ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize?
Run in such a way that you may win.
Corinthians 9:24
Dear Alumni, Friends, and Supporters of St. Mary High School,
An examination of the letters of St. Paul in scripture reveals a number of references to
athletic competition. Many Bible scholars believe that his comfort with sports analogies
indicate that St. Paul, himself, was probably a competitive athlete at some time in his youth.
I find it fascinating that St. Paul saw sports as an analogy to life in the “real world” and that
the characteristics that make a great athlete are the same that make a good man or woman.
I don’t believe it’s an accident that athletics have traditionally played an important role in
Catholic schools. Educating students in mind, body, and spirt may be a bit of a cliché but,
like most clichés, it’s strongly grounded in truth. The lessons learned on the court, on the
diamond, on the fields of play serve not only to enhance the development of a strong body,
but also speak to learning focus, determination, drive, and teamwork. St. Paul was right –
these are life lessons!
We honor this evening, as we have in the past, those men and women who demonstrated, over
the years, extraordinary commitment to competitive sports at St. Mary High School, who
pushed harder than they ever thought possible, who suffered setbacks and failure but never quit,
who found strength within themselves they didn’t know they had, and emerged victorious.
These people have brought honor not only to themselves, but also to our beloved school and all
of the young men and women who have been, are, and will be part of this community.
Thank you, our honorees, for setting a standard of excellence at St. Mary!
Sincerely,
Richard A. Bayhan

St. Mary Alumni Association
Hall of Fame Committee
The St. Mary Athletic Hall of Fame Committee is very honored to welcome you to its
19th Induction Banquet. It will be difficult to surpass the success of our last Banquet, but
many months of hard work have gone into preparing tonight’s festivities.
After the outpouring of goodwill produced at the last Banquet, the Hall of Fame
Committee went back to work on nominating candidates from each decade of the
school’s history. Dozens of hours were spent reviewing articles in the local newspapers
detailing the athletic exploits of the candidates. The actual voting on tonight’s inductees
was preceded by the presentation of written and oral biographies on each of the
candidates. By subjecting the candidates to this “crucible” of scrutiny, we believe that we
have found an illustrious group of Inductees.
The work of the Hall of Fame Committee goes on throughout the entire year, and we
welcome comments, suggestions and recommendations of interested Alumni and friends.
St. Mary Alumni Association and its Athletic Hall of Fame extend their warm
congratulations to this years Inductees, and wish them and their families continued
happiness and good fortune.
Very Truly Yours,

2014 INDUCTEES
Bill Stagg – 1935
Bill Stagg was an outstanding, versatile offensive and defensive performer for the Gaels’
1950 and 1951 football squads. As a junior our inductee spearheaded St. Mary’s rushing
attack from his tackle position, anchored the defense as an aggressive, dominating
linebacker who led the team in tackles and forced turnovers and ably handled the
punting duties. Bill’s superlative play during the 1950 season earned him post-season AllCatholic recognition on the Newark Star Eagle All-State team. Our inductee was among
the best players on St. Mary’s 1951 squad, which was probably the best team of that era
and led by new coach, Leo Moran. Due to his prolific athletic skill and versatility, Bill was
shifted on offense to end, where he led the team in scoring with nine touchdown
receptions, and also to defensive end, where he continued to terrorize opposing running
backs. But for a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to St. Cecelia’s that season, our inductee’s senior
squad would have been State champions.
In addition to his gridiron heroics, Bill also performed on the basketball hardcourt as a slashing, sharpshooting guard for
St. Mary’s outstanding varsity basketball teams in the early 1950s.
After graduating from St. Mary, our inductee attended Fordham University and graduated in 1956. He was then
commissioned a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, and served in England at RAF Station Lakenheath as an air traffic controller.
Bill served in the Air Force with distinction through 1959. After being discharged from the Air Force, Bill began a long
business career in 1959 in New York City with J.C. Penney Co., where he last served as Purchasing Service Manager until his
death in 1983. Our inductee married Irene Stach in 1957 and they had five children and eight grandchildren.
