The barn is completed and the picture shows the group responsible for the project. Fair
Board member Scot Horner spearheaded the job, Fair Board President Jon Baltes, Sarah
DeBour, the Hampton/Dumont CAL FFA Advisor, Kaye Vanness, from the Franklin County
Community Foundation and Bryce Dorenkamp, Dorenkamp Custom Construction, Sheffield.
The Franklin Farm Hands exhibit
T
he Franklin Farm Hands
exhibit at last years fair was
a huge success and it has
grown for 2014. The CAL
and Hampton-Dumont FFA Tall Corn
Chapter was the recipient of a grant
from the Franklin County Community
Foundation to put another building at
the site. The fair board decided to pool
resources so they could use the building
for storage. Scot Horner headed the
project for the fair board and Bryce
Dorenkamp,
Dorenkamp
Custom
Construction, Sheffield, built the
building and also made a donation.
The activity is open Wednesday
through Saturday from 1-6 p.m. for
children up to 12 years old. It is a handson exhibit that will help teach kids the
importance of agriculture in their daily
lives. Kids go through an agricultural
progression from farm to store. The
display also includes farm animals that
can be kept in the new barn.

Children have a natural curiosity, and after going through the Franklin Farm Hands exhibit,
be sure to show them how food was produced decades ago with a visit to Grandpa’s Farm.

Grand
Marshall
T
he Franklin County
Fair
Board has
named Dr. Richard
Flickenger posthumous grand marshal of the Franklin County Fair
Parade. Flickenger,
56, passed away on
October 29, 2013. He owned the Hampton Veterinary Clinic and served as the official Fair Veterinarian for 25 years.
“We asked Flick to be the grand marshal
several times,” said Jon Baltes, President of
the Franklin County Fair Board. “But he never
wanted the attention. Flick loved the fair. He was
always here helping as a volunteer or doing his
job. We miss him. The fair won’t be the same
without him.”

A
WEDNESDAY SWINE SHOW
virus that has killed up to 7
million U.S. pigs has resulted
in changes for the county fair
swine show.
Porcine epidemic diarrhea, known as
PEDv, is a virus that researches believe
travels from pig to pig by people and machinery tracking manure. The epidemic
has reduced pork supplies, raising meat
costs at the grocery store and giving
producers nightmares about losing baby
pigs.
Upon recommendation from the State
Veterinarian and Dr. Zach Vosburg,
Franklin County Fair Vet, the Franklin
County Fair Board Livestock committee
has implemented changes in the Swine
Department for the 2014 fair.
As a precaution the Open Class Feeder Pig Show will be cancelled with the
hopes that it can be again scheduled in
the future.
The Swine Show will be moved to
Wednesday, July 16 at 5:00 p.m. Swine
will be removed from the fairgrounds
on Wednesday, July 16 from 11:00
p.m. – 1:00 a.m. or Thursday, July 17
from 6:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m.
Arrangements for removal is to be
made by the exhibitor with the Livestock
Committee. The committee is headed by
Rodney Peters, chairman, and members
Casey Staley, Greg Counsell and Tanner
Brass.

The Franklin County
Fair is proud to bring its
largest animal exhibit ever to the 155th
Franklin County Fair.
ELEPHANT ENCOUNTER is an educational and entertaining experience for
the entire family, that gives you a close
and personal encounter with the worlds
largest animals.
There are only two species of elephants left, African and Indian, and one
of each will reside on the north side of
the fairgrounds during fair week, Cora
is a 49-year-old Asian elephant, weighing in at 9000 pounds and Shannon, a
27-year-old African elephant, weighs in
at 4500.
These are not circus elephants, nor are
they zoo elephants. They are family elephants and have been owned and cared
for by the Morris family for virtually
their entire lives. The Morris family represent 3 generations who have dedicated
their entire lives to the study and care of
these elephants.
Nationally acclaimed elephant trainer
Bill Morris, and his wife, Cindy, own
Elephant Encounter and he is the master of ceremonies for the show. He said
the elephants could live to be 70 or 80
years old or even over 100. They have
had Cora since she was 2 years old and
Shannon since she was 18 months.
Elephant Encounter is based in Tampa, Fla., where the Morrises have their
home and where Cora and Shannon have
8 acres to roam and a pool where they
can swim and throw dirt and water.
This could change the way you think
and feel about these magnificent creatures forever. Did you know they have
six sets of teeth and have four sets in
their mouth at any one time, or that
their wrinkles are part of their cooling
system? Did you know the ears of each
species is shaped like the continent from
which they originate?
Elephant Encounter is a free show
staged daily and also features elephant
rides.
Don’t miss this unforgettable experience at our fair!

