The Chair should have good knowledge of the Rules and should be able to give clear and direct rulings and guidance, when necessary. Meeting Time - Standing Orders set out the Schedule to be agreed. 1. All Meetings should start on time 2. Members must be informed of starting time and would be expected to be on time 3. Agreement on completion is essential 4. Agenda as per custom and practise Minutes of previous meeting read by the Secretary Matters arising from the Minutes Correspondence, if any Discussion re correspondence Other matters relating to the Club/Breed AOB Secretary’s Role - As a committee member the Secretary will record the minutes of the meeting and is entitled to participate fully in discussions on the business of the Club. The Chair will remain neutral throughout but will control the meeting at all times by way of keeping order and maintaining the agenda at all times. This means giving direction and guidance during the meeting with a view to keeping control of the meeting and ruling our issues not particular to the agenda. It is also the responsibility of the Chair to stop the meeting where major disagreement occurs and to guide the meeting back on track if possible while trying to find a solution to the problem. If it is not possible to solve the problem as per finishing time re Standing Orders or alternatively Standing Orders may ask for extra time to see if a solution can be arrived at. Failing this the Chair may suspend the issue to establish if further information can be found to putting the problem to rest. In the event the problem is urgent a further meeting will be convened quickly and will be classed as a priority and may be the only issue on the Agenda. Please remember. All Members should be aware at all times the agenda is the only issue on the table when a meeting starts. Members must stay focussed on what is at stake. Anything else will be ruled out of order. People will feel put out about this as it is the only way to maintain order and get the work done. It is always worth it to remember the agenda is the oxygen that keeps the Club strong. People who bring their own agenda to a meeting are always left on their own, where they should be. All meetings usually bring up something irrelevant and they are ruled out of order, most of them know it and accept the ruling. A small minority never see it. It is important all those people who are elected onto a committee remember that the people who elected them put them on the committee and trust them to commit themselves to work in the interest of the organisation/club etc. I have been on committees since 1975/76 continuously without a break. So I know what it is like to be on a committee and for half that time I have watched the Chair at work. They all have one think in common, they make mistakes. Even the really good Chairpersons make them but the important part of all this is every organisation will have a committee and most important of all there will be a Chairperson who will undoubtedly have the duty of ruling people out of order, or worse. The chair is no different from anybody else. They have to perform the unpleasant part of the job as well as the pleasant part. The Chairperson is a very important role and with practise goes a lot of experience not just in chairing meetings they can chair a meeting with two people or two hundred, even more. But the most important aspect of all this is they know how to deal with people and they can do amazing things, they can be great assistance to others in hours or real need. Before I was ever involved with the dogworld which is something I love I was involved with people in the trade union movement and I still am, although I am retired, I still get involved with people on different issues. When you decide to do committee work you will end up chairing meetings among small groups and those groups will get bigger and you will eventually be elected to Chairperson. Congratulations, you have arrived. Con Hacket Secretary’s Address Another year has flown by and I am delighted to present our third Newsletter. I do fear that we focus too much on the Show dogs and do not include enough stories that show the versatility of the Irish Terrier, so if you have stories to share about your Irish that participates in agility, flyball, obedience or one that is a rescue, medical or peata dog please share ! There is a folder on our Gallery page called Irish at Play where I have included various photos of Irish, if you wish your dog to be included please advise. 