This 4th of July the South Bay group attended the Morgan Hill parade and I was reminded of how different parades can be. We’d done the Rose, White and Blue parade in San Jose for a few years and decided to give Morgan Hill a try again this year. WOW, the Morgan Hill parade was always a good parade but this year reminded me about just how good a parade can be. It’s about a 4 mile square route and there are people everywhere along the way! Thousands of people! The spirit and attitude of this parade made me remember just how good it can feel again. We’ll probably alternate between parades in the coming years but if you want to understand what makes us as participants feel good Morgan Hill is the place to be. A little side note, Did you know that Congress has passed a resolution naming the second Sunday in August as “Spirit of ’45 Day”? As we approach the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II the MVCC should swing into action and become a major presence wherever and whenever we can in these events. Every newsletter says “SUPPORT OUT TROOPS”. Here’s a chance to say thanks once again to the brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, aunts and uncles who went off and did their duty to their country. Remember them now, sadly, they’ll be gone too soon. July is the busiest month of the year for the MVCC between parades, conventions, and the D-Day celebrations. I hope every one of you had an opportunity to get out and spread the word about the club. We do some advertising but too often we heard that familiar, “I didn’t know anything like this existed”. All of us need to work explaining who we are and what we do to those people. Invite them to our events and meets but mostly let them know that there is a growing number of people who just like the vehicles and their histories. You can be a recruiter for the MVCC as well as a member. If you would like flyers or business cards to keep with you to pass out let me or your local VP know and we’ll get them out to you. Are you ready for September Tower Park? September is right around the corner and with it a lot of MV events, the most fun and important being our very own Camp Delta at Tower Park. We’re featuring a Tracked Vehicle Showcase, so if you have a tracked vehicle, now’s the time to bring it! Any military vehicle with tracks is welcome - even halftracks or vehicles missing one track are welcome to attend. I’ll be there with the USMC Weasel, sporting a newly installed, original, Weasel self-sealing fuel tank. If we get more than one Weasel, we’re calling it the West Coast Weasel Fest (hmmm, WCWF sounds like some kind of world class sport…) I’m hoping to get access to an open area next to the dry camping area for an obstacle course, where we can show off our vehicle’s capability and our track driving skills (or lack of). So if you’ve got a Weasel, even if it has to sit on a trailer, please bring it to Tower Park. See you there! Dave No. Bay, East VP Sonny Hanson (707) 552-6918 Div. 707 & 415 [email protected] Hello to every one in the North Bay. I hear the 3rd and 4th of July parades in Benicia and American Canyon were a big success, unfortunately I was not able to be in them this year due to a short stay in the hospital on the 3rd and 4th. On July 5 we had an open house on the LCS 102, Mighty midget at Mare Island. The day started with a guided tour of the very seldom seen back side of the Island. Four jeeps made the tour. In attendance were John and Marilynn Neuenburg, Jim Porterfield, Scott and Wyatt Rohrs, Lazaro Sanchez, Joseph West, Greg Lalonde, Fred Klink, John Fornbacher, Percival “Chico” Ramirez. I arrived later in my 41 Dodge. Sonny Hanson Visit our website: www.mvccnews.net No. Bay West VP Scott Rohrs 415 259 8177 Divisions 707 & 415 [email protected] Divisions 415, 707 west August 2014 Hello from the North Bay. Well I hope everyone enjoyed a outstanding fourth of July holiday. It was a busy holiday weekend for us in the North Bay. It started with the twilight parade in Benicia on the third. We had a good turnout of vehicles and reenactors. It’s always fun when you can make some noise with the oxygen/propane gun. “The crowd eats it up”! The next morning the local Napa boys participated in the Napa downtown parade, all of us decked out in uniforms and field gear. After the parade we moved up to the Vets Home in Yountville, and displayed the vehicles. Mingled with Veterans and listened to some great big band music as we waited for the fireworks show. The fifth of July found us on Mare Island in Vallejo (the former Naval base). Led by Greg Lalonde and Jim Porterfield, we took a little “behind the scenes” convoy around the island. We enjoyed incredible views of the bay, and had an awesome photo opportunity with our vehicles. Fred Klink (the leader of the Naval Amphibious Forces group) coordinated a living history and public education event after the convoy at the LCS 102 (landing craft support ship). This “Gun Boat” is moored at the dock at the former naval base. The crew of the ship put on a great lunch and let us rome freely throughout the ship. Sonny Hanson, Jim Neuenburg, where there and had club fliers for guests. Overall a very event filled weekend and enjoyable time had by all. Remember to get your reservations in for the fall Tower Park event. The Sonoma County Air show is also in September this year. Enjoy this great weather and this great club. “Out in Front” Scott Rohrs North Bay West VP 5 Mvcc staff South Bay VP Kim Sievert (408) 253-9469 [email protected] Divisions 408 North & 650 Events of July and future activities for MVCC South S.F. Bay Area 4th of July The MVCC participated in the 4th of July parade in downtown Morgan Hill. We had 8 vehicles that included a maiden parade voyage for a freshly restored WW2 Jeep owned by Carl S. Weather was cool at about 90 degrees and there was a nice wind. Thanks to Jo-Ann and early registration, we had position # 95 out of about 130. There was a packed town of observers and the route weaved it way back and forth to the train station. There was a great appreciation of our military vehicles. For the most part, the uniform of the day, Hawaiian shirt over O.D. was followed, but there were a few die-hards. 