2013 First National Bowl Football State Championship
Welcome from ASAA
On behalf of the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) and our
corporate partners, welcome! Over
the next two weekends you’ll see how
Alaska’s passion for the pigskin has
given rise to a new level of celebration in high school football. In 2003,
ASAA and First National Bank Alaska
transformed the state-culminating event
into Alaska’s ONLY football bowl. This
grand tradition continues through the
efforts of a dedicated committee, who
have organized local celebrities, special events, and in-depth recognition
to heighten the excitement and underscore the glory of the game during
these championships.
even more excitement to the First National Bowl!
Traveling Trophy
A beautiful, huge traveling trophy for
each championship has been donated
by First National Bank Alaska. Winners of the large, medium, and small
school tournaments will take this trophy
home for a year, before it is passed on
to the next year’s champions.

20-Year Flashback – 1993 Dimond State Football Champions
Crown Dimond King
Lynx deny Ravens to win state title
By: Michael Vanausdeln
Anchorage Daily News
Redemption for an often-denied team, last second
bombs for the defenders of the crown and a state title
for an outgoing coach.
Dimond’s 20-19 state football championship win over
defending champion Eielson had all that and more in
front of 3,000 fans at Anchorage Football Stadium
Saturday.
For the Lynx, the win erased the painful memory of last
year’s state playoff nightmare. For Eielson, it will begin
a new memory: coming up 37 yards short of winning its
20th straight game.
And for Dimond head coach Danny Stevens, who considered resigning after last season, the championship
ended his Lynx coaching career on the happiest note
possible.
“This is what I came back for,” said Stevens, who will
move to Tennessee next week. “I wanted to come back
and win the state championship. That was my goal.”
Eielson for a second chance on the game’s last drive,
but it turned into a microcosm of the entire contest. The
Dimond secondary – especially Dietrich Moore, Dauris
Aldridge, and Garland Pittman – kept the Raven receivers covered all day, forcing Leonard to run.
One the last two Eielson drives, Lenoard completed just
two of six passes and ran four times. On the last run, the
senior rushed for a 7 yard gain with 40 seconds left to
give the Ravens a first down at the Dimond 43.
They looked like ghouls.
“It was to get the guys up a little bit,” said Klingenmeyer. “In a championship game, anything goes.”
Halloween is still a week away, but the 8-1 Dimond Lynx
can dress up as champions after beating an Eielson
squad that hadn’t lost since the 1991 state championship game.
But Leonard couldn’t find anybody open on the game’s
final two plays, ending the game and his wonderful
career with two straight incompletions.
The Lynx also pulled off its most ambitious goal: sending
their head coach off into the sunset, holding a championship trophy in thi air like a cowboy’s pistol firing
away in celebration.
“They covered people very well,” said Nystrom. “Mike
had a hard time to throw, but we had a hard time
getting people open.”
“I have mixed emotions about leaving,” said Stevens.
“But it was an exciting game. That’s football. There’s no
better way to leave.”
Eielson also had trouble-stopping Klingenmeyer. The 6
foot, 205 pound senior consistently plowed through the
Eielson defense like he was possessed.
Dimond: 6-8-0-6 – 20
Eielson: 0-7-6-6 – 19
In fact, Klingenmeyer looked like he did have a devil
inside him. He and Lorenz – voted the offensive and defensive players of the game , respectively – painted their
faces white with black circles drawn around their eyes.
But Stevens and the Lynx got the championship –
Dimond’s first since 1983 – by the smallest of margins.
The Ravens, who came into the game hoping to hand
head coach Buck Nystrom his 100th career coaching
victory, drove 51 yards in the final two minutes of the
game, yearning for a game winning touchdown.
Eielson, though, had no timeouts during the entire drive,
which ended with quarterback Mike Leonard – who
had trouble finding open receivers all day – throwing
the ball from the Dimond 37 yard line and over the
endzone as the final seconds ticked off.
When the final whistle blew, the Lynx mobbed each other and hugged Stevens, who ended his Lynx coaching
career with a 21-19 record.
“It was close,” said Dimond senior Korey Klingenmeyer,
who rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns. “But
that just makes the victory that much sweeter.”
The victory tasted like honey to a team that won its first
Cook Inlet Football Conference title in nine years last
season, but lost to Soldotna in the state semifinals.
This year’s team played on the emotion of past disappointments: never forgetting the Soldotna loss nor the
47-14 defeat at Eielson on Sept. 4.
“The guys from last year’s team have been calling,” said
Dimond defensive tackle Jami Lorenz, who had one sack
and numerous tackles. “I’m gonna call or write them all
now.”
