Unveiling the Mystique of
The Orient
Vivid colors, bold
landscapes, stunning
coastline, limestone
pinnacles rising from teal
waters, exquisite cuisine,
fascinating architecture,
colorful markets and a compelling history
render the Orient one of the most enriching
and exotic regions on Earth. Discover the
legacy of cultures from Vietnam, Laos,
Cambodia and China, as well as the
imprint of French, Japanese and American
influences—from the settling of the
Mekong Delta in the fourth century B.C.,
followed by the progressive effects of
the Cambodian Juman Empire and
the Kingdom of Champa, and until the
country was united in 1976. Watch early
risers performing ancient Tai Chi exercises
in modern city parks and farmers working
the seemingly impossible gradient of
terraced mountainsides. Experience the
social, intellectual and spiritual heartbeat
of these captivating cultures in the
palaces, pagodas, temples and tombs,
and in their stunning fusion of past
and present.

Singapore
Off the southern tip of the picturesque
Malay Peninsula, this tiny island city-state
is perhaps the world’s most perfect
fusion of East and West, with gleaming
skyscrapers towering above rickshaws
and colorful markets. Its many districts
reflect an amazingly cosmopolitan heritage
developed from its thriving international
financial center and busy shipping port.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) has remained
a vibrant convergence of French romance
and Vietnamese spice. Women walk by in
the traditional national costume of áo dài
dresses, a silk tunic worn over pantaloons,
while the streets are a sea of nón lá, conical
leaf hats. The city retains its rich history
as seen in the 19th-century, European-style
Central Post Office; Notre Dame Cathedral,
a distinct reminder that the French once
ruled this country; the Reunification Hall,
which once served as the South Vietnamese
Presidential Palace; and the War Remnants
Museum, which offers a unique perspective
on the Vietnam War through the eyes of
the Vietnamese. Still intact is the famous
Hotel Rex, where the American military
briefed the press corps. Also well preserved
are the Cu Chi Tunnels, an extraordinary
underground complex used by the Viet Cong.

Nha Trang
Bordered by mountains along the
South China Sea, Nha Trang’s beach is
one of the loveliest in Southeast Asia, with
turquoise waters luring marine scientists,
snorkelers and scuba divers. Chinese and
Vietnamese Buddhists make pilgrimages
here to pray at the Po Nagar Cham

the second century A.D. Marvelous masonry

Da Nang lies near China Beach, famous
as a retreat for American soldiers, and in the
shadow of the Marble Mountains, which
according to legend were formed from the
fragments of a dragon’s egg, from which
hatched a beautiful girl. Da Nang today
preserves many of the Cham Dynasty’s
sculptures in the impressive Cham museum.
Prior to the 14th century, ancient
Hôi An was the commercial capital of the
Cham Empire and a strategic port for the
very lucrative spice trade. Later, Chinese,
Japanese, Indian and Dutch merchants
settled Hôi An’s ancient town, today
a UNESCO World Heritage site and
a well-preserved example of a 15th- to
19th-century trading post with more than
800 period buildings still intact.
~ Son, a UNESCO World Heritage

Cham Empire, remains the most important
Cham site in Vietnam. The introduction
of Hindu architecture is seen in the temple
complexes constructed between the fourth
and the 14th century and used as a site of
religious ceremony for kings of the ruling
dynasties of Champa, as well as a burial
place for Cham royalty and national
heroes. At one time, the site encompassed
over 70 temples and is perhaps the longest
inhabited archaeological site in Indochina.

Vietnam, its Imperial Citadel, with massive
ramparts, moat and Imperial Closure, dates
from the 18th and 19th centuries and rivals
Beijing’s Forbidden City in sheer immensity.
Hué’s charming location on the banks of the
Perfume River makes it one of Vietnam’s
most intriguing and alluring destinations.
Ha Long Bay
The mist-shrouded “Bay of the
Descending Dragon” is one of Vietnam’s
most extraordinary natural features
and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Amid over 3,000 chalk and limestone
islands, wooden-hulled Vietnamese junks
with their characteristic orange sails glide
between caves and coves, grottoes and
stone towers, in a vision unchanged for
thousands of years.
✶
Haiphong (Hanoi )
From Haiphong, travel by way of scenic
roads through lush mountains and intricately
designed and manicured rice paddies to
Hanoi, the historic charm of which resides
in its shaded boulevards and bucolic public
parks, while the city center is a marvelous
time capsule of 1930s French-colonial
architecture. Along the shores of the peaceful
lake, residents can still be seen performing
traditional Tai Chi exercises. Nearby, the
Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 A.D.,
educated scholars in Confucianism for
more than 400 years. A testament to more
recent history, Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum
lies close to the infamous “Hanoi Hilton”
and the Army Museum. In the bustling
36 Streets District, 15th-century lanes
still carry the names of traditional
handcrafts practiced here, such as
“Silk Weaving Street.”
The Vietnamese’s love affair with the bicycle has
become an indelible part of their culture.
Hong Kong
This famous former crown colony,
returned to China in 1997, is now a
dazzling island of skyscrapers that
pulses with life and the fascinating
convergence of British and Chinese
cultures from Deepwater Bay to
Stanley Market. This spectacular modern
city appears to bloom from the shores of
its lively sampan-filled harbor.
Optional excursions during the cruise are
available at additional cost through Silversea.

send you an application upon receipt of your reservation.
