OVERLOOK “Created for the members and friends of Wintergreen Resort” Winter 2006/2007 Guaranteed Learn to Ski Art of snowmaking Holiday family traditions Calendar of events what’s new? WASHINGTON’S FAVORITE SKI AND GOLF RESORT Wintergreen Resort topped two categories of this year’s WashingtonPost.com Readers’ Choice Awards. Voted as the best place to golf and ski, the awards confirm that Wintergreen is the region’s top choice for year-round recreation. For the second year in a row, the readers of WashingtonPost.com named Wintergreen the “Best Ski Resort.” With 45 holes on two championship golf courses, Wintergreen was also named the “Best Golf Course.” To view a list of all the winners, visit WashingtonPost.com. EVEN MORE ON THE MOUNTAIN This winter, there are plenty of new things in store for guests on our mountain. For those new to skiing and snowboarding, Wintergreen is opening a brand new beginner area on Discovery Ridge and enhancing the children’s learning area at The Treehouse. Both areas will have new beginner-friendly conveyor lifts and terrain designed specifically for guests learning the sport. In addition, the resort is adding new beginner features to its terrain park. To make sure you spend your time on the slopes and not in line, Wintergreen has invested in rental shop improvements and new HEAD rental equipment. And experienced skiers and snowboarders will appreciate this year’s improved snowmaking coverage. Wintergreen has expanded its world-class York® snowmaking system, adding 10 new snowmaking guns to the expert Highlands slopes and two to the new learning areas. WINTERGREEN PARTNERS WITH HEAD® Wintergreen Resort and HEAD, a global manufacturer and marketer of premium sports equipment, recently announced a strategic partnership that will encompass a variety of winter season special events and co-marketing efforts. Wintergreen is one of four U.S. ski areas chosen by HEAD for this partnership. As part of the agreement, Wintergreen’s rental shop will feature brand-new HEAD equipment this season. In January, Wintergreen is hosting a special HEAD Women’s Ski Clinic with professionals Lisa Densmore and Pam Fletcher, as well as a visit from Olympian Jonny Moseley in March. The partnership also includes retail opportunities with Freestyle ski and snowboard shop, including a discounted HEAD equipment package for guests participating in Wintergreen’s “Guaranteed Learn to Ski & Ride” program. For more information on HEAD, visit www.head.com. THE WINNER! 2006 AWARD From Toddlers to “Never-Evers,” Wintergreen Resort’s Snowsports School Features a “Learn to Ski Guarantee” T 5 wice named the “Best Ski Resort” by the readers of WashingtonPost.com, Wintergreen Resort not only boasts the region’s best combination of natural snow and automated snowmaking equipment, but it also makes good on its promise that anyone, at any age, can learn to ski or snowboard. Equipped this season with a brand-new learning area and 150-foot conveyor lift, Wintergreen offers guests from the age of two to 82 the opportunity to learn to ski or snowboard with its unique “Guaranteed Learn to Ski & Ride” program, featuring a free beginner lesson with each equipment rental. Guests will be turning, stopping and riding a lift during their first lesson. If not, they can repeat the lesson at no charge. “Within a typical hour-and-a-half lesson, at least 98 percent of our never-beforeskiing guests are able to link turns and ski in control,” said Brian Coon, Snowsports School Director for Wintergreen Resort. “With our world-class instructors, new beginner area and conveyor lift, this winter everyone should leave Wintergreen Resort with the ability to ski or snowboard.” After the guest’s first lesson, Wintergreen issues a “Guaranteed Learn to Ski & Ride” card that that allows them to return two more times at a discounted rate that includes a beginner lift ticket and advanced beginner lessons. Once they complete these visits, they are eligible to use their card to purchase a discounted Ski & Ride Season Pass and a complete HEAD® equipment package from Freestyle ski and snowboard shop. Wintergreen’s instructors, certified by the Professional Ski Instructors of America and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors, are adept at teaching all skill levels on the slopes – from beginners to experts. For more experienced skiers and riders who want to advance to the next level while improving technique, intermediate and advanced lessons are available. “If someone is planning a ski trip out west, for example, they should come to Wintergreen to take a few lessons and tune up,” said Coon. “With some preparation, their experience will be much better when they get there. Our Highlands terrain has some great pitches, and with the high-speed six-pack serving that area, everyone can get in a lot of ski time and, as a result, become a better skier over time.” For a complete list of special Wintergreen Snowsport School dates – from Women’s Ski Seminars to Adult Snowboard Clinics – please visit wintergreenresort.com. Parents can engage their children in quality snowsports instruction and fun activities at the resort’s award-winning Treehouse, where VCRs and video games take a back seat to skiing, snowboarding and winter recreation. The Treehouse offers kids their own ski area and 