Pete Ryan – 1979
Pete Ryan is remembered as a stalwart member of the Gaels’ football and track squads
and as a pioneering figure on St. Mary’s initial wrestling teams. On the gridiron, Pete was
a strong, mobile two-way player who led St. Mary’s running attack from his offensive
tackle position and thwarted the opponents’ offensive thrust from his linebacker post.
Our inductee had great vision and quick feet, and is remembered by his coaches as a
receptive, polite and coachable player. In recognition of his football prowess, Pete was
selected to the All-League First Team as a linebacker in his junior year, and achieved
spots on the All Area (Herald News) First Team, All-County (Record) Third Team and AllLeague First Team as a linebacker in his senior season in 1978. Pete was also a member
of the 1976 10-0 State Championship Football team.
Pete was one of the leaders of St. Mary’s fledging wrestling teams in 1978 and 1979, and
was a skilled, flexible competitor on the mats.
In the spring, our inductee was a powerful competitor in the field events for the Gaels’ track and field team. In his
junior season, Pete achieved fifth place in the discus throw in the Parochial B Championships, and improved to
second place in the discus event in the same meet as a senior. Our inductee also won further recognition on the AllCounty, Honorable Mention roster and All-League First Team for the discus in his junior and senior seasons. Pete
currently owns second place in school history for both the discus throw and the shot put.
After his Hall of Fame career at St. Mary’s, Pete attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he started at
offensive tackle for three years, won varsity letters for four years and served as Captain for the 1982 squad. Our
inductee won a spot on the All-League team and was elected to the District Academic All-American First Team in USA
Today in 1982. Pete also organized the rugby club team at Catholic, where he scrummed for three seasons. Pete
graduated with honors from Catholic University in 1983 with a degree in accounting. Two years later, our inductee
completed his MBA in Finance with honors from the University of Baltimore. (Continued on next page.)

recognized as one of the top 50 accounting firms in the D.C. metropolitan area. He is a member of the BDO Alliance, a
national association of accounting and consulting firms, and has served on many philanthropic and governing boards.
Pete lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland with his wife, Danielle, and they have two children at Villanova University.
Michael J. Whatley – 1996
Michael Whatley was an indefatigable sports warrior for all seasons. Long and lean, our
inductee was a fleet, graceful and powerful competitor who used his speed and
dexterity to overmatch his competitors effortlessly on the gridiron, the hardcourt and
the cinder track. In addition to excelling as a running back and wide receiver, Michael
distinguished himself as a defensive back who garnered honors on the All League, First
Team, All Area (Herald News) Second Team, All-State Parochial (Star Ledger) Third Team
and All-County (Record) Honorable Mention roster in his senior season.
At his forward position, our inductee was an excellent scorer, rebounder and defender
for the Gaels’ basketball squad for three years. Michael was the deserving recipient of
the 1994-1994 Coaches Award and was also voted to the All-League First Team and AllCounty, Honorable Mention roster in his senior season.
Our inductee enjoyed splendid seasons as a track performer in his sophomore and junior years. As a sophomore,
Michael was elected MVP of the Gael track team and was voted to the All-League First Team in the 400 meters. Our
inductee also was a distinguished relay runner, running the anchor leg of the Gaels’ All-League First Team 1600 Meter
Relay squad, the Group 1, County Championship 1600 meter relay team at the Bergen County Meet of Champions,
and the State Parochial B second Place 1600 meter relay foursome.
In his junior track season, Michael ran to new individual running honors by setting a Group 1, County Championship
record of 51.0 seconds in the 400 meters at the Bergen County Meet of Champions and anchored a second place
finish for St. Mary Group 1 1600 meter relay team at the same meet. He also was voted All-League First Team in the
200 meters, 400 meters and 1600 meter relay team, All-League Second Team in the high jump, All-State Parochial B
third Place in the 200 meters and second place in the 400 meters.
