polycythemia, a rare blood cancer.

Many friends of Marmion knew him as the “tree

maintain the Abbey tree farm—planting, spraying and selling—and developing a pine tree
nursery business. He was most at home on his
“red farmer” tractor or his Army surplus jeep;
a man in perpetual motion.
His brother monks best remember Fr. Andrew
for his fidelity to prayer, his high principles and
standards, and his great love for his community,
his students and his family.
After ordination he began a remarkable career
as a master Latin teacher of Illinois and national

of Geneva and Jeffrey Gerold of St. Charles, and guest speaker Rev. John Schlegel, S.J., president of Creighton University,

The three valedictorians spoke on the graduates “Past, Present and Future.”
“ ‘Graduate’ comes from the Latin word for ‘step’—trust me,
Fr. Andrew and Mrs. Strand made sure I would know—and
today that is what we are taking: another step in our lives. We
are all moving up, and moving on. None of us, however, is on
quite the same flight of stairs. What we all share is the desire
to climb, to rise upon the foundation built underneath us by
everyone in this audience.”
We are all moving up, and moving
on. None of us, however, is on quite
the same flight of stairs. What we all
share is the desire to climb...
Guest Speaker Rev. John Schlegel S.J. then addressed the
graduates, “While at Marmion you were urged to determine
those non-negotiable values and principles upon which you
will forge your personal and professional life. Rooted in
Benedictine spirituality and tradition, you balance prayer and
work, generosity and hospitality, richness in service and being crafters of a peaceful society. To live and act accordingly
is to Respect Your Future. To do that is to Respect Yourself.”

Salute to Youth
Salute Dinner Welcomes 794 Guests
The 47th annual Salute to Youth Dinner, Marmion Academy’s
annual black-tie benefit, was held on April 26 at the Drury
Lane in Oakbrook Terrace. The elegant evening brought together new and long-time friends of Marmion to honor the
students of the Class of 2009. The Salute to Youth Dinner
is the oldest continuous high school benefit in the Chicago
area and is sponsored by the Marmion Academy 55-member
Board of Lay Trustees.
General Chaircouple Phil and Lynn
Cali welcomed 794 guests and reported that this year’s dinner-dance profited $180,000, which will benefit the educational programs of the Academy’s
college-preparatory curriculum.

Students Stage West Side Story
Marmion Academy presented the spring musical West Side
Story under the direction of English teacher Kristin Voris.
This was the first time in several decades that the play was
produced by a Marmion teacher. The gym (turned auditorium) was home to a packed house for all three performances.
In West Side Story, the modern musical remake of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Tony (played by Brian Hoss) and
Maria (Erin Kofron) are star-crossed lovers whose differing
cultural backgrounds make it impossible for them to be together. While their romance is blooming, the anger between
the rival gangs, the Jets led by Riff (Chris Antolak) and Sharks
led by Bernardo (Nico Jimenez), is worsening. The American
classic has captivated hearts for half a century and still holds
audiences on the edge of theirs seats hoping for a different
outcome with each performance.
The forty-member cast consisted of students from Marmion
Academy and Rosary High School under the artistic direction
of Kristin Voris along with Cindy Zaeske (assistant director/
choreographer), Jim Heatherly (vocals), Steve Thurlow (Orchestra), Jon Smejkal (set design) and student directors: John
York, Elizabeth Healey and Kate Maley.
Marmion supporting cast included Jets: Bubba Weiler (Action), Felipe Rangel (A-rab), Paul Thorton (Baby John),
Zach Stefanski (Snowboy), Brian Thorton (Big Deal), Kurt
Peterson (Diesel), Kevin Garofalo (Gee-Tar), Kelan McDon-

