REGULARS | PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Dear Members It has been another good year for SGCC on the sporting front; our Club has emerged the winner once again for the Annual Inter-Club Swimming Meet (AIMS) for the seventh consecutive year and retained the challenge trophy. Our Youth Bowling team also did us proud by winning the Youth Inter-Club Bowling Mixed League while our golfers came in second place in the Inter-Social Club Golf Tournament. Well done, Team SGCC! On 16 October 2015, we held our 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner cum Charity Auction. We hosted 270 members and guests, including Club Patron Ms Sylvia Lim, Trustee, past Presidents, General Committee members and Sports Convenors. The occasion was made special with a video from Honorary Member, Mr David Macey, son of the Club’s founder Mr S.C. Macey, sending his well-wishes from the United Kingdom. At the Gala Dinner, $34,226.37 was raised from the auction, donations and tickets sales – thanks to sponsors, donors and generous bidders. To date, we have raised about $70,000 through all the fund-raising initiatives organised in support of the children of Arc Children’s Centre and the elderly patients of All Saints Home. The last charity initiative for the year is the Charity Movie Night on 18 December 2015, Friday evening. Every $50 donation will entitle you to 2 movie tickets to watch Star Wars Episode VII – The Force Awakens (refer to page 13 for details). Once again, on behalf of the organising committee, I thank you for your support and generosity for this meaningful fund-raising project. In September 2015, we conducted a survey among Jackpot patrons to gather ideas to improve their gaming experience. The feedback and suggestions given were reviewed and taken into account in planning for a minor renovation of the Jackpot Room which has since been completed. The carpet has been changed to a brighter colour and the drink and food counter was moved closer to the main hall to be more accessible to the patrons. So far, we have received positive feedback from the Jackpot players. We have just launched the Christmas Jackpot promotion and there will be a Jackpot Appreciation Night on 26 December 2015, Saturday. I would like to update you that we have designated 2 lanes for lap swimming every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 - 9pm on a trial basis for a period of 2 months till end-December 2015. Training aids such as swim fins will be allowed for use in one of the designated lanes. We will gather feedback during this trial period to assess the viability of this arrangement on a longer term basis. Recently, we started a SGCC Instagram account as part of efforts to better engage members. Do follow us on sgcc1955 for the latest Club’s happenings. We will be running a series of contests on Instagram - turn to page 40 to find out how you can participate. In the coming Christmas, our Chef has come up with a list of Christmas festive goodies such as Roast Turkey, Honey Baked Ham and Chocolate Truffle Log cake - do place your orders from now till 20 December 2015. We will also be offering special Christmas and New Year menus at the Garden Grill. At 2 the Crossroads Lounge, there will be a live band on Christmas and New Year’s Eve and over at Club Twenty-Two, there will be a series of Christmas-themed events throughout December. For Chinese New Year, we will be offering special set menus for your festive gatherings at the Club. Apart from the Reunion Dinner on the eve of Chinese New Year, we offer delicious Chinese New Year delicacies for take-away or eat-in such as Yu Sheng and Pen Cai from 11 January – 22 February 2016. On this occasion, I hope you will join me and the General Committee in making a contribution to the Staff Chinese New Year Ang Bao Fund, which is a long-standing tradition of the Club. Your contribution is a form of appreciation to the staff for their dedicated service to members. You will be receiving details in the mail soon. In the months ahead, we have a packed calendar of events. There will be a Chinese folklore storytelling session and Chinese New Year craft workshop for kids. We will also be having a scuba discovery session at the Club’s swimming pool and a scuba diving course and leisure diving trip to Tioman, Malaysia for adventure seekers. We will be holding our popular Chinese New Year Lion and Dragon Dance performance at the Main Lobby on the second day of the Lunar New Year which falls on 9 February 2016, Tuesday. Lastly, I would like to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please take note that certain outlets will close early on 31 December 2015, Thursday to facilitate the Countdown Party at the Kensington Ballroom. Held at Kensington Ballroom, the SGCC 60th Anniversary Gala Dinner cum Charity Auction was a lively affair, with plenty of music, performances and dancing. Our Club Patron, Ms Sylvia Lim, graced the event. Our President, Mr Randy Sng, welcomed everyone with an opening address which highlighted the key milestones of the Club and acknowledged the contributions of past Presidents, Club