11 & 12 July The Littlefield Auction. The Collings Foundation sanctioned Auctions America to auctioned off the vehicles from Jacques Littlefield's collection, that they did not need or were excess to their needs. There were 121 vehicles in the auction and 326 lots of vehicle parts and accessories. Auction America handled the auction and promoted the fact that 100 % proceeds of the auction, will go to The Collings Foundation. There were about 300 bidders. The grand total was around $10.2 million for construction of a building to house the vehicle they kept. It was a very sad Saturday afternoon after the auction, saying far well to all the vehicles. It was also the last time for visiting the Pony Tracks Ranch. The auction results can be found at http://www.auctionsamerica.com/events/all-lots.cfm?SaleCode=LC14 8th through 10th August Upcoming…………. The “Spirit of ’45” event returns to San Jose on August 8 thru 10th. All MVCC members and vehicles are invited to this “Spirit of '45” Event at History Park 1650 Senter Road, San Jose. Overnight dry tent camping is available. The 2014 version of the “Sprit of ’45” poster highlights having a live band and swing dancing, 1940 fashion show and 1920 – 1940’s vintage cars, WW2 vehicles, WW2 military re-enactors and their tent city, book signings and kids activities and much more. Members with military vehicles get in free, if they drive into display area. https://www.facebook.com/BayAreaSpiritof45 11 November Upcoming Veterans Day Parade in San Jose. Jo-Ann sent in our request to participate in this parade. No other location has been explored, as yet. Keep tuned to the “G” spot (G503.com) MVCC section for updates or email me. December Upcoming The South Bay Area MVCC and other areas members are invited to our Christmas party & gift exchange. Dates TBD and location will most likely be Harry’s Hofbrau on Saratoga Avenue. In a record of 170 entries we were number 94 in position and I think the best showing of Military Vehicles. Ed Roberts in his historically equipped 42 GPW looked great, followed by the Cooper's 44 GPW, George and Cathleen, he was in Army Air Core class A's and Cathleen in a 40's dress and bonnet, who by the way were pictured on page 5 of the San Leandro Times news paper under "Everybody has a blast at the 4th of July Parade" Next came John and Marilynn Neuenburg in their recently reconfigured British Desert Group 42 GPW and both of them looking like they just came off a movie set . 4 Vickers's machine guns. After that, driving her Chevrolet Military Blazer was Terri Karvonan with guests Liz and Gerry as side kicks Right behind was Kevin Karvonan in his Military Police 44 GPW, with Robert and Scott as troops. Well that adds up to 4 GPW's. I guess It's time. My 1945 MB was also in the parade towing the museum's 18 foot-long A7 Wing tank, still laying down a smoke screen.. Following were our own Bobby, our museum desk docent and his friend Robert, in their Ford P/U towing a Civil War cannon. This parade is 3.3 miles long, the longest in the state and our clutch legs get a work out, but every one had a good time honoring our country and our military history. Two of our volunteers were in full military combat gear, Carlo and Pit both carrying BAR's, walked the whole distance . We then adjourned to the Naval Air Museum for refreshments, I want to thank one and all for their participation and dedication in keeping the history alive for our future generations, who were a large part of the viewing public. That's all for now, Over and out, The 40's. I will give a full report with photos when we get back. We had another successful 4th Parade in Monterey, although I had four vehicles signed up, we had one no show. It always amazes me how the announcers can’t seem to get it right as we parade in front of the review stand. “We know have four vehicles from the MVCC” and there are only three of us! Oh well, guess they can’t count, or change their script on the fly. We had Marc leading; as his vehicle is older than mine, I followed him, and since Damon’s truck is so much larger than us he pulled up the rear, I think he is used to that and doesn’t seem to mind. My jeep ran well; for a change, as it should. As most of you know I have no mechanical skills and had it in the shop, got new shocks, springs, rebuilt carburetor, new fuel pump, & thermostat, plus the standard lube & oil change. I still have a oil leak from one of the seals but we are saving that for “next time”. There are a couple of photos that I took before the parade somewhere else in the newsletter and maybe some from Marc if he submits them. More about the W & P Show next month. Jack Valenti Come on out and Join the Party! 