WELCOME to FARM Gathering 2010!
We are thrilled to welcome so many first-timers at FARM and happy to be seeing so many familiar faces. The excitement
leading up to this year’s conference has been unlike any in FARM history resulting in attendance that has grown by over
50%. We don’t have to tell you that there is a small group of people who worked extremely hard to help bring you a FARM
Gathering beyond our wildest expectations. It’s a year of “MORE”: More firsts, more sponsors, more ads, more venues,
more performers, more DJs, more volunteers, more workshops and - we hope - MORE FUN!
New this year are the Mentor sessions we‘ve been promising, our Thursday night DJ showcase, open mics - including a
special John Lennon Birthday Tribute, mini lunchtime programs and well, a lot of you.
We’ve got a number of volunteers, thanks to our coordinator, Cindy Morgan. We’ve got ‘greeters’ and ‘enforcers’ and of
course your FARM Board members who will be on hand to assist you and we’ll all be sporting our new t-shirts so we can
be easily spotted. A special thanks to Ben Hassenger who did a terrific job organizing an excellent batch of workshops
for this year. We’ve got some popular repeats and a bunch of new and interesting topics that we’ve never had before, like
international touring and appalachian clogging!
Speaking of the BOARD, Sandy Andina is your Registrar and can be found behind the registration desk throughout
the weekend along with Lola Tyler, our Treasurer, who is attending her first FARM this year! Stephen Lee Rich, board
secretary, will be your go-to guy for all things Performance Lane.
I, Annie Capps, am your President and I can’t begin to tell you how proud I am to be part of this organization and to have
the chance to work with such amazing and talented people.
It’s very important to us that you have a wonderful, entertaining, educational, inspirational weekend filled with music
and friendship. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if there is anything at all we can do to make your time here better and
we’ll do our best for you.

Conference Info
The FARM Gathering is consolidated into one area of the conference center and all activities take place in or around the 3
banquet halls. The diagram below should help you find your way around and there are always volunteers milling about (look
for the black FARM T-shirts) who will be happy to help you.
REGISTRATION will be open beginning at 4pm on Thursday and throughout the weekend. If there is no one at the table,
a volunteer should be close by to assist you with check-in. Credentials are required to enter any of the halls for any reason.
Please wear your name tags at all times.
The DISPLAY TABLES are provided at no cost for all paid attendee to set out press kits, flyers, stickers and whatever merch
you would like to share. Please be economical with your set-ups. Small CD cases are fine but no large posters or display
boards and absolutely nothing hangs on the walls. There are substantially more in attendance this year and space will be at a
premium. We reserve the right to adjust your set-up as needed, but you should check yourself as well. As a courtesy - unless
you are a venue, festival or DJ - check with the artist before helping yourself to CDs. This is an honor system, so if you don’t
want attendees taking your CDs you may wish to carry them with you to distribute at your own discretion.
Our two-track unplugged, PERFORMANCE LANE was quite successful last year and we’ve extended it to include nearly
all registered performers. The 10 minutes slots are strictly monitored and we ask that you stick to just two songs (on rare
occasions a performer’s songs were so short that there was plenty of time for one more which will be given at the hosts
discretion). Remember that there is another performer down the hall and just because folks leave after your first song, doesn’t
mean they didn’t enjoy it. Most will want to try to catch at least one song from every performer so they’ll be racing down the
hall to catch it. That’s half the fun!
Room 3 will double as a DINING AREA and those who paid for meals will be given priority seating at the tables. Volunteers
will be checking wrist bands at the buffet line but all are welcome to hang out. Please be mindful if you’re just socializing and
you see someone wandering around with a plate full of food.

