ISSUE 153
From the Editor
Tuesday 4 November - Club Night at Drusillas
Days are certainly shortening now and
autumn colours are being more & more
obvious around us. Still hope you are
getting out & about on the sunnier days
before the lights go on.
Please remember the club night on Tuesday 4th November has returned to
Drusilla’s for the winter. We are hoping to finalise next years calendar of events so
please think about ideas for runs you’d like to do, also what sort of things you’d like
to happen on Tuesday club nights.
Pam Cooper is organising the Sunday
Lunch on 19 November. Do get in
touch with her asap if you are
interested and have not already booked.
Wednesday 19th November
Visit to the Royal Navy Submarine Museum Gosport. PO12 2AS
For those going to the NEC for the
Classic Car Show - have a good time.
Happy MX5 Motoring!
Congratulations Roger
At the recent AGM of the MX5OC
Roger Mead was confirmed as the
Chairman for a fourth consecutive year
by the Committee.
Well done Roger - this means you will
get your photo on the first page of
STHT for another 12 months!
Competition Winners!
Moira & Ian Anders entered the
competition in STHT and won
complimentary tickets to the Classic
Car Show at the NEC!
Have a good day there both of you.
(submarine –museum .co.uk)
Please note the date has moved to the 19th for access reasons.
HMS Alliance and indeed the museum, which sits in Haslar creek on the entrance to
Portsmouth harbour, has received a multi million pound upgrade is even more impressive than before. The Alliance is now fully refurbished and the on-board effects
are great. She is the last of WW11 A class boats.
The museum itself follows the development of submarines from day one to days fleet
of nuclear powered and armed boats. Many exhibits are hands on and range from
propulsion to periscopes. You can take as little or as long to as you like to stroll
around.
The suggested arrangements for the day are:
Meet from 10am on at the Eastbound Rownhams services on the M27 Southampton.
We will leave here at 11am prompt as we need to be at the museum at 12 noon . I will
provide route details on day.
The entry cost is £9 for seniors or £ 11 for others. We will then have a conducted tour
of the boat, note not ship, by and ex submariner.
After the tour you are basically free to roam the museum at will. The is a light snacks
facility on site or if you prefer there is a very reasonable Bar-Bistro just over Haslar
bridge.
If you do leave the museum site you can leave your car in the museum CP or use the
public CP next to the Bar-Bistro, the bar will issue a ticket for free parking.
I would appreciate letting us know if you intend coming as the tour groups are
limited, you can only have so many into a submarine at any one time, therefore
we many have to have more that one tour.
We have provisional booked for up to 20 people. [email protected]

Another instalment in the saga of Pat & Martin`s Red Devils
Pat & Martin Goodfellow decided to go on holiday to Guernsey. While they were there they met up with Guernsey residents and
Wessex friends Cliff & Babs Le Cras. They made plans to go out for a meal together - however……………...Pat continues the
story:While we were having our meal with Cliff and Babs the head chef appeared with a large soup tureen. He lifted the lid to reveal
one devil plus loads of meat bones all neatly cleaned of meat. The staff and guest were all amused at this. So where did this one
come from.? No one knows the story here. And no car with it in. We think he may be French. We have named him “Rob the
Gurn” as we are in Guernsey and Robert is the name of the owner of the hotel we are staying in.
Pat & Matin meet up with a friend in Guernsey!!
MX5 OC Calendar 2015
The Calendar is enjoyed by our many thousands of members and is sent out free with the December edition of Soft Top Hardtop to
every member and to all our Club partners and sponsors.
Every year we ask Club members to send in photographs for inclusion in the Calendar and images are invited from all members no
matter what level of photographic ability you have, from beginner to professional all images are welcome and using whatever photographic equipment you have.
All that we ask is that images are of the highest possible resolution that you are able to submit, the higher the resolution of the image the better it is for printing in the calendar.
If selected for a particular month in the 2015 Calendar your image will be reproduced in close to 7000 calendars that we hear every
year make it on to the walls in homes, offices, workshops and garages across the country as well as further afield!

Magna Mazda Technical Evening
Tuesday club night was a technical meeting
held a Magna Mazda, Canford Cliffs; it turned out to be
very informative. A club member’s car was picked to
demonstrate how to perform basic tasks and how to use
the repair kit to plug a puncture in order to get you home.
Mark, a senior technician, showed how and
where to jack up a car in order to be able to remove a
wheel, how to check the thickness of the brake pads, and
how to replace them.
Then a wheel/tyre set was brought in with a puncture. We were shown how to prepare the tyre for the glue by removing
the tyre valve and the function of the contents of the repair kit. For this demonstration an old, out of date by 3 years, glue was used.
The glue failed to do its job! The fact that it failed was a revelation to all present. We now know that the expiry date on the label
means what it says. Now the staff at Magna knows how important it is to appropriately advise their customers and the club members, with cars not having spare wheels, will check the date on their kits.
This night was also chosen for the presentation of a cheque to the Lewis Manning Hospice. When Jean Tulloch so
successfully ran the Summer Party at the North Haven Yacht Club in June £600 pounds was raised. Members had put their
hands deeply into their pockets to support this worthy cause. Many of the prizes for the auction were donated by Barney
Steele and Magna Mazda. Louise, representing Lewis Manning, was there to receive the cheque from Jean.
With the formalities and demonstrations over Barney invited all present to enjoy the buffet with the added comment that
Magna Mazda at Canford Cliffs will, if possible, price match on parts, service, MoTs, and replacement tyres. Good news eh?
A fun, informative, and tasty evening with a charitable twist was enjoyed by all attendees. On behalf of the club members
our thanks go to Jean, Barney, Mark, Simon, and James. Personally I find the technical evenings to be both interesting and beneficicial.

Sunday 19 October
Visit to Sturminster Newton Mill
12 cars assembled in the car park of Tesco, Blandford ready
for the Drive to Sturminster Mill. Good to see a few new faces
and hope they enjoyed the day well enough to meet up again.
There had been a lot of rain in the few days before so the country lanes Vic & Gill had chosen were a trifle muddy!!
The Mill was new to most people. It is now in the hands of a
Heritage Preservation Trust and they are certainly doing a very
good job. We were welcomed by a very keen and knowledgeable
guide who showed us around and gave detailed information about
how the grain is eventually turned into flour.
Everyone gets parked up with another
chance to exchange stories of the drive.
I don't know who the suspicious character is
standing on the mill veranda - ghost of a
miller perhaps?
A short walk from the Mill to the lunch
venue - “The Bull” alongside the beautiful
stone bridge across the river.
Thank you Vic & Gill for such an
interesting and picturesque visit.
