During the month of April the Recycling coalition held a Coloring Contest at the Manila Elementary School. The winners are as follows: K‐ Dani Wolford(not pictured), 1st‐ Cheyenne Brown , 2nd – Katie Howell, 3rd – Saige Walters, 4th – Holden Martineau, 5th – Shawna Roundy, 6th – McKayla Wolford Every winner was presented a certificate for a Sundae, provided by the Drive‐In, and a Free Summer Pool Pass, provided by the Flaming Gorge KOA! Also, during the month of April the 8th grade class is the winner of the Paper Drive. They collected 731 lbs. worth of paper. They are pictured below enjoying their Pizza Party provided by the Villa, drinks provided by Flaming Gorge Market and Cinnamon Buns provided by Kathy Roundy of the Recycling Coalition. Manila FFA Chapter Holds Annual Banquet
The Manila FFA Chapter held it’s annual parent-member banquet on May 17, 2011, at Manila High
School. Members were recognized for outstanding achievements through out the year.
Many members were awarded degrees for the year. Receiving the Greenhand FFA Degree were Alex
Brady, Colten Ferrin, Steele Handy, Samantha Hughes, Ashlee Hullinger, Ben Rose and Tierra Williams. Chapter
FFA Degree recipients included Rustyn Burnside, Emily Catron, McKayla Gonder, Tyler Grow, Darellyn Hughes,
Erica Lopez, AJ Olsen, Janell Reed and Aubree Thomas.
Speaking awards were presented to Jaris Baker, in Extemporaneous Public Speaking, and McKayla Gonder, in Prepared Public Speaking. Ashlee Hullinger and Ben Rose were also presented plaques for Creed Speaking for winning the chapter and Area Contests. The parliamentary procedure team composed of Wyatt Potter,
Cheyenne Reid, Lacie Potter, Jesse Lamb, Emily Catron and Janell Reed was also recognized.
Thirteen members who won state proficiency awards at the State FFA Convention were recognized. Alle
Muir, Luke Slagowski, Jessica Gosar, Steele Muggelberg, Justin Olsen, Jared Reed, Monte Anderson, Jaris
Baker, Jordynn Hewitt, Kalob Hullinger, Marty Lamb, Wyatt Potter and Cheyenne Reid were all presented with
their proficiency plaques and a check for $250. Recognized as the 1st Runner-up to Star State Greenhand in Agribusiness was Emily Catron. McKayla Gonder was presented a plaque and check for the Second Runner-up to the
Star Greenhand in AgriScience. Nearly $4000 was presented to chapter members.
Eight members of the chapter were raised to the State FFA Degree at the state convention. These members receiving their certificates were Monte Anderson, Jaris Baker, Jordynn Hewitt, Kalob Hullinger, Marty Lamb,
Cody McKee, Wyatt Potter and Cheyenne Reid. Seven members will receive the American FFA Degree in October, Jessica Gosar, Steele Muggelberg, Alle Muir, Justin Olsen, Jared Reed, Luke Slagowski and Colter Smith.
Honorary Chapter FFA Degrees were awarded to Syndee Johnson and Terry and Roxann Reid.
Numerous certificates were presented honoring accomplishments for participation in career development
events, highlighted by the pin presentation to the State Champion Livestock Judging contest participants. Jared
Briggs, AJ Olsen, Lacie Potter and Aubree Thomas won the state contest and will participate in the national contest in October. Also receiving certificates was the State Champion Land Judging Team that competed at the National Contest in Oklahoma City. Emily Catron, McKayla Gonder, AJ Olsen, Janell Reed and Aubree Thomas
made up this team. The evening also included a pin presentation to Cheyenne Reid who was second high individual in the Food Science Contest. The Dekalb Award for the Outstanding Senior was presented to Jaris Baker.
Over $200 was also awarded to members in the chapter scholarship program.
Completing the evening activities was the introduction of the new chapter officers for the coming year.

