Mentor: Empowering Young People
What does Mentor do?
Mentor's Vision:
•
Mentor is the leading international
non-governmental organisation working
globally to prevent substance abuse.
Our vision is a world where children and young
people are empowered to make healthy decisions
and avoid drug abuse.
•
We empower young people to make healthy
decisions and to avoid drug abuse.
Mentor's Mission:
•
We support donors / companies in doing
good for children and young people.
To prevent drug abuse through the promotion of
health and well-being in children and young people.

Together we make prevention effective
and visible.
•
We help organisations and authorities
reach out to children and young people.
As the leading international NGO voice of drug
prevention, we work with our partners to reach out
to children and young people. We apply and share
our knowledge internationally so that the benefits of
effective drug prevention policy and practice
become visible worldwide.
Through our national organisations and network
of partners we undertake and deliver effective
prevention programmes.

Mentor’s Values:
Mentor’s Commitment
• Inspire & Encourage
Mentor is committed to providing and encouraging
the development of best practices and effective
policies in drug abuse prevention and the promotion
of health and well-being for all young people.
Mentor’s work is recognised by the United Nations
Office of Drugs and Crime, the World Health
Organisation, the Organisation of American States
and the Council of Europe.
We believe that young people are able to make
sensible, healthy decisions and can take
responsibility for their actions. We support activities
that encourage collaboration with community
members and involve young people in planning,
delivering and / or evaluating these activities.
• Care & Prevent
We believe that there is a fundamental need to
invest in preventing drug abuse and making drug
abuse less likely. Prevention begins with the healthy
development of the child in a nurturing family and
supportive community that offers both protection
from risk and opportunities for young people to
achieve their fullest potential.
• Strengthen & Empower
We believe in providing young people with
knowledge and opportunities that will support and
enable them to make informed decisions and to
avoid drug abuse.
• Partnerships & Collaboration
We believe that through actions and collaboration at
various levels: global, national, community and
individual we can reach our vision.
“We must work together to
prevent drug abuse and offer
positive and healthy opportunities
for our young people.”
Her Majesty The Queen of Sweden,
President, Mentor International
It's hard to believe that almost 20 years have passed since The Mentor
Foundation was established. During that time we have developed numerous
projects around the world to prevent drug abuse in young people through the
promotion of health and well-being.
It gives me a great sense of pride to know that The Mentor Foundation's work
has had a positive impact on the lives of millions of young people. We empower
them to fulfil their potential and support those working with young people to be
effective in their prevention work.
Throughout 2012 The Mentor Foundation affiliates have continued to develop
programmes in Colombia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, UK, USA and in
the Arab League countries. Furthermore, this year saw the establishment of
Mentor's Partner in Prevention acting as focal point for prevention in Uganda
and the East African region.
I would like to offer my gratitude to Jeff Lee who retired from the position of
Executive Director in November 2012 and thank him for all his hard work over
the years. We welcome Paul Rompani to the position of Executive Director and
look forward to working with him.
Thank you to all who support The Mentor Foundation's work; together we can
continue to make a difference and help to ensure that our children remain free
from the harm drugs can cause and give them the positive and healthy future
they deserve.
Her Majesty The Queen of Sweden
President, Mentor International
Currently, some 73.8 million young people
are unemployed globally and the slowdown
in economic activity is likely to push another
half million into unemployment by 2014.
ILO Global Employment Trends 2013
The Mentor Foundation runs programmes to prepare young people for the
work place including job mentoring and career inspiration days in Sweden,
USA and UK.
Throughout 2012 we maintained, served and supported a growing global network of
individuals, groups and organisations working in the youth development and
substance prevention fields. We worked closely with our National and Regional
affiliates in addition to partners across sectors to develop the capacity of prevention
organisations working with children and young people. Highlights for the year include our collaboration with the United Nations Office on
Drugs and Crime to prepare the International Standards on Drug Use Prevention and
the development of a new project in Uganda in partnership with the International
Olympic Committee. Photo: Arnold Adler
This year we also began to develop an exciting online focal point for sharing research,
policy and best practice. This service called the Prevention Hub will build networks and
support the global drug prevention community to safeguard children and young
people. We look forward to launching the first phase of the new Prevention Hub
website in 2013. Whilst we have achieved a great deal during the year, and over the 19 years since we
were established, there is still so much more that we could accomplish. In 2013 we
will connect with new and existing partners in order to make a positive impact on the
lives of many more children and young people. The best investment that we can
make, as a global community, is to invest in the youth of today.
We are immensely grateful for the support we have received over the past 12 months
and look forward to working together further in 2013.

