Trails In Every Park Offer A Variety Of Experiences From a 0.3 mile trail around a woodland pond at Secor to the 16-mile hiking trail at Oak Openings, trails are a common ingredient in every Metropark. Trails vary in length and are marked with a color “blaze” system. Most trails loop back to where they began and some have short and long loops to choose from. The starting point for a trail is called a trailhead. Often in the Metroparks, a trailhead will lead walkers to multiple trail options. Find a list of trails and lengths at MetroparksToledo.com. On the front page, select Park Trails from the Explore menu. Reservations: 419-407-9700 OR METROPARKSPROGRAMS.COM More Online Visit MetroparksToledo.com for more about Year of the Trail. Explore the Black Swamp Celebrate the 75th anniversary of Pearson Metropark with a walk through northwest Ohio’s last remaining piece of the notorious Great Black Swamp. The Wood Thrush Trail (blue) and Black Swamp Trail (orange) both begin at the PackerHammersmith Center in the middle of the park. Each looped trail is 1.3 miles in length and takes about 30 minutes to walk. The Black Swamp Trail also has a 0.8 mile loop for a quicker nature break. Both trails will lead you back in time to the days when the swamp blanketed much of the region. Notice the dense hardwoods, including red maples, sycamores, basswood, cottonwood and oaks, many of them older than the park itself. Beneath the towering trees, an under story of growth includes spicebush, musclewood, pawpaw, prickly ash, elderberry and dogwood – species that thrive in the moist, fertile soils. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, orioles, red-eyed vireo, ovenbirds, Acadian flycatchers and other birds – maybe even a screech owl or sharp-shinned hawk. Oak Openings Horse Trail One of the most popular trails for horse riding in Ohio is located right here in the Metroparks, at Oak Openings Preserve. The preserve has 14.5 miles of horse trails, while the adjacent Maumee State Forest has 15 additional miles of trail to explore. A Horse Riders Center is located on Jeffers Road with ample parking for trailers, restrooms, water, hitching posts and a picnic shelter with grills. Horsemen enjoy Oak Openings because of the unique habitat, which is unlike any other in the state, with sandy soils and dunes, oak woodland, prairie and oak savannas. The uncommon combination creates a beautiful blend of scenery and species found only a few places in the world. Volunteers patrol the trail on horseback to provide information and assistance to trail users. Watch for the yellow shirts of the Volunteer Trail Patrol.
