler,
who tells stories with tongue
firmly in cheek. (Have you heard
the one about his four burros
and a yak? It’s inspired by our
Five Boro Bike tour, of course.)
“Traveling with a group is
great because every person is
interesting and they each have a
story,” says Don. “And yet we’re
all sharing this one experience
from the seat of our bikes.”
What advice do Don and Sylvia
have for other parents? “If you
have kids who are willing to
go for a ride, to be active and
curious about the world, go for
it. Plan for some acclimation
time. And know that you will
each be well taken care of, the
kids are going to be safe, on
good equipment with guides
who are keeping an eye on
everyone without hovering. It’s
not like taking the kids fishing,
where all the lines get tangled
and 10 minutes later everyone’s
done. Bicycle Adventures has
a plan for an amazing day, and
makes it a whole lot easier than
if we were to try and do it on
our own.”
To Don, Sylvia, Donny, Clare,
Maeve and Mackenzie – we are
so happy to have you in the
Bicycle Adventures family. We’ll
all be cheering you on in the
upcoming Big East meets, pink
mustaches and all!

5 first-tour firsts
by Brad Barnard VP, Co-Owner
What’s it like to do your first Bicycle Adventures tour? Everyone has their first bike tour stories, including
‘Jack Kingen’ (not his real name) of Florida, who came away with some heartwarming and helpful - if slightly
embarrassing - discoveries. Vice President and co-owner Brad Barnard had a heart-to-heart with Jack.
GUIDES ARE LIKE BARTENDERS
You know that bartender who listens to everyone
and makes them feel like a best buddy? The
guides on my trip were like that. They were
awesome, down-to-earth people who always had
a smile and a friendly nod and were happy to
listen to my every tale. I told both guides stories I
haven’t told in years. They had that mind-reader
sense for the right mix of ride terrain for my ability
(as well as everyone else’s) and when my drink or
my energy got low they were there to give me a
refill or a snack or a suggestion. And they always
had my post-ride chocolate milk.
GO COMMANDO
And use chamois cream.
OK, so this was a little
embarrassing, but our
head guide noticed I was
wearing underwear under
my bike shorts. He pulled
me aside and told me
underwear friction can
cause all sorts of trouble.
He suggested using
chamois cream, too. Trust
me here—no undies. Any
more on this subject
would be TMI.
BIKES HAVE GEARS!
Mr. Florida here, and I’m riding up the first
BIG hill, struggling to get the pedals around.
My guide rides up and says, “How’s it going?”
I say, “Hard.” He says, “Try gearing down.”
Tried it and guess what? I started flying up
those hills. Okay, some credit goes to the
Orbea bike. And some of the hills were still
tough, but I rode them with style.

LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS
When I reflect back on
the trip, I always get a
big smile on my face. The
other guests were some
of the best people I’ve
ever met. We started as
strangers and became
great friends. Some of
us are planning our next
Bicycle Adventures tour
together! So for those of
you thinking about a bike
tour, stop thinking and
just get out there.
BEER VS. CHOCOLATE MILK
Which is better for recovery
after a hard day’s ride? Our
group had some spirited
conversation on this question.
Come to find out, there have
been studies done, and the jury
is still out on which is best for
athletic recovery. The jury can
stay out because I love both!
