Jim Strath, President of Curl manitoba provided this comment “this new logo and name symbolizes the beginning of a new and revitalized mCa. it represents a modern version of an organization steeped n tradition that is looking ahead to a bright future. Curling in manitoba is changing as is the way the mCa operates. the reduction in the size of the board of Directors from 44 to 12 and shift in the focus of priorities from that of an operational board to a policy board provided much of the impetus behind the change. “as we strive to operate more efficiently and effectively as a business we felt now was a good time to change the face of our organization as well.” said Shane ray, Executive Director of Curl manitoba. “we hope that clubs and curlers will take the change in board and name as signs that we are moving forward and willing to make changes. Changes that will benefit the curling community and help manitoba remain as a leader in Canada in curling.” the name change not only follows a trend in sports but is also meant to signify that we are no longer a collection of multiple groups but a single curling community under one umbrella working for the development and advancement of the sport. the logo and accompanying brand identity were developed by local brand strategy company Cocoon. Kyle romaniuk, brand Director of Cocoon stated, “we were honoured that Curl manitoba choose Cocoon to help revitalize their brand identity.” 4 Curl manitoba YEarbooK – 2009/10 Curl Manitoba – brandmark introduction Curl manitoba wanted to create an icon to represent curling across the province without using any of the literal curling symbolism or images that would be expected (the shape of manitoba, a bison, a curling rock, house or broom). in order to grow, this new identity needed to echo the progression that curling has experienced as a sport and a bright and promising future, without forgetting our strong roots that have made curling – and Curl manitoba – an important part of our culture. our new brandmark is created from the circle of a curling house. the traditional outer ring has been broken down into four parts – representing the four members of a team – that come together to represent teamwork. these pieces come together and overlap to create a feeling of strength, never-ending movement, and continuous growth of the sport. the brandmark’s typography has been custom designed to echo the symbol and help emphasize the overall feel that has been inspired by both vintage and modern Canadian athletics. “the evolution of Curl manitoba was a good fit for Cocoon because they were ready for change – both inside and out.” said Chuck Phillips, Creative Director of Cocoon. “we are very lucky to have the expertise of the people from Cocoon work with us on this project. they are an amazing group that took our thoughts, and feelings and turned them into an idea and image that we think reflects our future goals and objectives while respecting our past. we look forward working with them into the future as we work towards promoting the game of curling.” stated Shane ray. Hopefully this will not deter participation as this is a temporary adjustment. let’s hope we will be cheering two manitoba teams in the 2010 olympics in Vancouver. i would like to thank our many sponsors for their continued support without which would surely diminish our sport. Please continue to support them in the manner that they support us. Finally i would like to thank our staff for their commitment dedication and hard work throughout the year, and the many volunteers who spend countless hours making events of all kinds happen. Your dedication to the sport is appreciated. i wish everyone a successful season and whether you are a curler or builder, i hope your goals are all met! Each year the Foundation awards four $1,000 scholarships and up to 14 $250 Sport awards to worthy junior curlers. these are given to active junior curlers who are continuing their education and have volunteered time to their school, community and curling club. i am hoping that more curlers become aware of these awards and encourage junior curlers to submit applications. information is available on the Curl manitoba website. the lifestyle of today has contributed to the hectic pace we all have. it is becoming more difficult to get volunteers to support sport activities at all levels. the Foundation board meets six or seven times each season so it is not a huge task to volunteer here. if you are interested in serving on this board please contact the Curl manitoba office or any of the board members listed below. You are sure to enjoy the experience. i wish all manitoba curlers much good luck this season. Have fun! She has served various positions on the Executive of the Portage ladies Curling Club including President, treasurer, Secretary, and Scott and Senior representative to the mlCa District meeting. She also served on the board of the Portage Curling Club as ways and means Co-Chairperson and Junior Chairperson, responsible for junior clinics, and active junior high School league, and a high school league. She began the first little rockers program in the Portage Curling Club and coached high school teams. Diane has volunteered to Chair or Co-chair committees at events hosted by the Portage Curling Club such as the 1986 Canadian Senior Championships (Souvenirs), the 1990 uniroyal goodrich world Junior Championships (admissions), the 2000 Canadian Senior Championships (men’s and women’s breakfasts), the 1994 Free Press and Pepsi Junior Championships, and the 2002 target Junior Championships (Co-Chair), the 1999 Safeway Select (banquet Co-Chair and decorating Volunteer), 2003 Safeway Select (Decorating Co-chair). as well, she volunteered at junior clinics, berth bonspiels, the mcCain Superspiel west and mnP Prairie Classic held in the club. She received the 2003 lauree Clifford award for outstanding service to the Portage Curling Club and the 1990 Jean Jackson memorial award for contribution to the Portage ladies Curling Club. in 2004, as Sport Co-Chair at the provincial mSoS games in Portage, she was instrumental in introducing curling as an event. For the 2006 Canadian Senior games, she sat on the Executive of the host committee, assisted the Curling Co-Chair, and also participated on the manitoba team that won a gold medal in the mixed Curling Division. Diane served six years on the manitoba Curling Foundation and five years as regional Director on the board of the manitoba Curling association. From every volunteer