Tinerella to Lead Guerin Prep; Handell Steps in as Dean
Headmaster John Milroy announced that
the Dean of Students Tony Tinerella accepted the position of principal at Guerin
Prep High School in River Grove IL and
retired Aurora Police Officer Rick Handell was selected to assume the Dean of
Students position effective July 1.
Tinerella, a 1984 graduate of Marmion,
has been a staple at Marmion for 19
years. He served in various roles at the
Academy including biology teacher, dormitory prefect, Residential Dean, Head
Freshman Baseball Coach, Head Football
Coach and Dean of Students.
Tony Tinerella ‘84
“He has been a leader in our Campus Ministry program and in
our current school improvement efforts,” said Milroy. “Particularly since becoming Headmaster in 2003, I have found Tony
to be a loyal and trusted assistant and confidant – and a dear
friend. Although I will certainly miss him, I am happy that he
has found this outstanding opportunity at Guerin Prep and I
am confident of his success there.”
Rick Handell joins Marmion having retired from the Aurora
Police Department (APD) in October 2008, after 32 years of
Rick Handell
service to the Aurora community. From
1976 to 2003, Officer Handell served the
APD as a patrol officer and general investigator. In 2003, Officer Handell was
promoted to the rank of Sergeant and
was assigned to a street patrol supervisory position. In 2007, he was promoted
to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned as
the supervising Lieutenant of the Central Services Division, Support Services
Bureau. As a Lieutenant, he managed
3 police sergeants, 3 civilian managers
and approximately 54 civilian personnel
within the various units.
“Handell brings a unique blend of skills, talents and experiences to the Dean of Students position, as well as an understanding of and appreciation for the unique educational experience
that is Marmion Academy,” stated Milroy.
Rick and Karen Handell are the parents of three Marmion
Academy graduates: Bryan (Class of 2000, currently an Officer
with the Aurora Police Department); Nicholas (Class of 2003,
currently a Firefighter with the Aurora Fire Department) and
Timothy (Class of 2008, currently a sophomore at the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign)‰

Larry will be an asset to the Chargers because of his ability to
chase down the quarterback. “He would hit kids and put them
parallel to the ground, said Tony Tinerella in the interview (he
was Larry’s coach while at Marmion). “Defensive coaches love

Lacrosse entered into its first year of the IHSLA and found
itself having incredible success and making school history.
With record numbers of Cadets joining the fastest game on

team.
The Bass Fishing team, coached
by Joe Large ‘97, made school and
State history by qualifying for the
inaugural IHSA Bass Fishing State

its type to be held anywhere in the
U.S. with 119 schools competing in
18 sectional tournaments throughout IL.

March 25.
Following his graduation from Marmion, McCoy
enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the

Students Published in Fr. Peter
Enderlin Writing Competition
Two distinguished Marmion alumni, COL John Fenzel ‘80 and
COL (Ret.) David Fitz-Enz ‘58 have recently published novels.
Eighteen students were selected to have their work published in
the English department’s annual Father Peter Enderlin OSB Writing Competition Literary Magazine. All students were eligible to
submit manuscripts to the competition in the categories of Poetry, Fiction and Essay.
In COL John Fenzel’s The Lazarus Covenant, he navigates the darkest recesses
of the human condition. From a gut
wrenching mass execution witnessed
by two young boys to the discovery
of a secret nuclear weapons laboratory
the story is a thriller.
Fenzel draws on his experience in
the White House, in the Pentagon’s

Those experiences animate his story in

Campaign
MARMION
Campaign Marmion: Honoring the Past by Shaping the Future has surpassed $20 million toward its goal of $25 million.
The Endowment Fund has increased by $4 million (mainly for
student financial aid), the Annual Fund has raised $4.6 million
for on-going operations, and $5.2 million has been spent for
infrastructure work and new playing fields that have changed
the face of the campus. An additional $5.3 million is committed for the renovation of the science labs and the construction
of the new Regole Field House.
This summer Marmion begins work on another priority of
Campaign Marmion–the renovation of the second floor of
Yender Hall (classroom building) into modern biology, chemistry and physic labs and science lecture rooms. Government
mandated asbestos removal took place this summer and next
summer the new labs and lecture rooms will be constructed.
The key to this plan for the new science facilities is flexibility,
that is, the multiple use of these labs and rooms for a variety of
science courses and independent study. A creative use of computer electronics for virtual instruction and experiments is essential. When completed the entire second floor of Yender Hall
will be devoted to science instruction, a 25% increase in space.
The estimated cost for construction and furnishings is $2.6 million. To date $1.9 has been raised.
The future Regole Field House, named for major benefactors
Gertrude and Maurice Regole, Sr., will be built as soon as more
gift funds can be raised. To date $3.5 million is committed toward this $5.5 million project.
The twenty-six member Campaign Steering Committee, chaired
by John Cibulskis ’70, Ray Dalton and Reed O’Malley ’56, has
worked for four years to help the monks and faculty of Marmion
fulfill its mission: a Catholic-Benedictine college preparatory
school for young men, dedicated to spiritual formation, academic excellence and leadership development.
Campaign Marmion is now in its public phase. Over 150 alumni
and parent volunteers are now seeking a wider level of participation. The final general solicitation phase is scheduled for 2010.
Campaign Marmion will end December 31, 2010.
For more information on any of the projects of Campaign Marmion, contact Fr. Charles Reichenbacher OSB ‘59, director of
development at [email protected] or (630) 897-6936,

