For Starters...
The Salukis are playing Missouri State after a bye week for the second year in a row. The Salukis have won five of their last
six games coming off a bye week, but the lone loss in the past seven seasons came to Missouri State last year when the Bears
won in a shootout, 51-41. Before last year, bye weeks had treated SIU very well. SIU’s first win over an FBS opponent since
1983, the 2006 win at Indiana, came after a bye week, as did a 27-24 victory over No. 5 Northern Iowa in 2008, head coach
Dale Lennon’s first season in Carbondale. In 2007, the Salukis traveled to Western Illinois after an off week and needed a great
defensive effort to win, 10-9. In head coach Dale Lennon’s second season, SIU rebounded from a 31-28 loss to Marshall two
weeks later with a blowout 59-7 win over Southwest Baptist.
The Missouri State Bears
Missouri State enters the game 0-3 but battle tested.
The Bears are one of two Missouri Valley Football
Conference schools to take on two FBS schools this
season. Both of the Bears’ FBS opponents, Oregon
and Arkansas, are nationally ranked in the top 15.
No other team at any level, including the FBS, has
played two non-conference opponents ranked in the
top 15 through Week Three. The Bears only return
nine starters from last year’s squad, but converted
wide receiver Trevor Wooden set a school record for
yards in a debut with 262 yards passing. He added
another 69 yards on the ground to end with 333 yards
of total offense.

Last year, Missouri State went 5-6, including a 4-4 mark in the MVFC to tie SIU and four
other schools for third place in the conference. The Bears went 5-0 at home and 0-6 on the
road. The Bears haven’t won a road game since Oct. 24, 2009.
SIU vs. Missouri State - The Series
SIU looks to tie the series with a win on Saturday, trailing the all-time series 16-17.
Missouri State dominated the series between 1984 and 2002, winning 16 of 19 games, but
SIU won seven straight from 2003-2009 to even the series at 16.
Last year, the Salukis put up 41 points in Springfield, Mo., but they surrendered 51 points,
the most points allowed by the Salukis since 2005. Combined, the teams had 970 yards of
offense and 92 points. SIU couldn’t overcome three turnovers and a 348-yard passing day
from Missouri State’s quarterback, Cody Kirby.
Swanson earns two National Player of the Week honors
Junior nose tackle Kayon Swanson earned national recognition for his effort in SIU’s loss
to Ole Miss. Swanson recorded career highs in sacks (2.0), tackles (8) and tackles for loss
(3.0) against Ole Miss. He helped SIU hold the Rebels to 315 yards of total offense.
The College Football Performance Awards, which are formulated based on scientific
ratings to determine to what extent an individual helped his team, acknowledged Swanson
as both a defensive lineman performer of the week and national defensive performer of

the week, sharing both honors with Illinois State’s Eric Brunner. Swanson was also one of
six National Defensive Players of the Week by the Beyond Sports Network. He was one
of two defensive linemen chosen, along with Maine’s Michael Cole.
Homefield Advantage
Over the last eight seasons, Southern Illinois has posted a 41-4 (.911) record at home in
regular season games. Included in that period is a 26-3 record in Missouri Valley Football
Conference games. If you add in home playoff games, the Salukis are 45-8 (.849) overall
in Carbondale since 2003. SIU had a couple of home winning streaks snapped last season.
It’s loss to Southeast Missouri State on Sept. 18, 2010 was Southern’s first home nonconference defeat since 2002 (16 games). That loss also ended a 19-game home winning
streak in regular season games. Then on Oct. 16 when South Dakota State defeated SIU
31-10 in Saluki Stadium, that loss snapped a 13-game home winning streak in Missouri
Valley Football Conference games. The longest home winning streak of all games
(including the playoffs) is 12 games, which spanned from 2003-04.
Strother leads potent rushing attack
Steve Strother has been the Saluki’s leading rusher in each of the first two games, even
though he has only 19 carries on the season. With 197 yards, Strother is averaging 10.4
yards per carry, which is second the nation. Strother broke off a career-high 74-yard run
against Mississippi, which was longer than any rush the Salukis had last year. Strother’s
big-play ability has opened up the Saluki playbook, helping the offense lead the Valley in
total offense.
Salukis boast balanced offensive attack
SIU’s offense is much improved in the second year under offensive coordinator Kalen
DeBoer. The Salukis lead the conference in total offense and are ranked in the top 15
nationally in total offense. The attack is almost perfectly balanced with 463 yards rushing
(50.7%) and 451 yards passing. The team has found big plays in both the rushing game
(74 and 62-yard TD rushes for Strother) and the passing game (70 and 31-yard TD passes
from Paul McIntosh to Cam Fuller). DeBoer has spread out his weapons. SIU has three
players with at least 19 rushes and seven players with at least two receptions. Because of
the diverse offensive attack, defenses can never count the Salukis out. The Salukis have
averaged 25 yards per play on third downs of 11 yards or more, and they are converting
on 60% of their attempts on third and long.
The balanced attack proved trouble for Ole Miss. SIU outgained the Rebels by more
than 100 yards and won almost every offensive category. The team won battles for time
of possession, first downs, rushing yardage and passing yardage. Ole Miss only gave up
more than 420 yards of total offense twice last season, including once against eventual
national champion Auburn.
McIntosh Carrying On Strong Saluki QB Tradition
Junior Paul McIntosh started his junior campaign with a bang.
McIntosh was named the starting Saluki quarterback after battling
for the position with Kory Faulkner and A.J. Hill throughout spring
drills and fall camp. McIntosh played in relief of Chris Dieker in
each of the past two seasons. When Dieker was injured in the 2009
season, McIntosh led the Salukis to a No. 1 national ranking and
a second-straight conference championship, going 5-1 as a starter.
McIntosh earned MVFC Offensive Player of the Week in his first
career start, leading the Salukis to a 33-0 shutout of Indiana State.
His 588 rushing yards in 2009 is a Saluki season record for a
Paul McIntosh
quarterback.
In his first game as the Saluki full-time starter, McIntosh threw for a career-high 246
yards, completing 14-18 passes. The 210.91 passing efficiency rating was the second
highest in the country, behind only NC A&T’s Lewis Kindle. McIntosh also ran for 65
yards, moving him into second place in Saluki history in rushing yards for a quarterback.