Trustees, General Committee members and Sports Convenors. A scrumptious 8-course Chinese dinner was then served, as a live band performance was put up by Caring Hearts, which comprises members, including past President Mr Leong Keng Thai and Honorary Secretary Mr Bob Mong and their friends. Next up was a riveting performance by talented contortionists. This was followed by a heartwarming presentation, which brought the audience down memory lane with the showcase of our milestones over the last 60 years. Honorary Member Mr David Macey, the son of the Club’s founder, Mr S.C. Macey, also prepared a special video to send us his well-wishes all the way from the United Kingdom. The President and Vice-President, Mr Kevin Kwek, led a walk-in by the General Committee, followed by the Club Trustee, past Presidents and Sports Convenors for a cake-cutting ceremony with the popping of champagne and toasting, joined by our Club Patron, Ms Sylvia Lim and one of our founding members, Ms Beatrice Gomez. Arrival of Club Patron, Ms Sylvia Lim The Organising Chairman for the Charity Project, Mr Kevin Kwek, kicked off the Charity Auction with a speech, thanking everyone for their support. In conjunction with our 60th Anniversary celebrations, the Club has organised a series of charity initiatives to help raise funds for our adopted charities – All Saints Home and Arc Children’s Centre. An example is this year’s Charity Auction, which included beautiful paintings, fancy gadgets and specially designed jewellery. A total of $19,928.04 was raised through the auction. Donation boxes were also passed around, garnering another $3,527 through cash and cheque donations, making the grand total raised an impressive $34,226.37. The night concluded on a high note with a crowd-rousing Can Can dance performance by the Dynamic Divas, consisting of resident fitness instructor Mrs Rasidah Caudal and her friends. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of this event. 4 Live band: Caring Hearts Organising Chairman for this year’s Charity Project, Mr Kevin Kwek SPECIAL The Dynamic Divas Talented contortionists Thank you to the following Sponsors! Do continue to send in your compliments as they will motivate our staff to achieve higher standards of service. Please note that the Club reserves the right to edit any compliments, where necessary, for our publications. EDITOR’S FAVOURITE I am very impressed with John (Garden Grill). He actually remembers members’ preferences and takes note of special dates. I recently asked for mustard to be served with my pork knuckles and during my next visit, he automatically served the dish with mustard. Several months ago, I had mentioned casually that I was making a reservation for my mother’s birthday dinner and when we arrived, he wished my mother a happy birthday. It is such excellent and personalised service which makes the difference. Kudos too to Liza and Peggy. It is always pleasant to be greeted by your name instead of the generic “sir”. I look forward to many more enjoyable meals at Garden Grill! – Derrick Goh FOOD & BEVERAGE I recently recommended a friend to host a birthday party for her husband at Club Twenty-Two. The food and service was fantastic. Many guests were delighted with our Club’s signature laksa and the coffee pork! The hosts and guests enjoyed themselves and gave good feedback. I would like to compliment Adrian (Senior Manager, Food & Beverage) and Yzenn (Banquet Sales) for the excellent planning, coordination and attention to detail in ensuring that the party was a success. Special thanks and compliments to Joe (Banquet Operations), Vicky (Club Twenty-Two) and the team at Club Twenty-Two for the great service. Last but not least, thank you to Derrick (Executive Chef) for ensuring that the food served was of high quality. – Tracy Peck Liza, John and Peggy Eric (Atrium Cafe) is a very good manager who is very efficient and capable. His staff members are all very polite and efficient. They are also happy. Happy staff = Happy customers! Well done, and keep up the great work! – Tee Soo Fen Eric SPORTS & RECREATION May consistently checks that members present their membership cards and that they have a towel when they enter the Gym. – Annie Tan May (From L - R) Adrian, Yzenn, Vicky, Joe and Derrick WELCOME A warm welcome to the following members who have joined us in September and October 2015: Grand Members Lin Cheng Ton Ordinary Members Cheong Zhaoming, Gary Chua Lai Choon Eng Choon Kong, Randy Jarraw Colin Tarang Lin Tze-Ing Loo Peng Siang, Roger Lim Li Hwa, Richard Ng Seng Kooi Wong Lai Ping Yam Yat Meng, Brendon Khoo Yin Long, Kenny Tam Wei Kwan, Harald FAREWELL Heng Li San Ow Peng Hang Tony Ngoi Yew Weng Term Members Attilio Marco Benard Alexandre Balace Jean-Francois Belliard Philippe Gerard Adrien Comyn Vincent Jean Francois Deschamps Andre Marc Duchene Marc De Broch D'Hotelans Louis Garry Thomas J Gillio Sandy Grimberg Jerome Henri Maurice Haehnel Renaud Kortas Wolfgang Lachaud Frederic Le Tertre Henri Lannuzel Francois-Xavier Georges Marais Laurent Mock Rufus Marchais Francois Christian Metzger Olivier Jean Postec