How to Watch a Good Program Die
Nothing kills a recreation program faster than residents
who wait until the last minute to register. There is a point
when a program must be cancelled or modified if there is
insufficient registration. All programs require a high level
of coordination often including facility scheduling, staffing,
volunteer recruitment and purchasing of supplies.
Photo Policy
Participants permit the taking of
photos and videos of themselves and
their children during Parks, Recreation
and Community Services Department
activities, programs, and special
events for publication and use as the
department deems necessary.
Volunteers
Many of our programs depend on volunteer help. If you
wish to put your expertise to use in a program or would
like to find out what volunteer opportunities are available,
please call us at 891-5015.
Sponsorship
The Parks, Recreation and Community Services
Department has many opportunities for sponsorships. We
offer only first-class, quality programs and special events. If
you are interested in how we can help you reach your
customers and promote your business, contact Connie
Peterson at 891-5015.

Rio Rancho Parks & Recreation
Message from the Director:
Welcome to the Rio Rancho Parks Recreation and
Community Services Department Fall brochure.
My name is Jay Hart and I am the Director for
the Department.
Our job is to provide recreational
opportunities for the community by offering
enrichment classes, youth sports, fitness
programs, aquatics, special events, green parks,
and a lot of open space. We have partnerships
with youth sports organizations, the Rio Rancho
School District, Silver Sneakers program, the Rio
Rancho Library, various charitable organizations,
and local Rio Rancho businesses to increase our
reach in the community.
If you are interested in volunteer opportunities
please contact our Department at 505-891-5015,
or email us at [email protected].
We offer recreation opportunities for all age
groups from pre-school to older adults. Please
take advantage of the programs we offer, the
events we host, and the parks and the open space.
Thanks for browsing our brochure and I look
forward to seeing you in the community!

Aqua Zumba: Known as the Zumba®
“pool party,” the Aqua Zumba program
gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Splashing, stretching,
twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting,
and hollering are often heard during an
Aqua Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba
formula and philosophy with traditional
aqua fitness disciplines, the Aqua Zumba
class blends it all together into a safe, challenging, and water-based workout that’s
cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and
most of all, exhilarating beyond belief.
Aqua Circuit: Tone and sculpt your body
with no impact to your joints. This water
aerobics workout is a blend of cardio and
resistance training, and may incorporate
resistance tools such as buoyant water
weights, resistance bands, and noodles.

Beginning Gymnastics
Rio Rancho Youth Basketball Recreational/Competitive League
Participants will be introduced to basic skills in gymnastics, will increase their
flexibility, and build self-confidence.
This league is designed to allow boys and girls in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades the opportunity to compete against teams from other Rio Rancho schools in the same grade
level. Starting in November, each Rio Rancho elementary school will have one or more
co-ed teams, each consisting of 3rd and 4th graders. Rio Rancho middle schools will
suit up two or more teams of 6th graders. There will be a boys team and a girls team.
Students attending private school, home school, or those that live outside the Rio
Rancho Public School District will be placed on the team at the school they would be
attending. All players will be accepted through the registration deadline. No need to
stand in a registration line for hours in advance! The method of placing players on a
team will be random but with consideration on a case-by-case basis if there is a special
circumstance. While we want your kids to have fun and play alongside their friends,
allowing parents or coaches to pick teams poses challenges. The City needs to do its
best to avoid the appearance of “team stacking”.

T’ai Chi Chih
T’ai Chi Chih – serenity in the midst of activity – is a series of 19 movements and one pose
which were originated by Justin Stone. Mr. Stone taught T’ai Chi Ch’uan for many years
before developing a new technique which he called T’ai Chi Chih. T’ai Chi Chih is simple
and easy to learn with benefits usually beginning from the first class. The gentle movements emphasize a flowing continuity and strongly stimulate the flow and balance of Chi
or the “vital force” in the body.
Benefits of regular T’ai Chi Chih practice can include stress reduction, weight and blood
pressure control, increased energy, and a greater enthusiasm for life. As the practitioner
becomes relaxed a new understanding and perspective is formed, creative energy flows more
freely and greater joy in everyday life becomes apparent.

Senior Services
Emotional health and physical well-being
are intrinsically linked. At any given time,
individuals face a variety of challenges.
Support groups can relieve the stress and
pain and offer coping mechanisms. Groups
are free of charge and are led by trained
professionals.
Grief and Loss Support
Loss comes in many forms: the demise of
dreams or hopes, the passing of friends or
family through divorce or death, loss of a
beloved animal, or dealing with other challenges — all of which can stimulate grief.
This group provides a supportive environment in which to discuss and learn to cope
with sad times.
Alzheimer’s Support Group
Join the New Mexico Chapter of the
Alzheimer’s Association Support Group at
MSC. This is for caregivers of loved ones
with any form of dementia. The group is facilitated by a trained Alzheimer Association
member, a primary caregiver herself, for
over 6 years. The group meets regularly on
the 1st Monday of each month at 10:30 am.
Diabetes Support
Led by a health educator, the Diabetes
Support Group provides practical information for living with Diabetes.
Employment Assistance for Seniors
The New Mexico Aging and Long Term
Services Department offers free one-on-one
assistance to help you write a resume, cover
letter, use the computer to design business
cards, and more. This opportunity is provided through the 50+Employment Connection
at MSC.
Silver Alert
Silver Alert is a notification system sent out
statewide when a person 50 years or older
with dementia goes missing. The individual’s basic information and photograph
are downloaded to a flash drive and given to
their caregiver for safekeeping. In the event
the person goes missing, the flash drive is
given to the Rio Rancho Police Department
and a Silver Alert is issued. The program
is sponsored by the Rio Rancho Police
Department, the Sandoval County Sheriff’s
Office, and the Meadowlark Senior Center.
Contact the Front Desk at 891-5018 for an
appointment. No Fee.
The following are some of the ongoing activities at MSC that do not require registration – just
show up to attend these activities. For a complete listing of all classes, activities and trips, see the

Art for the Ages
Explore and nurture the inner you. Now is
the time to experiment and experience new
things. Many of us have never exercised our
creative potential. Why not now? Whether
you have been an artist for years or are just
interested in exploring the possibilities, we
have a variety of art and craft classes that
will appeal to you. Here are some of the
many offerings available to MSC members:
Beginning and Intermediate Drawing
Students learn the basics of shapes, shading,
perspective, composition, proportions,
balance, and contour drawing then progress
to trying some new ideas and techniques.
The beginning class is the foundation for
other art courses.
Beginning and Intermediate
Watercolor
Learn about watercolors, brushes, brush
strokes, color mixing, value scales, lift off
techniques, and much more. The
intermediate class is for those who want to
be adventurous with experimental projects,
still life, and other “how-to” projects.
Registration Information
Registration is required for MSC programs that have a fee and/or limited space.
Registration is on the first Thursday of each
month in the Meadowlark Senior Center

important art form. In fact, wood carving was a favorite means of expression in
ancient Egypt and China. Today, wood
carving is being nurtured at MSC by a
dedicated group of men and women who
form the woodcarvers group. If you have
wanted to carve, but weren’t sure you could
do it, now is the time to find out. Join the

realize your dream. The woodcarvers group
meets every Friday from 9:00 to 11:00 am.

Fair for the beautiful and creative baskets
they have produced. You, too, can learn the
art of basket making. Start with a basket kit
available from the leader and try your hand.

a basket that expresses your sense of style.
All skill levels are welcome. This ongoing
