Failure to follo ollow w these rules and guidelines may may be danger dangerous ous and illegal. Driving Do not use a hand-held telephone while driving a vehicle. Talking on the phone while driving is dangerous and illegal in some countries. If using a hand-held phone, park the vehicle before conversation. Remember - road safety always comes first. If you must drive and use your digital wireless phone, purchase and install the HandsFree Kit accessory. For more information on the Hands-Free Kit, refer to pg 43. Aircraft Power your phone down prior to boarding an aircraft. Aviation laws prohibit the use of mobile phones on aircraft. Using a wireless telephone in an aircraft may interfere with aircraft radio communication or navigation equipment, and disrupt the wireless telephone network. Hospital and Medical Power down your phone prior to entering hospitals, health care facilities, or when near medical equipment. Operating any radio transmitting equipment, including digital wireless phones, may interfere with RF-sensitive medical devices. Follow all posted regulations while in hospitals and health care facilities regarding the use of your phone. Emergency Calls Your phone may not operate in areas of low signal. For this reason, you should never solely rely on any mobile phone for emergency communication. Blasting and Refueling Areas Do not use your phone near a blasting site. Power your phone down when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere. Radio transmissions in such areas could cause an explosion or fire, resulting in bodily injury or even death. Obey all posted signs and instructions regarding the use of wireless phone usage. 5 Interference All mobile phones are subject to radio frequency interference that may affect the performance of your phone. Your digital wireless phone is a low power radio transmitter and receiver. Phone Servicing Only qualified service personnel are authorised to repair your digital wireless phone and equipment. Use only approved accessories and batteries. Refer to “Phone Care and Troubleshooting” section for more information. 6 Battery Installation and Charging Your phone comes with a rechargeable external lithium-polymer battery. The battery is partially charged when you buy the phone. This needs to be fully charged before first use (approximately four hours). Attaching the battery 1. Line up the connectors on the bottom of the battery with those on the back of the phone. 2. Press the top of the battery into place, until it clicks. Charging the battery 1. Check that the arrow on the charging connector is facing towards the top of the phone. 2. Connect the charging connector to the bottom of the phone. 3. Connect the charger into a standard wall outlet. 4. When the phone is turned on while charging, the battery strength icon displayed on the main LCD screen will animate. 5. When the phone is fully charged, a “Charging completed” message will appear on both the main and the sub LCD screens, the battery strength icon will stop moving, the LED will flash and a beep will sound. 6. When the phone is off during charging, the main and the sub LCD screens will display the message “Charging...Phone is Off”. Note You can make a call while charging the phone, but this will increase the amount of time required to charge the battery. Low battery indicators Once the battery runs out, the phone will automatically switch off and any function in progress will not be saved. 1. When the battery is low and only a few minutes of talk time remain, the battery sensor will let you know by blinking an empty battery icon 2. You will then hear a warning tone and a warning message will be repeated at regular intervals on the display. 7 Phone components The following shows key components of the GCP-4020 phone. When you receive a text message your phone will notify you. ➔ • To view a message, press • Scroll to the message you want to view and press • To view message options press . Scroll to the preferred option, Reply/ Forward/Erase/ Call/Save Number and press . Voice Mail When a voicemail is received, the phone will display a message on screen, the LED will flash and a tone will sound intermittently. • To hear a received “Voice Mail”, press • Press ➔ ➔ . Your phone will dial into your Voice Mail box where you will hear instructions on how to retrieve your message. Write message Paging A page sends your phone number to another phone and requests that they call you. ➔ • To send a page, press • Enter the recipient’s number. • Press ➔ to “Send”. Text • To send a text message, press • Enter text using the keypad. Press ➔ ➔ and use the scroll key to highlight one of the following modes “ABC/Word/123/Symbol” and then press • Once you have typed your message, press “OK”. , then choose whether you would like to save a draft (saving a draft allows you to use the message again, after it has been sent). • Type in the recipient’s number or press to search the address book. Search by group, name or number. Scroll to the desired name and press • Press . to “Send”. Once sent, the following message will appear “Message sent successfully. Save to Outbox?”