We live just a few houses from the club and have been members for close to thirty years. Our children all grew up at the club as well. The dictionary definition of a club is an assemblage of like-minded people meeting to pursue common interests. Our club has been meeting to pursue common interests for over 134 years. The last few years, as we all know, have been financially difficult for many of our members and for the club itself. Our membership is down about 130 members over the last three years but the decline seems to have tapered off in the last few months. Job One of your Board of Governors and the Flag Officers this year is to reverse the decline and rebuild the membership. About 75% of the decline has been in the Resident and Junior classifications with the balance in the Honorary and other Special categories. The good news is that we still have more than 1000 members and the economy is improving. Contact Information The participation at the club is at a high level Clubhouse (904) 387 - 1653 judging from the Dining activity, usage of the Fax (904) 389 - 9993 fitness facility, the tennis courts and the new Tennis Shop (904) 389 - 4281 docks. We have a lot to offer prospective Fleet & Fitness (904) 387 - 9683 members and we need to have all members help The Profit & Loss Statement and Member Directory us in the recruitment of new members. This means that our newest members are enjoying the club and want their friends to join. Not many of our oldest (by tenure) members have proposed a new member lately. In fact, less than 10% of our members have proposed a new member in the last two years. This year, the Management and the Board are going to work very hard to ensure that the member experiences at the club are of high quality and that the members are getting their money’s worth. If you are enjoying the club and having fun, please help us (and the club) by proposing your friends for membership. The process is very simple but does take about two months to complete. We have extended the discounted initiation fees so now is the time to discuss this with your friends, invite them to the club for dinner or tennis and get them excited about joining us. Our goal this year is to increase Resident membership by a net 50 members and to increase Junior membership by a net 10 new members. If we are successful, this will make a much more sound and robust club. I welcome all comments on how to improve our club. Feel free to either stop me at the Club or send me an email at [email protected]. See you at the Club. Mike Commodore Shad Getting involved in your Club is easy! Most of the hard work of the governance of the club is done in committees. Each committee is led by a member of the Board of Governors and the members of the committees are volunteers from the membership. The committees usually meet once a month for an hour or two. Their recommendations are then forwarded to the Board for approval, implementation and oversight. The best way for each of you to help improve our club is to volunteer to be on a committee or two. Our standing committees are as follows: · · · · · Membership Food and Beverage Finance Member Communications Building and Grounds F · · · · · House Pool and Fitness Tennis Fleet (both sail and power) Entertainment Please, if you have a particular expertise or interest in a specific area, please consider serving on one of the committees. Spouses are welcome to serve also. Please call Melissa at the club, put a note in my box in the office or email me at [email protected]. Cuisine scene Happy New Year!!! I would like to thank all of the members for their participation in our December events! What fun!! We also have a fun-filled year lined up for 2011. On the 2nd of January we have our Change of Command which celebrates our outgoing and incoming board members. Other fun club events include the Yachtsman of the Year, “Florida Yacht Club’s Got Talent” Kid’s Club Party, Sushi Night and our Famous Shrimp and Beer Fest. We had our first EVER Breakfast Dinner Buffet in November and it was a huge hit, so much so, that I have received many suggestions that we do this monthly! So for the last Tuesday of each Month we are going to feature our Breakfast Buffet and 2-for-1 Bloody Marys! cooking class January 20th, 6:30 pm A new year of cooking classes and I can’t wait to see all of your happy faces at our next one! I am really looking forward to this year and bringing some new recipes and ideas to the demonstration table. I was thinking of how popular our Shrimp and Grits have become at the club especially for our special events, so I am going to teach you my TOP SECRET recipe. I will also show you a few variations of the classic shrimp and grits recipe. It is very easy and tastes delicious! I look forward to seeing you on the 20th and Happy New Year. Enjoy The Holiday’s and see you at the Club! Chef Stephen Bechan Executive Chef SHRIMP & BEER FESTIVAL Friday, January 28th, 6:30 pm Pirate’s Den Buffet, No Reservations Even in the Winter, we still love our two favorite ingredients…Shrimp… and Beer! The Pirate’s Den will offer a delicious buffet with a large variety of Shrimp Specials to choose from such as: Shrimp Scampi, Stuffed Shrimp, Fried Shrimp and Shrimp Jambalaya. We’ll also provide a nice selection of beer to balance the different tastes and styles of the shrimp. Come out and enjoy! Adults $21.95, Children (10 & Under) $7.95 The Grapevine: Do You Really Need A Wine Cellar? For most people the answer is NO because they have no intention of holding on to their wine for an extended period of time (years not months) to let it age. Many wines (especially reds) improve greatly with age but most folks just don’t have the patience for aging. Even if you don’t plan to age your wines it is still useful to understand the characteristics of a wine cellar so you can ensure that your wines do not deteriorate while they are waiting to be served. A wine cellar protects wine from the natural enemies who seek to destroy it: heat, sunlight and vibration. So keep these basic principles in mind when you're thinking about where to store your wine. KEEP IT COOL: 55°F is the ideal temperature but more importantly, it should be a steady temperature. KEEP IT DARK: Protect against the ultraviolet rays of the sun. KEEP IT CALM: Avoid shaking, vibrating, or disturbing the bottles (e.g. don’t store wine next to stereo speakers) If you do decide to buy some wines to “put down” for aging, there are many appliances specifically designed for wine storage. These can be installed in any room of your home and they work almost as well as a traditional wine cellar. If you want to build a “wine cellar” (room), we’ve done it and would be happy to share information. The Wine Club meets for a tasting class the third Tuesday of each month. Make a reservation to try it out by calling the FYC office (904) 387-1653. If you have questions, send me an e-mail at [email protected]. Upcoming Wine Club Events: Please join us as we tour the world’s finest wine making regions this year and sample what they do best! January 18th February 15th March 15th April 19th May 17th June 21st Rhône Blind South Africa Bordeaux Celebrity Central Coast, CA Steve Shewbrooks Wine Club Chairman Fleetnews King’s Day Regatta Recap The 19th Annual King’s Day One Design Challenge attracted a star-studded field of international sailors to The Florida Yacht Club on the weekend of November 20th -21st . The International J-24 Class Association held its annual meeting at FYC on Friday with many of the delegates from around the world, who then competing on boats over the weekend. Sailors from Monaco, Japan and Great Britain combined with a strong contingent of US competitors to make this the most talented field to compete at FYC in recent memory. The conditions were very challenging with light winds on Saturday and Sunday. Skipper Dan Borrer of St. Augustine, FL with tactician and current J-24 World Champion Tim Healy of Newport, RI sailed an amazingly consistent series, never finishing worse than second to win the five race series. Second place went to the current J-24 National Champion, Will Welles of Mount Desert Island Community Sailing Center in Maine. The top local boat was Dr. Peter Bream on Team Tarheal finishing in fourth place out of the fleet of 21 boats. The top FYC boat went to Tim Monahan on USA 2504 finishing seventh in the highly competitive fleet. While I can’t thank all of the many volunteers that worked on this event by name, I’d like to single out a few that go above and beyond to work on regattas at FYC. Lynn Ellis provided his vessel Queen Anne as the signal boat and also served on the Race Committee. Our Non-Resident member Payne Fewell drove down from his home in Charlotte, North Carolina to run the Pin-Set boat for the weekend. Scott and Jill Herbst graciously provided their vessel Aquasition as the spectator boat. Without the hard work and dedication of these and other individuals, the great regattas at FYC would not be possible. Thank you all! It’s always fun for me to start a new year. It’s also time to reflect back on the previous year on which things went well and where we have room for improvement. Looking forward to 2011, the Tennis Staff members all re-established their goals and are very excited about growing FYC Tennis. I won’t go into the details in this article, but if anyone would like to know more I would be happy to share them with you! Thank you to all of you who came out to our Christmas Banquet to celebrate the 2010 FYC Tennis Season and to honor all of the players that made the year a success. Congratulations to all of our Club Champions and our Special Award Winners, all of which were very worthy and deserving recipients. If anyone has any ideas on how to improve upon our Tennis program, I would love to hear them! We are going to start the year off with a small (but in my opinion the most important program that we offer) Free Adult Beginner’s Class. Formerly known as “Play Tennis FYC” we are now calling it “Quick Start Tennis.” This is modeled after the USTA Quick Start Program, that utilizes the slower balls in order to make learning the game of tennis much easier. As many of you know the beginner class is a breeding ground to our Adult Team Tennis. If anyone knows a member that may be interested in learning our wonderful game, please me know so that I can tell them about our great program. Last but not least, our USTA Team Tennis sign-ups have begun. The USTA season runs March thru June, matches are played Saturdays for men and Sundays for ladies. The league includes doubles and singles. Please call the pro shop at (904) 389-4281 for more information. See you on the courts! These telephone numbers were listed in meeting minutes I ran across from 1938. Many of us are too young to remember using phone numbers like this. Heck, my kids have never even been in a phone booth! Times change but our club has been a place where relationships are born and friendships strengthened since 1876. The FYC is more than a just a club for many of us. It is interwoven into the fabric of our lives. For many of us, it is where we learned to swim, sail or play tennis. We saw fireworks for the first time on the docks. We had our first “real” date there. Some of us debuted, met our spouses, were married, or had anniversary celebrations on the club grounds. What joyful memory comes to mind when you think of the club? At our Annual Membership Meeting, more than fifty people raised their hands to express their intent to sponsor a new member this year. I am excited to once again assist in the effort to bring more great membership candidates into our great Club. We created a new FYC facts brochure that you can pick up and take with you when meeting with your prospective member. This tri-fold brochure is small enough to fit into a purse or jacket pocket, and is filled with specific information about the amenities of the Club that prospective members need to know. Your board met 100% of the candidates for membership last year and we remain committed to continuing this pledge. Board Members Kevin Green, Brooks Busey and myself are at your service to help you with a perspective member. Additionally, Melissa Schlesinger has done a fantastic job as our Membership Director and can assist you with the process. New Year is the ideal time to set new goals. Now is the time to sponsor a new member. The process is easy and the rewards are huge! Thomas A.