A major global problem...
Drug abuse affects every layer of our lives: health, family, crime,
education, economy, etc.
Alcohol and illicit drug
use account for 5.4% of
the world's annual disease
burden, with tobacco
responsible for 3.7%.
WHO Atlas on Substance Use (2010)
$510.8 billion:
The social cost of alcohol,
tobacco, and drug abuse
in the United States.
SAMHSA Substance Abuse Prevention Dollars and Cents:
A Cost-Benefit Analysis (2008)
Children and adolescents who
suffer from neglect, abuse,
household dysfunction,
exposure to violence and
instability are at particular risk
of substance abuse.
Demographics suggest that
the total number of drug
users could, in line with the
growth of the world
population, increase by a
quarter before 2050.
UNODC World Drug Report 2012
Prevention is the solution…
Evidence shows that quality prevention practice is effective at
reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors.
Parents and positive adult
influencers, including
mentors, play a vital role in
healthy youth development
and substance use
prevention. A study of one
national mentoring
program notes that youth
involved in mentoring are
46 percent less likely to
begin using illegal drugs.
US government National Drug Control Strategy 2013
The return on investment
in school-based prevention
services would range
between $7.40 and $36
per dollar invested, with
a medium estimate of $18.

Mentor Foundation Highlights from 2012
Mentor International secures
funding for the Prevention Hub
During 2012 we secured funding from the IKEA
Foundation to develop, launch, implement and
evaluate an online resource that will be a global focal
point for sharing prevention research, policy and best
practice. The website called the ‘Prevention Hub’ is
part of the three-year initiative that will build networks
and offer unique support to the global drug
prevention community. The first stage of this exciting
website will be launched in 2013.
Uganda Youth Development Link
(UYDEL) achieves Partner in
Prevention status
This project aimed to build an informed network of
drug abuse prevention organisations in Uganda,
Kenya and Tanzania, and improve the effectiveness
of their work. This two year pilot project began in
2010 and supported the capacity of UYDEL staff
and more than 250 NGOs to establish a focal point
for prevention in the region.
Paul Rompani joins Mentor
International as Executive Director
Following the retirement of Jeff Lee in November
2012, Mentor International appointed Paul
Rompani to the position of Executive Director.
Jeff Lee will continue to support Mentor as a
Senior Scientific Advisor in a consulting
capacity.
Paul, who will be based in London, comes to
Mentor with a strong background in leading
international not-for-profit organisations. He
holds an MSc in Voluntary Sector Organisation
from the London School of Economics.
Mentor International develops pilot
project with International Olympic
Committee in Uganda.
Throughout 2012 we developed the joint project
with the International Olympic Committee (IOC)
called ‘Prevention and Health through Sport.’
The project aims to provide those working with
young people in Uganda with a resource that not
only develops young people’s sporting interests but
does so whilst promoting healthy lifestyles and drug
use prevention.
The next stage will be to deliver training to three
community groups based in the Kampala district of
Uganda who will go on to use Mentor International’s
resource to deliver sporting related activities to 1418 year olds in a community setting.
Mentor International
collaborates with the UN
In 2012 Mentor International worked
closely with the United Nations Office on
Drugs and Crime (UNODC). We were
the only international NGO invited to
participate in the development of the
International Standards on Drug Use
Prevention which will be used to develop
programmes and policies to support the
positive development of children and
young people.
Mentor Foundation’s
work progresses in Estonia,
Latvia and Lithuania
Mentor Foundation USA hosts
Gala in Washington, D.C.
Mentor Foundation USA’s Gala dinner in
September 2012 at the Four Seasons hotel in
Washington, D.C. helped bring national and
international awareness to the importance of
drug abuse among children and young people.
The event also highlighted the importance of
The Mentor Foundation and helped to raise
essential funds for our work in the USA.
The Mentor Foundation’s mentoring
and parenting projects made possible
with SEB (the leading Nordic corporate
bank) support continues to grow in the
Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and
Lithuania. SEB is supporting the growth
of the projects to reach more young
people and involve more parents.