Following his unforgettable Hall of Fame career at St. Mary, our inductee attended Rowan University, where he was a
member of the 1997 Division III semi-finalist in football. He currently is employed as a credit and collections specialist
for the Star Ledger.
Andy Conte – 1974 – Contributor
Andy Conte has been a generous and diversified Contributor to St. Mary athletics since
his graduation in 1974. Coach Conte has coached at multiple posts for various Gaels’
teams over a period of more than twenty years. For the baseball program, Andy served as
assistant JV coach (1975-76), head JV coach(1980), assistant varsity coach (1981, 1988)
and head varsity coach (1989-1993). During the same era, our inductee was an assistant
varsity football coach in 1980 and 1988, the head volleyball coach (1992-1993) and the
girls head track coach (1995). Andy’s trademark as an athletic coach was his signature
ability to teach, which he developed during 16 years of teaching at St. Mary which was
capped off by winning the Teacher of the Year award in 2000.
Besides his tremendous service as an athletic coach of male and female athletes at St.
Mary, our inductee has used his limitless technological skills to enhance the media
capabilities at the school. These contributions included developing a film and editing curriculum at St. Mary and
producing recruiting videos for numerous Gael football players and highlight films for other sports. From 1992 to
2004, Andy provided the sound system for all home football games at Tamblyn Field, and served as site manager and
P.T. announcer for many football games with his mellifluous baritone voice. During his years as head baseball coach,
our inductee raised money for the baseball program by running “50s” music nights. (Continued on next page.)

Andy is a founding member of the Gael Open, and served on its committee from 1991 to 2005. Since joining the St. Mary
Hall of Fame Committee in 2010, our inductee as been an indispensable contributor, providing video biographies of the
inductees, providing and operating the DJ and sound systems for the Hall of Fame banquets and making special
presentations at the Banquets.
Andy has also provided the sound system and DJ entertainment for the Spring Gala and the annual Baseball barbecue, as
well as play by play for the alumni Old Timers game. Our inductee has also supported St. Mary over the years by attending
innumerable fundraisers, including the Football Beefsteak, the Basketball Final Four and other special events. Andy was the
recipient of the Distinguished Person Award in 1994 and the Golden Apple Award in 2000.
Paul Johnsen – 1998
Paul Johnsen was an historical running back for St. Mary in the second half of the 1990s.
His head coach, Mike Sheridan, recalls Paul with admiration for practicing with the same
intensity he devoted to actual games, which gave him a “motor” of endurance through
every fourth quarter. His teammates remember him quite simply as the toughest guy on
the field in every game he played. Our inductee was a fast, slashing runner who set a new
school season rushing record of 1,388 yards at that time. In his junior season, Paul was
voted onto the All-League First team as a linebacker, and achieved spots on the First
Team, All-State Parochial team, Second Team All-County team and First Team All-League
team for his stirring performance as a running back in his senior campaign. Paul also
excelled as a sprinter for St. Mary for three spring track seasons.
After graduation, our inductee played football at New Haven College for one year, and
then embarked on a five year career as a running back for the semi-pro Brooklyn Mariners. During that span, Paul won
three Most Valuable Player awards in four national championship games, including a 17-0 season capped off by a strong
performance in the Minneapolis Metrodome. Our inductee also played two seasons for the New York Revolution, an
arena football team. After his playing years, Paul launched another career as a trainer of athletes, and is the owneroperator of the F.A.S.S.T (Functional Athletic Strength and Speed Training) facility in Lyndhurst.
Paul resides in Lyndhurst with his wife, Jessica, and his sons, Aaron and Logan.