ICS-402 Incident Command Overview for Executives and Senior Officials
Daggett County Emergency Management is pleased to announce the offering of the ISC-402 class. The class will
be held on June 13th, 2011 10:00 a.m. at the Daggett County Courthouse Commission Room. This course is an
orientation for executives, elected officials, and policy makers. It provides a basic understanding of the National
Incident Management System (NIMS), ICS, Unified and Area Command, and Multi-agency coordination to those
persons responsible for setting or implementing policy, but who normally are not part of the on-scene ICS organization. The module also discusses responsibilities and information transfer between agency executives and incident commanders. SWETT RANCH MONITORING
Monday, June 6th, 2011 Beginning at 10:00 am
A utilization cage will be set up on Pasture 2 of the Swett meadows again this year. Data has been collected from this monitoring practice since 2005. There will be volumes of photos and 6 years of data available for your review.
A Land EKG transect line will be set up again, also. In depth data was collected from this transect line
in 2007 and the intent of this year’s review is to determine what progress has been made in restoring the
Swett meadows to a quality state of vegetation.
Photo monitoring of Pastures 1 and 3 will be available as well as photos of the utilization cage and transect line listed above.
Meet at the Swett Ranch at 10:00am.
A light lunch will be served.
Anyone interested in learning more about these monitoring practices is welcome to attend.

My name is Paul Decker, I came to Manila, Utah on May 16, 2011, riding a horse and leading 5 pack
mules. Upon arrival I stopped at the Courthouse where I asked and was given permission to keep my stock
at the rodeo grounds. It has been raining and cold since I arrived. I started asking around trying to locate
hay for my stock, to not much avail at first. About 4:00 PM that afternoon I got a call on my cell phone
from Deputy Sheriff Ray Rubel, asking me to dinner, after dinner he took me up the road to Ned Brady’s
place. He was in the process of loading a partial round bale of hay on his truck, he hauled it down to the
rodeo arena and unloaded it for me. The hospitality that I have received has not stopped yet. I have been
given hay, feed and I have been lodged and taken care of like royalty.
I Just want to Thank the fine people of Manila, Utah Y’all are of the finest cut. God Bless you and thank
you for everything.

Flaming Gorge Chamber News
The Chamber is working on a new magazine, for Flaming Gorge. It will have listings of all Chamber business’s, so make
sure you have paid your member ship dues so we can include you and your business in the magazine. This magazine will
be one of our main sources of information that we hand out or mail out to anyone interested in visiting our area. It will
have listing of business locations, email’s, website addresses, phone numbers along with pictures and articles of the Flaming Gorge Area. In May alone, the Chamber has had over 50 requests for information about our area. Brochures are
sent to them, along with coupons for lodging and dining. The magazine will be sent in every mailing once it is complete.
Our next Chamber meeting will be June 9th, 7:00 P.M. at Red Canyon Lodge. We encourage everyone to come. Also the
new website is a few weeks away from being completed. If you would like to contact the Chamber you may do so at,

Join the Daggett TEA Party
We are seeking members of the community to serve as watch dogs on Elected Officials for local, State and Federal positions.
The goal is to hold elected politicians to their campaign promises and reduce spending in Daggett County, the
State of Utah and Federal Government.
We are looking for Daggett County Citizens to attend local City and County Commission Meetings to show
support for the elected officials and give input on less spending and reduce wasteful misuse of local tax dollars, also
support smaller government control and support personal responsibility. The TEA party supports conservative spending in Daggett County and expects the leaders and employee’s to follow City and County Policies.