The Road to Success – Are We There Yet?
(Joel Mabus)
There are always a bunch of workshops and seminars on
how to be a better performer, a better road warrior, a better
booker, a better songwriter and so on. Sign up for some!
Learn the ropes. But unfortunately there is no destination
address for “success” that you can enter in your GPS, and
follow turn by turn to reach the end of the rainbow, the pot
of gold, the brass ring or the mansion on the hilltop. Let’s
have a frank discussion about what success means in the
arts, and what a successful career looks like in this field of
folk music. How do we know when we have arrived? Or is
the road to success an endless journey? And the ultimate
question: what we are willing to do -- or sacrifice -- to find
success? Discussion led by Joel Mabus FAI Life Member,
AFM Local 1000 Member, BMI Writer and Publisher,
Recording Academy Member, FARM Lanternbearer Award
Recipient, The Detroit Metro Music Awards recipient and
Hall of Famer, and in his 40th year of gigging.
Coffeehouse Venues (Blair Hull & others)
For there to be live music there needs to be great places
to play the music in: Listening rooms, with no french-fry
machines, cell phones ringing “Kumbaya”, doors slamming,
or even lovely chatting amongst friends. To make a great
venue - and to gather an audience to listen -- we need great
talent to come play and sing. One cannot be very good
without the other. There is no shortage of great music and
extremely talented musicians. There is, however, a shortage
of folk venues where this music can be heard. And even if
we have the venue we need audience members who will
come to hear said great music. That is why we need to work
together. To hear what we each need to make this work, as
we strive to continue the fabulous tradition we call FOLK
MUSIC. Come let us be in a conversation ....
Beginning Appalachian Clogging (Shelia Graziano)
Sheila Graziano will lead a beginning clogging workshop
and discussion of various styles of percussive dance,
introducing participants to the wonderful world of
traditional percussive stepdancing. The workshop will begin
with very basic Appalachian clogging steps, broken down
so that folks with little or no dance experience can begin
to rhythmically move their feet to old-time fiddle music.
Sheila has been performing and teaching myriad styles of
stepdancing since the 1980s. She teaches ongoing workshops
in the Ann Arbor, MI area, as well as at festivals, camps and
for private groups or individuals. Participants should wear
leather soled shoes, taps (no jingles, please!) or well worn
tennies.

Making an Excellent Recording without
Breaking the Bank
(Grey Larsen, Gary & Roberta Gordon)
Your recording represents you, so it’s important to play and
sing your best, and to make its fidelity as high as possible.
Most of us don’t have large recording budgets, so how can
we make excellent recordings without breaking the bank?
On the flip side, if you scrimp too much you can waste your
money on a mediocre recording that does you a disservice.
Whether you record in your home studio or hire a
professional studio and engineer, there are ways to make
smart money decisions without sacrificing quality. In
this workshop we will explore, among other things: Preproduction planning: figuring out what you want and
need to do before you get to the studio. There is huge
savings potential here. Choosing a studio and engineer
vs. home recording: do you know how to capture and mix
great sounds? Do you have what you need? Should you
rent some better gear? Should you hire a producer? Can
the producer also be the engineer? Mastering: the final
step that can dramatically improve your recording. What
is it and how does it work? Hear some before and after
examples.
Grey Larsen and Gary and Roberta Gordon each have
decades of studio experience on both sides of the glass.
Folk Radio Panel
This panel will provide artists, presenters, and others with
insights into the whole process of producing folk radio
programs, highlighting how artists can increase their
chances of both airplay and show appearances. Artists will
learn what folk DJ’s are looking for in promotional items
and CD packaging, and will provide tips on how best to
contact and follow up with radio hosts and stations. The
differences between public and college radio stations, as
well as internet and commercial stations, will be explored,
with salient rules and FCC concerns that govern these
stations mentioned and discussed.

