Dear Friends in Christ,
“I sense that the moment has come to commit all of the Church’s
energies to a new evangelization…No believer in Christ, no institution of the
Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples.”
In the winter of 1990, Pope John Paul II wrote these words to the entire Church
as a vital call to action in the name of Jesus Christ.
Twenty years later, on June 28, 2010, our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI
embraced and re-ignited the urgency of this call, announcing the launch of
a council for the new evangelization—emphasizing that now, more than ever
before, is the time for all Catholics to answer that call with fervor!
Just over a decade since John Paul II’s words inspired FOCUS’ first seeds at
a small college in Atchison, Kansas, our efforts have grown to a staff of over
250, reaching 50 campuses across the United States. At FOCUS, Pope Benedict
XVI’s renewed charge brings us back to our roots in the new evangelization.
And for that reason, our theme for the upcoming year is “Answering the Call”.
As the culture around us is devastated by sin, the urgent cry for an outpouring
of Christ-like love and leadership grows stronger by the minute. As Christians,
it is indeed our “supreme duty” to answer that call, sharing the person of Jesus
Christ with all peoples. At FOCUS, our missionaries are fervently answering the
call on college campuses. By inviting young men and women into a relationship
with God, and showing them how to share His love with their peers, we are
ultimately building up Christian leaders to fill our culture with the life and love it
so desperately desires.
Certainly, in the midst of a global financial crisis, the past year has presented
challenges, but with God’s grace and our mission fueling our energy, we forged
ahead. We’ve rediscovered the unyielding strength and dedication of our staff
through financial sacrifice, and put forth new efforts to fortify our financial
stewardship. With the extraordinary action of our staff and benefactors, we have
secured FOCUS’ mission for the future, and we will continue answering God’s
call to proclaim Christ to the world.

on campus
samantha’s story
Samantha Kelley grew up in a Catholic family that went to church every Sunday.
She was a top student, an incredible athlete, and her family had always been her
solid foundation. At the end of high school, she was thrilled at her acceptance to
play division-one soccer at the University of Connecticut and could not wait to live
the life of a college athlete. That summer, she left home for the first time, eager to
dive into her freshman year.
However, within months of arriving at UConn, Sam felt completely lost. Isolated
from her friends and family, and buried under piles of unread books, Sam injured
her knee and was left to sit on the sideline of the soccer field.
“I suddenly felt that everything I had was gone. I just

had this hole in me that I didn’t know how to fill.”
Sam found herself in a dark place, looking for fulfillment and approval from the wrong
people. “I started getting drunk and partying with my teammates, basing my own selfworth on everybody else. I was building up walls against the people around me, and I
didn’t want to let them see who I really was.”
Throughout her struggles, Sam’s family began to worry. They encouraged her to
find a student organization that could reunite her with her faith and teach her how
to develop a relationship with God, but she felt incapable letting Christ into her heart.
“I didn’t really know what a friendship with God looked like. I always thought of Him
as an authoritarian figure, rather than someone who actually loved me and cared
about what I was dealing with,” she explains.
In the height of August preseason before her junior year, Sam decided to return to
Mass to escape the demanding schedule of her sport. Afterwards, as she attempted
to sneak out the door, a FOCUS missionary named Angel approached her and
struck up a conversation. Angel mentioned that she was leading a weekly Bible
study and asked if Sam wanted to join.
Astounded by Angel’s sincere interest in her, Sam felt her usual defenses beginning
to retreat.
“This girl was just so friendly and joyful, there was
no way I could turn her down…I realized she had
something I didn’t.”
Despite her participation in Angel’s Bible study, Sam continued to struggle with her
fear of letting God into her life. Angel recognized that Sam was silently calling out
for something more, and her prayers for Sam ultimately led her to an answer for
that call; the upcoming FOCUS National Conference in Orlando. Although Samantha
declined the invitation, citing the cost to get to Florida as her excuse, Angel was
determined to find a way to get her there.
The day before UConn FOCUS students were scheduled to leave for Orlando, Angel
approached Sam again with an overwhelming offer; she would pay Sam’s way to
the conference.
“Angel had invested in me like nobody ever had before,
and she had been praying with me and for me since
the first time we met.”
Once again, she could not say “no” to Angel.

In Orlando, Sam stood in awe of the multitude of Catholic students, and she took in the
wisdom of the speakers like a sponge. But ultimately, it was Jesus himself who pierced
her heart. “After Mass, we were praying and I felt the Lord asking me to surrender the
rest of the conference to Him. I heard Him say ‘Sam, let your walls down.’”
Sam realized that she was on the edge of letting go, and knowing what she needed to
do, she stepped into the line for confession. “That was really the final step for me,” she
explained. “I was finally letting my guard down, and I poured my heart out to Jesus.”
After confession, she knelt down with nearly 4,000 other people, in preparation for
Eucharistic adoration. As the Eucharist entered the room, Sam’s body started trembling.
“It was like God was literally breaking down the walls
around me. My whole being knew it was Jesus, and
the hole I had felt for so long was instantly filled.”
Returning from Orlando, Sam’s relationship with Christ was completely renewed,
and she began to look at life through a different lens. “Angel was a wonderful
model of what a Christ-centered friendship looked like, and I wanted to share that
with my other friends and teammates. I feel like I’ve learned more about how to
love as Christ loves: selflessly and unconditionally.”
Today, Sam attributes everything in her life to her trust in God.
“He has blessed me with the gifts I have, and I’ve learned to worship God through
my sport. I now play for Him, recognizing that He is the reason I’m here…Christ has
purified and filled me, and I can honestly say that I have never been so happy
and so on fire for Him.”