. Press to save. 15 Drafts Previous messages composed by the user can be saved as “Drafts”. These can later be edited, resent or erased. • ➔ To view drafts, press ➔ Saved Message(s) Messages saved to your outbox are classified as either sent or unsent. Sent messages saved by the user appear in the “Sent Messages” folder, while messages that the handset has NOT sent will appear in the “Unsent Messages” folder. • To view saved messages in your outbox, press • Select “Sent” or ➔ ➔ . “Unsent” by pressing the corresponding number. Sending Calling Card Your phone allows you to create a calling cad, which you can then send to up to ten recipients at a time. Before sending a calling card, you need to store your details. • ➔ To write a calling card, press card” and press ➔ . Scroll to “Write calling “OK”. Enter your name, scroll down and enter your phone number. Finally, key in a note. Once you have finished, press • “Save”. Once you have entered your information into the calling card, you can send it. To send a calling card, press press ➔ ➔ . Enter up to ten recipients and to “Send”. Message(s) View When set to “On”, messages are shown on the sub LCD and main display when it is received. To prevent the message’s contents from being displayed on the screen, set message view to “Off”. • ➔ Press . Pressing will switch between “Off/On”. Alert Type This function allows the user to set up and modify the type of alerts used for incoming messages. The options include “Light, Alert1, Alert2, Alert3, and Vibrate”. ➔ • To access this function, press • Scroll through the options. Highlight your preference and press “Alert Type”. “Save”. Text and number input methods When entering text it is possible to use different input methods. The four types are described below. To change the input method, press see the “Input Method List” 1. Abc 16 2. Word 3. 123 4. Symbol on Abc entry mode. You will Press to insert a space, and to change the case to either capitals, sentence case or lowercase, ie WORD ➔ Word➔ word. “WORD” puts letter case to Caps Lock. All subsequent letters are capitalised. “Word” puts only the first letter in caps. “word” changes letter case to lower case. If you type in the wrong letter/character press the whole sentence or whole page, press and hold to erase it. If you want to erase . Abc Mode Abc mode allows you to enter alphanumeric characters using the multi-tap method. The multi-tap method is designed around the keypad and it has several letters associated with each key. To type a word, you would use the following multi-tap sequence on the keypad. For example, to type “Hello” press • ➔ • ➔ • ➔ ➔ • ➔ ➔ • ➔ ➔ Word Mode Word mode employs an intelligent software protocol that allows you to enter text, just as if you were on a desktop keyboard. With word mode, you only need to press the key once. Although each key contains multiple letters, word mode automatically matches your keystrokes with words in an internal database to determine the word you are typing. For example, to type “Hello” press. ➔ • ➔ ➔ ➔ Word mode can also complete words automatically by searching its database memory. 123(Numbers) Mode 123 mode allows you to enter numbers using one keystroke per number. Symbols • On selecting Symbol mode, a table of symbols is displayed on the screen. • Select the symbol you want by scrolling with navigation keys. Highlight the symbol you would like to use and press • . Once a symbol is selected and inserted, the phone will go back to the previous mode. 17 Making and Receiving Calls Dialling from the Standby Mode • Enter the phone number using the keypad. • Press • To end the call, press . or close the phone. Dialling from Call List Press to bring up call lists for the last 60 calls. Key icons are shown in the table below. Press to switch between each of these lists. • Scroll up and down to select the phone number you want. Scroll left to view the most recent calls and scroll right to view the oldest call. • Save the phone numbers in the phone book by pressing “Options” and pressing and selecting . Further instructions on saving phone numbers can be found on pg 25. • View call details, including the time of the Dialled, Received and Missed calls by pressing • ➔ ➔ . Select the number you want to dial and press To redial the last number called, press and hold to call the number. until the display shows the number being dialled. You are able to scroll through the call list which appears on the sub LCD by using up and down keys located on the side of your phone. 