90-foot conveyor lift, allowing them have fun while learning. “Our Treehouse staff is phenomenal with the kids,” said Coon. “The instructors are terrific at getting the children jazzed and excited about skiing and snowboarding.” “The Wintergreen Snowsports School offers private lessons to kids from the age of ...continued on page 6 www.wintergreenresort.com This season, Wintergreen is also offering special two-day women’s ski clinics and adult beginner snowboard clinics. ...continued six and up, as well as group programs,” said Coon. “But the Treehouse takes the little ones en masse for all-day programs and offers many indoor activities as well. And, because the Treehouse has its own ski area and lift, the little guys don’t get tired so fast, ensuring they’ll spend more time learning in addition to having fun in the snow.” When asked if there are ever any daredevils in the younger group lessons, Coon says there are always a few. “They’ve been on the hill before or they’ve done it three or four days, so they’re not so much interested in skill, they just like to go downhill. There are always a few that just want to go straight and fast. However, depending on the age of the group, we play a lot of games, offer challenges, and do a lot of partner skiing – we team them up so they have to play and follow the leader. These small challenges are safe, fun and effective ways to increase their learning.” But you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the slopes at Wintergreen! Adults can learn how to ski just as easily as the kids. In fact, many retirees come to the resort to learn to ski or even snowboard. Now that they have more time, they want to experience everything. “They’ve been skydiving or whitewater rafting, and they’ve never learned to ski and don’t want to miss out on any outdoor experience,” reports Coon. “Consequently, they’re enjoying themselves here at the resort, learning a new skill, and not home worrying about their health or other things. We even had a snowboarder who was in her early eighties and she did just fine!” One of the resort’s greatest features is its top-of-theline snowmaking equipment. No matter how icy the slopes become, Wintergreen’s York® snowmaking system ensures that guests have a terrific surface – light and powdery snow – which is better for beginners. The regulars obviously appreciate it as well. Wintergreen Resort is considered to have one of the Mid-Atlantic’s top snowsports schools. “Combined with breathtaking mountain views, stellar snow surfaces, state-of-the-art grooming and the most enticing beginner-to-expert terrain, Wintergreen is the best place to learn to ski or snowboard,” Coon concludes. For more information on the Wintergreen Snowsports School or to schedule lessons, call 434-325-2100 or visit wintergreenresort.com. Holiday Pampering AT THE 7 WINTERGARDEN SPA Make plans to visit the Wintergarden Spa this winter for a special holiday treatment, available for a limited-time only. Through research we have also found that the berry’s antioxidant properties are highly regarded and help to purify and protect our skin. Come and sit with us and enjoy this luxurious pedicure that will prepare you for the holiday season ahead. For appointments, call the Wintergarden Spa at 434-325-8185. Available: December 1, 2006 through January 31, 2007 www.wintergreenresort.com body, release tension and renew the spirit. There’s “Snow” Place While Wintergreen is renowned for its natural snowfall, the resort is also home to one of the world’s most sophisticated snowmaking systems. Installed during the 2002-2003 winter season and continuously upgraded, this state-of-the-art York® computerized snowmaking system allows Wintergreen to consistently offer the Mid-Atlantic’s best skiing and snowboarding surfaces. Wintergreen is the only ski area on the East Coast to have 100 percent of its terrain covered by automated snowmaking. This complex system involves approximately 40,000 linear feet of pipeline, more than 400 snowguns and 45 weather stations. The result is gold-standard snowsports surfaces, with a uniformity of depth and consistency of snow quality from the top of the slopes to the bottom. How is snow made? Wintergreen Resort makes snow from the same two ingredients as Mother Nature – air and water. The difference is that Wintergreen has a 100 percent computerized system that controls the ratio of air to water, the timing, and the placement of the snow. This state-of-the-art system includes a network of more than 400 powerful snowguns, underground hydrants and weather sensors that control the precise mixture of air and water required for the best quality snow. The sensors, which are located on the edge of the slopes, continuously monitor humidity and temperature while sending signals to computer-controlled hydrants that are buried under each snowgun. How cold does it have to be to make snow? Wintergreen’s computerized York snowmaking system calculates the “wet bulb” temperature, which is a mathematical function of the dry bulb (ambient) temperature and the level of humidity. Due to the complicated relationship between temperature and humidity, it’s actually possible to make snow at temperatures above freezing. Likewise, on a humid day, it may not be possible to make snow even though the thermometer indicates that it’s below freezing. 