Kay R “Suds” Sutherland passed away at Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT on April 20,
2011. He was 75. He will be greatly missed by his family, Arla & Larraine both former wives, his
daughters Tammi and Christine, Brother Jim Sutherland of Roy, Utah, Grand Daughters Whitney, Taylor and Denise along with grand children, several nieces and nephews. Doe misses her
fish’n and wood’n partner.
Donald Lee Behunin, 79, of McKinnon, Wyoming died Wednesday, April 12, 2011, at his home. A Lifelong McKinnon resident, he dies following at brief illness. He was born January 10, 1932, in Green River,
the son of Orson Nathan Behunin and Christena Isabella Slagowski. He attended schools in Burnt Fork,
McKinnon and Green River. He was a 1950 graduate of Green River High School and attended Brigham
Young University. He married Helen Mary Harvey on October 13, 1956. They had four daughters. His
wife died in and auto accident in 1980. He married Barbara Kaye Nielsen in 1991 in Lyman, Wyoming.
Mr. Behunin was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean war. He served from 1950 to 53 and retired as a staff
sergeant. He was a self-employed rancher. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sweetwater County Fair board
and Weed and Pest. He was the secretary of Cedar Mountain grazing. His interests included Hunting, golfing, boating, spending time with his family and life on the ranch. Survivors include his mother, Christena Slagowksi Behunin ; wife, Kay Behunin;
four draughts, Brenda Douglas and husband Steve Valree Muir and husband Rowdy, all of McKinnon; Wendy Christensen and
husband Bruce of Mtn. View and Christy Behunin of Vernal, brother, Karl Behunion and wife Deanna of Fort Bridger; two
sisters, Myrna Lupher and husband Jim of Mtn. View and Geri Lofton and husband Lloyd of Green river, 14 grandchildren; 23
great grand children; several cousins, nephews and nieces; and three uncles. Funeral Service were conducted Saturday, April

Warning—Equine Herpes Virus Type 1 Outbreak, Utah
Wednesday, May 25, 2011 05:00 p.m. MDT Update to the Equine Herpes Virus Type 1 Outbreak in Utah As of 5:00 p.m. Wednesday May 25, 2011. There have been no new confirmed cases or suspect cases reported by Utah veterinarians today. All suspect and confirmed cases will continue to be under quarantine for 28 days following the ces‐
sation of neurological symptoms. There are still only four (4) quarantined private facilities (Box Elder, Davis, Kane, and Utah counties) with a total of seven (7) confirmed cases and eight (8) suspect cases on these premises. To date, two of the Utah cases were humanely eutha‐
nized after going down and being unable to return to their feet. Important points that should be remembered and that have occurred with this incident:  Horse owners that are considering attending any equine competitive or congregation events in Utah are encouraged to contact the event sponsor to see if the event is going to take place at the scheduled time and place. Currently, no events have been cancelled under state direction.  Signs associated with this disease include fever, decreased coordination, nasal discharge, urine dribbling, loss of tail tone, hind limb weakness, leaning against a wall or fence to maintain balance, lethargy, and the inability to rise.  Horse owners should watch their horses carefully and call their veterinarian immediately if any abnormal signs are observed.  Horses that attended the Ogden, UT event or have been in contact with horses that attended the event should be isolated and a minimum of two temperatures taken and recorded per day on each horse.  If there is any increase in body temperature or abnormal clinical signs in any of your horses, notify your veterinarian immediately.  We are not recommending the cancellation of any events involving horses, mules, and/or burros at this time.  Utah has not changed its importation requirements for horses, mules, and/or burros entering the state.  The equine herpesvirus, called EHV‐1, disease is not transmissible to humans or other animals other than equine (horses, mules, burros) or camelid (llamas, alpacas, camels) species.  The virus is contagious between camelids and horses and cannot be spread to other animals such as cats and dogs. EHV‐1 may cause only mild, flu‐like illness in many cases, but some horses may become seriously ill with respi‐
ratory or neurologic disease. EHV‐1 may be fatal in some severely infected horses. The most common way for EHV‐1 to spread is by direct horse‐to‐horse contact. The virus also can spread through the air, contaminated equip‐
ment, clothing and hands. Daggett County Commissioner Jerry Steglich recommends the following: 1. Leave your horses at home for the next 30 days. 2. Recycling Coalition
The Recycling Coalition had a busy month working with the schools and many residents interested in keeping materials out of the landfill. The first bin has been placed behind the courthouse and additional bins are under construction. The current bin does not require sorting, but the bins under construction will require sorting. Please clean all
jugs, bottles and cans before placing in the bins. Thanks for all you are doing to preserve and conserve space in the
landfill. Listed below are some additional details of types of materials that can be recycled locally and where.
Corrugated Cardboard: should have a ripple between two layers of cardboard, this cardboard should be trash free,
packing free and wax free, broke down flat to insert into the bin provided. Brown packing paper is acceptable in with

