As one of the most advanced aircraft engine manufacturing facilities in the world, the Rolls-Royce
Crosspointe plant in Prince George (Virginia / USA) also sets new standards for production
machining technology. Through the use of six DMC 125 FD duoBLOCK® machines and with
support from the DECKEL MAHO Excellence Center in Pfronten, a unique production process was
implemented to produce complex turbine discs that provide the necessary thrust for commercial
engines on aircraft like the Boeing Dreamliner and the Airbus A380.

Magnescale length and angle measuring systems
are used for highly accurate positioning of machine
tool axes. Due to the magnetic operating principle,
they are resistant to contamination. Since the
Magnescale length measuring systems have the
same thermal expansion coefficient as machine
tools, temperature fluctuations do not affect the
accuracy of the machine.

Tom Fliss, president and owner of AGI VR / Wesson, a well-known manufacturer of standard and
special cutting tools, had a bottleneck when manufacturing polycrystalline diamond (PCD) cutting
tools. EDM processes for cutting inserts from a tool blank took up to 17 hours, slowing other
downstream processes. As a solution, Fliss purchased a DMG lasertec 50.
He says, "We were feeding all our PCD products through three wire EDMs, while dealing
with other product as well. But, we found that the lasertec 50 was 65 times faster, allowing us to
utilize the EDM equipment on other products. The lasertec 50 does the work of the three EDM
machines in only three to four hours. Also, the edge quality of the inserts is probably 5 times better
than on the EDMs.” Fliss also adds, "We now have the capacity and equipment to react quickly, and
it's this lasertec 50 that allows us to do it.”