2016 has been a bitter sweet year, in January we received the sad news that Tom Deegan (Thomeilis) had passed away. Tom joined the Committee of the All Ireland Irish Terrier Club in 1981 with his beloved wife Alice joining in 1983. It was also due to ill health that Alice retired as Secretary , in 2006 , a post she had held for 19 years. Sadly Alice died in 2008. Tom became the Chairperson of the Club in 2004 and remained in this position until ill health caused him to retire. The Committee and Members are saddened by his loss but extremely grateful for the commitment they both showed this Club. One of our overseas Vice- President’s, Jennifer Mulholland , also lost her husband since our last AGM. Ann Canty’s beloved Mother also passed away recently. Our thoughts are with these and other Members’ families as they go through emotionally difficult times. On a positive note this year we are delighted to be celebrating our 50th anniversary Breed Championship Show. We have commissioned a new Club badge to celebrate this event. We are also delighted to have Gertrud Hagstrom (Merrymac) officiating. Our Show is grateful for the generous sponsorship we receive from Royal Canin. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Martina in the IKC Office for her assistance during my research of the Irish Terrier Champions since the foundation of the IKC. At this point I should mention that the names of the owners attached to each dog are the owners as currently registered with the Registration Department of the IKC. In some cases these will differ to the owners at the time of the dog gaining its title. Finally, I would like to thank all those who participated in this Newsletter. I am sure you will join with me in wishing the Club continued success for a further 50 years and beyond. An Introduction to Eddie and Philip O’Brien (Edbrios) In 1935 at the tender age of nine Eddie’s Father bought him his first dog, a Wire Fox Terrier, from James Lawlor, and so began Eddie’s lifetime love and dedication to Terriers. Mr Lawlor was a great friend of Eddie’s Dad and he was a member of the Sporting Terrier Club. The Wire Fox Terrier was by Ir Ch Halliday Supreme. A year or so later an Irish Terrier dog came into Eddie’s life, he was bred by a gentleman from Ranelagh. Both these dogs were used for hunting, a pastime that Eddie carried out along the canal. By the early forties an Irish bitch bred by Mr Upton from Cabra West had joined the pack. In the early 1950’s Eddie contacted Mr Sweeney (Teltown), father to Gerry and Jimmy and Secretary of the All Ireland Irish Terrier Club. Mr Sweeney encouraged Eddie to join the Club. Mr Sweeney was a racing cyclist and held a record for tandem racing that Eddie believes still stands to this day. It was many years later, 1965, before Eddie would join the Committee of the Club. He also applied to the IKC in the late 1950’s to register the affix Nilbud, but this affix had been granted to others and Eddie was given “Edbrios”. Edbrios Tuppence’s pedigree, features many famous dogs of yesteryear, including Red Neville Ballyroan beau and Charlie Pollard’s Depleach Kettledrum as well as a lot of Russetone. She was also a grand daughter of Chip Ryan. Eddie bought Teltown Wish Me Luck (Sandy) from Mr Sweeney. Sandy was a combination of Slemish breeding. Eddie showed her to her Irish title, she was a granddaughter of Benbradagh Blackthorn. The original IKC system involved gaining 15 points, including majors, to earn Champion title. Sandy was shown at Crufts while Eddie’s wife, Joy, was pregnant on their second youngest child. Of the seven children born to Eddie and Joy he was the only one to develop an interest in Terriers, this was of course, Philip. Throughout the years Eddie was greatly involved in both the dogs and the Band that he played in. It was only in the last few months that Eddie retired from his Band. Eddie would spend many weekends driving up and down the country to Shows while Joy remained at home with the other children, she was affectionately known as the “Dog Show Widow”. Joy has always been more partial to Kerry Blues. She enjoys their loving nature! Edbrios Concorde (Rusty) was Philip’s first dog and they were inseparable. Philip’s first memory of Rusty is when Philip was two years old. Their Toy Poodle was rough playing in the garden with Rusty and Philip was concerned for the Poodle as Rusty was so much larger. Rusty was by Edbrios Lucky Number and Teltown Blue Belle Jennie. Edbrios Lucky Number later went to America. Philip’s first memory of an Edbrios litter was at aged four, the pups were by Edbrios Concord and out of Ch Teltown Wish Me Luck. This was a Grandson/Grandmother