Newsprint/Magazines/Phone Books: these can be put in the same container as the magazines provide fiber to the

THE FOX FAMILY FISHING EVENT
Event Rules
All Utah State Division of Wildlife Resources rules apply to fishing. You must have a valid fishing license and must obey all relevant regulations and bag limits at the designated water. The DWR also asks
that you clean, drain, and dry your boat after each fishing trip.

There is no age limit.

All members of the family are encouraged to participate!

600 rainbow trout (between the three waters) will be tagged with a special numbered DWR tag. Tags are
either blue, green, or yellow and are denoted with the word “WIN” followed by a number.

The fish will be placed in Steinaker Reservoir, Moose Pond and Big Sandwash Reservoir.

The contest begins May 28th and will end Aug 17, 2011 at noon.

If you catch a fish with the special tag, you may take it to the Steinaker State Park Gate, the DWR office
in Vernal, or to the Flaming Gorge Ranger District Office in Manila to verify (there may also be additional businesses added as verification points).

The first 50 to catch a tagged fish will receive a smaller prize (t-shirts, dinners, etc).

All people who caught a tagged fish will be entered in the final drawing for over $3500 in grand prizes.
You must be present to win these prizes (prizes to be determined). The drawing will be held August 18th
at 5 pm at the Alive After Five finale at Western Park in Vernal.

The contest is free of charge.

Area Scholarship Recipients Named
Manila High School held the annual awards assembly on May 24, 2011. Among the many awards received by students were the scholarships awarded by local organizations. The $500 Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce
Scholarship was presented to Jaris Baker. The Bridger Valley Electric Scholarship was awarded to Wyatt Potter,

Daggett County Maintenance is accepting applications for the
SEASONAL position of:
Mosquito Position
Qualifications & Requirements:
At least 18 years of age
Current Driver License with good driving record
Must be able to pass a criminal background check
Ability to walk long distances and navigate rough terrain
Ability to follow directions
Ability to work independently
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Duties will include (but not limited to):
Pass tests to become a certified Pesticide Applicator for mosquitoes
Drive ATV or truck to locations needing pest treatments or to collect mosquito samples
Deploy and retrieve Mosquito traps
Document results of trapping activities and send samples to State of Utah
Follow up on resident complaints and inspect their areas for larvae and mosquitoes
Apply larvicide or adulticide as needed to prevent build up of adult mosquitoes
Document all activities and complete all assigned paperwork
Attend UMAA meetings as possible and become educated on best practices for mosquito
abatement
Attend Mosquito Abatement District Board meetings and report on activities and needs
Schedule and work with aerial sprayers to ensure successful applications.
Perform all other duties as assigned
Starting wage will be $10 - $12 an hour, based on qualifications and experience.
A Daggett County Application must be received by the Daggett County Human
Resource Office no later than 5:00 p.m. on June 8, 2011.
Oral Interviews will be conducted.

Hopefully, this event will take place in the future. The first bin has been placed behind the courthouse and additional bins are under
construction. The current bin does not require sorting, but the bins under construction will require sorting. Please clean all jugs, bottles and cans before placing in the
bins. Thanks for all you are doing to preserve and conserve space in the landfill.