18 Dialling from Phone Book ➔ • To access the phone book press • Enter group, name or number details then press . If you don’t know a specific group you are searching for, simply search in “All Groups” option. Speed Dialling Speed dialling allows you to make phone calls quickly and easily. To use this feature, a speed dial number (000~299) needs to be assigned to a phone number. This can be done when adding a new number or via the speed dial lists, as described below. Assigning a speed dial ➔ to select “Speed dial”. • Press • Scroll to an empty speed dial number and press • Search your address book by group, name and press • Scroll to the desired number and press • To exit from the Speed dial menu press to “Add” a number. to search. . . Calling using a speed dial • Enter a speed dial location between 0 and 299. • Press • Check you have the correct number, or scroll to find it. • Press “Speed” to access the speed dial list. to dial the number. One Touch Dialling Speed dial memory locations from 001 through 009 can be used for one touch dialling. To dial a phone number stored in the speed dial memory from 001 through 009, simply press and hold the third digit of the memory location. For example, Location no. 009 • Press Note and hold down. Location 001 is preprogrammed as the Voice Mail number. This cannot be changed by the user. Mute Microphone The mute function prevents the other person from hearing your voice. • To activate “Mute” during conversation, press . The transmission of speech will be isolated and receiver can’t hear you. • To disable the mute feature, press . 19 Making a Three-Way Call Three-way calling allows you to talk with two people at the same time. • Dial the first phone number and press the • Once the first call connects, then dial the second phone number. • Press • Once the second call is connected, press Note . . Call Waiting Call waiting is a feature offered by your Service Provider. If a second call comes through while you are on a call, you will hear a beep every few seconds. To answer this second call, use the following procedure: • Press to answer the second call. The phone connects to the second caller, placing the first caller on hold. • Press again to get back to the first call. • Press to end the call. Note 20 Please contact your Service Provider if you wish to activate this feature. Using the Menus The phone menu allows you to check or change phone settings. E-Book 23 1. My Menu “My Menu” allows you to customise your own menu tree so that you can conveniently access your chosen features. There are three default items in the menu (Ring Tones, My Image and Alarm) ➔ • To view this menu, press • Up to 10 items can be chosen for “My Menu” . You are able to delete or move any item while in the menu by pressing or • “Option” and either “Move” “Erase”. To create a shortcut to a particular phone function, press in any menu where “My Menu” appears. 2. PIMs The “PIMs” menu is your Personal Information Manager. The features are: 1. Phone Book 2. Phone Book The phone is able to store up to 1,500 numbers, under 300 different contacts. The phone book can be accessed via the menu or by pressing 24 from the standby screen. 2.1.1. Search This function allows you to search by Name or Number. ➔ “PIMs” ➔ “Phone Book” ➔ • Press • If you want to search by group, scroll left or right to highlight desired group and “Search”. then scroll down. • Choose to search “Name” or “Number” and enter known details. • Press • The list of Names is displayed. (If no matches are found, the phone will return to to “Search”. the search page). • Press to go into “Options” menu, where there are four choices: “Call, Edit, Erase, Send Calling Card”. 2.1.2. Volume It is possible to adjust the key press, ringer and earpiece volume using the volumes/ scroll key on the left side of the phone. Key press volume can be altered in standby screen, ring volume while listening to ring tones and the earpiece while in a call. • To alter key, ringer and earpiece volume via the menu, press ➔ • Select ➔ “Settings” “Volume” “Key Volume”, “Ringer Volume” , or “Earpiece Volume” by pressing the corresponding key. • Scroll right to increase volume and left to decrease it. • Press “Save” to confirm the new setting. 