mating. The pedigree consisted of line breeding to Chip Ryan and Benbradagh Blackthorn and also featured Am. Ch Slemish Waterloo Lad, Slemish Same Again, Shannoside Solitaire (John O'Brien) and Depleach Kettledrum. Cait (Swinpen Bright Boy x Colleen Dunn) was bought from Mrs Conroy for Philip. Mrs Conroy was a great friend of Joy’s. At this time the title of Irish Champion had been changed from the original 15 points with majors to 40 points including 4 majors. Cait had 28 Championship points but never earned her Irish title as she had an unfortunate altercation with a Kerry Blue which resulted in a damaged ear. However that aside Cait was an integral part of Edbrios as a brood bitch. She is behind such influential dogs as Edbrios Duplicate, Edbrios Dirmuid and Edbrios Gobnait of Brazan, to name but a few. Seven months later Nero, Cait’s brother, joined the gang. He would go on to sire Edbrios Duplicate. Nero was a beautiful dog with wonderful expression. Cait and Nero’s Dam, Colleen Dunn was a half brother/half sister mating (Teltown Supreme x Teltown Freebrone GiGi). Teltown Sedra (Teltown Commander Rolf x Teltown Tina) joined Edbrios in 1983. During the 80’s Eddie purchased a Westie as a pet from Billy Pointen who worked in the Brewery, this Westie was down from Famecheck breeding and had a rock hard coat and was well put together. Eddie put her to Starsky of Cooley (sadly at the time of writing the late Ann Taggart (Cooley) has been laid to rest) and they had two resulting pups, a dog and bitch. Philip became hugely interested in stripping coats and honed his skills on these Westies and Irish Terriers. Eddie also acquired a Kerry Blue, Fintona Swanee Mistress, from Johnny McGovern. Philip went to the UK to work in the late 1980’s and in preparation he gave Edbrios Kim to his good friend Tommy Murphy (Rutlan). Kim produced Ch Rutlan Sally and Ir and UK Ch Rutlan Red Rum (Manolette x Edbrios Kim) among others, for Tommy. Rutlan Red Rum was owned in Ireland by the late Hughie Kelly (Clongoes) and later went to live with Paul and Jill Livesey (Riojem) In the UK. A major break through in the Show Ring came under John Doherty of Kerry Blue fame. At the time Philip and Eddie were showing two males against each other, Edbrios Boru (Manolette x Edbrios Kim) and Manolette (Rutlan Kingsman x Harold’s Princess). John asked them to face the dogs off against each other, Edbrios Boru came out on top. He was made up St Patrick’s Day, winning a 10 point major and went over the Crufts winner of the day, Bensheir Beau.He later gained his French and German titles. Boru’s sister Edbrios Freesia was sent to Germany to Hans Gruttner (von der Emsmühle). Another brother Edbrios Murchard was owned by Johnny McGovern (Fintona), he was an Irish Champion and also won a Reserve CC at Crufts in the early 1990’s. Edbrios Dirmuid and Edbrios Seánín (Fairywells Sergeant Pepper x Rutlan Sally) were born in 1993. Interestingly Seánín was stolen and was missing for two months. Eddie and Philip were distraught and had posters up all over the area offering a reward. A local shop keeper recognised Seánín, and the person purporting to be his owner. A reward was proffered and Seánín was returned safely! He then went to live with Ingrid Schmidt (vom Hurtgenwald) in Germany and indeed still features in Ingrid’s line to date. Dirmuid was special from birth, he had a special charisma, was eye catching and had a beautiful rich red coat. He exuded confidence and showmanship. Dirmuid was well travelled earning titles in Ireland, UK, Germany and his International title which was gained in four differed countries. More importantly he earned the respect of Terrier folk all across Europe. In 1994 Edbrios Siobhán and Edbrios Sinead (Fairywells Capable x Rutlan Sally) were born. Their full brother Hardy would also join Ingrid in Germany. At this stage Philip was regularly showing multiple dogs at championship shows up and down the country, often times the breed was without classification and in order to ensure Green Stars the following year numbers were required on the ground. This is unlike the system now which requires Green Stars to be offered in all FCI recognised breeds. Philip and Eddie exhibited both Siobhán and Sinead to their titles. Another point well worth noting, due to the points system (40 points to include 4 majors) that was in place at the time Sinead required 12 Green Stars in order to gain her Irish Champion title. In 1995 Dirmuid won his first Group on St Patrick’s Day under Breed Judge Peter Green and Group Judge Dominic Clancy. This win was featured in the Irish