Happy Tails! - Diamonds in the Ruff Animal Rescue
ining! enterta y l t c e f r r u p It’s Volume 1, Issue 2 Happy Tails! August 2014 Inside this issue: A Diamonds in the Ruff Publication Update from the 2 Board Fosters Desperately Needed! DITR remembers sweet Timone, who sadly passed away before we could bring him home from a high-risk shelter. Timone was just a young puppy who needed a chance and DITR committed to rescuing Timone and many others thanks to the generosity of our fosters. Recently, DITR put out the call and our fosters rose to the challenge — DITR was able to rescue more than THIRTY animals and many more through partnerships with other local rescues! Here are just some of those rescues: Grace and her pups Blackie Caesar Otto Huck Elwood Sadie and her litter of 9 pups Maggie and her litter of 11 pups Joey Makayla Ranger Mason Beauty Madison Elsa Moose Hank Micah Athena Gizmo Delilah Kiki Tammy Ana Approximately 5 million to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. Please consider opening your hearts and homes to a rescue animal and become a foster today! DITR will provide the supplies and veterinary care necessary to keep the foster animal healthy and happy, so fostering is not a financial obligation. Plus, here are just five ways an animal may benefit from a foster home: 1. More socialization: A foster home allows for family time and attention, preparing the animal for a furever home. 2. More exercise: A dog with a backyard gets more activity than a shelter situation can typically provide. 3. Less stress: Some animals become very stressed in a shelter environment, making it harder to appeal to potential adopters. A relaxed space allows these animals to shine. 4. Time and space for recuperation: Dogs and cats that are recovering from illness or injury often do better in a quiet, comfortable environment. 5. Time for puppies and kittens to reach adoption age: Sometimes litters come into shelters and the animals aren’t old enough to be adopted. A foster situation allows these young animals the time and space to grow. Help us honor Timone’s memory and make sure another animal doesn’t have to die without the love of a family. Fill out a foster application on our website or send us an email with any questions at [email protected]. Our animals thank you! The hope remains that one day we will have adequate funding to allow us to both help the animals as well as have a physical rescue but at the moment, the stronger purpose is to save as many animals as we can. That means giving up some aspects of our financial commitments. That being said, in order to keep rescuing unwanted animals, we need volunteer help more than ever! Fosters are desperately needed to provide loving homes to our rescued animals while we search for their fur-ever homes. Also, we hope that all of our volunteers will continue to show us their love and support by assisting at community events. We are busier than ever during these summer months - concerts, pet stores, car shows, the Lockport Market. Many of you have expressed how much you miss the rescue facility since it was a great way to see other volunteers and the animals. Fosters – bring your animal to an event and show him/her off! Volunteers – sign up for a shift and get socializing! Volunteer Spotlight: Diane Porter! 1. Do you have any pets? I presently have a 7yr. old rescued rat terrier/ border collie mix named SallyMae...she's my best buddy. 2. How long have you been involved with DITR? I started with Diamonds in Feb. 2012. Previously I had volunteered with Maria Obes Sansone and Chris Niziol at NCSPCA. 3. What's your favorite DITR memory? Memories...so many...taking Nero to Mickey D's for yogurt and watching people do double takes at the big beautiful boy in the front seat of my car! Taking Iris Ann (my name for her) for walks down the trail near the shelter and having her drag me in the pond in Nov. because she saw some fish and couldn't wait to investigate...that water was cold! Playing with the hose with the army pits, Rocky and Titan, on warm days...so funny! Having a "pack" of cats/kittens come running when I opened the catroom door...felt the love. Watching these frightened animals come out of their shells and find loving forever homes. Each one has touched my heart as if they were my own. I have been BLESSED! 4.What's your favorite movie/TV show? Turner and Hooch! 5. Do you have any other hobbies? I love helping with the rescue and enjoy walking, kayaking, snowshoeing, with my SallyMae and then relaxing with a good book. 6. What’s a Fun Fact about you? A Fun fact...mmmm... had the awesome privilege of singing in the backup choir of a "Point of Grace" (a Christian group) concert a few yrs. ago...one of the highlights of my life! Page 2 Happy Tails! Featured Diamonds: Alia Breed: My papers say Pit bull mix, but I’ve always wanted to be a Bulldog! Age: Approximately 2 years old My Story: DITR pulled me from death row in a shelter after my owner decided they didn’t want me anymore. I’m a good dog, I promise - a real sweetheart! I get along with other dogs and everything! Favorite Activity: I have two foster siblings and we just love to play! And walks, a big fan of walks! Funny Fact: I know a lady should never speak of such things, but chicken upsets my delicate stomach. I’ve been known to cause quite the, errr, stir, if I eat chicken. My foster siblings try to blame me for other incidents too - don’t be fooled by them! Kona and Caturra Our Story: Sisters from different mamas! We are extremely bonded! Kona is a 10 year old rat terrier who loves to go for walks. She is a sweet girl who loves to sit behind you on the back of the sofa and watch whatever your doing. She also likes to burrow under the covers and sleep. Caturra is a 8 year old Mexican hairless terrier. She is laid back and loves attention. She likes to sit on the arm of the sofa and keep a eye on everything going on around her. If you fail to pet or pay attention to her when you walk past her on her perch she will let you know you forgot. Oh, and Kona tells us that when Caturra has enough of a walk, she will stop in her tracks and prefer to be carried or pushed in a stroller!!! Dobby Update: When we last left Dobby, he was explaining how he’s really a house dog, not a house elf! And he’s been working hard to prove it! Dobby has grown more secure during his stay at Grandpaw’s and loves his weekly visits with Maria, Tammy and Diane. Dobby recently completed his boot camp training at K9 Connection. We think it was a great success! Dobby aims to please and has gained a ton of confidence. He also liked the other dogs and enjoyed playing with them in the yard. Here he is pictured with his K9 Connections trainer. Look at that smile! Dobby will still be going to K9 Connections for follow up classes and so he can see his new friends there as well. Tune into our next issue for his next adventure on his quest for a furever family! Success Stories This time there are just so many to share but we want to bring special attention to everyone’s favorite rescue resident, King Nero! Nero went into a foster home earlier this year. Charlie fell in love with Nero and wants to keep him supplied in tennis balls furever!! We are so happy this handsome boy found the love that he deserves! Also happy tails to Bianca! Bianca recently underwent knee surgery and after a successful recuperation, was adopted by her foster family! And an added bonus - her other knee healed itself with after her surgery! Now she’s trotting around enjoying the good life! We have another foster failure story! Remember Roman? He came to DITR after sever neglect and cruelty. His wonderful foster has helped him grow into a bright, loving boy and decided she couldn't bear to be parted! Congrats, Roman! And more happy tails go out to: Adele, Allana, Ana, Athena, Baxter, Bella, Black Velvet, Blaze, Cricket, Delilah, Diesel, Evelyn, Gizmo, Jade, Madison, Mason, Maximillian, Micah, Moose, Nino, Odo, Olli, Ranger, Ruffles, Sprout, Sweet Pea, Tammy, Tomas, Tommy, and Zena.