One thing that should be included in Lorenz’s rundown
is that Eielson, a three-time Railbelt Conference champion that’s been in the state title game for the past three
years, came oh-so-close to taking the game away from
the Lynx.
Eielson fullback John Henderson completed a nine play,
62 yard drive late in the fourth quarter with a 1 yard
touchdown plunge, cutting Dimond’s lead to one point.
The Ravens went for the two point conversion only to
come up inches short when Leonard ran the football on
a sneak and was stopped at the goal line.
“He’s 6-6 and they said he didn’t cross the line,” said
Eielson head coach Buck Nystrom, whose team ended
the season with a 10-1 record. “How far can he extend
himself?”

10-Year Flashback – 2003 Kenai Kardinals Medium School State Football Champions
Kenai keeps title
with shutout
runs in each of the first two quarters to help
the Kardinals build a 26-0 halftime lead.
Kenai struck quickly, too – all four scoring
drives lasted less than 2 minutes, 33 seconds.
By: Van Williams
Anchorage Daily News
Last season, Chappell moved from wide receiver to quarterback just two games before
the playoffs. After leading the Kardinasl to
the state tile as a rookie quarterback, there
was no doubt who would quarterback Kenai
this season.
Small Schools: Kardinals stop
Eielson to repeat as champions
The Eielson Ravens entered the small school
football championship riding a five game
winning streak and sporting a high scoring
offense that averaged 32 points a game.
But it was a different story Saturday afternoon against the Kenai Kardinals. Eielson
had difficulty crossing midfield, never mind
the goal line.
Kenai’s stingy defense and quick strike offense turned the championship game into a
mismatch as the Kardinals rolled to a 46-0
victory at Anchorage Football Stadium for
their second straight state championship.
Kenai players stormed the field after the final whistle, congratulating each other and
raising their helmets into the air. The outcome was never in question, but the players
waited until it was official before the party
started.
“This is the best feeling of my life,” said Kenai defensive lineman Kenny Dormandy.
The Kardinals (9-1) ended the season on
a nine-game winning streak. And like last
season, when they beat Soldotna 7-0 in the
title game, they wrapped things up with a
shutout.
“The credit has to go to the kids because
they made plays,” head coach Jim Besson
said. “It was a great team effort, but we’ve
been doing that all year long.”
Kenai owned a 369-71 advantage in yardage and seemed able to score at will, thank
largely to the potent tandem of quarterback
Cole Chappell and running back Dakota
Craig, who combined for six rushing touchdowns, including four by Craig.
Chappell orchestrated Kenai’s option-heavy
offense beautifully. When he wasn’t keeping
the ball for large chunks of yardage, he was
pitching it to Craig for runs to the outside.
Craig, a workhorse who had 29 carries,
rushed for a game-high 176 yards – eight
times more than the entire Eielson backfield
– and Chappell added 104 yards on 12
carries.
“We got blocks all day long,” Craig said.
“Big holes.”
Chappell and Craig exchanged touchdown
“He’s really developed as a leader in terms
of reading what the defenses are doing,”
Beeson said. “he made some plays today.
Running the option, he was phenomenal.”
But it was Kenai’s defense which set the tone
for the blowout, shutting down Eielson’s air
assault and invading the Ravens’ backfield
so often that you’d think the Kardinals knew
what the Ravens were going to do before the
ball was snapped.
“We pretty much knew on every play what
they were gonna run,” said Craig, who
plays linebacker on defense.
“That’s the most pressure we’ve seen all
year,” said Eielson coach Dave DeVaughn,
whose team finished with an 8-2 record.
“We knew they were coming, but they flat
out beat us on the offensive line and the defensive line.”
“If you haven’t seen it before, its hard to get
used to it in one game. There’s no second
chance.”
Kenai became the second team to defend
its state title joining the Nikiski Bulldogs of
2000 and 2001, since the small school
playoff system began four years ago.
Beeson, in his 14th season with the Kenai
program took about five minutes to savor the
title before looking ahead.
“We want to be the first team to win three in
a row,” Beeson said. “It’s never too early to
start thinking about next year.”
Eielson: 0-0-0-0 – 0
Kenai: 14-12-7-13 – 46
A swarming, aggressive defense keyed by
seniors Geordon Main and Dormandy, and
sophomores Clint Keener and Papapa Nicholas, collected nine
sacks, forced seven
punts and limited Eielson’s offense to just
four first downs.
The most telling statistic though, was that
the Ravens moved the
ball into Kenai territory only once in the
final 24 minutes.
