Boat Harbour: Local firm wins
Stage One works contract.
Work is officially set to start on
Stage 1 of the Shell Cove Boat
Harbour following the appointment
of local firm Coastwide Civil to the first
stage of the $150 million project.
Stage 1, the first of 4 major contracts
to be issued for the $600 million Boat
Harbour precinct development, will
commence in January 2013. This will
include the placement of environmental
controls, followed by the installation of a
coffer dam in the beach zone to enable
construction of the breakwater. Plus,
sorting and processing of excavated
material for re-use plus part excavation
of the huge harbour basin.
Overall the Stage 1 works are expected
to last around 12 months.
The commencement of Stage 1
represents a true milestone in the Boat
Harbour’s development following years
of planning and preparation work.
The company selected for the project,
Coastwide Civil, is a local firm with
extensive experience in construction
of similar large marine projects both
locally and internationally. Some of
the significant projects that Coastwide
have built include the Lake Illawarra
Breakwater, Tug Boat facility at
Port Kembla and boat harbours in Lihir,
Townsville and New Guinea.
Finally, on behalf of all residents of
Shell Cove, and indeed the entire coastal
community, we offer congratulations
to the team at Coastwide Civil on their
appointment to this project, which
represents one of the most significant
infrastructure projects
for the South Coast
in decades, and a
world class project
in its own right.

On August 24th
the Shell Cove
Boat Harbour was

The award recognised the thoughtful
process underpinning Australand and
Shellharbour City Council’s concept

Precinct, while also recognising their ability
to deliver a world class community.
The UDIA NSW Austral Bricks Awards

the ACT.
Australand NSW General Manager
Residential Division Nigel Edgar said
Shell Cove is a prime example of the
private and public sectors working
together as partners to visualise and
develop masterplanned communities
that respond to natural and
environmental frameworks.
“We are honoured that our concept
design for the Shell Cove Boat Harbour
has been recognised with such a
prestigious award.” said Mr Edgar.
“Residents, too, should be both proud
and pleased to know that their home is
now rightly recognised as an outstanding
award-winning residential community,
one of the finest in Australia.”

Construction
The construction of the Boat Harbour

one million cubic metres and will
incorporate:
• Breakwater and groyne to provide
safe access to the ocean
• Edge treatments constructed from
pre-cast concrete sections and rock
revetment
• Timber boardwalks and
promenades
• 300 floating pontoon berths
The company selected for the project,
Coastwide Civil, is a local firm with
extensive experience in construction
of similar large marine projects both
locally and internationally. Some
of the significant projects that
Coastwide have built include the Lake
Illawarra Breakwater, Tug Boat facility
at Port Kembla and boat harbours in

More than $25 million has been
spent to date on studies, approvals,
relocation and remediation of an old
waste tip on the site, as well as the
purchase of rock for the breakwaters
and Boat Harbour edges.
In excess of 300,000 tonnes of hard
rock will be utilised in the construction
of breakwaters and the harbour
edges. This material is being sourced
from local quarries and from re-used
material from the site excavation itself.

authorities to ensure the coastal and
offshore environment is not impacted
in a negative manner.
A compensatory wetland with salt
marsh zones has been constructed
at the nearby Myimbarr Community
Park to offset any habitat loss at
the boat harbour site. This wetland,
which comprises 12.4 hectares of
wetland and saltmarsh, involved
the planting of 300,000 endemic
waterplants and is believed to be the
largest ‘constructed’ wetland system
on the east coast of Australia.
The project won a CASE Earth Works
Award for its leading environmental
management practices.
Plan of Shell Cove Harbour compared to Darling Harbour
To date, almost 200,000 tonnes of
rock has been stockpiled in readiness
for construction works.
When complete, the Boat Harbour
will boast a water surface of
approximately 12 hectares, which
represents an area approximately 30%
larger than Darling Harbour.
Environment Guidelines a Top Priority
Planning for the construction works
has involved significant assessment
and refinement to ensure any
environmental risks are significantly
reduced. This has included the
preparation of Environmental
Management Plans in consultation
with the Environment Protection
Authority and other key statutory
The impact on Aboriginal heritage
has also been closely considered in
consultation with the local Aboriginal
community. In particular, middens
discovered in the proximity of the site
will be preserved and protected with
specific heritage protection plans
formulated in consultation with the local
Aboriginal community and the NSW
Office of Environment and Heritage.
Upon completion, the new Boat
Harbour, will transform Shell
Cove into one of Australia’s most
desirable residential communities
and become a major lifestyle
destination in its own right.

“To see an actual, living breathing
community take shape is a really

lifestyle destinations… something that
will really set it head and shoulders
above other residential communities.
It will be the difference.”

the lifestyle, “I love the daily challenges.
I love dealing with people and the
friendly environment here at Shell Cove
makes work a pleasure. I also love
surfing at ‘The Farm’. Along with Shell
Cove and family, it’s my passion!”