29 3.3. Alert Alert enables you to set an audible notification for the following features: “Call Connect”, “Call Disconnect”, “Service”, and “Minute”. Call connect and disconnect sounds when a call is connected or discounted. “Service” sounds when a service area is entered. Finally, if you enable “Minute”, you will hear a beep after every minute while on a call. ➔ “Settings” ➔ • To enable this function, press • Scroll and select “Call Connect”, “Call Disconnect”, “Service” or “Minute”. • Press • Once enabled, you will see a tick mark. “Alerts”. to switch between “On/Off”. 3.4. Display This option enables you to configure the display settings. 3.4.1. Backlight You can set how long the backlight remains on after pressing a key or opening the phone. The possible settings are: Always Off, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, and Always On (when the phone is open). ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Display” ➔ • Press • Scroll through the backlight options and press “Backlight” “Save”. 3.4.2. Banner You can change the Banner that glides across the standby screen. The Banner can be a maximum of 14 characters, including spaces and punctuation. • Press • Press ➔ “Settings” ➔ to “Edit”. Sub LCD This menu allows you to control contrast and display format on the Sub LCD on the outside of the GCP-4020. 3.4.5.1 Contrast There are 40 Contrast levels available for the Sub LCD. • Press ➔ • ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Display” ➔ “Sub LCD” “Contrast”. To set Sub LCD Contrast, scroll through the values until you find the desired level and press to “Save”. 3.4.5.2 Display Format There are two display formats available for the Sub LCD, Normal Digital Clock and Analog Clock. • Press ➔ • ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Display” ➔ “Sub LCD” “Display”. Select either Normal Digital or Analog Clock and press to “Save”. 3.4.6. Big Dial This function displays numbers you dial using a large text size. To make the numbers you dial appear larger on screen, to make them easier to view, set the phone to “Big Dial”. • Press ➔ • Press to switch between “On/Off”. “Settings” ➔ “Display” ➔ “Big Dial” 3.5. Features This menu you allows you to customise your phone to suit your preferences. 3.5.1. Auto Retry The phone will automatically redial a failed call up to three times. • Press ➔ • Press to switch between “On/Off”. “Settings” ➔ “Features” ➔ “Auto Retry” 3.5.2. Answer 3.5.2.1. Auto Answer When this function is enabled, a call will automatically be answered after five seconds when the phone is open and connected to a hands-free kit. • • Press ➔ ➔ “Auto Answer”. Press “Settings” ➔ “Features” ➔ “Answer” to switch between “On/Off”. 31 3.5.2.2. Folder Open You are able to set the phone to answer incoming calls when the phone is opened. This allows you to confirm the callers’ ID on the sub LCD and then answer the call without pressing any keys. • • Press ➔ ➔ “Folder Open”. World Time Using this function, you can check the current time in other locations around the world. ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Features” ➔ • Press • Move the Red Longitude line left or right to view the current time in 61 different “World Time”. countries around the world. 3.5.4. DTMF Length This option allows you to set the DTMF length to short or long. When you are experiencing difficulty using an automated phone system that requires you to key in numbers, ie phone banking, it may be because the DTMF length is too short. If the tones are too short for the system to recognise the tones, the number will not connect. ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Features” ➔ • Press • Use the scroll key to choose between long or short DTMF length and press “DTMF Length”. to “Save”. 3.5.5. Data 3.5.5.1. Data/FAX In order to send or receive data or faxes through the phone, you have to set this option to “Data until off” or “Fax until off”. When you want to use the phone for a voice call, set to “Off”. • Press ➔ • ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Features” ➔ “Data” “Data/Fax”. Using the scroll key, highlight the option you want and press to “Save”. 3.5.5.2. DS Baud Rate To enable the phone to communicate correctly with a PC, you must set the baud rate to the same speed on both devices. This menu allows you to select the various data service speed rates. The possible options are: Auto baud, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, or 115200. By default it is set to 115200. If you change this setting on the phone ensure that the PC baud rates are changed to match accordingly. • Press ➔ • 32 ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Features” ➔ “Data” “Baud Rate”. Using the scroll key, select the desired rate and press to “Save”. 