Touring outside the USA presents some daunting logistical
requirements, but it can be immensely rewarding,
artistically, professionally and personally. This workshop
examines the nuts-and-bolts of touring internationally,
including getting gigs, making contacts, transportation, PA
and backline, financial realities of touring overseas, as well
as strategies for maximizing your impact before, during

Socializing in the 21st Century
How to Book Yourself
(Annie Capps & others)
No matter how hard we might try to avoid it - pining
for the ‘good ol’ days’ - its a new world of promotion
and marketing tools out there for musicians and venues.
“EPK” is an acronym even the Luddites among us have
probably heard of by now. Beyond Myspace, Facebook
and Twitter lies Sonicbids and Reverbnation. But how do
we keep up with all this and still make time for the music
we’re trying to promote? How do people make those fancy
newsletters? We’ll discuss some practical ways to demystify
and simplify the web of social networking, epks and more
by using programs such as Artistdata and the various
widgets available to connect them to each other and to your
own website. This workshop will focus on the basics of
synchronizing your social sites and help you decide which
ones, if any, are best for you.

So, how DO you get that gig? David Tamulevich is a booking
agent to some of the biggest names in folk music. He has
helped to launch the careers of Ani DiFranco, Dar Williams
and many others. Jan Krist has been a DIY artist for 30 plus
years and for the past 5+ years she has worked closely with
David at The Roots Agency. They’ll walk you through the
how, where, when and why you should book yourself, with
practical advice on how to determine what venues are right
for you, how far out you should plan, tools to help you be

Following Your Bliss
(Tom Kastle, Kitty Donohoe, Ben Hassenger)
If you really want to be in the music business for the long
haul, you need to focus on something that you truly enjoy
to be fulfilled emotionally and financially. This workshop/
seminar will touch on the “usual” marketing things we
all need to do but will focus on the looking at your music
career from an unconventional or new perspective. Tom,
Kitty, and Ben will lead a discussion that will give examples
from their own musical experiences including maritime,
traditional, and ethnic music, wine-tasting parties, teaching
with music, differing instrumentation, and will help
guide you in finding your path to musical satisfaction.

Your Listening Room Venue

We’ll have an in-depth look at the appeal and the importance
of creating small successes on the road, from the point
of view of artists, venues, and fans. We’ll also unveil the
“DinnerAndSong” mini-house concert, a program of small,
weeknight events to help artists fill gaps in their schedules
and can serve as a great alternative or stepping stone for
house concert hosts. Lastly, we’ll talk about finding ways
to help both public and private venues be more remarkable,

Featuring Feet! (Colin O’Brien)
Come to this foot percussion workshop and discover your
inner drummer! Colin O’Brien teaches the step popularized
by the late John Hartford. In three simple steps you’ll learn
how to dance rhythms with your feet while you play or
sing. Rhythm is where it’s at so practicing this step will
make you a better musician. This unique workshop is open

Music Imaging and Graphic Design (Kari Estrin)
In a perfect world, the best time to conceptualize your new
graphics, image and publicity campaign is while planning
and recording your CD. This fun and informative workshop
will demonstrate how to translate your sound into to your
visuals - on your cover and bio and press releases. We’ll
discuss how sequencing may affect your image – and then
what are the elements to create effective press releases
and bio’s. This will be a hands-on workshop – volunteer

In this interactive workshop, veteran performer and radio

Nervous but Excited (8 pm)
This Michigan-based, pleasantly aggressive folk duo is made up of an incredibly unique harmony built
upon two songwriters singing genuinely crafted stories. Their stories are accentuated with three guitars,
a mandolin, a violin, a ukulele, a harmonica, vaguely choreographed dancing and a glockenspiel. Road
warriors to the core, their endless passion has landed them on stages with folks like Ani Difranco, Iron and
Wine and Utah Phillips. Their live show will bounce you through a variety of emotions, always keeping
you guessing which is next. You might cry, you’ll definitely laugh, and they hope you’ll leave feeling that

Garrison Doles (8:20pm)
Garrison Doles is not fooling around here. If he walks out on your stage, he means to do some serious
damage. This ain’t no seventh grade clarinet recital and he didn’t come to show off what he learned at camp
last summer. He’s packing a full arsenal of original award-winning songs and stories full of humor, drama,
romance, inspiration and passion. And he delivers them with a virtuoso guitar and a voice that knows the