Justin Soccol – 2001
Justin Soccol played baseball and basketball for four years during his years at St. Mary High
School. He earned varsity letters in basketball his junior and senior year and lettered in
baseball as a sophomore, junior and senior. Justin played in a time where SM athletic
dominance hit its stride. Every year student – athletes were raising up and Justin showed his
dominance as a sophomore on the diamond going 4–0 on the hill and was in line the next
season to be a front line pitcher. During his junior year he really carved out his niche going
5–3 on the first of two state sectional championship teams while earning 2nd team all league
honors and honorable mention on the prestigious all – area team. An above average batsmen
and fielder, Justin came into his own during his senior year going 10–4 with a save. He was
the anchor of the 2nd straight state sectional championship team as a he pitched an
impressive 2–0 shutout over Balley-Ellard earning the 2nd straight trip to the dance. He also
struck-out 133 batters (2nd in the area), and pitched to a sparkling 1.40 ERA. 1st team all
league and all area honors followed as well as a 2nd team all-county team honor missing the triumphed by just a few votes.
His 19-7 record ranked him third all time in school history for wins. On the hardwood Justin was a four year performer
earning two varsity letters. A solid defender, Justin played with tenacity and was never disappointing at crunch time.
Justin went on to Felician College where he lettered all four years. After college he pursued a career in education and
currently teaches Physical Education and Health at Midland Park HS in Bergen County. He handles the pitching staff as
well as being assistant varsity coach on the baseball team.
He is married to Tracy-Lyn who is a guidance counselor at North Arlington HS. Justin and Tracy-Lyn are expecting
their fist child any time now. They reside in Nutley.

Stephanie Brodo – 2004
Stephanie (Brodo) Papasidero lit up the St. Mary’s softball diamond in the early years of 2K.
On defense, our inductee was a quick, acrobatic fixture at second base who dared batters to
hit the ball to the right side. As the lead-off hitter in the lineup, Stephanie ignited the Gaels
offense by hitting over .400 for most of her career. As a freshman in 2001, Stephanie debuted
in grand fashion, making the All-County Second Team and the All-League First Team. Stephanie
had a breakout season in her sophomore year, hitting .458 with nine doubles, one triple,
nineteen walks, 24 runs and 14 runs batted in from her leadoff slot. Our inductee also
excelled at her second base post, compiling a .982 fielding percentage and recording 38
assists and 89 putouts. In recognition of her excellent play, Stephanie earned spots on the AllCounty First Team and the All-League First Team.
During her junior campaign, our inductee continued her exemplary fielding play and was one of Bergen County’s best
hitters, batting .458 again with 38 hits and 36 runs scored. Stephanie’s baseball notoriety expanded that year, as she
was awarded well-deserved spots on the All-State, All-Groups (Associated Press) Second Team, All-North Jersey, AllGroups First Team, All-County First Team and All-League First Team. Our inductee capped off her brilliant Hall of Fame
career in 2004 by pounding out 37 hits, scoring 35 runs and grinding out 16 walks from her leadoff spot, and playing
stingy defense. In tribute to her stirring senior season, Stefanie was cited on the All-State, All-Groups (Associated Press)
First Team, All-North Jersey, All-Groups First Team, All-County First Team and All-League First Team.
Following graduation Stephanie played softball at Caldwell College on scholarship but her career was cut short due to a
shoulder injury. She completed Education degrees in Elementary Education and Social Studies and graduated with honors
(Cum Laude). She is now married with a daughter and son on the way, and teaches in the Belleville school system.
Joella Pounds – 2004
Joella Pounds was a glimmering standout in the colorful array of Saint Mary’s female
athletes. While best remembered for her dominance on the basketball court, she also
excelled in softball and cross country. Joella was a dedicated athlete who was never
satisfied and constantly worked to improve her game on the court, on the softball
dinamod and on the running trails.
