February Newsletter - High Plains Community Schools
Issue 6 Volume 16 February 2016 From the Desk of Superintendent Brian Tonniges Greetings from the Storm!! Many great things are happening at HPC. Our winter activities are experiencing tremendous success and are heading into the final part of their seasons and preparing for district and state competitions. The HPC speech team has begun their competition season and is sending every chance they get to practice. The school board is working hard at identifying facility projects for this summer, and our students and staff are gearing up for state testing. Each year districts are required to report data, such as test scores, teacher experience, and finances, to its stakeholders. Early in January, a group of students and myself distributed these posters to various community businesses as a way of sharing this data with our communities. The ‘Annual Report’ is also included in this newsletter. Please take time to look it over. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Several pieces of data provide a snapshot into HPC. Our high school and middle school students continue to score well above the state average in the Statewide Reading and Math tests. Last year’s juniors scored a 100% on the statewide math. HPC students, who take the ACT, score one full point above the state average. HPC’s student-teacher ratio provides small group instruction and pays closer attention to individual students and their progress. The relationships formed between staff and students create a unique setting that leads to the ultimate academic experience. HPC teachers bring a wealth of experience to the classroom and are well above the state average in teaching experience. Although below the state average, more and more HPC teachers are furthering their education and obtaining a master’s degree. Dual credit classes are offered to our HPC juniors and seniors, and if a specific path is followed, they can enter college with one semester of college credits received. I am pleased to say that our students continue to work hard and seem to take it all in stride. During the past two months we have had our speech team hard at work preparing for their season, basketball teams playing non-stop, and wrestling action that started with another successful Storm Invite. It is a very busy time right now for our students, and they should be commended for the time and effort they put into their academics and extra-curricular activities. It is with great pride that our students and faculty represent what Storm Nation is all about. As we get closer to spring and the schedule gets even busier, I would like to remind everyone that its important for our students to stay ahead of the game when it comes to their academics. The teachers at High Plains are willing to help their students, but proper communication is important. If a student has missed class, it is important that they communicate with their teachers and work hard to remain caught up with daily assignments. Also, we encourage each student to communicate with their teachers BEFORE they are going to be gone to find out what work will need to be completed, and to get that homework completed in a timely manner. We have too many students who talk to a teacher the day before they are leaving. I know from experience that this puts the teacher in a bind and does not make a good impression. Encourage your students to take responsibility and communicate with their teachers. We have implemented the Alert Solutions messaging system over the past 3 months with success. As we look towards the 2nd half of the school year, please let us know if you are not getting messages or need a number changed. With a new system there have been a few bugs – but we want to make sure that everyone gets the messages that we do send out – especially regarding winter weather and school closing information. At the start of the 2nd semester, we again registered HPC students for online or distance learning courses for college credit. This is a great way for our juniors and seniors to get a head start on taking their elective courses prior to setting foot on the college campus of their choice. This semester our students have registered for the following courses: Sociology, Public Speaking, Pre-Calculus, Creative Writing, and Expository Writing. These courses are offered through our Distance Learning program from the following colleges: Peru State College, Central Community College – Columbus, UNL, Mid-Plains Community College, and NCTA-Curtis. We will have at least 5 students graduate HPC this year with at least 12 credits. Hopefully as we get closer to spring, the weather continues to cooperate with us and we can enjoy the last 4 months of school even more. As always, do not hesitate to call the school with any questions you might have. I look forward to the opportunity to visit with you. February 2016 Page 4 Monthly Forecast Notes from Mrs. LeSuer Research has shown that parental involvement is the most important factor in a student’s success in school, especially during elementary and middle school years. As a partner in education I would like to remind parents of the upcoming parent-teacher conferences scheduled for February 11. MS and HS conferences will be held from 2:00-8:00 and K-5 as scheduled; elementary parents - please watch for scheduling information that will be coming home. Although parents have 24/7 access to their child’s grades through Power School, every time you attend a parent-teacher conference, you learn more about your child and strengthen the link with your child’s school. Attending an individual conference will be an excellent opportunity for you to visit with your child’s teachers and learn what students have been studying, as well as concerns and successes observed in the classroom. We look forward to sharing great things on the 11th….see you then!!! To get the most out of parent-teacher conferences, be prepared to listen as well as to talk. During the conference, the teacher should offer specific details about your child’s work and progress. It may be helpful to write down questions ahead of time and visit with your child to see if he or she has any special concerns or questions he/she would like you to discuss or clarify with the teacher. Samples of questions you may want to consider are: • • • • Is my child working up to his/her potential? Does my child participate in class or group discussions? How does my child interact with peers? Does my child turn in his or her homework on time? If you are unable to attend parent-teacher conferences, the teachers and I welcome parent involvement YEAR-ROUND! Feel free to call and schedule a phone or in-person conference any time you think there is a need. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to give me a call! GO STORM!!! CRIME DOES NOT PAY CRIME STOPPERS DOES POLK COUNTY CRIME STOPPERS and the Polk County Sheriff’s Deptartment work together to help prevent and solve crime in our communities and schools throughout the county. CASH REWARDS (up to $1,000) could be given to persons providing information leading to the arrest of criminals. When calling to report your tips, the phone does not have caller ID and conversations are not recorded, therefore, you remain anonymous. It has required 32 panels of insulated glass and 32 yards of concrete. The greenhouse is almost done and has stayed under the budget of $45,000. The only thing left is the wiring, which Jamie Hans of Clarks will do. The FFA kids, Tom Hoffman, and Patrick Siemek have all put a lot of hard work into this and have gone from a seventy square foot greenhouse to an 864 square foot green house, with 360 square feet for just table space. Teacher Tom Hoffman has not only put in 300 hours of his time during the day to work on the greenhouse, but he has worked around 100 hours of his own personal time after school. Along with that, fellow teacher Patrick Siemek has also put in 250 hours of his time during the day and hours of his own time. And we cannot forget the amount of time the students and any others who helped put into this project that is nearing its end. Thank you for your help in providing another learning environment for the students of HPC. Wilshusen Places at National Convention Bryce Wilshusen has represented the High Plains FFA chapter at multiple venues this school year. At the Nebraska State Fair this last year, Bryce received a blue ribbon and was selected to compete at the National FFA Dairy Handlers Contest at the FFA National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, in October. He was the first representative from HPC to be chosen to show livestock at the national convention. At the National Dairy Handling Contest, Bryce placed second overall out of 29 competitors from 39 states. For this accomplishment, Lt. Governor Mike Foley and Education Commissioner Matt Blomstedt recognized Bryce at a ceremony at the State Capitol Rotunda late last year. Congratulations Bryce on this impressive accomplishment! They didn’t just keep the joy of giving in class though. They asked ALL K-3 and 6-8 students to take part in their challenge! The first part of the challenge was to collect the most food items to be donated. There was also a second part to the challenge because Enrichment is based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. For this part of the competition, every student in K-3 and 6-8 was on a mixed-age team. Each team was challenged to create the most unique and identifiable structure out of the food they collected. Teams built anything from a Christmas tree and presents to a grain elevator- wherever the team’s creativity and food supplies took them! The amazing generosity of our communities and students shone through as 660 items weighing 591.5 pounds were brought to school to be donated. Thank you to everyone for supporting our students’ efforts to give! This Christmas tree and presents won the food drive competition for most items donated and was also voted as best design. Monthly Forecast February 2016 Page 17 “It’s Not About Me” Class Gives Back In a new class introduced this year, middle school students are learning that there is more to life than thinking only of themselves. In Karen Benner’s class entited “It’s Not About Me,” first semester students have participated in a variety of activities to better the Clarks community. The class brainstormed community service ideas and then voted on which to perform. Activities in the first semester for the 6th grade class included: raking leaves for a Clarks resident, helping at the public library by raking leaves and scraping paint, washing windows at the Clarks Villa, sending cards to wounded soldiers, and caroling. The 8th grade participated during their quarter of this class by making a presentation to the Clarks Town Board about their desire to beautify Clarks. The board made suggestions, and they began working. These suggestions included decorating straw bales to decorate the outside of the school and cleaning the curbside of the streets. They stayed busy and made a HUGE difference in the appearance of the streets of the town. In completing these projects, these students gain the satifaction of helping others and can see how their small contributions help to make our community a better place. New Wood Shop Equipment The High Plains Community Schools wood shop has recently acquired a new piece of equipment that allows you to carve designs and objects out of wood and other semi-hard material. This equipment is called a CNC Shark Router Table, which is valued at approximately $4,300. This was partially paid with a Perkins Grant Fun of $2,500. The CNC Shark Router Table uses software provided to sketch up what you are going to carve and automatically calculates the lines of code for you. A student project that was recently made was approximately a 6x6 design and consisted of around 22,000 lines of code. It mounts a normal router, so almost any router bit can be used to make your desired design. The machine has a size limit, which is approximately 32x26½. “EVENING WITH THE STORM” 1st ANNUAL FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER With MASTER of CEREMONIES: Jim Rose, Former Husker Play-by-Play Announcer HORDVILLE EVENT CENTER MARCH 19th, 2016 FUND RAISING GOAL: $20,000 5:00 p.m. Social Hour, Appetizers and Silent Auction Tables Open 5:30 p.m. -7:30 p.m. Silent Auction Bids Accepted 6:00 p.m. Prime Rib Dinner 7:30 p.m. Silent Auction Winners Announced Live Auction After Dinner - Kenny Rieken, Auctioneer TICKETS are $30 - Table of 8 is $200 Make Checks to TRI-COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Cameron Hudson Paul and Tammy Van Housen John Kucera Tickets NOW ON SALE from: Kent and Breanne Helgoth Tom Hofmann Pat Siemek Shane Van Pelt Pat and Tammy McNaught Nate and Niki Spurling Sheri Wruble You can also contact the High School Office at 402-765-3331 ALL PROCEEDS DONATED TO THE FOLLOWING BENEFICIARIES: Communities Of Polk, Hordville, And Clarks HPC Hall Of Fame Storm Youth Sports HPC Foundation Scholarships (2) Community Summer Recreation Programs HPC School Outdoor Beautification Projects AUCTION ITEMS NOW BEING ACCEPTED BY: Cameron Hudson Paul Van Housen Kent and Breanne Helgoth John Kucera Tom Hofmann Pat Siemek Ticket orders also be placed on the foundation website…. tri-communityfoundation.weebly.com “EVENING WITH THE STORM” 1st ANNUAL FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER With MASTER of CEREMONIES: Jim Rose, Former Husker Play-by-Play Announcer HORDVILLE EVENT CENTER MARCH 19th, 2016 WANTED AUCTION ITEMS (Suggested Auction Items) Service related items (cleaning, babysitting, cooking) Tickets for entertainment activities Vacation getaways Sports memorabilia Holiday crafts or gift items Tools Custom work This is a great way for everyone to be involved in this unique fund-raising opportunity.