Endowments - An Essential
By Fr. Charles Reichenbachers OSB ‘59
Director of Development
Endowment funds, that is, investments whose earnings only
are used, are essential for the long-term health of religious and
educational institutions like Marmion Abbey (and its Guatemala mission priory) and Marmion Academy. This is why an
Endowment goal of $5.2 million for Campaign Marmion is a
priority. To date over $4 million has been raised for the endowment, mainly for student financial assistance and Benedictine
seminary and advanced education for the monks.
The Abbey receives income from the labors of its monks and
the Academy from tuition charges, but both of these are never
enough. The tuition for the school year 2008-2009 was $8,800,
but the actual per student cost was over $11,000. Without a
significant endowment income Marmion has to operate with
the uncertainties of annual giving and the “free labor” of the
contributed services of the monks.
Marmion Academy’s Endowment for Academic Excellence
was valued at $9.5 million as of June 30, 2008. It suffered a
17% loss in the last fiscal year. As of June 30, 2009 it stood
at $7.8 million. Although not pleased with a 17% loss, it is
a better record then many investment funds that lost 25% or
more of their value.
In 2008-2009 the Academy’s endowment contributed $418,423
26
to the operational budget, using a 4.5% draw-down, based on
a three-year rolling average. The endowment is projected to
contribute $287,538 in 2009-2010, with a 3% draw-down.
Golden Reunion Gift
Jack Gallagher ’59 of Joliet made a gift
of $50,000 to the Academy in honor
of his class’ 50th Reunion. $25,000
established a Veterans’ Memorial
JROTC Endowment Fund in honor
of all Marmion alumni veterans of
the Armed Forces. The Fund will
help support the operations of the
Academy’s military department.
The other $25,000 went to the Student Emergency Financial Aid Fund
to help deserving students finish
their Marmion education when their
parents are challenged by economic

gift in honor of the 50th Reunion of his class.
Gallagher retired after 43 years of
military and local government service. Jack was the Cadet Colonel and Regimental Commander
for the class of ‘59‰

Memorial Gift Recieved for
New Weight Training Equipment
New weight training equipment for the Athletic Fitness Center was donated in memory of
Len Heinz by his friends and business associates Joe and Sue Pircon of Aurora, parents of
three Marmion students. The Pircons are Life Members of the Abbot Marmion Society. The
Marmion Sports Boosters also contributed generously to this project, both with donations
and volunteer labor. When the new Regole Field House is constructed, this equipment will
be moved to the new Fitness Center in the Field House.

Generous Bequests from
Near and Far
From Aurora
Many members of the Marmion family remember the kind, pastoral care of + Fr. Terence Stanton OSB. Recently, Marmion realized another
demonstration of this through a bequest of more
than $132,000 from the estate of Dorothy Blassage Artlip of Aurora.
Fr. Terence offered the funeral Mass for her
husband +Edward who had been a business
manager at Mooseheart Child City and School. A
nephew, Jerry Blassage ‘60 recalled, “Fr. Terence
had grown up in the same neighborhood as Ed.
He did a lot to personalize the ceremony and
Dorothy was very pleased.” After her husband’s
death, Dorothy continued her relationship with
Marmion by occasionally attending Mass at the
Abbey Church.
In addition to a nephew, Dorothy’s brother,
+Bernard Blassage, was a 1932 graduate of
the former Fox Valley Catholic High School
for Boys (which was renamed Marmion the
following year). Bernard is believed to be the
first Marmion alumnus killed in World War II
and is memorialized on the plaque of Marmion
Alumni Veterans Deceased.
Dorothy was a graduate of the former Madonna
High School. She was a registered nurse and
worked at Mercy Hospital and also in private
practice with Dr. Eugene Balthazar. She made a
number of generous bequests to Catholic schools
and organizations.
From Bainbridge WA
Marmion was also the designated beneficiary of
a bequest from the Estate of John O. Daly ‘50
of Bainbridge Island WA. John and his brother,
+James ‘49, were born and raised in Katchikan
AK. A graduate of Washington University, John
served in the U.S. Army (1954-57) and later in
reserve duty with the Alaska National Guard
(1958-63). In 1965 John became President and
General Manager of Ketchikan Spruce Mills
(KSM), the third generation of the Daly family to
lead the mill. It was sold to Georgia Pacific. He
later served as Senior Vice President of Kodiak
Lumber Mills in Anchorage.
John was active in political and civic affairs in
Alaska. He served as Campaign Manager for
Senator Frank Kurkowski (1980-93) and in 1991
moved to Washington DC to be the Senator’s
Executive Assistant. While on the East Coast, he
developed a love for soaring. In 1994, he moved
to Bainbridge Island and enjoyed a decade of
active soaring.
John’s estate bequest of $25,000 has been designated for capital improvements on the Marmion
campus.