Independent at the time. Edbrios Gobnait of Brazan won her first CC at the tender age of 8 months at the Irish Terrier Association Club Show, this was only the second show she had attended, and her first at Championship level. The same day Alex Noonan and Lindsay Williamson’s son of Duplicate, Naranja Jumping Jack Flash won the DCC and BOB. Edbrios Aonghus, a litter brother to Gobnait, was another top winning Irish bred by Eddie and Philip, he was a World Winner and Portugese Ch and was owned by Concha Gil Azulas and Jose Vincente Sanchez. A photo of Aonghus featured in the Advance Dog Food advert for many years. Edbrios Udar Gach Oilc, (Fairywells Capable x Rutlan Sally – a repeat mating) won a Puppy Stakes at an All Breed Championship Show and therefore qualified for Combined Canine Club’s Pup of the Year Finals. He was the Runner Up on the night. Philip handled a number of Irish in Ireland for others including Val Atkinson’s Wyndam Titan Colleen and Wyndam Mr Majestic and most recently Gertrud Hagstrom’s Merrymac Efficient Dynamix. X gained his UK title while prepared and handled by Philip. He also topped a Group at an All Breed Championship Show in Ireland. A number of Edbrios Irish Terriers have been exported and have had a major influence in the Irish Terrier landscape in Germany, UK, Russia, Czech, Spain and Sweden. Philip himself spent a season in the US working with Clay Coady. During this time he had the pleasure of working with the world famous “Blackwatch Lakeland Terriers”. Of course down through the years Philip also expertly handled other breeds, including my own Kerry Blue, Louisburgh Coismeig Mor. Together Philip and “Fiach” won BIS at the Dublin Irish Blue Terrier Club and while chasing his last point for his title they achieved BIS at Munster Agricultural All Breed Championship Show. At the same time Philip also trimmed the Lakeland, Castledown Judy, for Damien Geoghegan. Indeed Judy was the first Lakeland to earn her Champion title in Ireland in 15 years. On one very successful occasion at Dundalk Show Philip handled Fiach, Dirmuid and a Wyndam Lakeland male who was over from Val and Herbert Atkinson to BOB, all three were shortlisted with Fiach taking second and Dirmuid and myself taking fourth place. In 2000 in grateful appreciation of the hard work and dedication Philip had put in to gaining Fiach’s title I gave him Glenfitor Clodagh at Edbrios. Also in 2000 Philip believes Earl of Codinavilla became John Canty’s first Champion, he was a son of Edbrios Nosey Flynn and his dam was a daughter of Edbrios Duplicate. Nosey Flynn was a full brother of Siobhán and Sinead, he had many majors and points however he never gained his Irish title. John did compete in Terrier racing with him. Eddie and Philip have strived to encourage newcomers to the breed, one such person was Niall O’Gorman. Niall originally showed a Wire Fox Terrier and Philip helped him with the trimming. Niall developed a huge interest in Irish Terriers and took his Edbrios Slaine to her Irish title, she also gained 2 CCs. Unfortunately work commitments have taken Niall away from the Show scene but we hope he will be tempted back some day. In 2002 Clodagh qualified for Irish Show Dog of the Year, and was Second overall. Shortly thereafter after this Jarka moved to Ireland with her Kerry Blue bitch, Dali, and so started the Edbrios domination of the Kerry Blue ring. Together they have raised the professionalism of our sport to a very high level and continuing Philip’s eagerness to understand pedigrees and the success of certain matings have produced litter after litter of high achieving Kerry Blues. Unfortunately for the Irish Terrier breed they no longer have any Edbrios Irish Terriers however they are surrounded by some lovely Louisa Nally’s paintings and drawings of their dogs. Some of Eddie’s favourite dogs down through the years have included Chip Ryan. He had a great coat and was of a very nice type. Teltown General McKee possessed a harsh wiry coat, lovely head and a super back end. General McKee was owned by Countess Stauffenberg in Germany, she was a great Irish Terrier enthusiast, regretfully she passed away recently. Eddie and Philip both admired Pat Dorian’s Fairywell’s Sergent Pepper, John showed him on a long lead. He was a striking dog, he had a lovely neck and outline and was elegant but retained substance. Philip’s list would include Rutlan Kingsman (Sire of Manolette) who was a tough dog and unfortunately, like many other great dogs of the day, did not gain his Irish title. Another dog Philip admired is Teltown Commander Rolf. He