2007-08 WINGATE BASKETBALL
2007-08 Wingate Women’s Basketball Outlook
Fans of the Wingate University women’s basketball team will see a new face on the sidelines in 200708. Head coach Barbara Nelson takes the reins as head coach, replacing Johnny Jacumin. During his
27-year Bulldog tenure, Jacumin compiled an overall record of 591-218.
Nelson is no stranger to hard work and success. She served as the head varsity girls’ basketball coach
at Providence Day School in Charlotte for 21 seasons. She compiled a 437-176 record with seven
NCISAA state championships during her tenure with the Chargers.
“The hallmarks for our team will be hard work and unselfishness,” Nelson said. We will care about each
other and strive to win every time we hit the floor. I would like to think that people thought we were
dedicated and committed to everything we’re doing.”
Bulldog fans will see new faces on the court as well, as Wingate (23-7 last season) graduated four
starters from an NCAA tournament squad. Leading the way for the veterans is junior point guard Anna
Atkinson. An ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America®
candidate, Atkinson is a two-time All-SAC performer.
Last year, Atkinson averaged 7.3 points per game and 4.9 assists
per game. She led the South Atlantic Conference in steals and
assist-to-turnover ratio. “My style of play is very up-tempo,”
Nelson said. “Anna wants to play the style we want to play and
she’s excited about it.”
Nelson believes the Bulldogs will employ several different styles
this year. “I think our fans will see a team that transitions about
one-third of the time,” she noted. “I think they will see a team that
runs many continuity offenses at least a third of the time. Also, I
think they will see us utilize set plays (a third of the time).”
Bulldog senior shooting guard Kate Edwards gives Wingate one
of the best outside threats in the SAC. Edwards led the team with
48 three-point field goals last season. “Every one of our
opponents is going to come out of the zone when she is in the
game,” Nelson said.
Anna Atkinson
“Kate has worked very hard on putting the ball on the floor…to
establish her mid-range jumper,” Nelson said. “I am very pleased with her progress. She has led us in
every capacity (during the pre-season). She has taken very seriously the charge I gave her. Kate wants
to finish her career on a great note.”

2007-08 WINGATE BASKETBALL
Wingate senior guard Kasey Gillis “is probably one of the purest athletes on our team,” Nelson noted. “I
think she will benefit most from the change in our style of play. I think an up-and-down game and an
athletic game will play into Kasey’s abilities tremendously.”
“Kasey has been working very hard in our individual work-outs,” Nelson added. In 2006-07, Gillis played
in 30 games (three starts), averaging 3.3 points per game. She is a local product from Piedmont High
School. “She’s going to do real well with the pace we’re going to try
and play,” Nelson noted.
All total, eight letter winners return from last year’s NCAA play-off
squad. In the front court, junior Leslie Tucker and sophomore
Stacie Rhodes will make a big contribution this season. “Leslie is
our enforcer,” Nelson said. “She’s got such a pleasant attitude. She
brings so much positive energy to our team.”
Rhodes spent the summer at “basketball boot camp,” Nelson noted.
“She has worked so hard on every aspect of her game. Stacie will
be hard (for our opponents) to contain.”
In the backcourt, junior guard Brittany West “is one of the hardest
workers on our team,” Nelson said. Junior Paige Mincey and
sophomore Sarah Rosser will give the Bulldogs a boost with their
outside shooting prowess.
Six newcomers will battle for playing time. Freshman forward
Stefani Shuey “gives 110 percent effort every play,” Nelson noted.
Freshman forward/guard Jessy Keitt played for Coach Nelson at
Providence Day. “Jessy plays tenacious defense,” Nelson said.
“She will help us defensively in playing the style we want to play.”
Kate Edwards
Sophomore transfer Erica Crumlin (East Carolina) will give the Bulldogs a presence in the post. Nelson
believes freshman guard/forward CC Brooks has the potential to earn All-SAC honors before her
Bulldog career ends. Freshman point guard Emily Parrish joins Wingate squad as a recruited walk-on.
“Emily is probably the biggest surprise in preseason (for us),” Nelson asserted. Freshman guard Lauren
Beeson will make a contribution at the point guard and the off-guard position.
The Bulldogs will play one of the toughest schedules in the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region.
