5th annual when life hands you teenagers conference draws crowd
winter 2014
Promoting better mental health and suicide prevention
for teenagers and young adults
quotable quotes from CONFERENCE
“The disorders our youth are fighting today
may very well last into their adulthood. If
we don’t learn more about these disorders,
how can we teach teens how to identify,
cope with, and communicate about their
own struggles?”
Eric Cowan
5th annual when life hands you teenagers conference
draws crowd to learn about youth mental health
Dallas ISD Board Trustee
“The richest times I’ve had with teens are
when I’ve held myself accountable to sitting
across from another human being with a
genuine posture of curiosity.”
Michelle Kinder
Momentous Institute
“There must be a positive mantra in your
child’s brain. Teach your child to balance
the wonderful and the terrible in life.”
Dr. Roger Robinson
Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
“For the first time ever in our nation’s
history, children are more at risk than
adults. We need to change our target—
teach all kids how to deal with distress,
anxiety and trauma.”
Karen Williams
Rainbow Days
“Most people who are suicidal don’t really
want to die. They just want to end the pain.
Given another option, they would rather
live.”
Vanita Halliburton
Karen Williams, Rainbow Days, presented research on distress, anxiety and trauma in children
More than 200 counselors, parents and mental health professionals gathered on Friday, September
19 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas for the 5th annual When Life Hands You Teenagers
conference.
Eric Cowan, Dallas ISD Board Trustee, opened by sharing his personal journey with depression and
highlighting the work Dallas ISD is doing through its Youth and Family Centers, which provide mental
health care for all DISD students and their families.
Michelle Kinder, executive director of Momentous Institute, presented strategies for connecting and
communicating with teens and finding creative ways to facilitate more open conversation.
Child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Roger Robinson offered tools and strategies to help parents and
professionals form a collaborative, nurturing network of support for teens in treatment. He also talked
about the adolescent brain and the importance of sleep, nutrition and mitigating stress.
Karen Williams, director of special programs at Rainbow
Days, presented new research on the prevalence of
distress, anxiety and trauma in U.S. children and the
impact that recognizing and responding to children’s
behaviors can have on their mental and emotional
health.

president’s message
New One-Day Giving Record for GRANT HALLIBURTON
FOUNDATION set on north texas giving day
This year, we partnered with Region 10
Education Service Center to take this
vital training into school districts outside
the Dallas area. These “cluster” trainings
allow multiple school districts in remote
areas of North Texas to come together for
suicide prevention training in their own
community.
Think of the ripple effect: These
outlying communities end up with
more counselors and teachers taking
lifesaving information into more schools.
And ultimately, more young people
with symptoms of depression, anxiety,
addiction, or suicidal behavior are
recognized, rescued and helped.
This year’s conference, “Beyond Bullying: Enhancing Adolescent
Mental Health,” was held at Region 10 Education Service
Center.
For the Grant Halliburton Foundation, it was a banner day,
with donations tripling previous years’ totals on North Texas
Giving Day.
“Are you okay?” It’s hard to believe
that a question so simple can start a
conversation that saves a life.
Since we developed TAG, You’re It!
in 2010, more than 8,100 students,
teachers, counselors, parents and others
have learned how to recognize the signs
of a teenager in suicidal crisis, how to ask
the right questions and how to connect
that person with help.
On August 16, before the whirlwind of a new school year
began, I AM H·E·R·E Coalition presented its fifth annual
conference on bullying prevention to more than 130 educators,
parents and professionals.
On September 18, the North Texas community opened its
hearts and wallets to participate in North Texas Giving Day,
donating a record $26.3 million to 1,580 local non-profits.
Vanita
Halliburton
Yet, it can. This is one of the things we
teach in our suicide prevention program,
TAG, You’re It! TAG stands for Take it
seriously, Ask questions and Get help—a
step-by-step guide to leading a struggling
young person from despair to hope.
BEYOND BULLYING CONFERENCE COVERS NEW GROUND
This year, thanks to a group of generous matching pool
donors, every donation made to the Grant Halliburton
Foundation was matched dollar for dollar up to $19,000. In
addition, all donations made that day also received bonus
funds through the Communities Foundation of Texas’ pool of
more than $1.5 million.
Photos of teens holding signs were central to
this year’s integrated promotional campaign
“We are grateful to all our donors who participated on
North Texas Giving Day, but especially to our pool of
match donors who provided $19,000 in funds to be matched,” Foundation President Vanita
Halliburton said. “By serving as pacesetters and leaders, these individuals helped us raise
more dollars for services than ever before.”
Monies raised will help support the Foundation’s programs of suicide
prevention, support for adolescents and families living with mental
illness and providing comprehensive youth mental health resources.
thank you to our match pool donors

Keynote speaker Rod Pruitt, Safe and Effective Schools
Coordinator from Region 14 Education Service Center, kicked off the morning with a presentation
about new technology and the digital world of cyberbullying.
Dr. Ronnie Pollard, child and adolescent
psychiatrist with Timberlawn Mental Health
System, underscored the link between self-harm
and bullying.
“It is important that adults show care and
concern when they discover a child is cutting,
instead of freaking out,” Dr. Pollard said.
“We need to encourage kids to open up about
what is bothering them.”
Co-chairs Madison Pidgeon and Caroline Early, seniors at
Greenhill School, are hard at work securing clothes from local
boutiques, soliciting raffle items, and lining up student models.
Educating people about what to look
for and what to do is one of the most
important things we do. Sometimes, the
lesson begins with one question.
To date, participating stores include:
Are you okay?
Tickets will be available in January at GrantHalliburton.org.

David B. Miller Family Foundation Presents 6th Annual Beacon of Hope Luncheon
on “Dr. Phil,” CNN, “Today Show,”
“Good Morning America,” and
“Inside Edition,” and is the first
national spokesperson for the
International OCD Foundation.
Jim McIngvale is a well-known
Houston businessman with a
Texas-style success story. He and
Elizabeth McIngvale-Cegelski and Jim McIngvale
his wife, Linda, started Gallery
Furniture in 1981 with $5,000
and quickly turned it into a highly successful enterprise through innovative
marketing. Three decades later, it remains one of the most iconic
businesses in the Houston area. Jim’s strong work ethic is matched by his
philanthropy and exceeded only by his commitment to his family.
The David B. Miller Family Foundation is the presenting sponsor for the
sixth annual Beacon of Hope luncheon to be held on Wednesday, February
11 at the Westin Galleria Dallas hotel. All proceeds from the luncheon
benefit the Grant Halliburton Foundation.
Luncheon speakers Dr. Elizabeth McIngvale-Cegelski and her father, Jim
McIngvale, will share the compelling story of their family’s journey through
years of battling severe mental illness, told from the viewpoints of both
parent and child.
Elizabeth was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) at
the age of 12. At one point doctors believed her OCD was too severe to
be treatable. Now in control of the OCD rituals that once controlled her
life, she has earned a PhD in social work and is a licensed therapist. She
founded the Peace of Mind Foundation, a non-profit organization that
raises money for OCD research and education. She has appeared nationally
Chairs for the 2015 luncheon are Maloree and Bob Banks. Sponsorships
from $500 to $10,000 are available at www.GrantHalliburton.org/