sired many great dogs and all were of correct size. Philip also admired Rastaman Autumn Gift (son of Teltown Commander Rolf) who was similar in type. It goes without saying that Eddie imparted his knowledge on Philip and for that Philip is truly grateful. Dickie Jordan also took Philip under his wing and indeed willed his famous painting of Chip Ryan, on his death, to Philip. Dickie was a great character and of course his dog Chip Ryan was hugely famous, indeed he won Champion of Champions in the UK, a feat not achieved by many Irish dogs. Dogs bred by Eddie and Philip that each have admired are Kevin Anderson’s (Kerrykeel) Edbrios Duplicate, Edbrios Gobnait of Brazan and Edbrios Dirmuid. Philip from an early age was an avid student of pedigrees and the resulting progeny. He was convinced the mating of Nero and Edbrios Kim (Teltown Commonder Rolf x Cait), which was a combination of breeding to Swinpen Bright Boy and Teltown Commonder Rolf, would produce quality pups. Indeed he was proven correct as Edbrios Kim proved invaluable as she was behind many generations of successful Edbrios dogs. Eddie and Philip are proud of Duplicate’s influence, particularly in the UK where his excellent movement and Irish Terrier type caused him to produce many top winning dogs. He will therefore remain legendary to fanciers who study the breed. Duplicate also earned his UK title and on one occasion topped the Terrier Group at Crufts. They are currently members of the All Ireland Irish Terrier Club and the Ulster Kerry Blue Terrier Club. They have also been members of and served on committees of Irish Breeds Society, Dublin Irish Blue Terrier Club, Scottish Terrier Club of Ireland and the Lakeland Terrier Club of Ireland. Eddie was the Vice President of our Club for a period from 1980, he has since been re-elected to this position at the AGM in 2015. Philip joined the Committee in 1997 for a number of years. Eddie is a Group 3 Judge and has awarded CCs to Irish Terriers. In 2013 Eddie had the honour and privilege of judging the All Ireland Irish Terrier Club Show for the second time, almost 40 years to the date of his first appointment for the Club. Eddie has now retired from Judging. Philip has judged Groups 3 and 4 and is progressing through Groups 6 and 10 at present. He also awards CCs to Irish Terriers. Philip and Eddie are in agreement on their ideal Irish Terrier, he should be a stand up showy dog that looks straight through you. He should be sharp looking, of correct size and racy outline, neither coarse nor too fine. A long, lean, flat head with well positioned ears sets off his look. He should have a good tail set with plenty behind the tail. An Irish Terrier’s crowning glory is a harsh red double coat and he should be an efficient mover. The breed characteristics that appeal to them are showmanship, the Irish Terrier’s pluckiness and their personality. Eddie and Philip are concerned that there are not enough experienced breeders breeding Irish Terriers at present. They fear that type and correct coats have been lost. Breeders investigating pedigrees and using the correct dog at stud, irrespective of his owner, for the development of the breed appear to be a thing of the past. They would like to see more people involved in the breed and indeed more quality within the dogs themselves. They understand that modern trends mean people are moving away from traditional high maintenance breeds but it is imperative for the breed that people take responsibility for its future development. Philip and Eddie would advise newcomers to the breed to research the breed to ensure the breed suits their lifestyle. They believe strongly that all newcomers need a mentor that has proven themselves with generations of quality breeding. I would like to sincerely thank Eddie, Joy, Philip and Jarka for the hospitality shown to me while researching the material herein. When were you first introduced to Irish Terrier? Dad bought his very first Irish Terrier from Maureen Lynch, North Strand, Dublin. This was during the 1970s and marked the beginning of his great affinity with the breed. Dad brought Teltown Fine Girl You Are aka "Heidi" home and they became inseparable. Did you have a history in other Breeds? For many years, Dad owned German Shepards and had great time for the breed. In latter years, he developed a keen interest in Border Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers. What made you choose to own an Irish Terrier? Dad was very taken with the Irish Terrier's personality and impressive appearance. The breed standard was something he admired. How