Wingate plays CIAA power Johnson C. Smith University twice and Peach Belt Conference contender
Lander University home and away. The Bulldogs will face Lynn (Fla.) University and Georgia College &
State University in a Florida swing at Thanksgiving.
GC&SU eliminated Wingate from the 2007 NCAA Division II play-offs. The Bulldogs will also venture to
Shaw in December to play the always-tough Bears.
Wingate will play 18 South Atlantic Conference games in December, January, February and March. The
2008 Food Lion SAC tournament will be held March 5 (sites of higher seeds) and March 8-9 (Hickory).

HEAD COACH BARBARA NELSON
Barbara Nelson has served as the head varsity girls’ basketball coach at Providence Day
School in Charlotte for 21 seasons. She has compiled a 437-176 record with seven NCISAA
state championships during her tenure with the Chargers. PDS was named the Charlotte
Observer Sweet 16 champions five times. In addition, Providence Day won the CISAA
basketball conference crown nine times under Nelson’s watch.
In 2006-07, Nelson led the Chargers to a 30-4 overall record, a state title and a conference
championship. The Charlotte Observer named Nelson its girls’ basketball Coach of the Year
for her efforts this season, the fourth time she has received this prestigious honor. Nelson
has compiled a winning record in 19 of her 21 seasons with the Chargers. The 30 wins this
year were a career-best for Nelson.
Nelson has ties to the South Atlantic Conference. She is a graduate of Presbyterian College
with a B.S. degree in Psychology. A four-year letter winner in basketball for the Blue Hose,
Nelson served two years on the Scotsman Club board for her alma mater. She coached three players who signed SAC scholarships, including current Carson-Newman College rising senior forward Tashea Ledbetter.
The accolades her Providence Day players have received could fill several scrapbooks. Konecka Drakeford was a two-time
Parade All-American (1991 and 1993). Drakeford was the NCAA Division II Player of the Year her senior season at Johnson C.
Smith University.
Both Drakeford and Natasha Brackett were named the Gatorade N.C. Player of the Year and N.C. Miss Basketball in 1993 and
2001, respectively. Brackett (Auburn) is one of four former Chargers to sign NCAA Division I scholarships. Drakeford (Israel
and Turkey) and Brackett (Israel) have played professionally as well.
Nelson’s involvement in the game of basketball extends beyond the Providence Day campus. A 12-year participant in the
Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), Nelson was a high school All-American selection committee member in
2006-07. She has been a Nike Basketball Camp Director from 1999 to the present.
She has coached AAU basketball (boys and girls) since 1986. Nelson was an assistant coach for an AAU 18 and under state
and national championship team in 1986. She has coached the Charlotte Royals (boys), Charlotte Monarchs, Carolina Comets
and N.C. Flight. Nelson spent two years as a floor coach for the WNBA Charlotte Sting during open and free-agent tryouts.
A much-in-demand clinician, speaker and student of the game, Nelson has worked and attended camps and clinics at
Charlotte, N.C. State, Wake Forest, Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, Lipscomb, Gardner-Webb and Wingate. Nelson and her husband
Vernon have two children: Quinn (18) and Haley (15).
“Barbara Nelson has an intensity and passion for the game of basketball,” Steve Poston said. “Since our first interview, Coach
Nelson has approached this opportunity with enthusiasm and excitement.”
“She understands the balance an NCAA Division II student-athlete must achieve,” Poston noted. “We want to offer each of our
student-athletes a well-balanced experience athletically, academically, socially and spiritually. Barbara Nelson understands this
concept very well.”“Her track record is proven; Barbara Nelson knows how to win,” Poston added. “It is very important for us
not to lose a step."

HELPING HANDS
The Bulldog Helping Hands program allows friends, family members and businesses to provide financial support for their
student-athletes who attend Wingate University. Funds from the Bulldog Helping Hands program are used to directly benefit the team of the donor’s choice. Each team identifies a service project during the year as a part of the school’s strong
emphasis on community service. The Bulldog Helping Hands program assists Wingate student-athletes while they are
making a difference on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

2007-08 WINGATE BASKETBALL
2007-08 Wingate University Men’s Basketball Outlook
The Wingate University men’s basketball team made the best run in South Atlantic Conference men’s
basketball history in 2006-07. Wingate (25-9 overall, 11-5 SAC) in 2006-07) won the Food Lion SAC
Tournament for the second consecutive season in 2007. The Bulldogs took the 2007 South Atlantic
Regional title on their way to becoming the first SAC men’s basketball team to participate in an NCAA
Division II Elite Eight event.
