fall 2012
Sister to Sister Patch Program
Girl Scouts turned 100 in 2012!
We want to share the great opportunities that we have to offer
with as many people as possible.
We are asking all girls and adults
to share the story and benefits of
Girl Scouting and invite a friend
to become a member of Girl Scouts this year. To
thank you for your help in building our membership,
we will continue to offer our Sister to Sister patch
program.
All current members—girl and adult—are eligible to
participate. If you recruit a new member into Girl
Scouting, you will receive a patch to build a “Circle
of Friends.” Your first patch is the center patch
(circle-shaped); colorful girl patches can be earned
for each addtional member that you recruit. Contact your troop leader to get a copy of the Sister to
Sister form. Fill out and attach the form to the newly
registered member’s registration form; you both
will receive a patch.
Congratulations to Hannah Bakker from
Girl Scout Cadette Troop 10770 for being accepted
to participate in the Wyoming’s Wildlife Wonders
National Destination this summer! Hannah, along
with other Girl Scouts from across the country,
worked with and learned from field instructors at
the Teton Science Schools and women leaders
from the Rocky Mountains. Together, on foot and by
canoe, they explored Grand Teton and Yellowstone
National Parks. Hannah says, “I chose this destination because it excited me. I am amazed by how
ecosystems can work together perfectly, just like
the one at Yellowstone.” Hannah, who has been a
Girl Scout since Daisies, earned her Silver Award in
2011. Interested in following Hannah’s lead? Check
out page 8 for information about the amazing travel
opportunities you’ll have when you’re a GS Cadette!

Magic of Chemistry: Fun with Polymers
In Fun with Polymers, one of three Magic of Chemistry
workshops, Girl Scouts become product consultants
for an imaginary company, Polymer Fun, Inc. The participants
visit with ‘research scientists’ to make and evaluate new polymer
products. Girls will make and test ‘slime’ as well as completing
other experiments such as ‘incredible incrediblobs,’ ‘moo glue,’
and ‘supersoakers.’ They then get to take their new products
home with them!

This program is funded by grants and the support of sponsors and collaborators at a cost of more than $20 per person.
Because of their generosity, the fee for girls and adults is only $10.
This cost includes lunch, a t-shirt, and patch. A 1:4 ratio of adults
to girls is necessary; therefore, registered adults will be evenly
distributed among all girls in attendance. Adults will assist girls
with experiments and help the Program Host manage her group

Many Girl Scout troops register to attend programs as a
group, but girls may attend any program for their age level
as an individual (adult chaperone required). We encourage
you to look through these listings with your daughter and
talk to her about the programs she’d like to attend. There
is a program registration form on pages 13-14 and online
at www.girlscoutsmoheartland.org. If you have questions
about any of the program listings, please email programs@

Summer Camp
Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland celebrated 100 Trailblazing Years with 6 weeks of resident
camp offered at 4 different program centers. Girls had a wide variety of sessions from which to
choose, including sessions that emphasized swimming, horseback riding, robotics, challenge
courses and good old outdoor fun!
Camp provides a unique opportunity for girls to learn traditions of Girl Scouts while also providing
a safe, relaxed environment where girls feel free to try new things. Days begin and end with a flag
ceremony, meals start only after grace, and everyone has Kapers they must complete. In between
the swimming, horseback riding, archery, hiking, game playing, song-singing and craft-making, girls
find time to relax with a good book, write a letter home to their family or take a short siesta in the
shade.
Every day at camp provides girls with an opportunity to make new friends, challenge themselves by
trying something new and most of all to make memories that will last a lifetime.

about recognition items...
To celebrate your achievement, you earn recognition items in this program. Items are earned based on
different sales goals, both QSP (magazine/book/music) items and nut and candy items. Recognitions are
cumulative—so whatever goal level you meet, you’ll receive the items at that level AND all the levels below it!
For example—if you sell 6 QSP items, you’ll earn: the plush flamingo (or pink camo zipper case—your choice)
AND the hair tie lollipop (or heart chalkboard set—your choice) and the “What Can a Girl Do?” patch.