PRCA RODEO
T
he Franklin County Fair was saddened to
hear of the passing of rodeo legend Bob
Barnes, last November. Bob and his family have been filling the grandstand at the
Franklin County Fair with rodeo fans for many years.
A Cherokee, Iowa, native, Barnes was a member
of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and
in 1984 was named the PRCA Stock Contractor of the
Year. Bob also served on the National Finals Rodeo
Committee in 1985, during which time the NFR was
moved to Las Vegas, and he also served on the PRCA
Stock Contractors Executive Council and the PRCA
Board of Directors.
In 1994, Bob was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall
of Fame in Colorado Springs, and the Cowboy Hall of
Fame in Oklahoma City honored him with an induction
in 2010.
Bob and his wife Donita, and their children - Mitzi,
Marty, and John - built Barnes/MJM Rodeo Company
into one of the nation’s most popular and respected
PRCA Rodeo Stock Contractors and Producers, annually traveling the United States to produce first-class
PRCA Rodeos. Bob was preceded in death by Donita
in 2011.
To this day, the members of the Barnes family continue their dedication to the sport of rodeo.
With you every step of the way!
Pro cowboys will saddle up Wednesday, July 17, to
claim prize money and circuit points at the Barnes
PRCA Rodeo. Rodeo events will include saddle
and bareback bronc riding, calf roping, women’s
professional barrel racing, steer wrestling and bull
riding.

2013 Honorary rodeo clowns for the wooly ride.
S
2013 wooly ride winners
cott Grover will ride into the fair arena on
Wednesday as the PRCA Announcer for this
years rodeo. It’s a return engagement for Grover who was last years announcer. The cowboy was born in the small town of Morrowville, Kansas,
Home of the World’s First Bulldozer. He grew up in a
rural area deep in farming, but not to a rodeo family. He
was hooked after going to his first rodeo. Scott did not
even have a horse until he was 12 years old. But that
didn’t matter, from the time that he saw his first rodeo,
he played rodeo, read about rodeo, and dreamed about
rodeo.
In 1996, after graduating from high school he attended Southeast Community College in Beatrice, Nebraska
where he majored in Agribusiness and was a member of
the rodeo club. It was while attending SCC that he “fell”
into announcing rodeos. He and his roommates would
help out at a local arena on the weekends during youth
rodeos. One Saturday night the producer called about
11:00 pm and said that her announcer couldn’t make
it for the Sunday performance, would Scott step in?
Two months later he was announcing one of the biggest
sanctioned bull ridings that he had ever seen, and has
stayed busy traveling the country ever since.
After graduation from SCC, Scott transferred to Kansas State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural. Before moving to Ottawa County
Bull fighters for the rodeo will be
Miles Jones, from Hickory, North
Carolina, and Lucas Littles, from
Carthage, Mo. The photo shows
Jones doing his job of protecting
a fallen rider from being stamped
on or gored by distracting the bull
and providing an alternative target
for the bull to attack. Bull fighters
expose themselves to great danger
in order to protect the cowboy.
They wear bright, loose-fitting
clothes that is designed to tear
away, with protective gear fitted
underneath. Rodeo clowns require
speed, agility, and the ability to anticipate a bull’s next move.
The popular Wooly Ride will return to
the Franklin County Fair during the intermission of the Barnes PRCA Rodeo.
The rodeo is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16. The event will be open to
both boys and girls with four classes:
boys, ages 5 and 6; girls, ages 5 and
6; boys, ages 7 and 8 and girls, ages 7
and 8. Entries will be limited to four in
each class. To enter, call the fair office
at 641-456-2049.
Names will be taken through 3 p.m.,
July 14. A drawing will be held and
competitors notified. All entrants must
bring their own bicycle helmet. Trophies will be presented to the winners
by Alan Brown, Golden Harvest and NK
Seeds.