The past two seasons, the Bulldogs have caught fire at the right time. In 2006, the Bulldogs won seven
straight games before falling to Virginia Union University in the first round of the South Atlantic Regional
Tournament. In 2007, the Bulldogs won eight straight games on the way to the Elite Eight, including a
73-56 rematch win over Virginia Union in the South Atlantic Regional championship game. The Bulldogs
trailed VUU by 10 at the break and outscored the Panthers 48-21 in the second stanza.
The Bulldogs return two of the top players in the NCAA Division II
South Atlantic Region. Wingate senior guard/forward Sean
Barnette was a Daktronics third team All-American selection last
year. Barnette averaged a league-leading 21.6 points per game
last season. With 333 additional points, Barnette could become
the first player in SAC history to score more than 2,000 points in a
career.
Redshirt senior forward/center Bryan Grier had another impressive season for the Bulldogs in 2006-07, averaging 11.6 points per
game and 7.9 rebounds per game. He led the SAC in rebounds,
blocked shots (119) and field goal percentage (67.4). Grier earned
second team All-SAC laurels for the second consecutive season.
Sean Barnette
The 2005-06 NCAA Division II leading shot blocker, Grier may
have made the biggest block of his career in the first round of the
2007 South Atlantic Regional Tournament. The Vance High School
graduate blocked the potential game-tying shot attempt by
Armstrong Atlantic State University in the waning moments of the
first round match-up to give the Bulldogs a two-point victory.
Both Barnette and Grier played in the Charlotte Pro-Am League during the summer of 2007. “They had
a great experience (this summer),” Wingate head coach Parker Laketa said. “They got to play against
players that they normally wouldn’t face…so it was a good experience for them. They are getting
themselves ready for what I hope is a big senior season.”
Wingate lost three starting guards in Justin Baker, Shaun Kirkland and Bill Smith. Together, they
averaged almost 36 points per game last year. Laketa is eager for the challenge ahead. “I’m looking
forward to getting to know this team and their personality,” Laketa said. “I know they want to win. My job
is to teach them how to do it and to focus those efforts in the right direction.”

2007-08 WINGATE BASKETBALL
By no means are the Bulldogs a two-man show. Junior forward Kenny Villines started 16 games last
season, averaging 4.6 points per game and 5.1 rebounds per game. Senior shooting guard Sam
Holmes averaged 4.6 points per game last year. In his first campaign in the blue-and-gold, Holmes hit
32 three-point field goals last season.
Both junior forward Tommy Coles and sophomore guard Larry Staley saw significant time during
Wingate’s stretch run. Laketa looks for them to play enhanced roles this season. Staley had 12 points in
a wild 122-116 February victory at Carson-Newman.
Laketa will have three-point weapons inside and outside with senior forward Ryan Thys and senior
guard Ernest Mangum. At 6-8, Thys will help open the floor for
Bulldog guards. Mangum did not play in 2006-07; his return will be
a big key to Wingate’s outside game.
Guards Rosco Turner and David Johnson will have opportunities
to make a difference. Laketa will look to each player for increased
production this season. Walk-on Phillip Jacobson has a year
under his belt; he will give the Bulldogs much depth at the guard
position. Laketa believes redshirt freshman swingman Ben Davis
will make an impact as a scorer and a defender.
Two newcomers join the Bulldogs this season. Junior guard
DeMario Mattox is a combo guard who can play any of the three
back-court positions. Laketa believes Mattox’s speed and agility will
be a big bonus in the Wingate backcourt. Mattox is a transfer from
Hampton University.
Sophomore guard Brandon Plummer “can stretch a defense with
his three-point shooting,” Laketa noted. The Norfolk State University
transfer will be asked to make key decisions for the Bulldogs.
Laketa believes Plummer will make significant contributions on both
offense and defense.
Bryan Grier
“The challenge (for us) will be to develop a more consistent bench,” Laketa said. “I think on paper…we
are deeper for 2007-08. We have more people who can make a contribution. I am very excited (about
the upcoming season).”