Yves Pagano Sebastiano Federico Pujol Bernard Pretet Nicolas Pincemaille Ep Tocquet Odile Ravaut Patrick Saez Mario Luis Humberto Saunier Frederic Striffling Thomas Tommy-Martin Mathieu Trabesse Eric Vincens Guilhem Bertrand Westaby Nicholas Jonathan Tang Choong Hwee Gerhard Carlos Henry Sebastien Liger Pierre Dominique Marie Muangman Steven P Muffat ep Petit Marie Sherriff Colin 7 SPECIAL NEW MEMBERS’ GATHERING 4 October 2015 The last New Members’ Gathering of the year was a lively affair, with close to 100 attendees. Held at Club Twenty-Two, new members and their families were first greeted by President Randy Sng, who warmly welcomed them to the Club. Following that, the new members tucked into a scrumptious buffet spread while chatting with fellow members, the General Committee members and the Management team. The highlight of the event saw members taking part in fun challenges based on the ever-popular “Minute To Win It” game show. 8 REGULARS In The Spotlight This column features some of the current issues and developments in the Club which we would like to share with you. Have any feedback to relate to us? Email us at [email protected]. Using the Sauna Room The sauna room takes about 10 - 15 minutes to heat up. Members are advised not to leave the area while waiting for the sauna to be ready for use. Otherwise, staff or other members may think that there is no one using the sauna and switch off the controls to conserve energy. If the sauna is not heated after 15 minutes of waiting, kindly approach the Gym counter staff for assistance. No putting feet on tables at the Main Lobby Putting feet up on tables is inappropriate in a public area such as the Club’s Main Lobby. This affects the image of the Club, especially in the eyes of visitors. In addition, such acts may offend other members as they may find it repulsive and unsanitary. Gym Etiquette Wipe the equipment after use Bring a towel to the Gym and use it to wipe the equipment after use, to keep surfaces clean, dry and germ-free. Avoid hogging equipment Don’t leave your towel on the equipment and walk away, even for a short break. Give others a chance to use the machine when you are taking a break. Hogging of equipment is NOT allowed. No using of mobile phones and electronic devices Usage of mobile phones or electronic devices is NOT allowed in the gym. It is hard to maintain focus if your mobile phone or electronic device is constantly distracting you. You might also be disturbing other gym users or hogging the equipment. If you really need to take an important call or reply a text message, please do so outside the gym. Shower before entering the Pool We would like to remind members that for hygiene reasons, kindly take a shower before entering the pool. A shower not only helps to remove impurities such as perspiration, body oil and germs from the body, it also minimises odour which is released when impurities from the body combine with chlorine. Children’s behaviour in the Club The Hangout There has been an increase in complaints with regards to improper behavior at The Hangout such as the usage of vulgarities, bullying of younger children, public display of affection and lying down on the sofa. We have put up notices in The Hangout to remind users to be considerate to others and to uphold an acceptable standard of conduct. Swimming Pool There have been incidents of children misbehaving at the swimming pool. Children were spotted running haphazardly, playing football, plunging into the pool without looking out for other swimmers, jumping from the diving block and engaging in rough play – causing annoyance and sometimes, danger to other members. We urge members to supervise their children so that we can maintain a pleasant and safe environment for everyone. Members can approach the Security officers, staff at Coffee Deli or ask for the Duty Manager should they notice such incidents. Changing Rooms We received feedback regarding children talking loudly, using profanities and throwing things in the Changing Rooms and even into the shower or toilet cubicles when other members are using it. As the Changing Rooms are communal facilities, we encourage members to keep the environment pleasant for all. Beer Garden Umbrella Shades Fitted with Fairy Lights We have fitted the umbrella shades at the Beer Garden smoking area with fairy lights to provide better lighting for users. Jackpot Room Renovation We recently did a minor renovation to improve the environment of the Jackpot Room by changing the carpet to a brighter colour and moving the drink and food counter closer to the main hall to make it more accessible. Cigarette Butt Littering We have found cigarette butts on the floor, grass patch and in planter pots near the Beer Garden smoking area, even though there is a bin with an ashtray placed there. Be considerate and throw cigarette butts into the bin provided or ask for an ashtray from the Crossroads Lounge staff. Please help to keep the Club beautiful, clean and safe. 9 SPECIAL WINNING ENTRIES OF SGCC PHOTO-STORY CONTEST The SGCC Photo-Story Contest was organised in conjunction with our 60th Anniversary