“We pride ourselves
on defense,” Craig
said.
Eielson quarterback
Evan Skinner, who
entered the game as
the state’s fifth leading
passer, was a nonfactor as his arm strength
was nullified by a
blood thirsty pass rush
that regularly chased
him from the pocket.
Skinner, a junior, completed just 2 of 11
passes for 49 yards
– 60 below his season
average – and threw
an interception on the
final play of the first
half.

10-Year Flashback – 2003 East Anchorage Thunderbirds Large School State Football Champions
T-birds dancing happy
after state title victory
By: Matt Nevala
Anchorage Daily News
Casey Flair, ever the flamboyant front man,
started East High’s party a little early. He
began his dance, a thunderbird flap of the
arms mixed with a steady soulful bounce off
the Anchorage Football Stadium turf as the
final seconds vanished from the scoreboard
Saturday in the state football championship.
It didn’t take long for the rest of the boys in
East’s gridiron band to get into the act. Before long, the entire team was bouncing and
screaming.
“East-side.” “T-Birds.”
The grand finale for quite a show. “Not
much rhythm, though,” Flair said. So what.
Champions can close however they want.
The second ranked East High football team
overcame its share of adversity en route to
claiming the large school state title with a
33-15 win over top ranked Juneau-Douglas.
The Thunderbirds (8-2) fell into a double digit
hole, lost their leading rusher to injury and
trailed for almost three full quarters.
But in the end, they won their seventh straight
game, did a little dancing and hoisted their
first championship trophy since 1990.
“This group is so much fun,” said Roger
Spackman, who concluded his fourth season
with his first title. “Sometimes, we had to pull
them back a bit for having too much fun. I’m
so happy. I’m sitting here thinking maybe this
isn’t a big deal for me, but it sure is for the
kids.”
Flair, East’s star senior wide receiver, and
compatriot Derek Laws, the senior quarterback, capped their record-setting careers
by hooking up for three touchdowns. Flair
caught eight of Laws’ nine completions for
102 yards.
But the usually air-heavy Thunderbirds leaned
on the legs of backup senior tailback Ozelle
Jamestown and senior fullback Hayward Gabourel to grind past Juneau.
Jamestown and Gabourel combined for
204 of East’s 272 rushing yards after being
pressed into more active duty when Ryan
Stickler, who entered the game with a team
high 1,089 yards in nine games, sprained
his left ankle in the first quarter.
“At the start of our sophomore season, Derek
and I told coach we wanted to make a legacy,” said Flair, the state’s all-time leading receiver in catches and touchdowns. “Tonight
we did that, but after three years it wasn’t
just about Derek and me. It was about everyone.”
Stickler’s injury came one play after Juneau
superback Brian Felix cruised 76 yards to
give the Crimson Bears a 15-0 lead.
“When Ozelle checked in I told him it was
him and me,” said Gabourel, a 5-foot-11,
225-pound mound of lead blocker. “I was
going to block hard or run hard. When he
got the ball, either way, I was going to do
my job.”
Jamestown, behind the dominant play of
East’s offensive line, rushed for a game high
162 yards and two touchdowns.
“Our offensive line played so well, we knew
we could almost run at will in the second
half,” Spackman said. “Ozelle had to deal
with some injuries and other things this season, so it’s great he is getting some of the
glory now.”
Jamestowns’ first touchdown run, a 10-yard
run in the third quarter, gave East a 19-15
edge and erased the memories of Juneau’s
early 15-0 lead. He added a 29-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.
Juneau, playing in its first title game since
becoming a varsity program in 1991, tired
everything it could to keep East from running past it. But the Crimson Bears, dealing
with Felix’s lingering knee injury suffered in
last weekend’s semifinals and a knock to
the knee of all out weapon C.J. Keys in the
second half Saturday, couldn’t withstand the
onslaught.
“Maybe we got too overconfident too quick,”
said Felix, a junior who ran for 137 yards on
25 carries, but only 61 yards after long, first
quarter touchdown. “East have
such a good offensive and defensive line and so many good
players on the team.”
Felix insisted his sprained knee
didn’t hinder him. “I’m all right,
I’ve got the entire off-season to
heal up,” he said.
East’s defense held Juneau (8-3)
to 226 total yards, 139 below
its season’s average. The Thunderbirds also avenged a 42-18
regular season loss at Juneau.
That and the state title would
make anyone get their groove
on.
“There is just so much excitement, so much emotion,” Flair
said. “We had to jump for joy
because everything we have
done has finally paid off.”