3.5.6. Please refer to the Gtran Quick Start Guide for information on downloading ring tones. Note The number of Ring Tones that can be downloaded through PC Sync depends on the memory available. My Image, My Melodies, Photo Album and E-book share the 1.5mb of memory available for downloading through PC Sync. 3.6.1 Call You can set a ring tone as a default ring for all incoming calls. ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Ring Tones” ➔ • Press • Select one of the following ring tone types, “Bells”, “Melody”, “My Melodies” or “Call”. “Voice Bells” • Scroll down and then left or right, listening to the ring tones. • Press “Options” to select a Ring Tone or to see the memory capacity. 33 3.6.2 Juke Box Juke Box is a melody player that can play a song in its entirety. • To listen to a song in Juke Box, press “Ring Tones” ➔ • ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Juke Box”. To select the song, scroll through “Bells”, “Melody”, “My Melodies” or “Voice Bells” and play the songs. 3.7. Image You are able to store up to 20 images and animations on your phone by downloading them via the PC Sync tool or via WAP (depending on services offered by your Service Provider). You are able to use these images to change the graphics shown on the screen during idle mode, power on/off and received/dialled calls. 3.7.1 My Image Images and animations can be selected from those on the phone or downloaded and set to appear when the phone is in Idle mode, Power On, Power Off, as well as when it Receives and Dials Calls. You are able to download a maximum of 20 images and animations using the GTRAN PC Sync Tool. • To select an image, press ➔ ➔ “Settings” ➔ “Image” “My Image” ➔ select an option “1-5”. • Scroll up/down to select the mode you wish to set an image for. Press • Scroll through the images and press “OK”. “OK” to select the image or to view 1.5mb of total memory capacity. Note The number of images that can be downloaded through PC Sync depends on the memory available. My Image, My Melodies, Photo Album and E-book share 1.5mb of total memory available for downloading through PC Sync. 3.7.2. Security The GCP-4020 provides many security options, including a user-programmable lock code and call restriction features. Note To access the security menu, you must enter a four-digit lock code. The lock code is preset at the factory to “0000”. 4.1. Auto Lock This function enables you to lock the handset and restrict use by other parties. ➔ “Security” ➔ • Press • Key in “0000” in the blank field. Press Note “Auto Lock”. to switch between “On/Off”. Emergency calls can still be made when the handset is locked. Press “Emergency” and Press and hold “OK” to place the call. to enable lock mode. To Unlock, press “Unlock” and enter the lock code “0000”. 4.2 Clear Memory CAUTION: READ BEFORE OPERATING - IF YOU SELECT “CLEAR ALL”, ALL THE DATA IN YOUR HANDSET WILL BE DELETED. THE DELETED DATA CAN NEVER BE RECOVERED. This menu option enables you to erase all saved lists from the handset’s memory. You are able to erase stored information from individual features or from all features. • ➔ To access the erase options, press “Security” ➔ “Clear Memory”. Input the Lock Code “0000”. • It is possible to delete all stored information from the following features: Phone book, Scheduler, Call History, Messages, Voice Memo, Text Memo, My Melodies, My Image, Album, E-Book, D-Day and Clear All. • Scroll through the list of options, highlight the desired option and press • Scroll left to “Yes” and press Note “OK”. “OK”. When deleting messages, you have the choice of: “Clear Inbox, Clear Outbox, Clear Drafts, Clear Calling Card, Clear All”. 35 4.3. Restrict This feature allows you to prevent another person from making calls from your phone, viewing the call history or the messages menu. • ➔ Press “Security” ➔ “Restrict” ➔ input the lock code ➔ use the scroll key to highlight the desired option, “Dialled Calls, Call History or Messages”. • Press to switch between “On/Off”. 4.4. Change Lock Code This option allows you to change your current lock code to a new one. The lock code is preset at the factory to “0000”. • To change lock code, press ➔ “Security” ➔ “Change Code” ➔ input the correct lock code ➔ key in a four digit lock code • “Save” ➔ reenter the lock code ➔ press Press . to “Save”. 4.5. Reset Phone CAUTION: READ BEFORE OPERATING - THIS OPTION RETURNS YOUR PHONE TO ITS FACTORY SETTINGS. The data referred to in “4.2 Clear Memory” will not be deleted. Memo 5.1. Voice Memo The GCP-4020 can record voice memos during a call or while in standby mode. These text files can then be read on your phone. 