What Other Primer Timer
Chapters are doing?
This month we welcome Don Bowen, DeWayne Guess and Bernard Taylor,
three new members of the San Antonio Prime Timers! It’s good to
have these Prime Men coming onboard and joining a fine group of men with
like interests.
– Phil
It is my pleasure to relate to you a conversation I had recently with Gene Wyatt
and Calvin Hammock, two of our Prime Timers, as part of the ongoing series of
Prime Timer interviews. Gene and Calvin are two very fine men who have had
a number of interesting experiences through the years.
Gene Wyatt was born on Oct 23, 1922, in Beaumont, Texas at home. He has
one sister, three years older than he. In the 2nd grade, he had
back to back episodes of the mumps, the measles and whooping cough,
causing him to miss 6 weeks of school. After that, he never missed another day
of school throughout this secondary education. His attendance at South Park
High School ended Gene, age 4 with the 11 grade in Beaumont. There was no
12th grade. Because of the Spindle Top oil discovery nearby, Gene's school
district was one of the wealthiest in the country. From there, Gene attended
South Park Junior College (which later became Lamar University), located on
the 3rd floor of his high school. His father worked for Magnolia Petroleum
Company, later becoming Mobil Oil, for 40 years. Gene attended Lamar for a
year and a half, then dropped out to work for a while, eventually entering the
University of Texas as a junior just as World War II broke out.
Gene enlisted right away, wanting to train as a pilot. His Army Air Corps (which
later became the Air Force) career began in 1942 with flight training and
gunnery school. After graduating from Williams Field, Chandler Az. in 1943 he
went to gunnery school in Ajo, Az.------ and later to Edwards Air Force Base to
fly the P-39 King Cobra. Two very emotional events for him were a couple of
plane crashes he endured, one in the Philippines and one over an Oregon farm.
The P-63 had a history of mechanical problems, and the engine quit on him
during one flight over Oregon in 1944. He radioed the flight tower, and they
gave him the choice of bailing out or trying to land the plane. He chose to land
the plane after spotting a big open field. There was a Catholic church nearby.
R.S.V.P. POLICY FOR
CASINO LUNCHEONS:
You need to RSVP back to Art
Deerheim if you plan to attend
this luncheon, by no later than
10 a.m. on the day of the
luncheon. Art needs to know
how many will be attending, so
he can reserve a designated
seating area. If we do not get at
least 10 RSVP responses, we
will just have to show up and
take our chances on eating
together as a group.

As he prepared to land, the plane
caught on fire. At that moment, Gene
says his thoughts were “You idiot! You
should have bailed out when you had
the chance!” He lands belly in, plowing
through the wheat field. With smoke in
the cockpit, he had to play it by ear as
he skidded across the field. As the plane
finally stopped, he was able to get out
of the cockpit and run for 50 yards
before the plane exploded and knocked
him to the ground. Gene was knocked
unconscious and later awakened by a
tapping on his shoulder by someone
that he could only imagine to be an
7
angel. Actually it was Father Hildebrand from the nearby church. Gene
tried to get up, but was unable to stand. He was hospitalized for 8
months at Fort Sam Houston, encased in a body cast, and there was
worry at first that he might be paralyzed. But his recovery was
complete from Tennessee Gas. Shortly afterward, the newly married
couple moved to the heart of the Bluegrass Country, Lexington,
Kentucky, which was Gene's new duty assignment.
It was several years before Gene and his wife decided to have children.
He wanted them badly, but she did not. During a social outing, she
witnessed firsthand how much Gene loved to interact with the children
of friends, and she told him afterwards “Let's make babies!” This was 3
years into the marriage. They tried and tried with no success in the
fertility department. After several trips to the doctors it was
determined that Gene was the one with the fertility problem. It took a
conversation with the doctor to finally pinpoint the source of the
problem: More to Gene Story in the San Antonio newsletter... Let your
friends know that the NEW San Antonio Prime Timer’s Website IS
available! It is mainly a first contact request for potential members
who want more information. Prime Timer organizers from various
chapters circulate Regional Gathering information and newsletters to
all other Prime Timers Chapters. If you want more information about
attending any up-coming Prime Timers gatherings, or reading other
chapter newsletters, please let me know (Bryan) by email and I can
forward it to you. [email protected] or [email protected]
In mid-March, at my urologist's request, I attended a seminar on
Erectile Dysfunction given by a urology group called Urology San
Antonio. It was superb. About 60 guys and a few female companions
heard Dr. Leroy Jones talk about the problems that many men have
with erections. He focused on the available treatments -- the three
pills, injections, and the three types of penile implants. I learned much!
Dr. Jones particularly favors the implants. They have been in use since
1973. The thousands of men who have received them give them
wonderful ratings. Ninety-two percent of the recipients report that
they are totally satisfied with the implant. At the end of the seminar,
Dr. Jones distributed an evaluation form on which there was an
opportunity to ask for a personal consultation. I checked that box.