celebrations. Members contributed their favourite SGCC moments. In total, six entries were selected and each winner received $60 worth of F&B vouchers as a token of appreciation. Congratulations to the following winners of the SGCC Photo-Story Contest: From the 1980s We were featured in a magazine: Swim or sink, our happy family will always be together. – Mr David Thia From the 1990s I attended the unveiling of the Club’s logo. My colleague and friend, Mrs Tan Swee Lan, was also there. We were proud and happy that we decided to go on stage for this memorable photo. – Mrs Carolyn Chow My daughter was one of the models at a children’s fashion show during one of the Club’s functions. – Mrs Mabel Thia We had been swimming since the launch of this event till my son finished ‘A’ Levels in the mid-1990s. Given the abundance of literature on Paris, City of Love (or City of Lights), I would like to introduce you to another part of France – Lille! Lille is a beautiful city situated in the north of France near the Belgian border and famous for being the birthplace of the famed general Charles de Gaulle. It also hosts the largest flea market in all of Europe – La Braderie de Lille. I had the good fortune of chancing upon this annual event when it was mentioned during one of my French lessons the week before. It was estimated that the Braderie attracted a grand total of 2.5 million visitors and 10,000 exhibitors spread over 62 miles of street last weekend. My friend and I opted to take a high-speed train from Paris so as not to miss the start of the event. It also comes with the opportunity to view the charming countryside, a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of urban Paris. Other ways of travelling around France include the traditional trains, buses and also a recently spawned carpooling service, aptly named the “Bla Bla Car” as passengers often spend hours talking to their fellow car-poolers. And the best part? They are all affordably priced! Upon reaching the station (La Gare de Lille Flandres), it was easy to find the Braderie because that was the reason everyone else was there! We also managed to catch a glimpse of a marathon organized in conjunction with the event, in which participants either took part in a 10km or 21km run before joining in the festivities. 14 One of my favourite attractions at the Braderie was the delicious mussels that were sold at practically every restaurant in Lille during the festival. I would definitely recommend that future travellers to the festival search for a restaurant called Aux Moules (Moules means mussels in French), located at 34 Rue de Béthune. There is always an incredibly long queue outside the restaurant, but the mussels served are probably the freshest that you can find at the festival. (Tip: Visitors of the festival would do well to avoid the open-area restaurants. While they may look inviting, the mussels they serve are often stale.) It would be easier to get a table if you are in a small group as the maître d’ (head waiter) will always be on the lookout for that pair or trio that he can fit into one of the smaller tables in the restaurant! SPECIAL At Aux Moules: Enjoy a bowl of fresh mussels, fries and a salad for 13 euros Anyway, you will be hard-pressed missing the restaurant, given the eye-opening sight of a veritable mountain of mussel shells piled near its entrance. Locals say that there is always a friendly competition between restaurants to see which one of them has the highest pile of mussels. Tasty treats at the Braderie The festival also features large roving bands in wacky attire that dance and play their instruments in the streets, creating a very lively atmosphere wherever they go. Take a few moments to watch them and don’t be surprised if the people around you start to join in too! “Out-musseling” the competition The main reason why the festival attracts so many visitors is that it has something for everybody, from antique wares, old paintings, cheap clothes to food and even carnival rides at night! Even after spending almost 10 hours combing the streets, I suspect that I had not even covered half of it. I would advise people going to the next one to do their research about the streets and find out what kind of wares are offered on each one in order to make the best use of their time. It can get quite hard to wade through the throngs of people and some streets are notoriously crowded at all times of the day. Moreover, given the nature of flea markets, you may not be able to find the wares you seek once they are sold out. Drumming up enthusiasm Overall, the atmosphere was fun and lively, with the shopkeepers being friendly and perfectly willing to speak in English (if they could). Prices at the festival are generally much lower than usual, but it is still possible to bargain. Aside from shopping, the festival offers the opportunity to strike up conversations with people from all over Europe. I spoke to a British baker, a Moroccan shoe-salesman and a French lady who had lived in China for a while. In sum, do keep an open mind for a thoroughly enjoyable and interesting experience!