40 Phone Care Care and Tr Troubleshooting Take care when using the phone • Keep your phone free from dirt, dust, and liquid. • Keep your phone dry - humidity and liquids may cause your phone to fail and will corrode the internal circuits. • Keep your phone from getting too hot - high temperatures may damage the battery, shorten the life of electronic components, and warp or melt certain plastics. • Do not attempt to open or access the internal components of your phone. If your phone is not functioning properly, take it to the nearest service centre. • Do not drop, shake, or handle your phone in a rough manner - it may damage internal components or the LCD screen. Should your Product need warranty service, please return it to the dealer from whom it was purchased, or contact Advanced Portable Technologies (1994) Ltd. OUR WARRANTY Subject to the conditions of this Limited Warranty, GTRAN Wireless warrants this Product to be free from defects in design, material, and workmanship at the time of its original purchase by a consumer, and for a subsequent period of one (1) year. WHAT WE WILL DO If, during the warranty period, this Product fails to operate under normal use and service, due to defects in design, materials, or workmanship, GTRAN Wireless authorised distributors or service partners, in the country where you purchased the Product, will, at their option, either repair or replace the Product in accordance with the terms and conditions stipulated herein. GTRAN Wireless and/or its service partners reserve the right to charge a handling fee if a returned Product is found not to be under warranty according to the conditions below. CONDITIONS 1. The warranty is valid only if the original proof of purchase issued to the original purchaser by the dealer, specifying the date of purchase and serial number*, is presented with the Product to be repaired or replaced. GTRAN Wireless reserves the right to refuse warranty service if this information has been removed or changed after the original purchase of the Product from the dealer. 2. If GTRAN Wireless repairs or replaces the Product, the repaired or replaced Product shall be warranted for the remaining time of the original warranty period or for ninety (90) days from the date of repair, whichever is longer. Repair or replacement may involve the use of functionally equivalent reconditioned units. Replaced parts or components will become the property of GTRAN Wireless. 3. This warranty does not cover any failure of the Product due to normal wear and tear, or due to misuse, including but not limited to use in other than the normal and customary manner, in accordance with the GTRAN Wireless instructions for use and maintenance of the Product. Nor does this warranty cover any failure of the Product due to accident, modification or adjustment, acts of God, or damage resulting from liquid. 4. Since the cellular system on which the Product is to operate is provided by a carrier independent from GTRAN Wireless, GTRAN Wireless will not be responsible for the operation, availability, coverage, services, or range of that system. 5. This warranty does not cover Product failures caused by installations, modifications, or repair or opening of the product performed by non-GTRAN Wireless authorised personnel. 6. The warranty does not cover Product failures which have been caused by use of accessories or other peripheral devices which are not GTRAN Wireless branded original accessories intended for use with the Product. 7. Tampering with any of the seals on the Product will void the warranty. 45 8. THERE ARE NO EXPRESS WARRANTIES, WHETHER WRITTEN OR ORAL, OTHER THAN THIS PRINTED LIMITED WARRANTY, ALL IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE LIMITED TO THE DURATION OF THIS LIMITED WARRANTY. IN NO EVENT SHALL GTRAN WIRELESS OR ITS LICENSORS BE LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OF ANY NATURE WHATSOEVER, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOST PROFITS OR COMMERCIAL LOSS, TO THE FULL EXTENT THOSE DAMAGES CAN BE DISCLAIMED BY LAW. Some countries/states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, or limitation of the duration of implied warranties, so the preceding limitations or exclusions may not apply to you. The warranty provided does not affect the consumer’s statutory rights under applicable legislation in force, nor the consumer’s rights against the dealer arising from their sales/ purchase contract. *In some countries/regions additional information is requested. If so, this is clearly shown on the valid proof of purchase. 46