Johnnie Ninety-Nine (8:40pm)
Like a dishevelled railroad orphan with a six-shooter and a matching
set from Tiffany’s, Alberta girl Johnnie Ninety-Nine and her bindle of fables raft their way down both the
frigid North Saskatchewan and the mighty Mississippi on a rough-hewn wooden door stolen straight
off the hinges of the village church. Drivin’ the train of boxcars loaded heavy with evocative vocals and
grease-and-grit banjo, the Johnnie Ninety-Nine Band is Newfie James Green [Buffaloswans] on guitar, as
well as Ontario native and classically-trained-turned-fiddle player, L’il Red Campion, and Manitoba bluesman Jake Stead [The Dusty Roads Band, Juno-nominated Burnt Project 1] on bull fiddle. Four provinces.
Four perspectives. One helluva band.
Johnsburg 3 (9:00pm)
The JB3’s members include veteran Chicago musicians Bucky Halker, Don Stiernberg, and John Abbey.
Halker, a songwriter, guitarist, and well-known historian (Ph.D.), has more than a dozen CDs to his credit
and produced the acclaimed Folksongs of Illinois CD series, vols. 1-4 (U of IL Press). Don Stiernberg, a
prominent jazz and bluegrass mandolinist, was dubbed “the best mandolin player in the U.S.” by the
Chicago Reader. John Abbey, a bass instructor at the Old Town School of Folk Music, operates his own
studio and produced the Old Town School’s Folk Music Songbook CD series, 1-4. JB3 toured Europe in
2007 and recently released its debut CD, Caskets in the Cornfields, a collection of Illinois folksongs of
death and disaster!
Calle Sur (kah-yeh SOOR) (9:20pm)
Calle Sur brings to life the rich diversity of Latin American music, challenges cultural and ethnic preconceptions, and lifts spirits with the energy and beauty of its performances. From Cuban to Colombian
rhythms, from Paraguayan to Puerto Rican tunes, from Brazilian to Bolivian instruments: This charismatic
Panamanian-Colombian duo takes audiences of all ages on a warm and colorful musical journey through

Adler & Hearne (9:40pm)
From their Spring Hollow Organic Song Farm in rural East Texas, Adler
& Hearne harvest a spirited blend of original, folk-jazz blues-grass. She (Lynn Adler) is winner of the 2010
B.W. Stevenson Memorial Singer-Songwriter award. He (Lindy Hearne) was a Top 20 Performing Songwriter finalist at the 2010 Wildflower Festival. They recently completed a two-month, coast-to-coast tour in
support of their release “To The Heart,” which reached Top 20 status on FolkDJ charts worldwide. Their
musical subjects know no bounds. And as artists they’re hard to define. But as song farmers, one thing is

Trillium -- www.trilliumtheband.com -- has an eclectic repertoire ranging in style from Celtic to ragtime to