9 The weather sensors are located along the edge of the slopes and look like white bird houses. The weather sensors’ job is to continuously monitor the amount of moisture in the air. As the moisture level rises and falls throughout the day, messages are sent to the hydrant under each snowgun and adjustments are instantly made in the balance of water to air. When there is more moisture in the air, there is less water in the mix. These adjustments continue non-stop while snow is being made. What’s so special about “automated” snowmaking? Manufactured snow is made from water and compressed air. Traditional or manual snowmaking systems require thousands of man hours every winter to adjust snowguns according to the appropriate time, place, temperature and wind condition. Even with all this effort, it’s nearly impossible to manually make all the necessary adjustments required to create the optimal snow quality desired by skiers and snowboarders. York’s fully automated snowmaking system can create a perfect snowstorm with the click of a button. From one computer, a snowmaker can control all the snowmaking hydrants on the system. Consequently, manufactured snow is often judged superior to Mother Nature’s version due to its consistency and structure. What are the benefits of Wintergreen’s snowmaking system? Although skiers, snowboarders and snowtubers barely notice snowmaking in progress (it’s often happening at night while they sleep), they do appreciate the quality and abundance of snow produced at Wintergreen Resort. The snowmaking system has extended Wintergreen’s snowsports season, and the resort is able to recover more quickly from rain or unseasonably warm periods. www.wintergreenresort.com What are the components of Wintergreen’s snowmaking system? Wintergreen’s York snowmaking system includes powerful snowguns and weather sensors with computer chips. There is also a network of air, water and computer cables buried underground. Output is controlled by a central computer located in the resort’s compressor control building. Awesome Fun for Kids! The Treehouse is headquarters for our acclaimed children’s programs for ages 2½ to 12. Counselors are “fun experts” and know how to keep everyone active and happy, all while learning new skills combining “safety first” supervised activities with on-the-snow adventures. This year the Treehouse offers kids their own snow-covered learning area and new 90-foot conveyor lift, which resembles the “people movers” you see in most airports. The new lift will ensure that children don’t get tired as fast, so they spend more time learning in addition to having fun in the snow. Children are grouped into programs according to age and ability. For the youngest adventurers, the Treehouse offers “Snow Play,” which allows three-year-olds to get comfortable on skis and play games in the snow. Children showing proficient skills may advance to “Mogul Monkeys.” Designed for children age four to 12, “Mogul Monkeys” includes ski lessons, as well as indoor camp activities. For more advanced children age six and up, the “Ski Buddy” program provides a companion for youngsters who already know how to ski, stop, turn and use the chairlift. And the popular “Mountain Explorers” program, offered through the Wintergreen Snowsports School, provides a full day on the slopes with a dedicated instructor, as well as lunch and snacks. For children who prefer to have fun indoors, the “Kids in Action” program is a perfect fit. For ages 2½ to 12, “Kids in Action” includes organized activities such as arts & crafts, group games, music and stories. The Treehouse also offers “Kids Night Out,” an evening featuring games and activities. At Wintergreen Resort, there’s a program available for every child. For Treehouse reservations and more information on what’s available during your visit, please call the Treehouse at 434-325-8177. 11 Families come to Wintergreen Resort each year to celebrate holiday traditions of all shapes and sizes. WINTERGREEN NATURE FOUNDATION The Wintergreen Nature Foundation presents Nelson County history This winter, the Wintergreen Nature Foundation follows the individual threads of personal stories as they weave the rich cultural tapestry that was early Nelson County. Join researchers, educators and descendants as they tell the unique stories that shaped this community’s history. The settlement of Nelson County began more than one hundred years after the settlement of Jamestown as Virginia planters entered the Rockfish Valley and encounter Scots-Irish filtering in from the Valley of Virginia. Allen Howard, now considered the first permanent settler in the county, claimed land along the waterway of the James River in Albemarle County near a town that we refer to today as Howardsville. Howard takes his place with Peter Jefferson, Joshua Frye, Thomas Walker and William Cabell as a group referred to as the “renaissance men of Albemarle County.” (Nelson County was part of Albemarle County until 1761.) Living in faded structures and colonial roads, the stories come alive in ballads and family journals that capture important events in the community’s past. For dates and more information on upcoming history seminars, please contact the Wintergreen Nature Foundation at (434) 325-8169 or visit www.twnf.org.