Joella was one of the best point guards to blaze though the St. Mary women’s basketball
program. Our inductee exhibited a commanding presence on the court from the start of
her career. During her freshman year, Joella averaged 14 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds
per game, was named Best Freshman by the Bergen Record and earned All-League First
Team, All-County Second Team and All-Area Second Team honors. In her sophomore year,
our inductee averaged 15 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals per game, was named
Athlete of the Week in the Bergen Record and became team captain, a title she held for the remainder of her Hall of
Fame career. In acknowledgment of her sophomore heroics, Joella achieved All-League First Team, All-County First
Team, All-Area First Team, All-North Jersey First Team and All-State (Group 1) First Team honors.
In her junior year, Joella averaged 16 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals per game and recorded her name in the
Gaels 1000 point club. She again earned All-League First Team, All-County First Team, All-Area First Team, All-North
Jersey First Team, All-State (Group 1) First Team and All-Parochial Third Team honors. Prior to the start of her senior
year, Joella was selected to the Pre-Season McDonald’s All American Team but sustained a season-ending right knee
injury in the third game of the season. Despite her injury, Joella was selected to play in the Bergen-Passaic All Star
Game. In recognition of her historical basketball career at St. Mary, Joella was named to the Bergen County All-Decade
(2000-2010) Team, an honor bestowed only on the most elite high school players in the game.
On the softball diamond, Joella was a four-year starter and demonstrated tenacious agility at shortstop. Her talented
performance earned her All-League First Team honors in her sophomore and junior years, and All-County Third Team
and All-Area First Team honors in her junior year. Joella also achieved All-League Honorable Mention as a harrier.
Our inductee went on to receive a full basketball scholarship to Long Island University, a Division 1 school in New
York, where she graduated with a Masters Degree in Sports Medicine. Joella is still a large part of the St. Mary
community as Physical education teacher and Head Women’s Basketball Coach.

2004 Non-Public B State Championship Wrestling Team
The Gaels’ 2004 wrestling team is one of the most unique teams in St. Mary’s history. The team won not only the first
State Championship since the program’s inception but the school’s first State Championship of the 21st century.
When Coach Scot Weaver took over the program in the early 2000s, he had a great deal of work to do. However the
new coach brought with him experience, rigor and patience, three critical elements to the program’s success. This
infusion of wrestling genius produced a startling, immediate improvement in the program, and created wrestlers
who were motivated to learn and hungry to win. The unparallel success of the 2004 team was a testimony to its
coach and to the grueling hard work and commitment of its wrestlers. The energized team ranked in the Bergen
Record’s Top 25 week after week among wrestling powerhouses that had dominated the state for decades.
The grapplers on the 2004 team were fierce and focused, with their eyes aimed firmly on the prize. They glided
through the season in seemingly routine fashion, securing championships that were novel to the program. For the
third year in a row, the team took home a North Parochial B Championship which sent them back to the Group State
Championships. The team had experienced a heartbreaking loss the previous year to St. Augustine, and were headed
back to the finals to face them again. This time, however, St. Mary’s prevailed and became a great State Championship
team in the school’s rich athletic history. The 2004 team later won the District 16 tournament, another first for the
wrestling program, with 10 wrestlers winning medals and five taking home the gold.
The 2004 team was led by a nucleus of hard-nosed individuals who are remembered as some of the best wrestlers
to come through the program. These unforgettable athletes went on that year to achieve many individual accolades
at the district, regional and state levels, and to win league, county and state honors.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD
1990 Football Team – “Unsung Heroes”
The 1990 St. Mary football season will long be remembered as the season in which the Gaels
re-established their winning tradition. After a decade of losing seasons, the 1990 squad soared to an
impressive record of 6 wins and 3 losses, highlighted by a stunning 14-0 Homecoming victory over rival
Wallington High School.
The 1990 team set the foundation for the succeeding 25 consecutive winning football seasons, the longest
streak of success in St. Mary’s glorious football history. This team also commenced a return to glory of all
of St. Mary athletic teams and will always be remembered as the architects of this turning point in our
school history. The St. Mary Athletic Hall of Fame acknowledges this contribution and honors the 1990
team with our “Special Recognition Award.”