did you choose your kennel name? The Tomeilis prefix was a combination of the Irish names for Tom and Alice and was very appropriate for their love of the native breed. Did you have any mentors? Dad admired the late Jack Sweeney. (Teltown) Jack encouraged Dad with his love and passion for the breed. When Dad wanted advice on trimming etc, he would take his son, Declan, with him to Jack's house. Jack took him under his wing from the very beginning teaching him the tricks of the trade. Jack's advice would inevitably end with 'now keep this to yourself'. Tom's son, whilst in the shed with them, was more interested in the many racing bikes than the dogs! When did you commence Showing/Breeding/Judging? Dad first started showing Irish Terriers in the late 1970s. He continued showing and breeding down through the years, following on to judging at Terrier Group levels. Have you a favourite Irish Terrier in the breed’s history? Dad spoke over the years, of an Irish, the likes of which would never be found again, in his opinion. This was Teltown General McKee. This dog had it all according to Dad. He was fiery, always on his toes and fearless. General McKee proved himself inside and outside the ring. The excitement at the ring side was second to none when this dog made his entrance. From Dad's recollection, he was like dynamite! Of the dogs you have bred/owned do you have any particular favourites? If so who and why? Heidi, Dad's first Irish, had a very special bond with Dad. Where you found one, you found the other. An exceptional relationship between one man and his dog was that of Teltown Freeborn Gigi and Dad. She really was a free spirited and fiery girl but they understood each other. Gigi could not have been a more loyal companion. And then there was Dudley, Terrijay Clermont Ferrand at Thomeilis! His champion of champions. Please give details of any of your dogs/bitches that have been influential in the Show Ring or in Breeding Programmes in Ireland or abroad? The Tomeilis bloodline can be found throughout Ireland and much of Europe, not to mention the USA. Over the years, it has produced many great and successful dogs and have been bred to the highest of standards. Many of the owners have kept in touch with stories of their dogs, both family pets and the show dog world. Please describe your ideal Irish Terrier. Dad always believed that a true Irish Terrier would be a loveable rogue with an unrivalled temperament. A loyal companion, always ready to protect his territory. It would possess a 'dirty look' in the eye and a fire in its belly, keeping him alert at all times, and a brick red coat. What breed characteristics makes an Irish Terrier the perfect dog for you? The characteristics for his perfect Irish Terrier was a naturally rich red, double coat with a with a wiry texture. It would have had a sleek, brick shaped head with a clear, dark fiery eye. An ability to defend at all times yet gentle when not under threat. Are there any issues that concern you in the breed at present? Dad was passionate that the breed standard should be adhered to at all times to prevent the breed changing its characteristics. He always felt it would be shameful to see a larger dog creeping in, as has been, in the show ring. A smooth coat would not be promoted not to mention an unnatural or enhanced colour. At what level do you Judge? Group 3, any other Groups, BIS? Dad judged all the Terrier breeds at Group level. Are you involved in any Dog Clubs? Please give details? Dad was involved with The Irish Terrier Club, The Native Breeds Club, The Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier Club, The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club. Any other information you wish to provide? Dad was a great promoter of the Irish Terrier. He took great pride in breeding to the highest of standards and being ringside at the Terrier breeds. Is there any advice you would to someone starting out with their first Irish Terrier? Dad was often asked his opinion on becoming the owner of an Irish. He always offered his advice and shared his knowledge of the breed. He described the temperament and personality in great detail and recommended the Irish as a great family pet not to mention an exciting show dog. Written by the Deegan family in memory of their beloved parents, Tom and Alice. 28 All Terrier Association The All Terrier Association is pleased to host an IKC Accredited Module 4 Seminar on Bull Terriers and Welsh Terriers on 04th September 2016 in the Clayton Hotel (formerly Bewley’s Hotel) The Speakers will be Bill Lambert and Rachel Pearce.