Wingate will play a challenging schedule. In addition to the SAC slate, the Bulldogs play defending
NCAA Division II national champion Barton College twice (Nov. 26 and Dec. 8). The Bulldogs start the
season with the 42nd Pickle Classic at Mount Olive Nov. 16-17. King (Tenn.) and West Virginia State will
connect with the Bulldogs and the Trojans in this year’s Pickle Classic.
In Wingate’s OrthoCarolina Classic (Nov. 30 and Dec. 1), three of the four teams played in the 2007
NCAA Division II tournament: St. Edward’s (Texas) University and Caldwell (N.J.) College joined the
Bulldogs in the 2007 big dance. CIAA power Fayetteville State University will venture to the
OrthoCarolina Classic as well.

HEAD COACH PARKER LAKETA
Wingate University men’s basketball coach Parker Laketa begins his eighth season at
the Bulldog helm this winter. In seven seasons, Coach Laketa has compiled a 129-84
overall record. He has led Wingate to four NCAA Division II play-offs appearances
during his tenure.
For the second year in a row, Coach Laketa and his Bulldogs were able to get hot when
it counted. The 2006-07 Bulldogs won eight consecutive games in February and March
to find themselves as the first SAC school in the conference’s history to be competing in
the men’s basketball Elite Eight.
Wingate won four games by a total of 34 points en route to its second straight Food
Lion SAC Tournament victory and an automatic bid into the Regional Tournament. The
Bulldogs then won the first two games of the South Atlantic Regional Tournament by a
total of four points to make its way to the school’s first men’s basketball Sweet Sixteen.
Wingate defeated Virginia Union University 73-56 after trailing by 10 at the half to take
home the 2007 South Atlantic Regional championship.
Forward/guard Sean Barnette earned 2007 Daktronics All-American third team honors.
The 2007 SAC Male Athlete of the Year, Barnette was the Food Lion SAC tourney MVP
for the second consecutive season.
In 2005-06, forward Bryan Grier was the nation’s leading shot blocker. At 4.9 blocked shots per game, he was almost 1.5 blocks per
contest better than anyone else in the NCAA Division II.
In his first season (2000-01), Laketa guided the Bulldogs to a 25-5 overall record and earned a share of the SAC regular season crown.
The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional semifinals during Laketa’s first year, winning the first-ever NCAA
postseason game in school history.
In the 2001-02 campaign, Laketa and the Bulldogs compiled a 26-7 ledger. The Bulldogs completed the 2002 SAC regular season in
second place; in addition, Wingate was the runner-up at the Food Lion SAC tournament. Wingate qualified for the NCAA play-offs. The
2002-03 team posted an 18-11 overall record (10-4 in the SAC). Wingate University shared the SAC regular season championship.
Laketa knows the high expectations associated with Bulldog basketball. Wingate has qualified for the NCAA Division II play-offs four of
his seven seasons. A key ingredient on Laketa’s first two teams was point guard Lorinza Harrington, who has spent time in the NBA with
the Denver Nuggets, New Orleans Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies.
Laketa has several years of experience as an assistant coach and player on the NCAA Division I level. Laketa was the assistant basketball coach at the University of Notre Dame for seven seasons.
While at Notre Dame, Laketa was responsible for recruiting the Orlando Magic’s Pat Garrity (1997 Big
East Player of the Year) and Troy Murphy (1999 Big East Rookie of the Year), among others. At Notre
Dame, Laketa coached four current NBA players in Garrity, Murphy, Monty Williams and Matt Carroll.
The Fighting Irish reached the NIT quarterfinals in 1997.
Prior to his experiences at Notre Dame, Coach Laketa spent three years as an assistant coach at
Western Michigan University. WMU participated in the NIT in 1992, giving Western Michigan its first
postseason appearance in 17 seasons. While at WMU, he recruited Ben Handlogten, the school’s alltime leading rebounder. He has played in the NBA with Utah and New Jersey.
Laketa also spent three seasons at Illinois State University as an assistant basketball coach. ISU
made the NIT in both 1987 and 1988.
Laketa played college basketball for legendary coach Jack Hartman at Kansas State University. He
earned a starting position in 1983. Kansas State made the NCAA tournament in 1982, advancing to
the Sweet Sixteen.
Coach Laketa earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from Illinois State University. Also, he has
a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Sciences and Education from Kansas State University. He
and his wife Brigitte have four sons, Parker (11), Preston (9), Rhett (5) and Luc (5).
