Karen is an
award-winning
producer and
host of The
PlayList, Duluth’s
arts and culture
program, and
a producer on
several documentary projects with a
northern flair. She’s been with the Duluth
PBS station, WDSE, for 20 years. Through
her work on The PlayList, Great
Gardening, and Venture North, Karen
has developed a passion for the region
and a sincere curiosity about the people
who thrive in a northern climate.
Before coming to PBS, Karen worked
as a reporter for the ABC-TV affiliate
in Duluth. She graduated from the
University of Wisconsin-River Falls with
degrees in English and Journalism.
She has also produced documentaries
and specials during her time at the
WDSE PBS station. She has recently
wrapped production on a documentary
about the Lake Superior Steamer America.
One of her favorite recent projects was
recording a hot local band, Trampled
by Turtles, in concert at Bayfront Park.
In the past five years she’s earned two
Regional Emmys, several Regional Emmy
nominations and an honor award from
the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota.
Exploring backroads, hidden gems and
good restaurants is a favorite pastime.

Our journey to the Emerald Isle
begins with a pleasant overnight
flight to Dublin.
Day 2: discover Dublin
Our Irish Driver/Guide meets us upon
arrival. This beautiful modern city is
brimming with historic landmarks and
Georgian-style buildings. We’ll see its
highlights during a tour, then stop to visit
the venerable St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the
largest church in Ireland and, for many,
the country’s religious touchstone. We
end our first exciting day in Ireland at the
beautiful Dunboyne Castle Hotel & Spa. D
Day 3: C lonm acnoise
We travel west this morning to
Clonmacnoise. This beloved ancient
monastery site, with its remains of nine
churches kept tidy by preservationist,
was long a major center of religion and
education and drew scholars from all
over Europe. It’s truly a magical place
with a lovely setting on the River
Shannon. Later, experience true Irish
hospitality at Connolly’s Rathbaun
Farm. Here, sheep graze the fields
and the fragrance of home-baked
scones fills the air. We’ll visit with
our hosts Frances and Fintan in their
charming thatched cottage and sample
fresh pastry over a pot of Irish tea.
We stay tonight at the Radisson Blu
Hotel in Galway. B,D
Day 4: K y lemor e A bbey
We begin the day at the Connemara
Celtic Crystal Factory where Celtic
motifs are expertly cut into colored
crystal. Then, enjoy the opulent
canvas of Connemara, dense with
gleaming rivers and lakes, stunning
coastal views, and soaring mountains.
Later, stroll the vibrant gardens and
Neo-Gothic Church of Kylemore
Abbey, home to a Benedictine
Kilkenny
Blarney
www.holidayvacations.net
Begin today in Adare, often called
Ireland’s prettiest village with its
thatched cottages and beautiful stone
buildings. In Killarney, we board a
horse-drawn jaunting cart to see
the countryside in the most intimate
way. Tonight, our cultural experience
continues with traditional Irish folk
music and dancing at Kate Kearney’s
Cottage. We always receive a hearty
“failte!” or “welcome!” when we walk
through the welcoming doors
of this 150-year-old family-run
establishment. We spend the next
two nights at the splendid Killarney
Plaza Hotel & Spa. B,D

Back in Galway this evening, take
in some local culture by stepping into
the city’s lively entertainment scene. B
Day 5: m arvel at the
Cliffs of Moher
Our scenic morning drive takes us into
the otherworldly beauty of the Burren
in County Clare. Here, limestone has
eroded over the ages to form moonscape
patterns called karren. Next, we stop at
the Cliffs of Moher. This mighty coastal
wall, extending five miles along the
coast and plunging 700 feet to the sea,
once gave assurance to World War II
pilots that they had reached European
shores. 19th-century Irish life comes
alive as we witness the country’s heritage
at Bunratty Folk Park. Tonight we’ll
visit a 15th-century castle and enjoy
merry-making at a medieval banquet!
Our accommodations are in Limerick
at the elegant, boutique Savoy Hotel. B,D

Day 7: f ollow the
R ing of K er ry
We spend today savoring one of
Ireland’s or even the world’s, most
scenic drives, the Ring of Kerry.
Undulating hills, rugged mountains
draped with green forest, shimmering
lakes, emerald valleys, dramatic
seascapes, and quaint villages
all mark an unforgettable day. B
Day 8: kiss the
Blarney Stone
At Blarney Castle this morning, you can
kiss the fabled stone and be rewarded
with the “gift of gab.” If you still want
something to talk about, we make a
nearby stop to view some of Ireland’s
largest collections of Waterford Crystal
and Belleek China at Blarney Woollen
Mills. Then, at the stunning Rock of
Cashel, we learn about the rise of this
majestic castle, once an assembly place
for kings, and later, the church. We dine
and overnight tonight at the stunning
Lyrath Estate Hotel in Kilkenny. B,D
Day 9: tour kilkenny
We start the day at Kilkenny Castle.
This palace was originally built to
guard against crossings of the River
Nore in the 13th century. There’ll be
time to sample a local Kilkenny pub
for lunch, then explore the medieval
city’s narrow winding streets on your
own. Then we return to Dublin and
the Dunboyne Castle Hotel & Spa where
our Tour Director hosts our special
Holiday Vacations Farewell Dinner. B,D
