Join FMS in the battle to defeat
Bigotry and Bullying by supporting
our efforts in collecting can tabs.
Each tab represents a person who lost
their life. This is our school wide project recognizing the millions of people
who lost their lives due to the

Art
The art students in 5th grade have been working very hard on their "Music in Pictures" and "Peter and the Wolf" artworks. Next, we will be working on a variety of
projects for the "ArtsQuest" Festival in May (Mother's Day Weekend) at Watercolor,
near Seaside on 30A.

"Music in Pictures," sponsored by the Rosemary Beach Foundation is a year-long
educational art initiative open to all students in grades K-12 in the Walton County
school system–both public and private.
Goals of the program are to:
- provide an opportunity for listening to, discussing, and interpreting classical music.
- encourage appreciation of symphonic music by students
- to stimulate creativity
Over 2,000 students from 19 Walton County schools have listened to and visually
interpreted works by classical composers, our theme this year is "Out of the World."
ArtsQuest:
The ArtsQuest Fine Arts & Music Festival is produced by the Cultural Arts Alliance
of Walton County and presented by Visit South Walton. ArtsQuest is a juried fine
arts show that includes 130 artists in the categories of Ceramics, Fiber, Glass, Jewelry, Metal, Mixed Media, Oils & Acrylics, Original Digital Art, Photography, Sculpture, Wood and Works on Paper (Watercolor, Printmaking, Pastels, Pencils, Ink). In
addition to the fine arts show, ArtsQuest features the best in live musical entertainment, dance performances, artist demos, workshops and art projects and entertainment for kids.

will begin fundraising for
the “Change for Children” Campaign. The Campaign
runs February 3rd – 7th.

By donating your change during your school’s
Change for Children Campaign, you will help feed,
clothe, and care for the children living in our area.
The campaign kick-off will begin Monday, February
3rd during your child(ren)’s lunch period. We will
use last year’s fundraising theme of sending a staff
member’s pet to college.

Votes are earned by coins and one person may
vote as many times as he/she likes. Last year we
raised over $1,000 for this needy cause.
AVID school-wide and AVID elective application information
Here at FMS, AVID Strategies are implemented SCHOOL WIDE! Our teachers are integrating AVID
strategies into EVERY classroom!
Both AVID and the upcoming Common Core Standards address rigor in the classroom. The AVID
strategies and materials are meant to help students master one step in the educational process before
moving on to the next. Students in AVID Elective classes readily recognize rigorous assignments, and
through careful leadership and guidance provided by their teachers and tutors, AVID students prepare
themselves for the educational challenges they face as they proceed from one class to the next and
from one year to the next. The Common Core State Standards appear to reflect the path that AVID
students and educators have been following for more than three decades, a path that spirals upward,
establishing a solid foundation of literacy skills in one grade before ratcheting up the rigor in the next.
Please talk to your child about applying for the AVID elective. The AVID elective class will provide
your child with the additional support and WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and
Reading) strategies to assist them in their advanced classroom setting. The AVID elective is not a remedial class; all AVID elective students are registered in at least 1 advanced class. The AVID elective
is for students who want to Advance (A) Via (V) their Individual (I) Determination (D). Our AVID
elective students are required to go above and beyond!
Applications for current 5th and 6th grade students will be passed out during the month of February.
We currently have AVID elective classes in 7th and 8th grade and next year the AVID elective will be
offered in grades 6-8. The selection is based on your child's rubric score, which will be attached to
your child's application. Teacher recommendations, attendance, and positive behavior are all part of
the selection process. The AVID Site Team looks forward to reading your child's written responses
within the application. If you have any additional questions about the AVID program at FMS, please
contact Mrs. Appel (AVID Coordinator) at [email protected] or by phone (892-1221).
