Mailed Bi-Monthly
BNC SHOWCASE 2015
On Thursday, September 10, 2015, BNC Las Vegas
Chapter will kick off the 2015-2016 season with its
annual Showcase luncheon. The event will be at
Maggione’s in the Fashion Show Mall, 3200 S. Las
Vegas Blvd. The luncheon will start at 11:30 and
will be open seating with tables of 10. If you want
to reserve a table, please send all ten checks with
your reservations in the same envelope to Marilyn
Shocket. The menu will consist of Stuffed Mushrooms, Caesar Salad, Spaghetti with Marinara
Sauce, Chicken Parmesan, Cookies, Coffee, Tea,
and Sodas.
Due to the constraint of the restaurant, we are
asking you to mail your reservations early. The
large room at Maggione’s holds 60 people – no
more. They can open the room next door but
require a financial guarantee of more than 60
guests. We cannot do that unless we have cash in
hand. We will guarantee the first 60 reservations
from our members and place any others on a
waiting list. As soon as we have more than 60
reservations, we will ask Maggione’s to open the
room next door. They will accommodate us if
they have not already reserved that room for another party. THE DEADLINE FOR RESERVATIONS IS
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1.
PARKING: Follow the signs to the restaurant in
the underground parking lot. There is an elevator
tucked into the corner which will take you into
Maggione’s. If you cannot find the elevator, use
the red parking exit into the mall and go to the
second floor. The restaurant faces Las Vegas Blvd.
For further information, call Sheila Schwartz 702233-2139 or Ronnie Sander 702-749-6974.

OUR SPEAKER WILL BE BEVERLY WASHBURN who
currently resides in Las Vegas and writes a column
for the Vegas Voice. She has also written a riveting autobiography titled Reel Tears: The Beverly Washburn Story.
Beverly appeared as a young girl in NBC’s The
Loretta Young Show and as an older teenager in
Loretta Young’s CBS family drama. She had a role
in Old Yeller and Shane. Beverly had guest appearances on various shows such as Father Knows
Best, Fury, Leave It to Beaver, and Star Trek. She
was known for being able to cry on cue. This
saved the studios many re-takes.
She was able to transition from child star to adult
performer which is very rare. Beverly shared the
screen with various male leads such as George
Reeves in Superman, Kirk Douglas, and Jack Benny.

Marshall and I are looking forward to a
wonderful year for Brandeis Las Vegas.
It will start out with our Showcase luncheon on Tuesday, September 10, 2015 at

of Pediatrics and at the Richmond
Children’s Hospital. I have been active
in ORT, Hadassah and Na’amat and have
held board positions in the National

We thought it would be informative for
all of you to know a little about your CoPresidents. Marshall and I are both
from Baltimore, Maryland. We met as
teenagers and have been married for
almost 49 years. We have two children
and three grandchildren. Marshall is a

academic career instead of full time
private practice. He was a Dean at the
Medical College of Virginia School of
Dentistry in Richmond for many years
before being recruited by UNLV in 2003
to be a Dean here and help start the
new dental school. Marshall graduated
from both pharmacy school and dental
school at the University of Maryland in
Baltimore and completed his Pediatric
residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital
and the University of Maryland. He was
Vice President of the American Dental

years and held many offices for the
American Dental Association.

Weiner-Kaplow walked to the city square, where he began
to grasp the enormity of the devastation. Where buildings,
temples and monuments had stood the day before, there
were just giant piles of debris.

MANY THANKS TO ALL EVENT CHAIRS
I am not a particularly good “thank you” person.
Our committees work very hard and I don’t always acknowledge it. I deeply appreciate all the
work that goes into making this chapter a success.
I know they are doing this work not for me but for
the organization and that may be why I am often
tardy in thanking the remarkable committees we
have. There are so many that have worked so
hard but I am going to limit myself to the event
chairs this year.
Jo-Ann Geller was Vice President of Events. Nothing slipped by her—events have been planned to
the last detail. She has coordinated and organized committees as well as participated on every
event committee. Many of the ideas were hers
for all of our events. She chaired the very successful University on Wheels in January at Canyon
Gate Country Club and she chaired the Games
Day event. My comment to her after University
on Wheels was “You can’t top this next year.”
She seems to do it so easily but it is very hard
work.
Evelyn Brunner and Gay Lynne Kegan co-chaired
Showcase. A very nice event at the beautiful
Bear’ Best Golf Club. Speaker Sondra Cosgrove
discussed the important upcoming legislative and
ballot issues. A good time was had by all.
Margy Brownstein and Gay Lynne Kegan collected
toys for Jewish Family Service Agency Hanukkah
toy drive. I was struck by how important it was
for them to collect toys for children. Margy, always generous with her beautiful home, was kind
enough to host the party at her house. It was an
event filled with good food and friends.
Thank you Sandee Feldman for opening your
home to the Henderson members. I know you
spent all day on those delicious appetizers you
served and the Sangria was a real treat. Our Henderson members were so pleased with the event.
Installation was chaired by Denise Needleman
and Florence Frost with a delightful and enjoyable
installation luncheon at Spiedini’s Ristaurante.
Spiedini’s is always a winner and Jackie Robinson’s poetry is a joy.