Mentor Arabia
Mentor Colombia
Mentor Arabia is the first regional member of the Mentor network,
covering the 22 nations of the Arab League. It was established in
response to the recommendations of an Arab and international
scientific forum which took place in Dubai in 2004. Based in
Beirut, Lebanon, Mentor Arabia is headed by a Board of Trustees
chaired by HRH Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdul Aziz al Saud.
Mentor Colombia is a non-profit organisation with the
mission to promote social and human development,
promote health, and prevent psychoactive substance
abuse and related issues, such as violence and unhealthy
sexual practices, through the development of promotion,
prevention and reinforcement actions.
Mentor Arabia is committed to advocating for drug prevention and
promoting the health and well-being of children and young people
in the Arab World as well as establishing a culture of drug prevention.
Mentor Colombia has eight years experience designing,
developing, implementing and evaluating services and
projects for promoting health and preventing drug
consumption. They also develop activities for social
promotion, advisory and consultancy services on drug
demand reduction and related issues. Mentor Colombia
has had a positive impact through its projects and
prevention programmes and has reached children,
teenagers, parents and adults from eleven Colombian
regions.
"We envision a drug-free Arab world where children and young
people are given the opportunities to lead healthy lives."
This is the vision that reflects Mentor Arabia's commitment
towards bringing about serious change in the culture of drug use,
and establishing a culture of prevention to ensure a safe and
healthy life for our children and young people.
Mentor Germany
Mentor Latvia
Established in 1997, Mentor Germany works with partners
across sectors to promote, develop, implement and
disseminate innovative prevention projects and programmes
to enable children and young people to develop healthy
lifestyles. Mentor Germany works with young people, 'eye to
eye', and acts as a mediator and a representative of their
views, interests and needs.
Mentor Latvia is the latest member to join the Mentor
Foundation, opening in 2011. Mentor Latvia focuses on the
promotion of health and well-being and prevention of drug
abuse among children and young people in Latvia. The
target groups for Mentor Latvia’s programmes are at risk
and vulnerable young people between 15-25 years old and
parents with children aged between 6-18 years old.
One of Mentor Germany's key projects is REBOUND; a media
and resilience based prevention project working with 14-18
year olds that focuses on creating a process of cooperative
learning between parents, schools and youth organisations.
In partnership with Latvian corporations and adult
volunteers, Mentor Latvia manages two key programmes:
Mentoring and Parenting. The programmes connect young
people with adults to keep them engaged in education,
enable them to learn about healthy lifestyles and prepare
them for adulthood. The various organised activities aim to
build relationships between young people and adults and
ultimately empower young people to make healthy decisions
and prevent drug abuse.

Mentor Lithuania
Mentor Sweden
Mentor Lithuania began its work in 2004 and became the
first of the Mentor network to be established in the Baltic
and Central Europe Region.
Mentor Sweden is a Swedish NGO established in 1994
working with a sole focus on health promotion and
prevention of drug abuse among children and young
people in Sweden.
Mentor Lithuania's activities take place in a range of settings
and institutions and are aimed at children and young people
and their caregivers; including parents, grandparents,
guardians, teachers, youth workers, social workers and
health professionals. The key projects for young people are
the mentoring programme, summer camps, and
Unplugged; the school based prevention programme. These
programmes aim to strengthen children and young people’s
life skills, prevent them from using drugs, and promote
healthy life choices and positive social relationships. Mentor
Lithuania also runs parenting programmes that aim to help
parents and carers to develop the skills necessary to protect
children from drugs.
In partnership with Swedish corporations and adult
volunteers from the public, Mentor Sweden manages
three key programmes: Mentoring, Parenting and
Inspirational activities. The activities aim to prevent abuse
by building relationships between young people and adults
and increasing motivation at school.
Mentor Sweden is funded by contributions from
businesses and with this support they spread knowledge
and aim to form public opinion to work preventively
against violence and drug abuse among young people.

Mentor UK
Mentor USA
Through evidence based projects with young people, parents
and carers, schools and grassroots organisations, Mentor UK
improves children's knowledge, skills and self-confidence to
make wise decisions, be healthier and happier, and fulfil their
personal and social potential.
Mentor USA works to reduce risk factors and increase
opportunities for young people through structured mentoring
programmes, one-day career opportunities, and community
campaigns - all developed to bring communities together and
help inspire and motivate young people towards brighter futures.
Mentor UK projects include:
Connecting young people with the professional world not only
helps build new positive relationships, it also helps young people
understand how to be successful and productive citizens of the
21st century.
- London Youth Involvement; where Mentor Advisors
influence top policy makers;
- Breaking Out in Scotland; designed to prevent young
offenders reoffending;
- Alcohol and Reoffending; researching the links between
youth offending and alcohol;
- Families Together; wrap around support for kinship care
families where substance misuse is a common factor in
family breakdown; and
- ADEPIS; offering free expert advice and support on
drug education to schools throughout England.
Mentor USA also offers seminars and workshops for parents,
educators and other community stakeholders. Through a
partnership with the National Institute on Health (NIH) Mentor
USA annually hosts a National Drug Facts Day, to help young
people shatter the myths about substance abuse and become
their own advocates for substance abuse prevention. In 2012,
Mentor USA reached over 50,000 young people.
“My mentor my friend my partner till the
end. When I need a hug she’s there, when
I need to talk she listens. I put my pride
aside, just to make her smile.”