“Counter cultural” was just one phrase used to describe the incredible
impact of FOCUS’ National Conference 2010. The event’s theme, “Made
for More,” echoed down the halls of the Orlando Marriott Resort, kicking
off the new year with a renewed outlook for thousands of college students
from hundreds of schools across the United States.
“The trip was truly life-changing,” remarks Sharon Sorcic. The
Minnesota State University student traveled on a bus full of strangers
for hours from Mankato, Minnesota to Orlando, Florida in hopes
of finding some of the joy she saw in the FOCUS missionaries
on her campus during the fall semester. At FOCUS Conference,
Sharon encountered the love of Christ face-to-face in the Eucharist,
forgiveness in reconciliation, and encouragement in the example of her
peers who were seeking to grow closer to God.

problem with feeling ashamed of
my faith on campus as Catholics
are so harshly scrutinized
at times, but now I feel so
empowered and proud to wear a
cross and to be a living example
of my faith on campus.”

at midnight during a live concert with Matt Maher. This year, FOCUS hopes
to reach out to twice as many students who, like Sharon, are desperately
searching for identity, purpose, and transformation in their lives.
FOCUS Conference 2011 will invite young men and women to four
locations around the U.S. (Denver, St. Paul, Nashville,
Baltimore) with the theme, “Answering the Call.” The
three-day event will encourage and equip college
students to respond to God’s work in their lives by
taking an active role in building up the Church and
sharing the love of God with other students on the
college campus.

Each year, FOCUS selects two outstanding student leaders from
host campuses across the U.S. for these prestigious awards
in evangelization. These two students are not only leaders in
their class, but authentic inspirations to our FOCUS staff and
the campus ministries they serve. This year, FOCUS recognizes
these truly faithful students who are answering the call on their
college campuses…
St. Clare Award—Terese Decker
Between studying for graduate-level engineering courses,
leading Bible study, and cultivating her own relationship with
Christ, any student would be exhausted, but for Terese Decker,
motivation is found in sharing the faith with her peers at the
University of Colorado.
FOCUS missionary Hilary Rowe is astounded by Terese’s
extraordinary ability to reach out to fellow students. “She is
committed to the making her relationships with people a priority.
She spends most of her time, not necessarily at church, but in
the engineering building working with other engineers. They all
know how committed she is to her faith, and they always come
to her with questions about Christianity. She is genuine and real
with people, and this is a great asset to her apostolate!”

As far as the missionaries at the University of Nebraska can
tell, there isn’t anything that deters senior Michael Guenther
from taking the lead. Remarks one UNL FOCUS missionary,
“His self-motivation is incredible. He began his own Bible study
and recruited nearly all of those men just
by spreading the word.”
This year, Michael helped open a campus household called the
“Hippo House” under the patronage of St. Augustine of Hippo.
The household of men focuses on the importance of prayer,
fellowship, and personal discipline in each of their lives.

proven to have the heart of a true missionary. He has a huge
impact on the men who live with him and is an unstoppable

“I cannot fathom that there is a place in the world such as this…
It is 100+ degrees with nearly 100% humidity. There are hundreds of bodies sleeping on the sidewalks,
draped over stone, half-hidden behind dugouts or burrows in the buildings.” Michael Preszler, a senior
at South Dakota State University wrote these words in his journal on the second morning of his trip in
Kolkata, India with the FOCUS Missions program.
Michael, eight other students, and five FOCUS missionaries witnessed extreme poverty every morning
of the month that they volunteered with the Missionaries of Charity. Like all FOCUS mission trips,
their time in Kolkata was meant to be one of heroic generosity in service as well as a time of spiritual
growth, but for Michael, this trip would prove to be the adventure of a lifetime that would redefine love
and selflessness forever.
Mother Teresa used to say, “Do not think that love, in order to be genuine, has to be extraordinary. What
we need is to love without getting tired.” In the slums of Kolkata, where the Missionaries of Charity
serve the poorest of the poor, these simple words take on incredible meaning. Michael and his group
volunteered at various houses during their stay, but their first day was at Prem Dan, the home for the
dying and destitute.
Everywhere they turned were men and women in their final moments of life, brought there by the
sisters to die with dignity. “It was there, on my first day of work, that I realized Love (in all cases) is a
choice,” Michael says.
He and the other volunteers helped where they could: dressing wounds, massaging deformities, and
caring for various other needs. For Michael, it was a moment of conviction. “I realized that it was only
through God’s grace and an environment such as Kolkata that God could reveal to me so distinctly my
failures,” Michael says.
“The truth is, I witnessed selflessness and love that I had never
thought possible.”
Michael’s observation is a beautiful example of why FOCUS Missions exists. While the primary mission field
“Evangelization means to set out with Christ to pass on the gift we have
received, to transform poverty of every kind.” –Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger

for FOCUS is the college campus, we are not tending souls
in order that they remain there. FOCUS desires to raise
up men and women who will bring the Good News of the
Gospel to all humanity, both in the offices of corporate
America and in the slums of the developing world.
Every year, FOCUS Missions leads young men and women
to serve the suffering members of the Body of Christ
in El Salvador, Jamaica, India, Alaska, the Bronx, New
Orleans, Peru, Ghana, Mexico and the Philippines; as well
as pilgrimages to Spain to walk the Camino de Santiago
and to Lourdes, France. Michael’s experience of renewed
passion and conviction in India is just one example of the
many lives that have been transformed by these missions.
Reflecting on his experience in Kolkata, Michael knows
that just as God provided the grace to wash the wounds
of a dying man, so too will he provide the grace to
witness Christ to classmates and strangers in the
cafeteria.

“When selflessness begins to evolve, our personal daily
sufferings become very minimal.” This realization is one of
the many enduring graces that Michael and his companions
are now bringing back to their families, friends, classmates,
and co-workers.