FRIDAY IS UNITED BANK & TRUST DAY AT THE FAIR. They will serve free pork sandwiches beginning at noon until gone.
The Franklin County Fair is proud to present
Sawyer Brown on Friday, July 18
(L-R) Joe, Shayne, Gregg, Jim and Mark
T
he Franklin County Fair
is proud to present Sawyer Brown on Friday, July
18.
They’ve been called the Rolling
Stones of country music as for their
live shows - over 3,000 (and counting!) - are legendary for the excitement, energy and emotion they generate.
The band members are vocalist Mark Miller, keyboardist Gregg
“Hobie” Hubbard, lead guitarist Duncan Cameron, bassist Jim
Scholten and drummer Joe Smyth.
Sawyer Brown’s Midas touch has
turned more than 20 songs into Top
10 hits and millions of albums sold.
They were the TNN Awards golden
boys for six years running as Vocal Band of the Year, earned ACM
honors as Top Vocal Group, and garnered a CMA Horizon Award right
out of the gate in 1985, after their
Star Search grand prize win in 1984.
They’ve made over 30 videos and
released their 23rd album “Travelin’ Band” with “Walk Out Of The
Rain” their band’s newest single.
Mark Miller was born in Ohio,
but moved to Florida when he was
in eighth grade. Growing up, he
played basketball, went to the beach,
worked at Walt Disney World, and
went to school—pretty much in that
order. He was on the basketball team
at the University of Central Florida
when he started writing songs, finally deciding to move to Nashville to
focus on singing and songwriting.
Mark has written many of Sawyer Brown’s hits, including “Step
That Step,” “The Walk,” “Thank
God for You,” “The Boys and Me,”
as well as the band’s anthem: “Some
Girls Do.”
Mark discovered the band Casting Crowns and has produced all of
the band’s CDs, winning a Grammy
for his work with them along the
way. In April 2013, “Ring the Bell,”
a movie that Mark wrote and produced, was released—and he has
more movies in the pre-production
stage. Mark and his wife Lisa have
two children—Madison and Gunnar.
Joe Smyth never met a percussive instrument he didn’t like—and
he can play them all.
Joe is a graduate of the Berklee
College of Music and earned a Master’s Degree in Music from the University of Miami.
In addition to being a soughtafter session drummer, Joe is accomplished symphonic musician, as
well. He has played with the Nash-
ville Symphony, including at their
appearance at Carnegie Hall.
Joe is also a respected percussion
instructor, doing his part to nurture
the next generation of drummers
and percussionists.
Joe is the proud dad of Tristan,
Jenna, and Bryce.
Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard was
born and raised in Florida. He sang
and played piano in church through
his high school years and began writing songs when he was in college.
He has co-written several of Sawyer
Brown’s hits, including “The Dirt
Road,” “Drive Me Wild,” “’Round
Here,” and “Outskirts of Town,” as
well as several songs on the Sawyer
Brown Christmas albums. In addition to Sawyer Brown, Hobie has
sung background on recording sessions for a variety of artists.
Shayne Hill is the not-so-new
“new guy.” Shayne joined the band
in June of 2004—after rehearsing
with the band once.
Once. Yes—he was that good.
Shayne grew up on the road playing
music. His family had a band and
they toured all across the Western
U.S.—with Shayne playing even
more instruments than he does today.
Once he moved to Nashville,
Shayne toured with Chely Wright,
Avalon, LeAnn Rimes, and other
stars. He is also an indemand background singer and guitar player.
Shayne and his wife Kristin have
two children, Jesse and Harper.
Jim Scholten began playing music when he was just a kid—which
makes sense, considering that his
mom was a music teacher. Jim
played in bands throughout his home
state of Michigan prior to moving to
Nashville.
He plays bass on numerous recording sessions every year—and
still makes time to play in the praise
band in his church when he’s home.
Jim has two children, Nick and
Anna.
Coming to the fair can

4 of NBC’s The Voice. They finished in third place but it marked
the beginning of an exciting new
chapter in the history of the Swons.
“Growing up we traveled with our
parents every weekend playing
churches. Our parents were offered
record deals here and there,” recalls Zach. “But the most important
thing to them was keeping the family and the band together.”
After leaving the road, their parents formed a family-style variety

Zach Swon, left Colton Swon
cal teeth on everything from Elvis
to Frank Sinatra.
The Swon Brothers were honored with the Rising Star award by
the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame
and they were filling the Civic Center in Wagoner to capacity as fans
packed in week after week to watch
them entertain. They built a following and Zach and Colton decided to
begin playing as a duo and focused
even more on their songwriting.
Before coming to “The Voice,”
they spent a few years performing
around their home state and releasing their CDs on their own label.
Songs like the irresistibly catchy
“Oklahoma Lovin’” and the bluesy,
soulful, “This Close To Gone,” not
only show off their diverse vocal
strengths, but also their ability to
pen gripping lyrics that resonate
with audiences from young to old.
Their strong brotherly bond is undeniable in their performances as
they good-naturedly rib and tease
each other onstage and trade off on
tunes.
The brothers just completed recording their upcoming major-label
debut album, helmed by producer
Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood,
Sara Evans), which will be released
later this year.

FIGURE 8 and Cruiser Car Races
Sunday in Grandstand
Put together oval racing, road racing, and demolition derby and you have Figure 8 racing.
The sport began way back in the late 1940s, after the Second World War. Racing is
done on a track shaped like an 8. Danger is the allure as cars snake around two cir-
cles, clockwise around one and counterclockwise around the other, crossing paths
twice every lap in a lawless intersection called the crossover. Crashes are inevitable
as luck runs out in a cloudburst of steam and scattered auto parts.
Meyer Motorsports is the promoter.
Meyer Motorsports returns to the grandstand track for an exciting evening of races on Sunday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. There’s a full slate of both Figure 8 and Cruiser Car
Races so be sure to be in the stands to cheer for your favorite drivers.