Dear Friend
The Central Oklahoma Prime Timers are pleased to invite you to the Prime Timers 2011 Labor Day GetA-Way Weekend. The five day event held at the Southwest’s premier gay resort – the Habana Inn in
Oklahoma City – begins Thursday evening September 1, and continues through noon Monday,
September 5, 2011.
Every year nearly 250 Prime Timers and their friends converge on the Habana Inn for a weekend of fun
in the sun. The Habana features two swimming pools, three bars, a restaurant and an adult gift shop,
plus shows on Thursday and Sunday nights. It has free wireless internet. It is located in the heart of
Oklahoma City’s gay bar district.
The weekend begins with a welcome party around the pool on Thursday evening. The Labor Day
gathering is an opportunity to meet old friends and make new ones. Scheduled events include a Happy
Hour every day (Friday through Sunday), dinners with entertainment on Friday and Saturday, poolside
continental breakfast three days (Friday through Sunday), a poolside box lunch on Saturday, a brunch on
Sunday and a farewell coffee and earlier brunch on Monday.
Most attendees find their own diversions, but if you want to venture out, Oklahoma City is filled with
things to do. Museums include the new Oklahoma Historical Museum, the National Cowboy and Western
Heritage Museum, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Oklahoma Science Museum, and the Paseo
Artists District. Other sights are the Brick-town entertainment district and the Oklahoma City National
Memorial. If antiques are your thing, there are hundreds of stores available for your shopping pleasure.
The Oklahoma City gay entertainment district is located right next door to the Habana, featuring even
more bars. We are working to arrange small group trips to some of these sights on Friday and Saturday.
There will also be a Bridge Tournament.
The cost
The Labor Day Weekend is still a great entertainment value. You can select the PACKAGE DEAL for
$170which includes your registration and all the events, including the five paid meals. If you register for
thepackage deal before July 15, you’ll get a $15 discount. Or, you can still select your events ala carte.
You pay the registration fee of $75 and then selectwww.LasVegasPrimeTimers.com
and pay for the meals you want. If you only want to
register and attend one or two meals, this option saves you money. If you want all meals, early
registration for the package deal saves you $47.
The registration fee gives you access to the event, all happy hours, all continental breakfasts, the
hospitality room, movies by the pool, and any other included events we introduce. We have always
allowed guests to register when they arrive, but based on last year’s attendance, we could easily run out
of capacity at some of the meals. As a result, the registration fee for those who register after August 15
and on-site will be $100, and all meals will be ala carte subject to availability. It’s your choice – COPT
wants to give you the same great value you’ve come to expect. We did have to raise prices slightly this
year due to increased costs, but it is still a great value. The package deal combined with the early bird
discount offers you great savings. We still think the Labor Day Weekend is the best Prime Timer deal
available each year.

NEW POLICY FOR
WEDNESDAY LUNCHEONS The Casinos are starting to get very
particular and want to know in advance
when we are having a group of more
than 10, so they can plan around our
being there. They claim that in order to
serve us properly, they need to be sure
that they have enough staff
(waiters/waitress') available.
Therefore, you need to RSVP back
to me (Art), if you plan to attend these
luncheons, by no later than 10 a.m. on
the day of the luncheon. I need to know
how many will be attending, so I can
reserve a designated seating area. If I
do not get at least 10 responses, we
will just have to show up and take our
chances on eating together as a group.
