garden news & views Introducing… Sweet Peet Beneficial Bugs Move Into Meadow View Neither traditional mulch nor soil amendment, Sweet Peet is a natural, versatile, nutritious, 100% organic material made from virgin wood products, manure and plant fibers. It differs from many mulches and soil amendments because it contains no human waste, junk wood or chemicals. Some bugs like other bugs so much, they have them for dinner. In an attempt to find new ways to reduce pesticide use, Meadow View will devote 6,000 square feet of greenhouse space to observe how well this form of natural pest control works. Specific insects will be introduced to see if they can effectively control four major greenhouse pests and significantly reduce chemical use. If the trial is successful, integrated pest management, led by Randy Burchyett and Dave Rhodes, will be implemented in all of our greenhouses. What’s Hot At Meadow View: SPRING 2012 Vegetable Gardening No longer a trend, vegetable gardening has become a lifestyle component that allows more people to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Freshly harvested, home-grown vegetables provide safe, healthy food for families and can be grown just about anywhere, whether you live in an urban, suburban or rural area. Whether you choose to begin your garden from seeds or plants, or to grow hybrids or heirlooms, Meadow View’s got you covered from garden to table. Tree Seedling Distribution by Clark County Soil & Water Conservation District Meadow View will assist CCSWCD with their annual distribution of deciduous and evergreen tree packets by having trees available at our location on April 7 from 10 am until 2 pm. The trees will be sold at their cost, which is very reasonable for the 12” to 18” seedlings sold in packages of 3 to 5 seedlings, dependent upon variety. Drought Smart Plants These are some of the gardening world’s most forgiving plants. Succulents, sedums and cacti have gained popularity in recent years because these water-wise plants are easy to grow and require little maintenance. With a wide assortment of foliage colors, textures, and flowers, these versatile plants are happy in sun to partial-sun locations. Drought smart plants will grow in just about any container as long as you provide adequate soil and drainage. Trees can be ordered in advance or purchased on a first come basis. Call the CCSWCD office at 521-3880 for more information. Meadow View is offering this service to help the conservation effort in Clark County. Sweet Peet’s secret is that it supplies nitrogen in a slow release form to your plants. It also fosters the multiplication of beneficial and necessary soil organisms such as mycorrhizae, rhizobacteria and earthworms. the garden view Garden Trends The Small but Mighty World of Miniature Gardens Miniature gardens are all about creating an entirely new world – your own pocket-sized secret garden. The small gardens allow you to create a garden you’d love to walk through yourself, complete with plants, benches, forest creatures and animal life. You can devise clever themes or designs that reflect your personality and style, telling your personal story with plants. While not a new concept, gardening in miniature is quickly becoming one of the most popular gardening hobbies. It can be a place to experiment, play and express your creativity and can be created on any scale you choose using bird baths, bowls or wheelbarrows to hold your work. Meadow View carries a full selection of miniature garden plants, accents, fairies, gnomes and other interesting accessories. You can create your own mini garden or purchase a kit to get started. Growing your plants in containers is the most versatile of gardening options. Containers can be any size, color or shape, can be situated depending on the plants’ varying sun or shade light requirements, and contain creative and unusual foliage and color combinations. Moveable and easy to maintain, containers are a perfect low-effort way to garden. In Meadow View’s container gardening greenhouse, resident expert Barb Willens has plants that are divided according to their sun/shade needs and function (what she calls ‘thrillers, fillers and spillers’). There are many pre-planted container gardens to choose from and planting “recipes” for the do-it-yourselfer. Pottery is available in a wide range of colors, shapes and sizes. Be sure to join us at one of our container gardening workshops. Our Favorite Tool This year’s container gardening trends include herbs, vegetables, terrariums, succulents, vertical gardening, mini gardens and giant tropical planters. Tangerine is the Pantone color for 2012. When you venture out to dig in the dirt, don’t be without our staff favorite – the soil knife. “Containers, unlike major landscape investments, allow for experimentation, so have at it,” says Barb. “If a color or texture doesn’t end up looking the way you’d hoped, just pop it out and try again.” Manufactured in Italy, this gardening tool seems basic, but is tough and versatile. Allowing you to do more than a regular trowel, the soil knife is effective when transplanting annuals and perennials, completing divisions, cutting back foliage, breaking up dirt clods and removing weeds. For less than $25, you’ll be glad to own this invaluable addition to your tool shed. It’s like the ginsu knife of gardening. Page 2 The Garden View • Spring 2012 Best Bets and New Selections Meadow View’s 2012 Proven Performer Each year our staff chooses a ‘Proven Performer’ annual plant that thrives with minimal care and maintenance. These varieties are tested and proven in our landscape display gardens and in our own gardens. This year, the staff at Meadow View has chosen Salvia guaranitica ‘Black and Blue.’ This plant makes a bold statement with its cobalt blue blooms and almost-black stems, growing to a mature height of 36-48 inches. Blooming relentlessly all season from early summer to frost, ‘Black and Blue’ is drought-tolerant once established, making it an excellent choice for containers and flower beds. ‘Black and Blue’ is one of the best hummingbird magnets you can grow and countless tiny fliers will flock to the masses of blooms all summer long. Although Salvia ‘Black and Blue’ is considered an annual in our area, it will overwinter in protected areas. For optimum performance we recommend growing ‘Black and Blue’ in a sun to part sun location in well-drained soil. Salvia ‘Black and Blue’ will be available for purchase beginning in late April in our annuals department. Previous Proven Performers at Meadow View include Petunia ‘Blanket’, Celosia ‘New Look’, Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’ Begonia ‘Dragon Wing’, and Euphorbia ‘Hip Hop.’ Trees and Shrubs The Foundation of Your Landscape We’re excited to provide a great selection of locally grown nursery stock again this season. Our plant loving staff has chosen a diverse selection of trees and shrubs for your gardening pleasure. Trees and shrubs are the backbone of any landscape, providing year ’round benefits. These “anchor” plants not only provide shade, wind breaks and beauty, they also add value to any home, by improving curb appeal. In the winter, when your annuals are gone, and your perennials are dormant, you will still enjoy the shapes and structure of shrubs in your landscape. Trees and shrubs filter the air, providing clean oxygen for us to breathe, and their root systems filter pollutants from our ground water. And, unlike cars, computers, or couches, trees increase in value the minute they leave the nursery and continue to increase as they mature. We encourage you to stop in and check our fine selection. Visit with our knowledgeable staff, and let us help you choose that perfect plant. New Annuals Most annuals will be available starting in mid to late April.