opportunity Diane feels she has always gained more than she has given. For example, when the Sadler’s volunteered to billet Sweden’s team lindholm during the 1990 world Junior Championships, little did they realize the long and wonderful relationships and opportunities that would evolve from that curling experience. the same holds true for the myriad of opportunities that have been offered by competing and serving within the manitoba Curling association. “it is a great but humbling honour to be recognized by this nomination.” Diane looks forward to continuing to serve and promote this great sport. www.Curlmanitoba.org 23 new honourAry lIfe MeMbers greg MIlloy reg began curling in 1955 in Elm Creek at the age of ten. after finishing school he moved to winnipeg in 1962 and curled at the Eaton and Fort garry before becoming a member of the St. Vital Curling Club in 1969. greg was elected to the board of Directors in 1976-77 and served as President in 1986-87. in 1987-88, he was the Club representative to the mCa and was subsequently elected to the mCa Council the following year where he served on various committees and remained on Council until 1990-91. over the years, greg has chaired two Provincial mixed, one Provincial masters and served on two Provincial Junior Championship Committees. His love for the sport is based in large part with the fundamental life-values that curling demonstrates in sportsmanship, teamwork and the constant drive to improve. tony got his first taste of curling at the Fort garry Curling Club on main Street in the early 60’s. He became involved in the administrative side by helping to organize a mixed league at the Highlander Curling Club in the mid-sixties, where he met his wife, Dianne. mixed curling was enjoyable and allowed tony to curl at a number of city clubs, including the granite Curling Club, during his employment at great west life assurance Company in the early 70’s and later at the grain Exchange Curling Club, in the mid 70’s when he started his professional accounting career at manitoba Hydro. in the early 70’s, tony became a shareholder/member of the Charleswood Curling Club and was eventually recruited to the board of Directors and served several years as treasurer including President in the early 90’s. as a Past-President of the Charleswood, he was nominated to the mCa Elected Council and served several years on a number of committees, including Credentials & Special Events and the meyers norris Penny mixed Championship Committee. in the mid 90’s, tony felt his contribution to “grass roots” curling in manitoba would be better served through the manitoba Curling Foundation, when an opportunity came up to serve as treasurer. For 10 years, tony served on the manitoba Curling Foundation board as the treasurer and had the opportunity to work with some of the province’s great individuals, who combined to make that decade a very memorable one. the opportunity to work at the club level at Charleswood, after his early retirement from manitoba Hydro in December 2005, prompted his decision to “retire” from the manitoba Curling Foundation. all those years of curling and being involved in various curling administrative functions provided a vast treasure chest of wonderful memories. to be recognized and nominated to receive an Honourary life membership in the manitoba Curling association is simply the “icing on the cake.” Host for the Dec. 18-22 Junior Men’s 2009-2010 Provincial Championship The Deer Lodge Curling Club 425 Woodlawn St., Winnipeg, mb r3j 2j3 (ph) 888-4834 (fax) 888-1386 www.deerlodgecurlingclub.ca www.Curlmanitoba.org 25 susAn gAlbrAIth MeMorIAl sportsMAnshIp AwArd this award is named in memory of Susan galbraith who had a long time association with junior curling, first as a parent watching her three son’s advance through the junior ranks, and second, as a member of mlCa Council from 1997-1999. in may 2000 Susan was elected a member of the management Committee of the newly amalgamated manitoba Curling association but passed away suddenly in august 2000. the winners are selected each year by a vote of all competitors at the target Junior men’s and women’s Provincial Championship.the award is presented to two participating junior athletes for their demonstration of their commitment to the Fair-Play Code of ethics during the provincial championships. reCIpIents: JunIor Men 2001 2002 2003 2004 tyler Specula reid Carruthers Jason Peters Corey manchuk Steven Cook Jason gunnlaugson Elmwood St. Vital burntwood Pembina Springfield Valour road reCIpIents: JunIor woMen 2005 David Kraichy andrew Hunt 2006 Kyle Peters 2007 braden Zawada 2008 Kyle Peters 2009 Eric wasylenko winkler warren morden Springfield winnipeg winnipeg 2001 leigh adams 2002 allison Harrigan 2003 Jackie Komyshyn 2004 Kaileigh Strath 2005 Karen Hodgson 2006 allison nimik 2007 Kaileigh Strath 2008 lori miscavish 2009 Sarah lund Selkirk Shoal lake Fort garry Souris Victoria Victoria Souris thompson winnipeg the ednA MoffAt spIrIt of youth CurlIng sCholArshIp Edna moffat was a Past President and Honourary life member of the reCIpIents: manitoba ladies Curling association. Some members who are no longer curling enjoy coming out to renew friendships, join the curlers for lunch and cheer on the bonspiel participants. the bonspiel epitomizes fun and fellowship. two trophies are awarded: the whalley trophy donated by the whalley family in memory of mona whalley and the Esther Poulton Shield administered by the winnipeg Foundation in memory of Esther Susan Poulton. an annual luncheon is held on the first monday in may at assiniboia Downs. this is a very popular event and provides another great opportunity to renew old friendships and to meet and make new friends. if you are interested in joining or have any questions regarding our association, please contact the Curl manitoba office for further information. 1932-33 1933-34 1934-35 1935-36 1936-37 1937-38 1938-39 1939-40 1940-41 1941-42 1942-43 1943-44 1944-45 1945-46 1946-47 1947-48 1948-49 1949-50 1950-51 1951-52 1952-53 1953-54 1954-55 1955-56 1956-57 1957-58 1958-59 1959-60 1960-61 1961-62 1962-63 1963-64 1964-65 1965-66 1966-67 1967-68 1968-69 1969-70 1970-71 1971-72 1972-73 1973-74 1974-75 1975-76 1976-77 1977-78 1978-79 1979-80 1980-81 1981-82 1982-83 1983-84 1984-85 1985-86 1986-87 1987-88 1988-89 1989-90 1990-91 1991-92 1992-93 1993-94 1994-95 1995-96 1996-97 1997-98 1998-99 1999-00 2000-01 2001-02 2002-03 2003-04 2004-05 2005-06 2006-07 2007-08 2008-09 *deceased *mary berry, Heather mrs.
