A Warm Welcome
It’s no easy task. How can you distill the
special magic of Appledore and pour it into a
few paragraphs? Well, let’s try ...
Imagine a place formed as much by water
as by land. A picture postcard Devon fishing
village huddled under green hills where history
is as real as the air. It’s a place where once
a year some of the finest and most creative
minds in Britain share their wit and wisdom.
Some are old friends and others are new
authors – with a special emphasis on local
talent and interest.
And Appledore is more than a book festival –
it’s a shared experience that unites authors
with the entire community. The Festival
charity depends almost entirely on local
volunteers to deliver our ten day event. So
here there are no strangers – only welcome
guests and friends yet to meet. In Appledore
you can relax – stroll from talk to talk, eat,
drink and best of all be inspired in a place
where inspiration is a heartbeat away.
If you’ve been before you’ll know what I
mean. And if this is your first time, you’ve
got it all to discover. To everyone we offer a
warm WELCOME and the opportunity to write
another chapter in the story of our amazing
book festival.
We hope you enjoy Appledore and our Tenth
Anniversary Festival line up.

SCHOOLS PROGRAMME 2016
Appledore has two book festivals. There’s the festival that you see and the
festival you don’t see! The invisible festival is the Schools Programme. It runs
from 10th to 14th October and it’s the biggest outreach programme of its kind in
the UK – sending some of Britain’s best children’s writers to schools all over
its North Devon hinterland. Their mission is to deliver talks and workshops that
bring their books to life.
SCHOOLS PROGRAMME 2016
In our rural community, there are many schools who cannot participate in the Festival programme
with their own event and many parents who choose to teach their children at home. Our Festival
aims to make events accessible to all. By working closely with our libraries we stage events that
everyone is welcome to enjoy. You can read about these events on pages 52 and 53.
AUTHORS VISITING THE SCHOOLS
The aim is simple. The Appledore Book Festival was set up to spread a love of reading and
learning and the Schools Programme ensures that Appledore is a festival not for the few but for
the many. Thanks to the Schools Programme thousands of North Devon children who would never
normally meet a real-life author in a million years are shown an entire new world of excitement and
opportunity within the pages of books. This is what makes Appledore’s unseen festival special.
Most book festivals change perceptions - this one changes lives. Long may it flourish!

Thank you to Waterstones for sponsoring our Schools Programme and to all the hard-working
voluntary stewards who accompany our visiting authors and travel many miles to ensure authors
don’t get lost in Devon’s winding lanes! Our Schools Festival would not happen without the hard
work and dedication from Pat Glover, Pat Hadley-Smith and Marilyn Young who manage and deliver
this programme on a voluntary basis.
All our authors stay in Appledore during the week 10th-14th October.
Thanks to Jan and Phil at The Seagate for hosting them.

WHEN THE SKELETON ARMY CAME TO NORTH DEVON
11am–12noon, St Mary’s Hall, £8
The Salvation Army first established in North Devon in July 1881 and
almost from the first their novel evangelising actions and unbending
teetotalism led to them being attacked in the streets by drunks and thugs
who became known as the ‘Skeleton Army’. Local historian Peter Christie
looks at this colourful period in the history of the Salvationists in this area
- and reveals insights into the sometimes tempestuous religious life of late
Victorian Britain.

Elizabethan insults in Devon varied from those that are uttered today. An

men were insulted in different ways from women. The terms used reveal
the social lives of our forebears (particularly of their intimate relations) in a
manner which has never been discussed in public since. Dr Todd Gray has
devoted his working career to the study of Devon history and has written
more widely on Devon than any other Devon historian. His latest book

Our Festival would not be celebrating ten years had it not been for the campaign,
led by our founder Nick Arnold, to save Appledore Library for our village
community. We are very proud to have this service and you are welcome to drop
in throughout the Festival.

USEFUL INFORMATION
USEFUL INFORMATION
Appledore is a beautiful, historic maritime village within an Area Of Outstanding Natural
Beauty. Whether you live here, are a return visitor or you are visiting for the first
time, we’d like to extend a warm welcome from the Festival Team and all our business
supporters in the village. This section aims to help you make the most of your visit.
Over five thousand people visited our village and our venues last year, Appledore will be
vibrant and lively and hopefully sunny! Please plan your visit to avoid disappointment if
you need accommodation and would like to include a meal and drinks during your stay.