2011 Saluki Captains
Bryan Boemer, Connor James,
Mike McElroy, Paul McIntosh
McIntosh takes over a strong quarterback tradition at SIU. The past three starters (Joel
Sambursky, 2002-05; Nick Hill, 2005-07; Chris Dieker, 2007-10) are among the top four
career passers in Saluki history.
McIntosh has proved dangerous with his feet, too. He has only been sacked one time, a
loss of one yard in the last minute of the Ole Miss game. Before the bye week, McIntosh
was eighth in the conference in rushing yards, including all players. He’s rushed for 145
yards in two games and is just another 145 from breaking Joel Sambursky’s school record
for rushing yards by a quarterback.
Offense Scores in Variety of Ways
The Salukis displayed an ability to both score quickly and sustain long drives. Of the
10 scoring drives this season, five have been in five plays or fewer and five have been
in 10 plays or more. The Salukis showed an ability to sustain drive against the toughest
defenses, posting three 10+-play drives at Ole Miss, including a 16-yard drive that was
capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Jewel Hampton. SIU also had two long drives in
the season opener against SEMO.
The Salukis also have five drives that were quick strikes. Against SEMO, eight players
contributed a big play. Paul McIntosh threw a 70-yard touchdown bomb to Cam Fuller
and Steve Strother sprinted 62 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.
Mississippi proved no different. After a Rebel turnover, SIU scored on the first play, a 31yard touchdown strike from McIntosh to Fuller.
Defense Starts Season Strong
The defense has opened the season well, ranking second in the conference in total
defense. By allowing only 288.0 yards per game, the Salukis are more than 50 yards per
game better than the third-best total defense team. They recorded nine tackles for loss
at Ole Miss, the most for a Saluki team since it played Missouri State last year. Twelve
players have contributed to a tackle for loss.
SIU Starts Season on the Road
SIU plays three of its first four games on the road this season. The last time that happened
was in 1999 under head coach Jan Quarless. SIU won its first three, but ended up winning
just two games the rest of the season to finish 5-6. That 1999 team opened up the season
with a 43-25 win at Southeast Missouri State, the same school SIU opens up with this year
on the road. Southern Illinois last opened a season on the road in 2009, when the Dawgs
fell 31-28 at Marshall. In 2005, 2001 and 1999, the Salukis opened the year at SEMO. SIU
won, 58-23 in 2005, won 43-25 in 1999, but fell 24-5 in 2001. The Salukis have a 6-8 alltime record against SEMO when playing them in a season opener, but are 5-1 since 1995
(including a 4-1 mark in season openers at Hauck Stadium).
Salukis Black Out Cancer
The Southern Illinois football program has teamed up with the
American Cancer Society in an effort to Black Out Cancer. SIU
will be wearing special one-time-only black Under Armour
jerseys for the Nov. 12 home game against Eastern Illinois,
which was been dubbed the Black Out Cancer Game. The idea
is the brainchild of senior safety Mike McElroy. McElroy was
responsible for petitioning the NCAA and to obtain a one-time