ON THE TOWN
A Look to a New Season
We are pleased to announce that Sandy Greene and
Bonny Cohen have joined the On the Town team. They
will bring a new vision to our outings and learning possibilities for this Interest Group. Their younger legs and
eagerness to expand our On the Town activities will be
most appreciated.
Division of Labor
Each of these women will take on one or two outings on
their own. When members of our wonderful chapter
take on small tasks it keeps our outlook fresh and productive and gives them a feeling of ownership in our activities. You should all join in and take on small jobs in
this new season.
Joint Venture
Bonny, Sandy and I will be working out an exciting first
adventure.
First, we will be given a tour of the new Linq Hotel. Then
we will move on to the Linq Promenade which is loaded
with shops, restaurants and even, for those who have
the courage (and the money), there is a ride on the High
Roller, the world’s tallest observation tower. It offers
fantastic views of our beautiful city. We will probably
get a very special fee as locals.
Outings under Consideration
Bonny Cohen will work on an outing to the
Mirage to see the dolphins in their natural
environment and see them show off for their
caretakers and guests, feats of their dexterity. Then on to see the white tigers who
worked with Siegfried and Roy. As is always the case, the
group will go on to lunch “on their own” in one of the
Mirage’s many restaurants.
Bonny, new to this area, brings back past events that we
all enjoyed and would benefit by revisiting. She offered to work on a visit to
the Mormon Fort which takes us back
to the beginnings of settlers in this
area. Nearby is the Museum of Natural
History, which this
group has never visited.
Sandy will take on some other
outings such as some of those mentioned below. She expressed her willingness to take on
events that will ease the burden on Arlene Krane who
has been doing it on her own for about ten years.
We will try to work out a visit to the Cordon Bleu Culinary School with a tour of the facility and a luncheon in
their adjoining restaurant as always, “on our own.”
We will be looking forward to whatever new exhibit will
be put on at the Gallery of Fine Art so that we can learn
about different types of art presented there from the
excellent docent assigned by the curator.
Other activities, which our
team will develop, may come
from YOU, the members of
Brandeis, who hear of, or
participate in other interesting activities.
All proceeds from the “On the Town” activities will be
dedicated to our Las Vegas Chapter Scholarship Fund.
This will enable the fund to grown over the years so that
additional scholarships will be available to a student
from Southern Nevada.

STUDY GROUPS
THE STUDY GUIDE BOOKLET
By now you will have received your Study Guide Booklets for the 2015-2016 Season. Please read
carefully the descriptions of the courses, and select the courses which interest you most (your $40
fee includes all courses with some exceptions noted in the description). For example, if you are taking Rabbi Schanowitz’s course your book fee ($36) must be included with your registration fee. Now,
take out the calendar and fill in your selections. Then on your registration sheet assign a number to
each course you have selected in order of preference (this is explained in the booklet.) Send your
registration form along with your $40 fee to: Margret Ofek, 10895 Iris Canyon Lane, Las Vegas, NV
89135.
If you have not yet renewed your membership, please mail your membership of $60, payable to BNC
to: Sue Solomon, 10412 Leafgold Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89134
If you have not received a Study Guide Booklet, please contact
Gay Lynne Kegan at: 702-445-3711
A New Approach
This year we will be experimenting with some evening and weekend courses, some one semester
courses and some that meet for just three to five sessions. This type of scheduling will move us into
the future of our BNC chapter. We will appreciate your reactions throughout the year.
Some New Courses
Some of the new courses (but not all) include:
Joanne Gilbert will facilitate the TED Course which consists of filmed lectures by prominent scholars
and world leaders. There will be open discussion after the viewing.
Leslie Schoenberg (a new member of the Study Group Leadership Team) will bring in speakers from
the Mayor on down who are involved in Those who Make our City Work, including Aging, Fire and
Police Departments including the K-9 unit.
Barbara Chozahinoff will facilitate a course in Classic Foreign Films such as “Two Women”, Ingmar
Bergman films and “Breathless”.
Our new Co-President Marshall Brownstein will offer a course on Documentaries.
Edith Einhorn will offer two four-session courses Using Your Android Smart Phone and Photography:
From Camera and Smart Phone to Computer and more.
(cont. on Page 16)
15
( Study Groups Cont. from Page 15)
Ann Mandell and Rivka Wolf are introducing a course on a Potpourri of Jewish Films for the
East Side.
Edie Edwards will facilitate a Mah Jongg course again but this time the class will meet weekly
for six weeks to help people get ready for a chance to play.
Terri Hirschfield will continue her You and Your I Phone as she helps us discover the myriad
uses of the I Phone.
Ruth Alexman will “slow down” and offer just three courses: Ashkenazi Jews III, Askenazi Jews
II on the East Side and Women in the Bible I at her home.
Gay Lynne Keagan will facilitate a course on Genealogy for a small group who want to pursue
their family history.
Debra Feldman will facilitate a course where members will go on outings to 3 or 4 Local Little
Theaters to enjoy plays on the weekend.
Jo-Ann Geller will lead a class on Hollywood’s Jewish Themed Movies which are based on the
influence of Jewish culture and elusive sensibility that are hard to define and yet feel so familiar to Jew and non-Jew alike.
Gale Labovitz and her crew will take turns teaching their group how to create various courses
of delicious meals.
The Study Guide Book Leadership Team
Gay Lynne Kegan will be the principal person to lay out the Study Guide Booklet. Leslie
Schoenberg is responsible for editing the “blurbs” describing the courses. Margret and Hillel
Ofek are the people who set up the registration process and compile your registration sheets
into the class lists that are so important to the facilitators. Arlene Krane and Gay Lynne Kegan
are responsible for coaxing members to come up with new courses and writing up the “blurbs”
that describe their course.
