CCSD in 2008-2009
Highlights: Our World-Class Schools and People
Message from the Superintendent
Lucy Beckham, Wando High School: National High School Principal of
the Year (MetLife/National Association of Secondary School Principals)
In year two of the “Charleston Achieving Excellence” plan, I am proud
of the progress being made by our world-class students. Nearly half
of our students now attend “Excellent” rated schools—twice the
state average. We have greatly expanded the menu of choices for
parents with neighborhood, magnet, charter, Montessori, and singlegender schools and programs. Our partnerships with community,
business, and faith-based organizations are stronger than ever. It
is clear that when we believe in every child and invest in public
education, we build a brighter future for Charleston County.
Maisha Rounds, Sanders-Clyde Elementary/Middle School:
CCSD Teacher of the Year
Katherine Henderson, West Ashley High School:
Milken Award-Winning Teacher
Mary Beth Meggett, Stiles Point Elementary: Presidential Award for
Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
Academic Magnet High School: Best Magnet High School in the
Nation, U.S. News and World Report
Garrett Academy of Technology & Charleston County School of the Arts:
Named among the nation’s best schools by U.S. News & World Report
-Superintendent Dr. Nancy J. McGinley
The Future & CCSD’s Strategic Priorities
We are focusing like a laser on our areas in need of improvement, including high school performance, literacy, and the achievement gap. Our strategic priorities—
teacher quality, literacy improvement, world-class learning facilities, and strategic partnerships—form our road map for continued improvement and success.