McElroy Returns
Mike McElroy was granted a fifth season by the NCAA when it granted him a medical
redshirt for the 2010 season. McElroy suffered a severe ankle injury in the second
game of the season at Illinois and he missed
the rest of the year. His return to the Saluki D

the most outstanding defensive player in the
FCS. McElroy played right away as a true
freshman for SIU in 2007 and he has since appeared in 41 games and made 29 starts. The
quarterback of the defense, McElroy is in charge of lining up the secondary. He enters
the 2011 season with 174 tackles and 11 interceptions, which is tied for the sixth most in
school history.
McElroy named Good Works Nominee
Fifth-year senior safety Mike McElroy was named a 2011 Allstate American Football
Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team nominee. In addition to spearheading
the effort for the Black Out Cancer game, McElroy helps kids that come from
underprivileged families through the Saluki Head Start program, reads to children at
local hospitals, leads a Vine Small Group at his local church in Carbondale and does
speaking engagements for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
McElroy was one of 132 athletes from both the FBS and BCS were nominated. Two
11-person teams, one FBS team and one FCS team, will be announced in late September.
Experienced in the Trenches
Southern Illinois returns nine letterwinners from the 2010 team. The nine letterwinners
have combined to start in 88 games over their careers with 81 of those starts coming from
the returning starters. The group is led by preseason All-Americans Bryan Boemer (center)
and David Pickard (left tackle). Both players have started in every game over the past two
seasons and were All-Conference selections each year. Southern Illinois averaged 189.5
rushing yards per game in 2010, but the group has made it a goal to average over 200 yards
this season. The depth has already proved valuable. Guard and returning starter George
Danilkowicz has missed the first two games with an injury, but he has a chance to see
action against Missouri State.
Winning the Turnover Margin
One of the staples to SIU’s success has been winning the turnover margin. In 2008 when
the Salukis went 9-3 and won a share of the league crown, Southern Illinois finished the
year plus-8 in turnover margin, which tied for No. 21 in the nation. The next year, SIU
finished with a 11-2 record and won the league title outright with a 8-0 league record. The
success in 2009 was backed behind a plus-17 turnover margin and that was the fifth-best
in the nation. Last year during a 5-6 campaign, the Salukis had a reversal of fortunes and
finished minus-7 in the turnover department. With a veteran group returning, Southern
Illinois looks to get back on the plus-side of the turnover battle.

This-N-That
• SIU is 1-1 on the road, which already matches the road win total from last year. From
2003-09, the Salukis had a 28-12 road record, which includes playoff games.
• The entire coaching staff from the 2010 season remained intact over the summer.