2016 MVPA Convention Committees The MVCC has been awarded the 2016 MVPA Convention, it will take place August 11-13, 2016 at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton Ca. This is your chance to strut your stuff in front of enthusiasts from most states and many countries, plus people new to the organized hobby who see our advertisements and will attend their first MV meet. At the Camp Delta meet in April we talked to members wanting to help. It takes many volunteers to do a great Convention and the MVCC has some of the best. We had a level-of-interest sheet for people to mark what committee categories they are interested in. Some said, “I’ll do whatever you want me to do.” That’s the spirit! If you are not on our radar screens, please respond after you read this article. We are choosing committee heads as you read this and will start building committees soon from those on our current list. There will be some tangible benefits for those who work on this show with us. Besides being part of the behind the scenes action with first in last out access, there will be parking considerations and more. Committee members will share in the success of creating a great MV event. A great way to meet people with similar interests especially for new members so come and join us and be apart of the team and enjoy the hobby in a way you will remember for a long time to come. Some posts don’t overlap so it is possible to be on more than one committee. If you want to get on our list or learn more details about what committees do at the National Conventions and the perks: There will be a meeting following the general membership meeting next month at Tower Park. This will be an event you will not want to miss! So why not join the team and help your club put on the largest showcase yet! Auctions America did a great job of it over four days, July 9th thru the 12th. The first two days were preview days, the third day the parts were auctioned, and on the fourth, the vehicles themselves were auctioned. The proceeds of $10.2 million will be used to move the 80 vehicles that the Collings Foundation kept to Stow, Massachusetts, and to construct a large building to house them. There were many MVCC members on hand to watch and bid on vehicles and parts. I was onsite for 3 days and have put a couple pictures below. This Fall we are featuring a MV showcase: “Weasels and Other Tracked MVs,” scheduled at this point for Friday morning. Dave Porter is our POC so contact him if you can bring a MV. His info is next to his VP mug shot. A couple of Weasel people have asked for their day in the sun - now we hope a few show up! Dave can probably use some help rounding up the Weasels in the region so please think about who has what and pass the word. All tracked MVs are invited and that means halftracks too. Who brought the Kettenkrad last April? Let’s invite him. What can you bring, restored or not? Spud guns are returning to the display field! Air powered only. Bring your own spuds. Parts talked to him for twenty minutes before the guy asked “who are you” ? In April 2015 we are planning two. The first will be Emergency Vehicles – Fire, Rescue, Ambulance, MP, and Wrecker. All nationalities. Also we will have a Foreign Military Vehicle Showcase in April. This can include U.S. vehicles with foreign markings, or U.S. made vehicles for foreign contracts even if currently restored with U.S. markings. For example jeeps with British, Canadian, Chinese, or Russian data plates. For multi-day displays such as living history camps or museum info tables, we are going to focus on the display areas by the two pools, with optional areas around the big field by the Willow trees if these will not interfere with MV showcases. KOA may relocate the dog run by next Spring. Last April some members set up a nice living history camp in the Dry Camping Field beyond the Pavilion. This looked great, however for April we really need to maximize the dry camping space there, and so that field will be set up as in prior years next April. Campers can set up whatever displays will fit in their campsites of course, but we really encourage folks to do displays in the high profile area by the pools and main road. Keep in mind this area is not for “civilian style” camping even if a military display is included. No Civvy vehicles or obvious civvy gear please. The whole thing should be a display, meaning living history-style camping only. Militaria collections using modern tables and tents may also qualify. These common areas are NOT for vendors. Vendors must purchase a regular campsite, numbered or dry. In September we focus our meet in Campground 4 and have sites available there. Since we have less dry camping pressure, we will designate part of the dry camping field for Civvy vehicle parking so people don’t have to park on the levee. Drive past the Pavilion and look for signs. Otherwise there is no parking in the campgrounds other than in your own campsite, except for MV-only parking by the CG4 restrooms. This can include “for sale” MVs. Please do not store trailers in the dry camping field in September. We need space for commuters. Trailers can go on the levee in September, or the trailer parking field by the guard shack. In April do not park trailers on the levee because we get a LOT of commuters! I will be the coordinator for displays in the common areas for both events. If you want to get something on the Activities Flyer that is handed out and posted at the meet, and printed in Issue #9, give me a shout at [email protected] or 415-491-1601. In September I can be found at space #297. Remember that Jo-Ann Lesser coordinates April camping only. Contact Stockton Delta KOA directly for September reservations, at 800-562-0913.