together for five years, and has performed at countless festivals, coffeehouses, libraries, pubs, house concerts, nightclubs, fundraising events, etc., in IL, IN and WI. Trillium was selected for a Performance Alley
Showcase at the 2009 International Folk Alliance Conference held in Memphis, TN. Music from their three
cds has been featured on many folk radio programs throughout the U.S. as well as internet broadcasts
throughout Canada and Europe.
Elly Wininger (8:20pm)
Lurking somewhere between “the next big thing” and “legend,” Elly Wininger is an award-winning songwriter and scintillating guitarist. With a heavy background in blues and finger picking, she has been called
‘a one-woman folk revival,’ and ‘a musical explosion.’ Her recent frenzy of musical activity in clubs, festivals, house concerts and radio appearances comes after the release of “Back Eddy Blues” (2007) and “Part
Time Paradise” (2010). Her song “Housewife from Hell” was in the top 10 on a radio station in Germany
where, Elly notes, “they must have a lot of restless women like me.”
Jay Stielstra Trio (8:40pm)
Often described as “a Michigan treasure”, Jay Stielstra has been songwriting and performing for several
decades. His sound is unmistakably his own, steeped in a childhood filled with gospel singing, a life close
to his beloved Great Lakes and northwoods, and nights singing in Irish pubs. Jay’s songs are pure Americana, with melodies that are at once new and deeply familiar and lyrics that make you wish you had said it
that way yourself. A gifted playwright, Jay has included many of his songs in his musical plays, including
the iconic North Country Opera. In 2008 Jay formed his touring group, the Jay Stielstra Trio, with husband
and wife musicians Judy Banker and John Sayler.
Claudia Nygaard (9:00pm)
Claudia Nygaard’s affable connection with an audience has led reviewers to describe her as “Will Rogers without the Rope”. She is a born storyteller with a quick wit, and a fearless emotional vulnerability.
The former Nashville music row staff songwriter understands her craft. Her songs are filled with vivid
imagery, and and an authentic point of view. A 2004 winner of the Kerrville Folk Festival “New Folk”
Songwriting Competition, last year Claudia performed on the mainstage at Kerrville, was chosen as one of
the emerging artists showcased at The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and performed on Rich Warren’s WFMT
“Folkstage” radio show, which was aired on XM’s The Village. With a new CD ready to be released in early
2011, Claudia Nygaard is on a roll for another great year.
Jan Krist & Jim Bizer (9:20pm)
Jan Krist and Jim Bizer hail from Detroit, justly famous as Motown, but home to myriad musical influences.
They met and made music together while still in their teens. On their own they have each garnered acclaim
as songwriters and performers; as a duo, Jim & Jan add another dimension to their diverse musical spectrum. Intricately layered instrumental parts and stunning vocal harmonies are just part of the magic. At the
heart is the profound respect and playful interaction Jan and Jim bring to each other’s songs, the spark of
two remarkable artists working and playing together. It’s a special kind of communion between them and
their audience that transcends what is and tries to catch a glimpse of what
may be.

Matt Watroba - 2010 Key Note Speaker
What would you call a person who is on a first name basis
with almost all of the major folk musicians in the North
American continent, who has an astounding grasp of the
folk music genre both past and present, who manages to be
a husband, father, teacher, writer, and excellent folk music
performer? The answer, of course, is Matt Watroba.
Matt was born in Detroit and raised in Plymouth, MI. He
holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern Michigan
University, majoring in English, Language & Literature
with a minor in Theatre Arts and Communication. As a
teacher Matt worked for twelve years in the Plymouth
Canton school system. His classes in the areas of English
and Journalism always focused on innovative ways of crosscurricular learning. However, Matt’s work as a high school
teacher doesn’t begin to encompass all of his work as an
educator. Today, in training circles, he is considered to be the
consummate communicator—speaking on topics essential to
professional growth and success before audiences of all sizes.
His dynamic stage presence and strategy-packed presentations
are evidence of someone who understands how to connect
with audiences to create a thoroughly worthwhile learning
experience.
Matt is a founding member of the National Folk Alliance and
a charter member of the Board of Directors for Ann Arbor’s
The Ark, both non-profit organizations formed to promote
and preserve folk music. Matt is a published writer, having
penned dozens of articles and reviews for Sing Out!, the
national magazine of American folk and roots music founded
by Pete Seeger in 1950.
His love of folk music led him to his position as the host and creator of the popular Folks Like Us program, a position he held
for over 20 years on WDET-FM In Detroit. He now produces and hosts the syndicated, Sing Out! Radio Magazine heard on
the XM Satellite network.
Matt sings and writes songs of compassion, inner strength, humor, and every day living. He was awarded “Best Overall Folk
Performer” by the Detroit Music Awards for the year 2000, and his long list of credits include the prestigious Ann Arbor Folk
Festival, the Detroit 300 Celebration, The Ark, Louisville’s Kentucky Music Weekend, The Fox Valley Festival, The Old Songs
Festival and the Owen Sound Folk Festival. He has shared the stage with some of our greatest performers, including Pete
Seeger, Tom Paxton, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Arlo Guthrie, Christine Lavin, Peter Yarrow, and Richard Thompson. He sings
songs that you will feel and remember for a long time.