• SIU plays three of its first four games on the road this season. The last time that
happened was 1999 under head coach Jan Qarless. SIU won its first three games but
ended up winning just two more the rest of the season and finished 5-6. That 1999
team opened the season with a 43-25 win against SEMO.
• SIU plays a non-conference game in the month of November (Nov. 12 vs. Eastern
Illinois) for the first time since 2009. The last five seasons in which SIU has played
a non-conference game in November (2005-09), the Salukis have won at least nine
games each year. SIU is 9-6 in November non-conference games over the last 20
seasons.
• The Salukis have had 12 first team All-Americans over the past 10 seasons, and
five of those have been running backs.
• SIU’s three Academic All-Americans in 2010 tied with Penn State for the most
in the nation. Joe Allaria and Chance Coda were named to the first team while
David Pickard was a second team selection. Throw in Mike McElroy’s second team
selection in 2009, and SIU has had four Academic All-Americans in the last two
seasons.
• Southern Illinois’ average attendance of 10,890 last year, its first in Saluki Stadium,
was the school’s highest average attendance since averaging 12,225 fans in 1991.
Back in the Rankings
After being ranked for 99 straight weeks, SIU dropped out of the rankings for last
five weeks of the 2010 season. SIU started 2011 back in the top 25 in both the
FCS Coaches Poll and Sports Network Media Poll. The Salukis checked in at No.
19 in the first TSN poll, marking the eighth consecutive year the Salukis earned a
preseason ranking from TSN. The following week, the FCS Coaches Poll tabbed
the Salukis No. 17. The Salukis have moved up to No. 15 in both polls. Under head
coach Dale Lennon, the team is 24-10 as a ranked team and 18-4 against unranked
FCS teams.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - No. 17-ranked Southern Illinois was unstoppable by land and by air during a 38-10 win over Southeast Missouri State on Saturday in the season opener for both schools.
OXFORD, Miss. - Mississippi held off a resilient Southern Illinois team, winning 42-24 and avoiding
an upset at the hands of a Football Subdivision Championship opponent.
The Salukis (1-0) compiled 240 yards rushing and 254 yards passing, nearly doubling up the Redhawks
(0-1) in total yardage.
At first it looked like things would be easy for the Rebels (1-1), who were beaten a year ago by Jacksonville State in double overtime. Ole Miss staggered Southern with three touchdowns in the first six minutes of the game. Jeff Scott scored on runs of 37 and four yards, and then added a 67-yard punt return.
A year after SEMO rallied from a 17-point second-half deficit to stun SIU, 24-21, there was never any
hint of an upset brewing in the hot, humid air of Houck Stadium.
On the second play from scrimmage, Saluki tailback Steve Strother broke a 62-yard touchdown run
down the right sideline.
“Everybody knew that we were going to come out and make a statement on the first drive,” Strother
said. “That early score really set the tone.”
While Strother totaled 100 yards combined rushing and receiving, Iowa transfer Jewel Hampton was
equally as effective out of the Saluki backfield. Playing in his first game in more than a year because of
a knee injury, Hampton pounded the ball between the tackles for 64 yards and three touchdowns.
Southern’s veteran offensive line produced a consistent surge for a Saluki running game that averaged
5.2 yards per carry.
“The line did whatever they wanted to tonight,” Strother said. “Any run play that we wanted to call,
inside zone-outside zone, they did it all night.”
Orchestrating the Saluki attack was quarterback Paul McIntosh. After the ground game bruised the
Redhawks defense, McIntosh burned it deep. He completed 14-of-18 passes for a career-high 246
yards. He had pass completions of 70 yards (Cam Fuller), 31 yards (MyCole Pruitt), 30 yards (LaSteven
McKinney) and 28 yards.
“Paul had something to prove,” Lennon said. “A lot of people were wondering if he’s the guy who
can do it. Paul has improved his game over the course of the off-season. He’s throwing the ball more
confidently. He has arm strength. His accuracy is pretty good and he still has the feet to hurt you with
the run.”
In an odd coincidence, the Salukis led 14-3 halftime, just like last year. But this time, they slammed the
door shut on SEMO, outscoring it, 24-7, in the second half. The scoring included TD runs of 23 and 7
yards by Hampton and a 70-yard touchdown strike from McIntosh to Fuller.
Southern’s defense smothered the SEMO option attack throughout the game, holding a trio of running
backs to 19 yards on 14 carries. Nose tackle Kayon Swanson was a force inside, tying a career-high
six tackles.
“I thought our nose guard play was pretty special,” Saluki head coach Dale Lennon said. “Kayon made
life tough in the middle and there were a lot of times you saw him in the backfield.”
“To give up 21 points in five minutes is a team’s worst nightmare,” Saluki head coach Dale Lennon
said. “It took a while for us to settle in to the type of game we needed to play. Unfortunately we spotted
them 21 before we did it.”
Trailing 28-3 late in the first half, SIU finally hit its stride, marching 80 yards on 16 plays as Jewel
Hampton scored from two yards out to make it 28-10 at halftime.
The Salukis (1-1) made things interesting in the second half. Paul McIntosh threw touchdown passes
to Rik Hicks and Cam Fuller. The 31-yard strike to Fuller was a spectacular throw and catch and drew
SIU to within 35-24 with 6:30 remaining in the game.
“We thought we could take some shots and make some big pass plays down the field,” Lennon said.
“Offensively, I know we have the tools to be successful.”
There were many positives in the loss, not the least of which was out-gaining the Rebels in total offense,
420-315. Four interceptions and bad field position were Southern’s worst enemies.
“This loss stings,” Lennon said. “It’s one where our locker room, we know we let an opportunity slip
away here. We were capable of doing more than what we did.”
The run game was potent, totaling 197 yards. Steve Strother had 116 yards rushing for Southern and
McIntosh added 80.
“We ran the ball well and the line blocked well,” Strother said. “They were opening up holes all night.
The linebackers were coming hard, and our guys were moving them out of the way.”
Turnovers put Southern’s defense on a short field too many times, but Lennon liked the way it responded.
“They were put in many, many bad situations,” he said. “They came away enough times successful that
you can feel good about things you’re doing defensively.”
Nose tackle Kayon Swanson had another huge game for the Salukis, leading the team with eight tackles
and two sacks, before leaving the game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.
“Football is a game of runs and Ole Miss had the momentum early,” said Saluki safety Mike McElroy.
“I think we kind of settled down and realized we could hang with these guys.”
For a team that had question marks at numerous positions, Lennon was happy with the answers he got
on opening day.
“I think we gave a little glimpse of the type of season we can have,” he said.
